Aperture 3.6 recognises Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens as Sigma 24-105 f/4

I have been using the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 VC Di lens for over a year, along with Aperture 3, which correctly identified the lens in its metadata tag. However, in the past few weeks, I notice that this lens is represented as Sigma A 24- 105 f/4 lens. All other data is correct, e.g. focal length of image, aperture, ISO etc.
Not sure why this is happening, any clues on how to rectify this?

The EXIF tags set by the cameras are not unique. The manufacturers are using their own codes, and that may be ambiguous. In case of a conflict, Aperture will use one of the possibilities.  There have been several reports about incorrectly identified lenses.

Did you update any software recently, for example update the RAW support?
Send a bug report to Apple, and report the wrong tag.  You can use the feedback form:  Apple - Aperture - Feedback
The only other alternative would be to use exiftool to change the EXIF tags of the originals.  (Modifying EXIF tags of Originals Using exiftool: camera, lens, gps)  But before going to that trouble, I'd wait, if Apple will fix the bug with the next RAW support update.

  • Aperture does not recognise TIF files from Nikon CoolScan

The TIF files from my Coolscan are good in every other application, but Aperture does not recognise them. I've tried re-saving the TIFs as JPG and PDS but Aperture doesn't recognise any file generated from the TIF. Maybe it's something to do with the scanner driver? Any ideas how to load these files into Aperture?

You might check the color space that is assigned to the files. If you are using Nikon Scan software to manage your CoolScan, there is a preference for setting the color space of the saved file. FWIW, Nikon CoolScan .nef files are a 'raw' file, not camera raw, that was/is a Nikon proprietary format for their scans. If you use the Nikon Scan for image editing, the edits are non-destructive in saved files and can be adjusted by re-opening the file in NS. Adobe first made editing camera raw available in early 2003 and the Nikon format preceded that. Nikon's camera raw format also has the .nef extension, but is not the same as the CoolScan .nef-- really confusing. I suggested checking the color space, because Nikon has different internal names for Adobe RGB(1988) as well as their own Wide Gamut space.
All said, I've not had a problem opening .tif scan files in Aperture.

  • Aperture doesn't recognise network backup disk

I use Aperture (2.1.4) for processing pictures and back up the vault periodically (learned the hard way) to an external drive connected to my Time Machine. Set up fine under Leopard, the drive was recognised and I could update the vaults using Aperture from time to time. It was necessary to open the external disk via Network before Aperture 'saw' the vault, but that was no problem.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard and Aperture says no vault is connected (even when I have opened the disk using network even though the icon for the disk appears on my desktop).
Do I need to reformat the drive under SL (via a USB connection), reconnect the disk to Time Machine and then re-establish the vault?
Help - as it stands I cannot back up any photographs.

What is the file system on the remote drive?
I am using an Infrant ReadyNAS to hold a vault, but I created a Mac OS X "sparse image" with an HFS+ disk image on it. It continues to work fine on Snow Leopard (I mount the network share, and then double click the .dmg file which then mounts it on my host, and I vault to it). If you have some sort of network drive on something like a LaCie or Infrant or anything that's not formatted as HFS+, I would anticipate problems at some point, as the file system just won't properly handle the names that Aperture uses within its vault.

  • Aperture does not recognise my .mcac membership when exporting to .mac

I have been trying to update a web gallery and have had problems with images being extended or squashed when they are displayed on the web. After trying several times to export and get the site to exhibit properly I now get a prompt when a click on "publish to .mac" Saying that I don't have a" .mac account configured on this computer". Oddly enough I have the idisk synced on the desktop and am logged into my .mac account.
Has anybody seen this before and what can I do to fix it?
    thanks

What happens if you log into the .Mac web site? Do you access it OK?
If so, check your Keychain for a corrupt/old password or userid.
If you're using .Mac backup, or .Sync, then keychain should be OK.
In this case, quit Aperture and then trash your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
Restart Aperture and try again. (Note: you'll have to change your Aperture/Preferences back to your needs.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Aperture 3 not recognising RAW files from EOS 300D

When I try to import RAW images from my EOS 300D, I get the message "unsupported image format".
I've checked, and Aperture should take RAW from the EOS300D.
Could this be firmware levels (I have 1.0.2) or something else?

Found the solution, or maybe the "workround".
When I accessed the CF Card from the computer via a card reader, I was able to transfer the RAW images to the Aperture library using Finder and dragging the RAW images across.
The issue seems to be that I can't upload the RAW images via USB directly to the camera port, although the JPEGs are happy enough to be transferred that way.

  • Latest version of Aperture is not recognising .dng files from Leica Monochrom. Is anyone else getting this problem?

Is anyone else finding this to be the case?

Well, the files are probably not the same as those from the M9.  In fact I'm pretty certain this isn't the case.
The monochrom is not listed on the RAW support page:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
I'm unsure whether running them through Adobe DNG converter would work, either (yes, I know it's DNG to DNG, but it may change the format).  Have you tried it?

  • Aperture suddenly not recognised by system screensaver

All of a sudden, I can access Aperture through my regular screen saver...... any clues as to how to reinstate it?

    Welcome to the forums guys!
The sharing of previews with iLife/Screen saver seems to be an issue at the moment. Some of my libraries it works, others it does not. A couple of suggestions that have been floated are to regenerate all of your previews, create a new library and import your old one into it. There are also suggestions about deleting a specific file which works for some and not for others.

  • Aperture regards masters as previews

    Hi,
I recently moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I opened my existing iPhoto library, which holds 25k pictures, in Aperture (so I did not use the File -> Import option, I simply opened the existing iPhote library).
Out of the 25k photos, roughly 500 of them have a badge with showing a yellow warning sign (I filtered on "File Status" is "Missing").
After some investigation through the Finder, it turns out that for these 500 photos, Aperture is missing the master files. So there is no photo in the My iPhoto Library / Masters but there is a photo in My iPhoto Library / Previews. However, these photos are actually masters, not previews, judging from the pixel size (3008 x 2000, which is the same as the other photos I took with my Nikon D70 at that time).
It looks to me that somehow Aperture regards these photos not as masters, but as previews. I can't find a pattern which of the 500 images are affected by this, it seems to have happened to some random pictures in my library.
Is there an easy way to let Aperture recognise these photos as masters again? I guess one option could be to copy each image to e.g. the desktop and import them again. How do I ensure Aperture links these newly imported photos to the photos regarded as previews?
Would the problem be resolved if I _import_ my iPhoto library into Aperture rather than just open it? What are the differences/benefits of importing an iPhoto library compared to opening an library in iPhoto?
    Thanks,
    Ivo

    Hi Frank,
    Aperture 3.4.5
    iPhoto 9.4.3
Yes, I could try to import the complete library as a new Aperture library but I guess this would create a library file at least equal in size of the existing library, i.e. 75 Gb. Are there any benefits of doing so? Will all the projects, keywords and albums be maintained? Will it make browsing the library faster?
I have tried to re-import one of the problematic photos to see if Aperture would automatically recognise and regard it as a master - no success.
    Best regards,
    Ivo

  • Problems with 'Order Prints' from Aperture 2.1.3 Mystery borders

    *Some background:*
I've been using Aperture for about 3 months now, importing most of my iPhoto library into the program. I have only recently started shooting in RAW format, most of my photos image files are in JPG format. In the past, I've had no problems with obtaining prints from within iPhoto or to a limited extent Aperture. So, far as I know my program is up-to-date. I have 2 plugins installed: Aperture2twitter and *flickr export Lite* both of which work acceptably.
*The problem:* I ordered 317 4×6 prints from my aperture library.
Every photo has a 1/4″ border on both sides of the image, i.e. the printed image is only 4×5 1/2″. I have never ordered this quantity before, but I don’t believe that was the problem, it appears that the processing machine was misaligned and no one reviewed the prints prior to shipping.
I tried again, on 4 different images ... all JPG files with 3 out of 4 were OK, but one exhibited the "border" issue.
I haven't a clue what is going on here. Apple implied +(via email)+ that I would have to individually crop every photo to ensure proper aspect ratio. This makes no sense to me at all, as I have never had this kinda problem before.
Could the plugin(s) be interfering with the s/w? Is there a trick to having photos printed from within Aperture that was not present in iPhoto?
Any thoughts on what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -john

I believe that I've solved this problem, with the help of the folks at Apple who handle Aperture tech support using the Aperture support ID that came with the product.
So the short answer is: Aperture print services REALLY DO REQUIRE the image to be cropped (constrained as they say) prior to the data being sent to Apple Print services.
Here is the link that describes cropping http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1993?viewlocale=en_US
The process as described is cumbersome, but the support tech pointed out that in Aperture, crops are 'non-destrutive' and can be undone simply by removing the check mark on the Adjustments tab of the image you crop. *This means that you do not have to make a duplicate image for cropping.*
So, here is the process that I arrived at to ensure that my "order prints" job turned out:
    1. create an album of all the photos you want to submit for printing.
    2. for each image call up the Crop HUD by pressing 'c' on the keyboard.
3.select the aspect ratio that you want for your photo. Make sure that it does NOT SAY Master Aspect Ratio, or Main Display Aspect Ratio.
    4. Crop the photo
on the adjustments tab you can see the X and Y data and Height / Width information which can be undone.
    5. Submit your print request to Apple for all the cropped photos.
When the prints arrive, you can compare the prints with the submitted photos. They should all be good. You can then delete the album (since it really is not a physical thing) or keep it for reference.
It all seemed a bit arcane to me, as I never had to worry about this in iPhoto. It must be that iPhoto sends different data than Aperture. I have just received 200 + prints back from Apple Print Services with about 98% success rate. I just have to adjust my thinking and my process when dealing with Aperture.

  • Looking for lightroom lens profile for tamron lens

I am using lightroom 5 at work and shot some images with a canon 5d2 body with tamron 24-70 2.8 vc and tamron 70-200 2.8 vc lense. According to the note below, both lens are supported since lightroom 4.1.  However I can not find the profile of these two lens on lightroom 5.  Does anyone how I can bring the profile back in?  Thanks.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/lens-profile-support-lightroom-4.html

The ProgramData folders are for Photoshop and are probably as old as the newest version of PS or DNG Converter you have.
The lens profiles for Lightroom 4 and 5 are under LR's Resources subfolder:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom x.x\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0\
(x.x = whatever version of LR you have)
For my LR 4.4  I have the following 16 subfolders under LensProfiles\1.0:
    Apple
    Canon
    Fujifilm
    Hasselblad
    Leica
    Mamiya
    Nikon
    Pentax
    Phase One
    Samsung
    Schneider
    Sigma
    Sony
    Tamron
    Tokina
    Zeiss
LR 5.3 adds DJI and GoPro as manufacturers for a total of 18 subfolders.

  • Aperture 3, Photoshop CS5 and OnOne Plugin Suite 5.1 for Mac

    Hi yall,
I mostly use Aperture 3.1.3 to manage my photos.
I got a new iMac and installed this software and recovered my Aperture Library. All is fine.
But I also installed my Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection for Mac, and y OnOne Plugin Suite 5.1 for Mac and ... it doesn't work.
Aperture doesn't find either Photoshop nor OnOne as external modules.
Can anyone tell me how to force Aperture to find those modules?
    Thank you

I've never used any of the Nik plugins, but I think it's bogus that it's a separate purchase for PS and A3. My Noise Ninja, for example, works with A3, PS or as a stand alone.
Agree 100%.  I have a long simmering discussion going on with Nik support about this (and the fact that the current workflow is destructive and, though it is reproducible, is not consistent from a UI POV).  I'm sorry that I didn't just start w. PS and Nik's PS Suite (which I still don't own).

For anyone who owns PS I would absolutely buy plugins for PS over A3.  You're breaking of the non-destructive workflow either way so you might as well have all the power and flexibility of photoshop along with your plugin.  I see no advantage to running plugins from Aperture.
Also agree 100% (and you point here is important and affects users).  I think (don't know PS well) the workflow once in PS is either non-destructive or close to it.  Certainly much more so -- and much easier to administer (=know what you did) -- than via Aperture-to-plug-in.
    DLScreative wrote:
I would go a step further and say buy Photoshop before spending 100s of dollars on plugins.
That's gonna depend an awful lot on whether you can get your money's worth from PS.  The Nik tools are very sweet, and (imho, obviously) superbly tuned to manipulating digital photographs.
I would like to have Nik's "drawing board" (I just made that up, but basically their UI for interacting with the planar data, including their U-Points), PhotoShop's tool chest, and Aperture's organizing abilities.  For $200 US.

  • Lightroom vs. other options (Aperture? what else?)

I'd hate to make just a really vague topic, but I'm curious what others are using for their stills workflow.  I use Lightroom, and so do most others I know, but I want to make sure I'm not in an echo chamber and not even aware of what I'm missing.
My workflow is entirely Lightroom-based: from import, sorting, basic editing, more advanced editing with Photoshop if necessary (but LR integrates this very seemlessly), and then jpg export (I currently don't do prints or web galleries, just delivery to clients via Dropbox).
Thoughts? What are the advantages of other options out there?

Aperture is only available for the Mac -- since it's Apple software.
Some time back... in Apple's way of doing things, they recognized that Photoshop -- though quite powerful -- wasn't very practical for everyday use nor did it have any management capabilities.  They recognized that a typical photographer probably shoots a large number of images which are all related -- they belong to the same event or project, etc.  They also recognized that if you shoot enough, you fill up your hard drive and need a way to deal with offline storage so that you can archive the shots you aren't working with NOW and yet not lose track of the fact that you have them.  They also recognized that 98% of the time, you're "adjusting" images and not doing wholesale edits (you're not creating composite images, etc.)  Lastly... they realized that the Photoshop editing process is not protective of the original image and is also QUITE bulky (files really have a filespace "bloat" problem becasue of the nature of the "layer" system.)
So they created Aperture -- which deal with all of this.
Adobe... feeling threatened by this new product (and rightly so) responded by creating Lightroom -- more or less a shameless rip-off of Aperture.
The two are roughly equal in terms of what they can do.
I have long felt that Adobe is exceptionally proud of they software and thing it should be priced as if they were selling gold bars.  When Aperture debuted... it was $200.  When Lightroom debuted it was $300.
Lightroom is available on both Windows and Mac.  Aperture is only available on Mac.
Recently I've noticed Apple seems to be drastically lowering the cost of software -- if not giving it away for free.  And further... they seem to consider everything to be a "family pack" in that once you buy something from the App Store you are allowed to install it on every computer YOU legitimately own.  Adobe is still in the "one computer" world.
Aperture is now $79.  Lightroom is $149.
I tried Lightroom in it's pre 1.0 beta days but even after release and watching several revisions, it was too much like Aperture (I suppose that's a good thing) so I saw little value in swtiching.  It doesn't work with Photoshop any better than Aperture does.
I use a lot of tools on my Mac and I find that Aperture (not-surprisingly) has better integration with everything else on the Mac.
As such... I pretty much treat this like a Coke / Pepsi thing and don't feel that one of them is truly "better" than the other and it's more a matter of personal taste.

  • Referenced Master Drive is not recognised

Most of my master images are stored as referenced files on an external hard drive. However , when I connect it to my laptop , Aperture does not recognise it as my referenced library. I use the "locate masters " pane and when I put matched images in the top and bottom of the panes the reconnect and the reconnect all buttons are greyed out. The drive also is showing as "offline " in the top pane.
I am beginning to panic a little as I have 30000 referenced images...Please help.

WHAT MAKE is the drive case?
WD drives are fine, WD MyBook and Passport, not so much.
Some WD cases are built around the drive, it can't be removed or upgraded.
Otherwise it would work fine in OWC Mercury and all their drive cases are fine.
