Aperture 3 and Faces, is ignore an option?

I have numerous Projects in Aperture 3, I also use faces. But, I would like to have Faces ignore or not search a few projects , is there away to do that?  Not all projects just one maybe 2.

The Library file page in the User Manual is a good place to start:
Working with Library Files
Aperture lets you select Images and/or Projects, and export them as a Library.  You can then either use this Library, or import it into another Library.  When you import, you are given the option to either merge (useful if you have exported from the Library into which you are importing) or copy.
In general, it is advised that you put as many files in one Library as possible.  The standard exceptions are multiple photographers not working for the same company, images that need to be sequestered for legal reasons, and special collects that are not based on a single photographer (mainly scanned archives, but ****, too).  The reason for keeping your Library big is that the Library is an index of everything in it.  The more that's in it, the easier it is to find.
If the number of Images that you don't want to ever have show up when you use Faces is not large, just delete the Faces Position Box from them.  This can be done by clicking the "x" if the box is showing, or right-clicking a proposed Face and selecting "Not a face".

    Hello,
is there any way to sync Aperture 3 Faces with an iPhone and an AppleTV via iTunes, just the way it is possible with iPhoto?
If not, is there any ETA on this functionnality?
    Thanks.

I eventually resolved this myself by resetting sync history ... at least I guess that did it.

  • Aperture 3 and scanning faces

I installed Aperture 3 and the GPS scanning worked fine but I am having trouble with Faces. It shows a progress bar and only about 5% after 5 hours. I let the computer run overnight but this morning my MBpro wouldn't wake up. What should I do? Could it take more than 5 or 6 mins to wake up? It didn't sound busy (no HD noise). I have about 20k images (130gb worth)

  • DPI and PPI in Aperture 'Export' and 'Print' windows

    Hi,
As mentioned in an earlier post, I just bought an Epson 3880 printer and some Epson Hot Press paper, so now I have to pay attention to PPI (term used for displays) and DPI (term  used for printers).
In Aperture however, files being exported require DPI specs(!), while files being printed require that we specify PPI specs. How is that?
Also, my Epson manual indicates that I can print at 5 distinct "DPI" settings, from 180 to 2880. My Aperture Print window, however, only offers 3 options with 360 "PPI" as the highest (considered Draft quality by Epson - if "DPI"), plus a 4th referred to as Custom.
Also, I have a note jotted down a while back that says: "1440 dpi for most papers with 240 dpi files, at 2880 if 360" - whatever that meant 6 months ago at an Epson 3880 seminar, before I got the printer.
Can you guys sort this out for me? Please?
    Thanks a lot,
    Raphael

I'm not at my studio.  My current driver is 8.x.  The newest driver is 9.33.  My remarks here may not fit with your more current version of the driver (but that would surprise me — the printer came out about 4 years ago, iirc).
The profiles are not, afaik, included with the driver, at least when you download it from Epson's site.
There are two profiles for each Epson Fine Art paper — one at 1440 and one at 2880.  You should try each with every kind of print you make, and determine which is better.  IME, _for my needs_, 2880 was never worse.  I use the 2880 profiles.
The profile is selected from the "Color Profile" drop-down at the top of the "Rendering" section of Aperture's "Print" dialog.
(Set "Render Intent" to "Perceptual" for, in general, photographs or anything with smoothly graduated changes in color.  Set "Render Intent" to "Relative Colorimetric" for, in general, graphics or anything with smooth areas of constant color and sharp transitions between areas of color.  Generally, if "Render Intent" is "Perceptual", check "Black Point Compensation"; otherwise uncheck it.)
Leave "Print Resolution" at "Auto".  I know of no reason to ever change this.  (I don't, in fact, know what this control does, and have never changed it.)
When you click "Print" in Aperture's "Print" dialog, a short dialog opens asking you if you want to save any changes you made to your Preset.  I always save my changes.  Prints often need to be immediately remade — all transitions of data from electronic to physical media are problematic — and I like to return to my Preset ready to print the same Image(s) again.
When that dialog closes, the OS print dialog opens.  Your 3880 printer should already be selected in the "Printer" drop-down.  You need to create and should save an OS Preset for your paper.  Note that on the "Color Matching" page (this dialog has pages, not tabs; direct complaints to Cupertino), all (two) options should be grayed-out.  This indicates that Aperture is handling color matching, which is what you want (for best prints and anything approaching a color-calibrated workflow).  On the "Paper Handling" page, the "Destination Paper Size" drop-down is grayed-out, but should show you the selection you made in the Aperture Print dialog.  The "Printer Settings" page has two tabs.  On the "Basic" tab, in the "Media Type" drop-down, select your paper ("Fine Art Paper ▹ Hot Press [Bright or Natural])*.  The "Ink" drop-down should be grayed-out, but show "Matte".  Matte is proper selection for Hot Press [Bright or Natural].  This dialog knows this from your color profile selection in the Aperture Print dialog.  Chose "16-bit" output and any other options your want (you can experiment; I find no difference).  I ignore the warning about print quality at the bottom area — this has never been an issue.  On the "Advanced" tab of the "Printer Settings" page, it should tell you that "Epson Driver Color Management is Off".  That's what you want.  You want Aperture to manage the color.
Save your OS print dialog Preset.  Use it every time you print to the same paper.
*If you cannot select your paper, you have not selected the correct paper size in the "Printer" section of Aperture's Print dialog.  Note that the "Paper Size" selection includes not only the paper size, but also whether the feed is by sheet-feeder or manual, and whether or not the print is borderless.  (I didn't design this; I assume there are reasons to have shoe-horned these options into the "Paper Size" selection.
This is all tricky on top of being actually complex and next to being new.  It takes everyone time and mistakes (read: ink and paper) to canalize a flow that works for producing the prints they want.  I hope this gets you there a little faster.  Report back with what doesn't work.
    —Kirby.

  • Albums, places, events and faces on Photos

Can anyone tell me how I can get the menu option tabs of events and faces on Photos like the video shows?  On mine I only have places and albums.  Also, how do you create new albums?

You create albums by including additional folders from your computer in your sync (and if you want to keep the existing albums then they also need to be in the next photo-sync, as they will be deleted if they are excluded from it). You cannot create new albums, or move photos between albums, directly on the iPad.
For faces, from the manual 'Events and Faces must first be configured in iPhoto or Aperture on a Mac, then synced to iPad' i.e. the photos must have been synced with 'Faces' set - if you didn't sync any 'faces' then the tab is hidden (as there is nothing for it show).

  • Aperture crashes and crashes and crashes

I just have upgraded from 2 to 3 and now aperture crashes every time I open it after a couple of minutes. I have turned of faces. I have looked for a 32 bit checkbox. I dont´s have one but  understand it doesnt matter since I am running leopard (10.5.8).
Can the problem be that my library is large (about 25 000 items, 150 giga) and computer maybe too slow (core duo 2, 2 MHz, 2 giga ram, 200 giga free space)? I have tried to export parts of the library, since I thought it might be easier to run several smaler libraries, but everytime I try it crashes.
It seems to be stuck with processing some items, and it stands still at (processing 14 of 389).

After upgrading yesterday I could not open Aperture at all, it crashed immediately. Then I held down the option key, and opened an other (and empty) library that I had. After this I switched back to my original aperture library, and after trying a few times it finally started upgrading. I think it crashed before it was completely finished, but I was able to open the library, even though it only stayed open a couple of minutes before it carshed. It just crashed, I didn´t force quit, and it never seemd to get past processing 14 of 389. But today, after restarting the program tens of times it finally got past 14, and then it processed the rest quite fast (in a couple of hours).
So I guess this mean that there must have been some problem in the original library as you say, maybe some files are too big or have too many ajustments. But for the moment it seems to work, just hope it will last.
    Thanks a lot!

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.

  • Facebook and Faces Weirdness

Does anyone have insights into how Facebook and user tagging in synced Facebook albums works? I understand this much: Faces turn into tags, and if the e-mail associated with a Face matches a Facebook user's e-mail address, the tag is linked to that user. I also get that the Faces and tags can't be fully synced since when a tagged user removes his tag on Facebook, you don't want that deleting the corresponding Face in Aperture.
But what happens if the album owner deletes (or adds) a tag in Facebook, should that get synced back to Aperture?
In theory, I should just be able to test that and see, but before I even get there, weirdness happens. After uploading an image and syncing a few times, but having made no changes to either the Facebook or Aperture version, some Faces in Aperture change to their Facebook version (I loose the connection to the Face I tagged, and instead get a little facebook icon) while others go blank (the face is still marked, but as "unnammed"). There seems to be no pattern, that I can discern to what faces Facebookized, what ones go blank, and which ones are unbothered; though it often seems to be the same few people.
The bottom line: +I'm loosing Faces I've entered in images in my Aperture library because I'm syncing them with images on Facebook+. That can't be the plan. Does anyone else see this happening? Is it a known bug? Is it part of some feature I'm not using right?

    Roy,
Here are some things I've been able to do successfully.
    1. I uploaded a photo to an album, tagged the photo on Facebook, sync'd the album in Aperture and the name appeared on the photo in Aperture.
    2. I took another photo of the same person, added the name in Aperture to match what was on Facebook, but not as a FB name just a normal name, and then sync'd the album 5 times. I did not see any weirdness like you described.
    3. Took the same photo from step 2, removed the tag on Facebook, sync'd the album in Aperture and the name tag stayed in Aperture.
Does that help explain some things for you?

  • How do I remove Aperture trial and go back to iPhoto (be kind, I'm new).

How do I remove the Aperture trial and go back to iPhoto.  For my usage (just iPhone pics/movies) iPhoto is okay for me, but now I cannot figure out how to remove Aperture, when I drag to Trash I get a warning that Aperture is a system file.
Please help, but also, please go slow if you can help, I am new to my Mac.

Should be pretty easy as follows:
1 - Make sure you have copies of any pictures you want that are inside Aperture somewhere on your computer.
2 - Quit Aperture > Remove any Aperture icon from dock > drag the Aperture program (lens icon) from Applications folder to the Trash > proceed through any warning dialog (including entering password as required) to complete the process.
Note - new security features in OS X Lion may present those warning dialogs to prevent accidental deletion of Apple programs.
3 - Hold down the 'Option' key and use the 'Go' menu in menu bar and select the 'Library' option.
4 - In the Library folder, open the 'Application Support' folder and delete any Aperture folder found.
5 - While still in the Library folder, open the 'Preferences' folder and delete both the 'com.apple.Aperture.plist' and 'com.apple.Aperture.plist.lockfile' file.
6 - While still in the Library folder, open the 'Caches' folder and delete the 'com.apple.Aperture' folder.
7 - Go the your 'Pictures' folder and drag the 'Aperture Library' (may be named Aperture Trial Library or similar) to the Trash to delete it as well.
8 - Empty the Finder Trash to remove Aperture.
Note - there are some files and Aperture folders in the '/Library' folder (which is in the root of your system drive), but you don't really need to remove those. Since you are a beginner, it is probably better not to for now.
    That should do it.
Additional edit: There are two Library folders I am referring to. The first is the one in your user account 'Home' folder which is the one you are going to by using the 'Go' menu. This is the one you are deleting files from in the steps listed. The second Library folder is the one in the root of your system drive and is not typically a location for beginners to work with (thus the final note above). Hope that is clear enough.
Message was edited by: CorkyO2 to add clarity concerning the 'Library' folder.

  • HT4818 I have installed bootcamp that worked properly.  Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another OS X 10.8.2 and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. How can I boot Windows again and keep both

I have installed bootcamp by the bootcamp assistant and worked properly.
Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another Mountain Lion System and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. However, Bootcamp still remained in the Startup Disk in the System Preferences. When I tried to boot Bootcamp using the Startup Disk it did not boot and received a message that there is no bootable device. I have not lost any data and can read Bootcamp partition from both OS X systems. Please advise how can I boot Windows / Bootcamp again? Thank you.

Recommendation 1: Use a VM for this. It's essentially a giant C.F. to do this with native booting, and is potentially fragile.
But if you're going to ignore that and do this anyway, realizing that it can break anytime in particular with OS upgrades, and that it's very difficult to impossible to resize the three volumes once you've installed the systems:
    1. create three partitions, setting each to be the size for OS X copy 1, copy 2, and Windows respectively. The Windows partition needs to be set to MS-DOS format (actually FAT32) which later in the Windows installer you'll reformat as NTFS. Do not use Boot Camp Assistant to resize/partition the disk, it simply won't work for this use case.
    2. install OS X copy 1
    3. install OS X copy 3
    4. Use gdisk (available at sourceforge) which is a command line only application, to create a new hybrid MBR adding only the last partition (Windows) to the hybrid MBR and setting it to be bootable. As a concequence you will not be able to see/share either OS X volume from within Windows. The Windows NTFS volume will be visible from within OS X.
    5. Install Windows to the only partition its installer should see (confirm size), you'll need to format it NTFS first, and I suggest using the fast format option if available.

  • KEEPING APERTURE 2 and 3 side-by-side

    Hi everyone...
...I was one of those whose Macbook Pros seized up for days when trying to upgrade to 3 from 2. In the end I reverted to 2 and restored from my backed up AP2 Library. All fine.
QUESTION: Is a viable answer to buy AP3 complete, and run AP2 (having re-named it to avoid confusion) for the old library and AP3 for all new photos? Are there any dangers?
I have read everything Kevin Doyle has written but I really cannot go to the lengths he does!
    John B

    Hi again everyone...
...and thanks for all the advice. I bought AP3 complete (not the upgrade this time) and followed this sequence and
    - re-named Aperture 2 to Aperture 2, and likewise AP Library to Aperture 2 Library
    - closed Time Capsule and all programs, EHDs etc
    - installed AP3
    - switched off Faces and GPS
    - downloaded Vers. 3.0.1 and 3.0.2
    - re-started
    - ran Disk Utility
    - imported the old AP2 Library (overnight)
    - checked this morning (fine)
    - re-started
    - re-ran Disk Utility etc
    - moved folders in the import-created 'Aperture 2 Library" in AP3 to Projects and Albums
    - deleted the now empty 'Aperture 2 Library' folder in AP3
    - re-ordered the folders via 'Keep folders...by name' etc to alphabetical order
    - quit AP3 and re-started
    After that I
    - opened AP3 again
    - checked every folder
    - connected the EHD with the AP2 Referenced files on it
    - checked that all the Referenced files re-connected with the new Library (they did)
    - quit AP3 again (leading to a lengthy 'upgrading' process - all fine
    - re-opened AP3 and checked again
    - quit AP3
    - moved AP2 and the Aperture 2 Library (already twice backed up on EHDs) to Trash
    - opened AP3...
...and everything now seems to work in Rolls-Royce fashion.
I set great store by Kevin Doyle's posts, particularly the need to avoid filling up a drive. Thanks to him too!

  • Aperture 2 and Lightroom 2

    Hello everyone.
I know this question has been asked before, and I have read some previous threads about these two products. However, I was hoping to have a few things clarified for me that I was not to sure about.
I just recently started to really become involved with Digital Photograph. Purchased my first SLR (Nikon D80) and love it. I really found a hobby I enjoy.
With all the pictures I am taking and will be taking, I obviously need to find post processing software that suits my needs. Here is where Aperture 2 and Lightroom (and to a degree, CS3) come into play.
Let me ask some obvious questions first.
1.) Lightroom 2 is a organizing piece as well as editing software piece correct? lets you get into the photo, make adjustments. Pretty good editing from what I can tell.
Can it be said that LR2 and A2 do the same thing, just differently? A2 lets you organize your photos and edit them as well. They just do it differently correct? For example, A2 lets you edit in full mode.
I guess that is one of my main questions.
2.) Fundamentally, what are the main differences between L2 and A2?
Down the road, I am planning on using CS3 (or CS4) to take advantage of layers and do the really cool fun stuff. But that is down the road when I am more experienced.
I downloaded both LR2 and A2 and installed the trials and plan to use them over the next 30 days to 'test them out.'
A2 seems to 'plugin' better to the iMac, which I expected.
With LR2, from what I can see, I could use LR2 instead of iPhoto for my organizing/cataloging, and if I wanted to move photos from LR2 to iPhoto (to make books, calenders, etc. etc.), I would need to export it out of LR2 and import it into iphoto. That correct? Where as Aperture 'co-exists' easier with iPhoto?
Is there really anything that stands out and separates the two?
The other thing I need to consider is when I bring in CS3 down the road. What is the easier way to integrate everything.
    Appreciate the help.
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Hi,
I migrated to the iMac from PC around a month ago and was evaluating my photo options both before and after the migration. The difference with me is, I guess, that I haven't previously been much of a user or any version of Photoshop, so had no Adobe-centric preconceptions to colour my own evaluation of Lightroom and Aperture.
I guess I qualify as an enthusiastic amateur who finally migrated from film to digital 5 years ago, after 25 years of film. On the PC, my photo management comprised folders on the hard disk plus Picasa to provide some basic abstraction layer and album facility. Editing was very basic and relied on The Gimp if no addressed by Picaca's built-in adjustments. Then I started taking photos in RAW rather than jpeg, and it all went to custard as they say.
Picasa didn't cut it any more, RAW opened up a lot more options and my collection was becoming unmanageable. Tried ViewNX - limited manageability. Tried Lightroom 2 on the PC - wow, this is more like it. Didn't like ACDSee, iview. Migrated to Mac, and started comparing all over again.
Lightroom - given my previous try-out I was expecting Good Things, so left the start of this trial until after using Aperture for 2 weeks. Suddenly Lightroom felt clunky - very modal and constraining.
Aperture - didn't really know what to expect. Imported all of my photos as referenced and found my folder structure replicated by albums. Kind of disconcerting initially as I couldn't work out where the Masters were, nor the true behaviour of albums, projects and folders in Aperture. Then it clicked - great version control and cataloguing, non-destructive edits etc etc, logical collections of photos. It worked more like my thought processes, rather than my thought processes having to adjust to how the software worked.
For my uses, Lightroom's closer integration with Photoshop is a bit of a non-event as I don't chop up photos - just develop them. Anyhow, Photoshop Elements is there if I REALLY need it (so far not at all after a month).
I can see how previous experience with Photoshop or Lightroom would create a preference for continuing with Lightroom. For me, there's no business reason, emotional attachment or previous experience to consider, so Aperture won. Lightroom was uninstalled after 2 weeks.
    Regards,
    Calx
PS - I think from an interface design perspective, Aperture is an amazing piece of software, leaving aside other comparison aspects.

  • Migrating iPhoto to Aperture 3 and the case of missing photos

I love the new Aperture 3 and am so excited to migrate from iPhoto. I have used the Aperture feature of importing an entire iPhoto library directly into a new Aperture library. This doesn't produce any errors (except for a handful of missing photos which aren't too important), but when I look at the resultant Aperture library (8 hours later), I am missing a LOT of photos. My iPhoto library has about 24,000 photos and my Aperture library only has about 16,000. Because of the differences in the way Aperture and iPhoto keep track of edits, my Aperture library should have considerably more photos than iPhoto and not less. Please help!

In new iLife 09 (or iPhoto 09), some pics are now black in the Event, simply an outline of dotted lines. Yet, when I cursor fast, they appear, so I know there are still there.
That doesn't mean that they are "still there". It means that a cached version of the image exists.
I recall, when migrating photos it noted that the photos in iPhoto (old system) needed to be formatted to new iPhoto, so I allowed. Makes me wonder if something in a pic title or such is the issue.
That's a standard procedure when you upgraded to the later version of iPhoto. Happens every time to up a version, and to everyone.
With regard to Portrait. When I import from iPhoto to Aperture, any Portrait picture has a 2nd verson next to it, but in the Horizontal. All Horizontal pics, there is only the one version of the pic.
Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". iPhoto, seeing the flag, reads the intention and creates a modified version. Hence the second version of the Portrait pics and no second version of the Landscape ones. The landscape ones don't have an auto-rotate tag.
For the dotted line problem, try rebuild your iPhoto Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Aperture 3 and iPhoto 11 Deletion Disaster

I had been using iPhoto 11 exclusively. I decided to try using Aperture 3. I populated a new Aperture library by referencing my entire iPhoto library, leaving the files in their original location. I decided to stop using Aperture and deleted the iPhoto pictures from within Aperture. I then cleaned the Aperture trash, which in turn moves those files to the system trash. Before clearing the system trash, I opened iPhoto to make sure that my files were still there. When I opened iPhoto, I saw all my files there and decided to proceed with clearing the system trash, thinking everything was preserved. The next time I went to use iPhoto, I tried selecting one of the pictures in my iPhoto library and got a black screen with an exclamation point inside of a triangle.
Before this disaster, I had just under 6,000 photos in iPhoto. iPhoto still tells me that I have this many pictures, and the size of my iPhoto library is still 30GB. When I browse inside of the iPhoto library, it appears as though the files that I imported into Aperture are missing their full sized versions, which is causing the black screen with the triangle and the exclamation point. Short of trying to recover the files through some sort of undelete procedure or data recovery attempt, can the pictures be restored from anywhere else?
I unforunately did not keep a backup, and Time Machine (which I do not use) would only let me go back a few hours to right after my last system trash purge, which doesn't do me any good. How come iPhoto is still saying that I have all my photos? How come the iPhoto library is still 30GB? I am guessing that this disaster has cost me about 80-85% of my photos. It just doesn't seem right that I should be able to delete my iPhoto masters from within Aperture. And if I am able to do that, which apparently I am and did, iPhoto should do a better job of reflecting the change.
Thoughts and suggestions for recovering these files? Thanks in advance!

By the way, I have several data recovery software packages. It looks like they are able to recover the pictures (or most of them), but all the filenames are lost.
Then, on no account, do anything that might write to your disk, until you recovered your images.
How come iPhoto is still saying that I have all my photos? How come the iPhoto library is still 30GB? I am guessing that this disaster has cost me about 80-85% of my photos. I can only guess what happened, because you did not tell us how you imported your pictures into Aperture. Probably you used the option to import the images to Aperture as referenced master files, leaving the actual files inside the iPhoto library to avoid duplicates. And when you wanted to uninstall Aperure and delete its database, you told Aperture to delete the master image files and not only the references to the masters. So Aperture deleted the master image files inside the iPhoto Library.
and you were cutting of the branch you were sitting on.
The iPhoto Library must not be modified in any way, other then by iPhoto itself. iPhoto can't be blamed for reporting wrong information, if its database has been corrupted behind its back.
I wish, however, that Aperture would give a fair warning, if you ask it to delete master files locating inside an iPhoto Library package.
