Aperture 3 and iPhone 4

I imported my old iPhoto library into my new Aperture 3 library....when i try to sync my iPhone 4 with Aperture, I choose to sync the last 20 projects. It seemingly picks 20 random events, both from events/projects created in Aperture and events created in iPhoto years ago, with no rhyme or reason. It DOES NOT check off the most recent events i've created, and the events that are checked are grayed out so i can not manually uncheck them.
All my photos are imported in Aperture and not linked to the iPhoto library. In Aperture I've tried deleting and then generating previews, regenerating thumbnails, repairing permissions, and repairing the database all to no avail. Is this just a horrible bug or is there a solution?
Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. This was also happening with my iPod touch 2nd generation iOS 3 so it seems to be an aperture or itunes issue.

See my reply to a later simplified version of your question. I don't think that either iPhone or iPad recognize RAW files such as NEFs. And the iPhone is not designed to be a mass storage device like a portable flash or portabel hard drive for temporary storage of files, if that's what you're after.  As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have an iPad and have been experimenting with it as a tool for photography, hoping that it would be a nice travel tool for backing up and viewing photos from my Nikon dslr. But both the iPad and iPhone just are not set up to do that well. Both show photos nicely, but organization of photos is very frustrating since you can't create albums on the iPhone or iPad, but only back on your sync computer. (There is one very powerful photo organization app called SortShots, but you import photos to it and it organizes and stores the images wtihin the app not using the native photo app. It doesn't work with NEFs either.) I don't know of any RAW processing software for either device.

  • Aperture and iPhone Photo Export

I have certain projects that I have Aperture export up to my iPhone. Is there any way to have Aperture export my photos at a higher resolution than 320x480 (or whatever the iphone screen res is)?
    thank you

    Hi Simon,
First, it's best to start a new topic for a new, unrelated question.
As for your question, just to clarify -- you have *brown folders* inside your projects, right? Well, it's not clear to me how you get images (versions) into those brown folders directly. Perhaps you have albums in the brown folders, and the albums display the images?
In any case, I don't know of any way to export the images and retain the structure you see with the brown folders. But I have a different approach that should solve your problem.
Most people use one "project" for each separate "shoot". In your case, that might mean each hotel would be its own project. You can create a *blue folder* called, for example, "2009-05 Greece Hotel Shoot", and keep all the projects inside that folder. That would be a common way to use Aperture, and it has the advantage that you can export the entire blue folder and have each project within the folder stored in separate folders. Aperture gives you quite a bit of flexibility for how to format the folder names, too.
    Hope This Helps,

  • Aperture and iPhone Image Size

Hello, i recently tried to sync some photos to Aperture from my iPhone and they came up really small on screen. When i hit the zoom button nothing happens. I'm new to this and would appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction.

  • Users of iPhone photo sync, Aperture, and stacks

For those who use Aperture and the stack feature, do you have the same problem as me when syncing to your iPhone?
    Here is the thing:
Stacks in Aperture are used to group related pictures (usually variants of the same picture). In a stack, you then choose the best picture of the stack and identify it as such. This picture is then the only one that is shown in an album once the stack is closed.
Now if you sync such an album, containing stacks, to your iPhone, the problem is that all pictures in the stack, and not only the best one, is displayed in your iPhone album.
(Note that I also posted this under the category "iPhone" in this forum.)

    More info:
This problem exist not with sync of albums on iPhone/iPad, but when syncing SMART ALBUMS.
If you sync a smart album that contains a stack of pictures, all pictures are put on the iPhone (not only the best picture of the stack as it should).
Please let me know if you have this problem (or not...)

  • Best Video format for Aperture, Final Cut Pro, iPad, and iPhones

I am moving all of my photos and video into Aperture and notice that only .MOV video form my iPhone 4 and .MP4 video from my go pro camera are displayed in Aperture browser mode. The .MPG files form my old Sony Powershot do not show up in the browser or in "Video" searches. I also have a set of very large (13GB)  .AVI video files that I cannot import into Final Cut Pro.
    My first question is:
If I want all of my videos to be completely compatible with all of my Apple products, should I convert everthing to .MOV format, and if so; whcih converter should I use?
    My second question is:
My ten big (13gb) sets of vacation video are still on mini DV cassettes. I have already imported them into a PC as .AVI files. What should I convert them to, in order to edit them in Final Cut Pro; or should I import them again directly into Final Cut Pro? If so, which format is best?
    Thank you for your advice,

    "Is this even possible?."
    No.
First, you don't need any additional software.
Second, every time video is processed it will change in some way. It will never be exactly the same as the original. It may in fact look better. However, you are not dealing with a top of the line camera. There are many compromises in it to make it affordable. These compromises in lens, chip size and quality and so on will be exacerbated as the media is processed. If the shooting conditions are not optimal, light, camera support, content, format, all of these will make reproducing the exact original more difficult and more improbable. That said AVCHD is inherently an excellent format and you should get excellent results. There is a great deal you can do in color correction and effects to improve the image and make it even more pleasing than the original, but this requires work and is not sonething achieved by clicking a button. It is also not something achieved by simply plugging in the camera and running the software. That is not how to get the best out of it. It's complex, professional software that's going to take time to learn, and video production is a complex process that takes time and effort to do really well.
My opinion which is worth what you paid for it.

  • Aperture makes desktop backgrounds and iphone backgrounds blurry.

So, I don't know when exactly this started happening, possibly after 2.1, but here is the issue.
I organize my desktop and iphone backgrounds in aperture with one project for each, with smart albums dividing it up so that I can have different categories. Each photo just has one or two keywords to keep it organized. Then to change my desktop I go into system preferences and choose it from the drop down there. Before this specific time that I can't remember, the desktop would change and it would be perfectly clear and sharp, like the picture. Now when I change it to a background added after that time, it is blurry and pixelated. Also, the same thing occurs with my iPhone. The backgrounds are exactly the size of the iPhone's screen, but pictures added after that time come out blurry on the iPhone.
I've reinstalled OS X a few times and Aperture from scratch a few times but have kept the same library throughout. What could be the issue? I hate not being able to have new backgrounds, for about a few months now.

Success!  Well sort of.  I went into Mission Control Preference Pane (in System Preferences) and fiddled about with a few ticks. The one that seemed to make the difference was the one called Show Dashboard As A Space.  Make sure it's ticked.  This is a bit of a bummer if you want multiple desktops with different personalised photo backgrounds but you don't want the dashboard as a space.  It's still a fault Apple! So if someone finds this solved their issues then please don't mark the post as "this solved my problem", maybe just "this helped".
Because the issue is not resolved for those who don't want the dashboard as a space - those people can only have Apple's own backgrounds on their desktops!  And it is worth point out that without the Show Desktop As Space box ticked, even with Mission Control set to just one background, the Aperture photo would not be reatained through log out and restart etc. AND the actual Desktop/Screen Saver preference dialogue box didn't work properly, taking ages to select a picture and the picture not changing on the background itself until the user threatens to exit the box.  As I say though it all went swimmingly with the Show desktop as space box ticked.
Dear oh dear Apple, with every step "forward" you take there's always the odd lurch backwards into the murky days of Windows 1.0!

  • Can iPhone sync from both Aperture and iPhoto?

I have photos on both - can I get the phone to sync from both or do I just have to choose one?

    Hi,
To keep you informed of my findings...
I decided to export photos from Aperture and iPhoto that I want to be displayed in a folder under the Pictures folder. Then, I ask iTunes to sync photos from that folder instead of Aperture or iPhoto... Seems to work fine so far...

  • Can not sync all photos in Aperture into Iphone 5

I can not sync all photos in Aperture into Iphone 5. It always can sync some photos into 5. Then finish and prompts: "itunes can not synchronize (other)thousands of projects, and see more information in itunes".  That means most of my photos can not seen on Iphone 5, it seems just can't import to 5. Is that the problem of Iphone or the pictures in Aperture, or even just because lack of sufficient space?

    Solved here...

  • If I install a trial version of Aperture and don't like it, will I be able to still use my photo library in iPhoto?

I'm evaluating both Aperture and Adobe's Lightroom to decide which one meets my needs for the best price (got a deal on Lightroom 3 for $120 and I know Aperture 3 is $79 in the Mac App Store).
    I have a few questions:
I currently use iPhoto '11 (9.1.3) and have Photoshop CS4, so I have tools for importing DSLR shots and making pro-type changes in Camera Raw, while also having iPhoto to organize my photo library and syncing Events and Albums with my iPhone and iPad.
I like that I would be able to maintain my iPhoto library data for Faces and Places in Aperture, but am concerned that when the iPhoto library is "upgraded" for Aperture, and I decide I don't really need that program, the upgraded library won't work with iPhoto anymore.
Will I still be able to use iPhoto to access and organize my library, or will it be forever converted for use with Aperture?
I'm considering Lightroom because I have been disappointed with the number of bugs showing up in recent iPhoto releases. I'm a bit weary of buying another photo management software product from Apple. iPhoto '11 crashed my old iMac very frequently (I wound up upgrading to a new iMac due to this and I was expecting to run out of hard drive space in a year or two anyway).
Recently, iPhoto bugs make Events show up multiple times in iTunes when syncing for iPhone and iPad.
If iPhoto management is this unstable, I would like to consider choosing a new method of organizing and syncing to iOS devices and abandoning the iPhoto library method.
Will I find a better user experience with Aperture, or does it also use the single file library and suffer the same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing lately?

The iPhoto library isn't changed in any way by Aperture. Aperture will import the Library and you can choose to copy the files to the Aperture Library or reference them within iPhoto. As long as you don't delete files from the iPhoto Library via Aperture (which you could do if you choose to Reference) there is no impact on iPhoto
Will I still be able to use iPhoto to access and organize my library, or will it be forever converted for use with Aperture?
    They are completely different libraries.
Recently, iPhoto bugs make Events show up multiple times in iTunes when syncing for iPhone and iPad.
    Fixed in the 9.1.3 update.
Will I find a better user experience with Aperture, or does it also use the single file library and suffer the same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing lately?
Like iphoto, Aperture can use the "single file library" or it can use a Referenced Library (just like iphoto can). Note that using a Referenced Library offers not a whit more in terms of features or capabilities. It's file storage plain and simple. Nothing more.
No you won't see the "same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing..." because Aperture is an entirely different allication.
But you my see Aperture or Lightroom struggles

My wife and I have different iTune accounts.  How do we share purchaed content between our ipads and iphones?

You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

  • Exporting 7 min. video from Aperture and received error.  How can I get the original back?

I uploaded a video from my iphone 5 into Aperture and then I tried to export it to my desktop.  After I clicked on Export, it attempted to export for a while but then gave me an error message saying that 0 of 1 videos was exported and it couldn't export.  Now it shows the video in the album in Aperture, but it won't play and I can't do anything with it.  I have tried to recall the original but it says there is no original and it says there are no referenced files when I try to reference the files.  The clip also shows an arrow pointing to the right with a yellow triangle by it.  This is located in the bottom right of the image, right next to the video icon.  My concern is that I tried to export the original.  Any ideas on how I can fix this and get the video back?

The clip also shows an arrow pointing to the right with a yellow triangle by it.  This is located in the bottom right of the image, right next to the video icon.
Is that the badge you are seeing? Then Aperture has lost the connection to the original video file.
Now it shows the video in the album in Aperture, but it won't play and I can't do anything with it.  I have tried to recall the original but it says there is no original and it says there are no referenced files when I try to reference the files.
You tried to reconenct and locate the referenced file? Then you probably imported the video as "Managed" and then the commands for referenced files do not work.
Look directly into your Aperture library package, if the video is still there:
Select the Aperture Library in the Finder and ctrl-click(or right click) it.
Then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up.
In the Finder window that opens scroll down to the "Masters" folder and open its subfolder "2013" and then go to the month and day, when you imported your video. Do you see your video there, or any imports at all?
If you see the video in your library package, copy it to the Desktop, ad check, if you camn play it.
    What do you see?

  • Synch from itunes on iMac to Ipad and iPhone

I've eventually decided to upgrade,  my iPad (7.0.4) and iPhone (7.0.4).
I lost loads of data and iTunes backups corrput (so Apple says), so iPad had to rebuilt as if new.
So am woeking through everything to re-establish to as it was before.
I AM LOOSING THE WILL TO LIVE.
iTunes...I had NO music data at all on Pad or Phone.
On my iMac, in iTunes 11.1.4 created 2 playlists and synched them to my Pad and Phone, ONLY 2 playlists. NOTHING ELSE WAS CHECKED, I TRIPLE CHECKED.
Success - got 2 playlists on Pad and Phone.
    BUT BUT BUT
Noticed loads of other tracks, 196 of them.
Could not work out where they'd come from, then realised "Ah they're in Purchased folder on iTunes".
BUT I DID NOT ASK FOR THESE 2 B SYNCHED. NO WAY.
So i removed everything in iTunes, in Pruchased folder.
I tried to synch again, choosing nothing, i.e. no songs, in the hope these would be removed.
    NO.
So I have a Pad and Phone with 196 purchased songs and I cannot get rid of them.
GOING MAD!!!!! HELP PLEASE. I moved from Windows to avoid this rubbish.....

    I had a similar problem (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24525903#24525903)
The solution in my case was to start iPhoto and let it update the library, even thu itunes was set up to sync with Aperture.

  • Aperture and iPhoto - do they co-exist?

I have been using iPhotos to import all pictures/videos from Digital Camera, iPhones, iPads for over year, although I never knew where the files were stored. In the past I could only email photos within the iPhotos 11 s/w itself, but I could not attach an file in Gmail/Ymail etc.
Until last night I installed Aperture 3. I selected a folder "Pictures" and clicked Import from iPhoto Library, then I was shocked ....my Macbook HDD space shrinks from 40GB free to 1.29GB and still keep shrinking....Was Aperture copying my picture files and double-occupy my HDD space? The import runs for over 4 hours, and during that time I have to remove some of my music, videos, TV shows in Tunes to trash (to free up another 20 GB of space). Until Aperture finished importing all photos, I had only 2.5GB free
This morning I checked iPhoto, and it seems that all pictures were still there. I tried to delete a picture in iPhoto, but it still shows up in Aperture 3.
    Questions -
1). How to avoid "duplication" of pictures on my MacBook Pro (i.e. iPhotos + Aperture)
2). Now all my pictures were "copied" to user/Pictures/ folder. I deleted an image (actually a sub-folder) but it seems show up in Aperture (until I delete that project). For housekeeping purposes, do I have to delete TWICE for a single file?
Any other suggestions for my scenario?
    Thanks!

    Thanks everyone.
I need one more clarifications - regarding how Aperture stores/index pictures.
When I "import from iPhoto Library" in Aperture, I selected save pictures to myusername/Pictures/ folder. Now whenever I deleted a project (or an image) within Aperture, and clicked on "Aperture -> Empty Aperture Trash". However, if I open Finder, I will still see the folders (and files) of the images.
Do I have  duplication of my photos? Does it imply I can delete the folder "Pictures" in Finder?

  • Aperture & Iphoto & Iphone & Appletv

hello, I'd like to use only aperture and not iphoto. Is it possible? But how I can see photos on appletv and on iphone without syncronizinig with aperture?

I agree. Syncing Aperture to AppleTV works like a charm and you can set up some real sweet smartfolders to do so. Personally, I select all two star images and above and have them colour adjusted, cropped and sized to 16:9 1080 and be ready for syncing by iTunes.
My image library is now front and center on the big screen TV an being enjoyed by the whole family.
When it comes to syncing, I have two smartfolders called "Best new, iPhone" and "Best old, iPhone". That way I can control how many images are stransferred and how they look.
This technology is really great and has put new life into our photo collection.

  • Photostream question (Mavericks, ML, MBP, Mac Pro and iPhone)

    hi all,
i am posting the dialogs from Aperture enabling various aspects of Photostream/iCloud (mac pro and ML at the top and MBP and Mavericks at the bottom) and i am having a devil of a time figuring out how to manage all of this. i take a /ton/ of pictures on my iPhone and i seem to have a multiplicity of issues i can't solve by googling. i have read what i can find in the help and faq sections.
i should also say that while i SYNC my phone via iTunes on my MBP i /import/ photos into Aperture on my desktop machine which is a Mac Pro. i keep a small library in Aperture on the MBP and do check some of the folders to sync to the iPhone. i find this easiest since i am have a big Aperture database that i keep on the large HD on the Mac Pro but for customizing Apps, synced images, music etc i find it easier to manage on the laptop.
anyway, i have the following problems/questions:
    1. do i need to SYNC my iphone to my Mac Pro with some frequency and physically import photos into Aperture in order to not LOSE the photos off the phone after some period of time? i mean, i /don't/ do this with an discipline and i have been assuming that they all remain there in a "monthly dated photostream" folder /until/ i do a physical import from the phone but something i read recently caused me to think that there is a 1000 image limit and that anything NOT IMPORTED by a certain timeframe means photos will basically get bumped off the phone never to be seen again if they are not physically imported.
    2. can i leave images in a monthly dated photostream folder (on both the laptop and desktop machines) and basically never touch them - assuming that i am also IMPORTING these images into projects into Aperture?
    3. i have an "iPhone Sync" folder in Aperture and i have selected this folder to sync via iTunes with my iPhone. however, when this folder gets to the iPhone the images in here always seem to be mixed up with other images that i took ON THE PHONE. so if i have images on the laptop that i dropped into a folder and synced /to/ the phone - is there a way to keep these separate from what i am seeing on the phone in terms of photos i took on the phone? when they get mixed together it is so confusing i can't figure out what is happening and i can't find anything. i would like to keep the synced images independent of the images shot on the phone.
    4. is there a Idiots Guide to Photostream on the iPhone that someone can give me?
    A. i am seeing a "Photos" icon and when i hit this it seems to show me a YEARLY list and then in the yearly list there are DATED groups. my most recent dated group shows /locations/ as well and i am not sure if this is an option or what. ALSO, why are images that i synced in a folder on my is there a way to delete these images? is it possible images that were synced from my laptop are showing up in here and if so is there a way to prevent this?
    B. Albums are showing "Camera Roll" "My Photo Stream" as well as "Events (from my mac)". Event (from my mac) is supposed to show Images in Projects that were SYNCED from my laptop and Camera Roll (390 images) is supposed to show images taken on my iPhone since the last import if i deleted everything on the last import? Does My Photo Stream (1000 images) somehow show all the images in Camera Roll (taken on the iPhone) AND somehow /some/ of the images synced from my laptop in some way? i mean, this is what i think i am seeing but it is uber confusing.
THANKS for any help on this,
    jonathan
