Aperture 3 and fcpx

I have imported some videos into aperture 3. Those videos resides in a firewire drive. I also have most of my videos that have imported from my videocamera on another firewire drive. I am working on a mbp. Now to the problem: I cant have both firewire drives attached at the same time so I cant have access to the clips from both drives at the same time. I tried to attach the drive that I have my aperture videos in, and then drag them inside fcpx (to the internal drive). My plan was to move them from the internal to the external later. The problem is that all the clips turn black!
My next plan is to find the original files of my videoclips inside aperture. I tried to rightclick but I didnt find "reveal in finder".
Any ideas how I should move my videos from the aperture drive onto my FCPX drive?

Export them from Aperture - use the Export Original setting.

  • What's the best way to share my Aperture and FCPX projects between an iMac and MacBook Pro?

    Greetings,
I own both an iMac and MacBook Pro and I'm interested in figuring out the best way to have access to my iTunes, Aperture and Final Cut Pro X files not only when I'm at home using the iMac, but when I'm out and about with the MBP.
I'm sure there are others among us who require a similar setup so I was hoping you guys could share with me how you solved this little problem, and also inform me of any potential negatives for your method so that I'm well prepared. Thanks.

Best is a subjective term, as it will ultimately come down to preference. The fastest however, would be to wait until they market has a few thunderbolt drives available for purchase...
But like the first poster stated, a firewire 800 drive, would be the more convenient choice for now. Or you could set the shared folder on your iMac to be avaible on your network and use it to allow your MBP to access it wirelessly.
Obviously whatever you change, just save it back to the same folder on the iMac. Keep in mind it will not be as fast as the first suggestion (unless it is a wired network), but may be usefull for smaller files.
However, you should have everthing backed up via an external drive, that is always useful...

  • Better to use Aperture or FCPX for import?

I am starting from scratch with FCPX. I have a MBA with a portable thunderbolt drive, and right now this is my primary. I have an older 2008 iMac, and this is my workstation I use for everything when I am at home. I'm on the road more than at home and do most of my FCPX work on the road.
I use Aperture (and iPhoto) primarily for media management. Now that it imports movies from my camcorder and DSLR, it's really the primary app we use. A huge side benefit is the disk savings offered over importing everything in iMovie.
Are there any drawbacks to just using Aperture for importing? I can still use these videos, and convert them to prores, etc. with FCPX as needed for video projects, correct?
85% of the iMovie (or now FCPX) stuff is just to share it online, send to family, etc. But the 15% of the projects are important ones, which is why I'm investing in FCPX. I don't always know when I import the footage if it is going to be included in an important project or not. Housekeeping-wise, it seems like the best way is to use Aperture and avoid the large files until I need them in FCPX.
Seems obvious, but I know little so far about FCPX.
    Thanks for any insight,
    Jack

I come from the video end and I feel that it's best to import video into a video application and stills into a stills application. If you import the video into Apeerture you still have to get it into FCP. You then drag the video into FCP to edit it. You're doubling up the file, because FCP will want it in the event folder not the Aperture library. When you drag a still into FCP it will remain linked to the Aperture library. Currently FCP imports the JPEG thumbnail from Aperture not the RAW file BTW. If you want the RAW image you have to export it from Aperture and bring it into FCP.

  • Photos from aperture into FCPX

I'm trying to use the media window built into FCPX to take photos from my aperture library into FCPX.
    Not working.
All I can muster up through the media window in FCPX is 29 rather random images, most from my iPhone. I've got thousands of pictures that aren't being recognized.
For example: Ruidoso April 2014 is a project I have 429 pictures in. Only one will show in the FCPX browser. I can see projects, photos, faces, ...facebook...projects, etc. I can see the basic structure of aperture and options that make sense, but only 29 total photos are showing.
Odd thing, while composing this message, FCPX crashed for some odd reason. When I reopened it, the project I'm working on "Ruidoso April 2014" now has 13 still images in the libraries frame on the top left from my icloud photostream.
so I guess I have two questions:
#1 - how can I get photos from Aperture into FCPX using the media browser (or is this not a good option?)?
#2 - any idea why images from photostream popped randomly into the event I'm working on?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    -Robert

  • How do you import iPhone video from Aperture into FCPX?

I need to import some iPhone 4 video files from Aperture into FCPX. For some reason there seems to be no way to do this. Please do not suggest I import the videos directly from my iPhone. #1 the videos are already off my phone and #2 I have no desire to import all my iPhone videos separately into FCPX when I am already importing them into Aperture along with my photos.

You have to drag them from their location, (finder or iPhoto etc) into one of the events in the event list of FCP X.

  • Import .mov from aperture to FCPX

    Hi,
I'm currently using Aperture & Final Cut Pro X (latest versions)
I am storing all movies (.mov h264) Full HD within Aperture. They are stored in various events and files are managed by aperture and stored within the aperture library.
My question is: What is the best way to work with these aperture movie files within Final Cut Pro and how do I best import them into FCPX.
In the past I have exported from Aperture into a folder on the HDD and then imported via FCP to work with the files. I've always used the original media import option within FCPX.
I've notice I can also drag from aperture direct into FCPX and also import via the media browser. How does that compare to what I have been doing.
What's the best option to get work with these files inot FCPX and what's the best import options.
Also, I'm still confussed (no matter how much I read) about original and proxy media. I think I should stick with original as proxy seems to decrease image quality when exporting (in mp4 or mov format HD).
If I do use the media browser or used a referenced file. Should I copy the file to FCP folder or keep where it is. If I keep where it is does it alter the original file when I make changes within FCPX.
Sorry for the questions, they are confussing reading it back. I've tried to search and read a lot about it but not really getting what I need out of it.
Basically - whats the best way to edit .mov file located in Aperture while in FCPX. Do I need to import, copy to FCPX folder and what settings do I use.

I'm in the same boat, just beginning to work with Final Cut Pro X with many movie files in Aperture.
With some movie files, it works fine to merely drag from the FCPX Photos browser into an event. But for some older movie files, FCPX says there's no movie file there. (All of these play fine in Aperture.) I think this is because the files are referenced movies and FCPX needs self-contained movies.
Here are two ways to deal with this, in my experience:
    This is the simplest:
    1. Select the file in Aperture and choose File > Export Original.
    2. Import into FCPX
(You can't use the Edit in External Editor command, and there's no option to export a movie directly to FCPX, but you might be able to automate this process with Keyboard Maestro or Automator.)
    Another method:
    1. Drag the movie from Aperture to the Desktop.
    2. Open the movie in QuickTime Player 7 Pro. (QuickTime Player X won't work.)
    3. Save As Self-contained movie.
    4. Import to FCPX.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D3380Z/A/quicktime-7-pro-for-mac-os-x
    File size example:
In Aperture, the file is listed as 11 MB.
After dragging to the desktop, the file is 4K. After exporting original from Aperture, the file is 11MB.
QuickTime Player X shows the dragged file as 4K and shows only a black screen, though it acts as if the movie is playing.
FCPX also shows the dragged file as 4K.
QuickTime Player 7 Pro very briefly puts up a dialog "Searching for movie data in file "DSCN1234.MOV" then opens the file fine. (I don't know if this will work with the basic QTP 7 without the Pro registration.)
After saving as self-contained movie, the file size is 11 MB.
It's odd that Aperture can handle these files and FCPX can't. I've posted an enhancement request to Apple.

Ok, so I;ve noticed that when I import using the media browser (photo icon) - Inititally these files are refrenced back to apeture libary, however once transcoded it puts it onto PRORES format and puts a file that's about 1000% bigger (120mb original for 1min file to 1gb) I'm left with a "optimised" media folder with the 1gb file and original media folder with the 120mb file.

  • I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

  • New to Apple and Aperture-I am surprised at the lack of integration between Aperture and applications as iMovie.

Aperture slideshow is terrible in terms of entering any text on a photo.  It appears that you have to export the photos from Aperture to the desktop to import the photos to iMovie to be able to add quite good text to individual photos. While I am new to the Apple system (I am quite knowledgable in Windows), I am surprised that iMovie cannot import an Album or a Project from Aperture.  It does not appears possible to to copy and paste from Aperture to the project created in iMovie without exporting to the desktop.  This seems like a step backwards.
Since I come from Windows I will be importing most of my photos into Lightroom3 and doing  most of my work.  Yet, there are features in Aperture that I like and will probably use both for the time being.  I am using Aperture 3 and iLife11.  New Macbook Pro

I read the manuals and watched the tutorials on the Apple web site as well as F1 in Aperture and never saw a reference to using Windows menu to list photos in iMovie.  I check this and it does seem to work.  however, you must admit that the procedure for adding text on a photo is limited as compare to iMovie.  Maybe, it is because I want to add text to a photo for posting on Mobileme or other photo posting sites so friends can view the photos in a slideshow or one by one.
I assume that you can answer this question. Since I was exporting photos to the desktop so I could import them in iMovie, if I delete the folder on the desktop will they disappear form the project in iMovie?  Since I do not like a lot of folders on the desktop can I move them to the Pictures folder and not loose the project links in iMovie?

  • If I install a trial version of Aperture and don't like it, will I be able to still use my photo library in iPhoto?

I'm evaluating both Aperture and Adobe's Lightroom to decide which one meets my needs for the best price (got a deal on Lightroom 3 for $120 and I know Aperture 3 is $79 in the Mac App Store).
    I have a few questions:
I currently use iPhoto '11 (9.1.3) and have Photoshop CS4, so I have tools for importing DSLR shots and making pro-type changes in Camera Raw, while also having iPhoto to organize my photo library and syncing Events and Albums with my iPhone and iPad.
I like that I would be able to maintain my iPhoto library data for Faces and Places in Aperture, but am concerned that when the iPhoto library is "upgraded" for Aperture, and I decide I don't really need that program, the upgraded library won't work with iPhoto anymore.
Will I still be able to use iPhoto to access and organize my library, or will it be forever converted for use with Aperture?
I'm considering Lightroom because I have been disappointed with the number of bugs showing up in recent iPhoto releases. I'm a bit weary of buying another photo management software product from Apple. iPhoto '11 crashed my old iMac very frequently (I wound up upgrading to a new iMac due to this and I was expecting to run out of hard drive space in a year or two anyway).
Recently, iPhoto bugs make Events show up multiple times in iTunes when syncing for iPhone and iPad.
If iPhoto management is this unstable, I would like to consider choosing a new method of organizing and syncing to iOS devices and abandoning the iPhoto library method.
Will I find a better user experience with Aperture, or does it also use the single file library and suffer the same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing lately?

The iPhoto library isn't changed in any way by Aperture. Aperture will import the Library and you can choose to copy the files to the Aperture Library or reference them within iPhoto. As long as you don't delete files from the iPhoto Library via Aperture (which you could do if you choose to Reference) there is no impact on iPhoto
Will I still be able to use iPhoto to access and organize my library, or will it be forever converted for use with Aperture?
    They are completely different libraries.

    Fixed in the 9.1.3 update.

Like iphoto, Aperture can use the "single file library" or it can use a Referenced Library (just like iphoto can). Note that using a Referenced Library offers not a whit more in terms of features or capabilities. It's file storage plain and simple. Nothing more.
No you won't see the "same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing..." because Aperture is an entirely different allication.
But you my see Aperture or Lightroom struggles

  • How to get Aperture and iPhoto to use Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively

Using some techniques that I found in various places in these forums, I am going to give step-by-step instructions to get Aperture and iPhoto to recognize Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively.
Note: This worked for me using 10.4.6 with the latest iPhoto 06 and Aperture updates. I do NOT know if this will work on older versions of OS X, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Note: If you also use a Pentax *ist DS camera, these instructions will probably disable support for that particular device due to the modifications made to a system file. Only complete these instructions if you want to use a *ist DL camera.
** These instructions involve modifying system level files using a HEX editor. If you are not comfortable with this, do NOT attempt to do this or you could kill your system. Remember, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. These steps worked great for me but follow at your own risk!! **
    Ok, lets begin...
    1) Download this great patch by macintosh_tech
    http://idisk.mac.com/macintosh_tech-Public
This patch contains an updated raw.plist file which includes the RAW information for the *ist DL. This patch also contains an updated libRaw.dylib file and an updated Raw Presets file for Aperture.
** Do NOT copy the libRaw.dylib file from this patch to the folder listed in the patch Read_Me. This file did not work on my Intel-based Mac and crashed my system!!
I was able to modify my original libRaw.dylib file using a HEX editor to get it to work on my system. Instructions for this modification will follow.
    2) Open the .dmg of the patch in a Finder window
    3) Open a new finder window and browse to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ImageIO.fra mework/Resources
*4) Backup the libRaw.dylib and Raw.plist files. Copy them to a safe location. For extra safety, you can just copy the whole Resources folder to a safe location (Make sure that you COPY it and dont MOVE it)*
    5) Right-click the libRaw.dylib file and select "Get Info". Look at the bottom of the info window and expand the "Ownership & Permissions" tab. In this section, expand the "Details" tab. If the lock icon is in the locked position, click it to unlock it. Change "Owner" to your user name. If requested, enter your system password at this point. Close the info window. This step lets you modify the libRaw.dylib file.
    6) Complete step 5 for the Raw.plist file.
    7) Copy the Raw.plist file from the "Place In System Folder" folder from the patch to the Resources folder. It will ask you if you wnt to overwrite the existing file. Click "Replace".
    8) Open a new finder window and browse to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder.
    * 9) Backup the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file *
    10) Copy the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file from the "Place In Home Directory" folder from the patch to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder. Click "replace" if it asks you.
    11) Here's the tricky part. Download a HEX editor if you don't have one. I used 0xED. It is free and can be downloaded from
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29521
    12) Open the libRaw.dylib file from the Resources folder in your HEX editor.
Note: This is your original libRaw.dylib file from your /System/Library/...../Resources/ folder, NOT the file from the patch.
Use the Find function and search for the string "Pentax *ist DS". Make sure you are using "Search Type: Text" (or equivilent in your editor) and that you use proper case. When you find this string, change the "S" in the "DS" to an "L". The string should now look like "Pentax *ist DL". Use the "Find Next" function to find the next instance of "Pentax *ist DS". Again, change the "S" to an "L". There should be two total instances that you need to change. Save the file and exit the editor.
    13) Open Disk Utility and repair permissions. This will set the raw.plist and libRaw.dylib files back to their original permissions.
    14) Reboot the system.
    15) You should now be able to view .PEF files natively in Aperture and iPhoto. I appologize in advance for any typos. Let me know how this works, as this is my first tutorial of this nature.
    Macbook 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It would appear that my last post was a moot point as the 10.4.7 update adds support for the *ist DL. It's nice to have it biult into the operating system now.

  • Best Practices for sharing media with iMovie and FCPX

So I've a large iMovie Events directory, and would like to use that media with both iMovie and FCPX projects.
I'd rather not duplicate the media, so would prefer to import as references into FCPX.
The dilemma is that I see that it's possible to modify or move media from within the iMovie application, and therefore break the reference to that media with FCPX.
I only see two options:  (1) Never Ever modify the location/name of media in the iMovie Events file (even from within the iMovie app) since I would break an FCPX link if that media is referenced, or (2) always import (copy) the iMovie events into the FCPX Event Library making an independent original so that I can confidently operate on those media files in either application.
I'd surely rather not have to do (2 )(e.g. doubling my storage demands) to gain the flexibility of using either application to edit the video, but really don't want to live with the restrictions of (1).
Thoughts / Solutions?  What might you consider as options or best practices?

Unless there is some other reason, users should own the right to share their mailboxes - it shouldn't be something that demands administrator management (if only so that the administrators aren't swamped by user requests for sharing their mailboxes).
For true shared mailboxes, when the mailbox is created, full access is granted by an administrator.

  • Aperture and iPhoto should use the same library

    Hi all,
It seems that there is a lot of conversation about moving photos between Aperture and iPhoto. For example, some like iPhotos slideshow better but still require Apertures adjustment options. Still others have tried, to no avail, to use Aperture as iPhoto's external editor.
Personally, I have a large iPhoto library with most photos tagged with keywords. I have just started using Aperture and am yet to decide if its extra features are useful for a novice photographer like myself. Other than the price, I see no reason not to use Aperture instead of iPhoto but I would want to import my entire iPhoto library into Aperture.
My question, however, is why we need to 'import' from one app to the other. Without understanding how the aperture / iphoto databases work, I would assume there is no fundamental reason why Aperture could not simply open an existing iPhoto library and visa versa. They both support RAW, keywords, books etc. And while I am sure there are some deviations in the databases, surely each app could simply ignore the features it does not understand.
Is this something that anyone else has considered or think would be good. I would imagine that the easier it is for customers to upgrade from iPhoto to Aperture the better. Does Apple plan on supporting this in the future or is the import option 'good enough'.
    Cheers

Can I and if so how do I best set up Aperture as main app. (master) with iPhoto as sub app that accesses the same library to sort through, look at, order books, etc.
Simply set the Preferences to 'Share Previews with iLife Applications' in Aperture. Then go to iPhoto -> File -> Show Aperture Library. A media browser will open and you can drag the pics from the Browser to the iPhoto Window. Note: You're getting the Aperture Previews not Masters. Note too that if you set iPhoto to Referenced mode (iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced) then you won't use double the disk space.
+Remember though, you are not accessing the Aperture Library. If you make changes in the Aperture Library (Re-edit the shots) after bringing pics to iPhoto, those changes are not reflected in iPhoto.+
This is what William means when he says the iPhoto does not access the Aperture Library.

  • Is it possible for one user to use Aperture and another iPhoto?

I have a new imac 21.5", 3.33ghz, 4gb and I was wondering if it is possible for me as admin user to handle camera downloads automatically with Aperture, and my wife as second user to use iPhoto as automatic camera destination? Any comments would be appreciated.

If you want to use the same account there are a number of possibilities:
    1. Set both Aperture and iPhoto to Do Nothing when a camera is connected. Then each one can launch their preferred app themselves. It's just one extra click.
    2. Use [Cameras|http://www.flexibits.com> to configure what happens when different cameras are connected.
