Aperture 3 and Keywords

I'm sure I'm not alone as an iPhoto user who uses Keyword Manager. Can anyone give a quick overview in how keywords in Aperture are handled for us new to Aperture?

I can recommend you the online help, here the chapter about keyword handling:

  • How to export ranking and keywords from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
I like to edit RAWs in Aperture but still want to keep iPhoto for JPGs, sharing and slidshows... However, I cannot get the keywords and rankings from Aperture into iPhoto. The JPGs have other Metadata attached to them, but not the ones that matter the most here - ranking and keywords. Subtitles for example are also missing in the exported picture.
I tried various ways of exporting/importing the pictures (of course "including metadata"), but did not yet succeed. I did expect these two applications to get along more smoothly, however there must be a way to do this, right? Please let me know!

    Redgo,
I can't answer your specific question, but I too like to use iPhoto for slideshows.
I don't do this by sharing the libraries or having duplicate copies. In Aperture, I make an album with the pictures for my slideshow. Then in iPhoto, I grab that album from Aperture and make an iPhoto slideshow from that. It uses the previews, but medium-res previews are fine for a slideshow. It wouldn't be so good for printing (but I imagine you'd use Aperture to do that).
Just my 2 cents about an alternate workflow.

  • Aperture 2.0 and keywords

In "preference" from the aperture menu, I made selection "metadata" ticked the box "viewer" and selected "set 1" as "viewer expanded". This will result that in the viewer pane underneath every image the keywords are shown.
In the metadata inspector I have chosen in the menu for "viewer expanded" and moved the "keyword brick" to the top position. This will result that the keywords are displayed under the image as the first item, so there is space enough for more than one keyword. So far so good.
If you close now aperture and bring it up again, the keywords are not shown underneath every images, while other metadata is shown underneath every image. You have to go to the metadata inspector and click on every image to bring up the keywords under the image.
I think this is rather strange (bug?). Or do I miss something.
    Iemke

I have also been having issues trying to get keywords to show up in the viewer mode. I can do it by going to preferences/metadata and in both the viewer and browser set them to show caption and keyword. It is a drag, because I would prefer to have the rating showing in the browser. Otherwise, I need to follow a similar procedure than you to see the keywords.

  • Can Aperture import keywords and ratings from Lightroom?

Decided to download the Aperture trial, and imported 17,000 images without a problem until I realised that my keywords and star ratings are missing (and even some vertical shots are horizontal).
Is there a way to get Aperture to look at the sidecar files generated by Lightroom? Without that I'm unlikely to use Aperture for anything other than books that iPhoto can't do.
    Thanks,
    Nigel

    Unfortunately, no.
It might be possible by use of AppleScript (the script would need to parse the XML files and put this data into Aperture), but this would not be trivial to write and to the best of my knowledge nobody has done it.
It's a shame, as Aperture can export XMP sidecar files so LR will pick up Aperture ratings and keywords (but not adjustments) just fine.

  • Aperture photo transfer and keywords

I'm new to Aperture, and I've just started to build my library. I have been using i-photo for years and I find the Aperture program's import and keyword functions a bit confusing.
I like to shoot Raw and when I'm on location, where I dump my cards to my Macbook laptop. Sometimes I have the time to edit the photos and place keywords on the photos while I'm still out of town. But I would like to transfer those photos to my desktop MacPro when I get home. That's my main library.
What is the proper procedure to import the keywords and edited Raw files to my desktop with out loosing either the edited changes or the keywords.
Or do I have to simply use the laptop as a review and reject vehicle until I get home and then do all my editing and Keywording when I get back on the MacPro?
Also one last novice question..... what is a light table?
    Thanks

Which version of Aperture are you using (AP 2 or AP 3)?
I ask because your system info shows a G5.
If you are running AP 3 on Intel hardware, then the bottom half of this page under 'Merging Libraries' should run down the procedure pretty well.
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=3%26sec tion=3%26tasks=true
If you are running AP2, then I leave it to those more familiar with the procedure needed for your situation.
The light table function is used to organize images on a flat surface to evaluate a layout arrangement or to see which images look good together and which don't belong (for say a book).
    Added comment about light table.

  • Aperture and iPhoto should use the same library

    Hi all,
It seems that there is a lot of conversation about moving photos between Aperture and iPhoto. For example, some like iPhotos slideshow better but still require Apertures adjustment options. Still others have tried, to no avail, to use Aperture as iPhoto's external editor.
Personally, I have a large iPhoto library with most photos tagged with keywords. I have just started using Aperture and am yet to decide if its extra features are useful for a novice photographer like myself. Other than the price, I see no reason not to use Aperture instead of iPhoto but I would want to import my entire iPhoto library into Aperture.
My question, however, is why we need to 'import' from one app to the other. Without understanding how the aperture / iphoto databases work, I would assume there is no fundamental reason why Aperture could not simply open an existing iPhoto library and visa versa. They both support RAW, keywords, books etc. And while I am sure there are some deviations in the databases, surely each app could simply ignore the features it does not understand.
Is this something that anyone else has considered or think would be good. I would imagine that the easier it is for customers to upgrade from iPhoto to Aperture the better. Does Apple plan on supporting this in the future or is the import option 'good enough'.
    Cheers

Can I and if so how do I best set up Aperture as main app. (master) with iPhoto as sub app that accesses the same library to sort through, look at, order books, etc.
Simply set the Preferences to 'Share Previews with iLife Applications' in Aperture. Then go to iPhoto -> File -> Show Aperture Library. A media browser will open and you can drag the pics from the Browser to the iPhoto Window. Note: You're getting the Aperture Previews not Masters. Note too that if you set iPhoto to Referenced mode (iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced) then you won't use double the disk space.
+Remember though, you are not accessing the Aperture Library. If you make changes in the Aperture Library (Re-edit the shots) after bringing pics to iPhoto, those changes are not reflected in iPhoto.+
This is what William means when he says the iPhoto does not access the Aperture Library.

  • Aperture and Snow Leopard problems

I have multiple issues with Aperture after upgrading to SL (currently on 10.6.2). The major issues are:
    (1) Whenever I import new images or make modification to existing images Aperture does not quit anymore. Command quit doesn't do anything and I have to force quit in order to exit program.
    (2) After importing new files, often not all images are shown in the project or album (although all images have been imported and the tooltip shows the correct number of images in the project/album). Furthermore, keywords searches do not work. A force quit and reopening solves this problem.
    (2) When saving or opening images the dialog box does not work properly and some folders are overlayed with black/grey boxes and things look corrupted.
Obviously, I have installed 2.1.4 and I do not have Aperture in any subfolder (it is directly in the app folder). Furthermore, I have deleted the preferences file (com.apple.Aperture.plist) but this did not help.
What to do next? Re-install Aperture? If I have to do this what docs do I have to delete and how can I avoid loosing any important information? I have a very large image library with many adjustments, keywords, rankings etc and I definitely do not want to loose any of that information. Thanks much for your help and advise.

I decided to backup up everything. I then erased the HD and reinstalled Leopard Disk 1 and 2. Did all the system updates and added all the optional software on the disks. Then installed Snow Leopard. Then installed Aperture and all updates including 2.1.4 and my printer drivers. Then followed with all my other apps like MS Office and Quicken.
    Took about 2 hours.
Everything works perfectly and is quite snappy including Aperture. No problems with any of the Aperture functions.
It's a lot of work but its easy to do if you have other things to do while the software is installing.
If you are up to all that and dont mind the time, you'll be happy plus you now have a clean, fresh disk.

  • New Mac Pro - Aperture and a massive new project - help me be smart!

I am receiving a Mac Pro 2.66 Friday and adding in 4 GB RAM and 2 500GB HDS, Aperture and Final Cut Studio and a lot of music software. Moving up from a G4 450 DP.
I received a very nice fellowship and will officially begin the project on June 1, continuing until August, 2008. I will be filming in all 92 Indiana counties - mainly nature and historic sites for a few DVD programs for schools in my county. I expect to end up with 30,000 + images when it is all said and done.
Before I begin, do any of you experienced digital photographers have any advice for someone in my position? You know, "what I wish I had known when I started using Aperture" kind of advice.
I use a Nikon D70, 5 various lenses and will shoot RAW. I am an experienced photographer, so I am not looking for shooting tips, etc.
    Thanks for any tips.
    G4 450DP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

That sounds like a great project.
People have already emphasized the importance of backing up. I can't pile on with any more emphasis. Backup, backup, and backup some more. I have five copies of every RAW file I've ever made across four different disks and DVD's. The DVD's are located in a remote location. I had an issue with my hard drives about three months ago that caused all my hard drives to loose their data--complete loss. If not for my DVD's, I would've lost 30,000 RAW files let alone all the processed images.
I'm working an article on my backup strategy that should be published in the next week or so. If you want, send me an e-mail and I'll give you a link to my site when it's done.
This next article is about file naming. I've been using this same convention for 8 years. It works as well as anything. The other recommendations are also excellent especially the ones about adjusting your convention when sending to clients.

This final article is about my initial workflow. I am not a "copy the CF card prior to import" kind of guy. Call me gutsy. Metadata and keywords will be your most important friend during a project this size. Being able to quickly get to images for various purposes will be extremely important. To be a high end, high capacity photographer also means being a data manager. It's a fact of life. Secondly, start early and don't get behind keywording. That will only slow you down later. The key to this in Aperture is using the keyboard shortcuts. Learn those. It'll help lost later.

Both my iPhoto, Aperture and OX is update still having problem asking me to update my iPhoto.

Make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) if you don't already have a currnet backup of the library and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Another Aperture and iPhoto problem i am having

I today imported 5 photos into aperture, i done keywords and other metadata pictures are all jpeg large 12 MP images. I then go-to the new iphoto 09 and again select show Aperture library find the pictures and drag them into a album on iphoto for easy uploading to facebook etc 3 of the pictures in iphoto when clicked are good clear images the other two when clicked are poor quality scaled down images why?. I thought the masters were left within aperture, and iphoto just loads them from AP. Can somebody explain ?

For most folks using the Previews is pefectly good. And bearing in mind what Facebook will do to the shots there’s no doubt that the Previews will be perfectly adequate.
You can set the quality of the Previews in the Aperture Preferences -> Preview Pane.
If you want to use full size pics then you’ll need to export from Aperture and then import to iPhoto. However, if Facebook is the destination then that’s utterly pointless. From what I’ve seen no matter what you upload they compress the cr*p out of it, strip the metadata and colour management.

  • Aperture and iTunes

    Hi,
Does anyone use Aperture with iTunes (copying photos from Aperture to an iPod)?
I have just got a new 5th gen iPod, and have set-up a smart folder in Aperture (I use an iPod keyword for shots I wish to export to iPod).
When I go into iTunes I can select Aperture, and indeed the smart folder, however, the number of photos shown in iTunes rarely matches the actual amount of shots with the Keyword in Aperture.
Also, when both apps. are open, if I add the Keyword to a new photo in Aperture, the number of photos in iTunes does not seem to be effected - Does iTunes only check this once?
    I hope someone can help....

I've had the same problem. What I've found out is that smart albums don't update until you click on the album. So itunes will only update what was in the album the last time you viewed that album in Aperture. I've also found that itunes needs to be open after you have updated the smart album in Aperture. I wish it would update in the background but form what I can tell it doesn't.

  • Aperture and iPhoto 08 integration problems

    Hi.
I just bought Leopard and iLife 08. I read in an article (see link below) a great way to integrate pictures from your Aperture library into the iPhoto library:
    - Setup Aperture to share previews with iLife
    - Setup iPhoto to not copy items into the iPhoto library
    - Import photos from Aperture into iPhoto by using the 'Show Aperture library' feature
Photos from Aperture (actually the previews from Aperture) are now in your iPhoto library. The great thing about this is that the Aperture previews are referenced so when you make changes to the photos in Aperture the changes become visible in iPhoto.
However, I have discovered two problems until now with this integration:
    1. When I make a change to a photo in Aperture the change is not visible in the iPhoto preview (or what it is). But when I double-click on the preview in iPhoto the full image has the change I made in Aperture.
    2. Keywords from Aperture also gets imported into iPhoto. However, some of my photos have more than one keyword in Aperture and when imported into iPhoto some of the photos have all keywords and some only have one of the keywords they have in Aperture.
Is there anybody out there having the same problems and even better a solution?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The great thing about this is that the Aperture previews are referenced so when you make changes to the photos in Aperture the changes become visible in iPhoto.
Well as you can see, that's not actually true. If you change the pics via Aperture there is no way for iPhoto to know about this change, and therefore no way that it will then update your thumbnail in iPhoto. I guess this integration is intended for after you've finished processing your pics.

  • Aperture and ACR workflow

For those who find Aperture's Camera RAW conversion too primitive, the program can be used in a simple workflow that maximizes your productivity while insuring maximum quality conversion.
1- IMPORT your RAW images into Aperture and add keywords and other tags.
Aperture brings in the RAW image UNALTERED.
2- COMPARE AND SORT your images using the EXCELLENT TOOLS in Aperture.
You can also freely experiment with versions to test ideas for everything from exposure to B&W conversions.
3- SELECT YOUR BEST IMAGES inside Aperture.
Most of us working in the professional world are really only interested in using the top 1% or less of a typical shoot. It is only those that need to be converted as output for Giclee printing or as digital masters for retouching and CMYK printing.
4- EXPORT THOSE BEST IMAGES using the export "DIGITAL MASTERS..." command.
Many of us find Aperture's RAW conversion to be excellent but for those who don't, you can choose at this point all your selected images, which by now should be a very short list, and export them as UNALTERED RAW files to a folder outside of Aperture.
5- CONVERT those exported camera RAW images using whatever conversion program you want, for many it will be ACR, and do any extra retouching in Photoshop.
And for those worried about Aperture's filing system, you can store these exported "Best Images" exactly like you used to do, in old fashioned folders on your hard disk, in whatever categories make sense to you.
For those of us producing professional work on always shorter deadlines, Aperture is an outstanding tool that makes our job much easier.
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Tom, first allow me to congratulate you on starting a practical thread. Now that many of us own Aperture, and I'm not saying the issues threads aren't useful, figuring out where it fits in our workflow is a fine idea.
Here is my (pre-Aperture) workflow, and some ideas for an interim (working with what we have) post-Aperture flow. I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions.
Pre: Conversion mostly in ACR/Bridge (occasionally in C1Pro-generally fleshtones). Color Space generaly set in camera as Adobe RGB, same for PS. Preliminary sharpening with PhotoKit, noise reduction if necessary with neat image or noise ninja, adjustments, aspect ratio crops, etc. Save as TIFF/16bit layered if necessary/add "Base" to filename when saving. Reopen in PS for output specific sharpening, save flattened copy. Open in ImagePrint-Print. Library has been on external HDs, backed up to duplicate HDs which are taken off premises. Current library size:700Gigs and growing fast.
Post: Import into Aperture from Card, also backup RAWs to DVD. As suggested here, do sorts and picks in Aperture. Maybe do some crude adjusting for low res images for client proofs (web or contact sheets-sorry, haven't tried using Aperture with Epson drivers or tried the web posting). Export RAW picks for conversion and editing elsewhere (I have tested and the camera EXIFs are still there in PS (I'm not sure they will be on re-import?). So, now I've got a RAW with an attached .xmp, one or more Tiffs. I can reimport the TIFFs, but can I re-associate them with the Master? Is there any way that I can import the .xmp and associate it with the master? So, I can pick, web, go to printer and archive (although I'll hit a disk space issue-ideas there?)
I tried to do this without asking for changes in Aperture, but not using Aperture where I felt it was immature. There are already enough discussions about conversion, editing and storage. The interface is promising and I would welcome any shortcuts you can come up with. Meanwhile, I'm going to try with new shoots, and a few existing shoots for experimanetation, but leave my old library intact. Then I'm going to put Aperture's library on an 800Gig external eSATA RAID0 -two disk; and back up to another. Wish me luck.

  • Exporting Ratings, Labels, and Keywords to DNG/XMP

I am a long-time Lightroom user in search of an efficient iPad rating and labeling solution.  I've recently found PixelSync which provides an amazing UI just for that, but syncing to Aperture.  So I got that to see if I can export my ratings, labels, and keywords, and also compare Aperture with Lightroom.
Following Peter Krogh's excellent workflow idea. I prefer to sync my metadata edits back to DNG specifically for the purpose of using it as the package tying the RAW iimage and ratings, keywords, etc.  Lightroom syncs such data back to DNG upon demand (a menu choice).
Aperture has a menu item to sync IPTC data back to master, and I see a DNG is updated in some way.  Yet I don't see the rating, not label, updated, when syncing to Media Pro (or any other EXIF viewer which reads DNG).  There are also some presets which have checkboxes next to IPTC fields; selecting Rating and Label as checked in several of them did not lead to them appearing in the DNG though.
I've bought the Lightbox XMP export plugin, but that wants to run in 32-bit mode, and though does its job, you have to select the location for the export.  Similarly, exporting master from Aperture, I could do IPTC4XMP, but then again I have to select the location and I don't care about the RAW.  Export Metadata menu item again asks for output location and exports in plain text.
While all this seems scriptable, I wonder is there a way to just sync back to DNG?
    Cheers,
    Alexy

OK -- the problem was with my EXIF viewer, Media Pro.  When I checked the DNGs in Adobe Bridge, I see the ratings are in fact exported from Aperture vie the Metadata=>Write IPTC Metadata to Master.  Keep in kind that I found all possivle "IPTC presets" dialogues and checked Rating and Label checkboxes in them, so I'm not sure it will work out of the box.
    Now there's a great rating workflow with DNG=>Lightroom AND Aperture=>iPad rating=>Aperture=>DNG=>Lightroom.

  • Faces and Keywords

I woild like to update my keywords with names in faces without exporting photos.
    Exists another way?

Until someone comes up with a better suggestion, I would do this:
. Add the Names you would like to use as Keywords to your Keyword list. (The best way to do this, imho, is to create a tabbed text file and import it. I prefix all Keywords I use to create a Keyword hierarchy with "aa." -- this forces them to the top of my Keyword list, and helps me to not use my Keyword containers as Keywords (which has significant advantages). One can simply add the new Keywords using the Keyword HUD, however.)
. Create a new Smart Album. Call it "Use to add name Keyword to named Faces". Assign the Filter Rules "Face" "is" "InsertFacesNameHere" and "Rating" "is greater than or equal to" "unrated" to the Smart Folder.
Periodically select this Smart Album, change "InsertFacesNameHere" to one of your Faces names, select all in the Browser, and drag the name you want from the Keywords HUD and drop it on your selected images. Repeat for each named Face, as desired.
Why are you doing this? As the above shows, the Faces names are usable in the same way within Aperture as Keywords are.
Message was edited by: Kirby Krieger (cleaned up and added final question).

  • Aperture and iPhoto Events

Just wondering if I do decide to switch to Aperture 3, how does it handle importing all my iPhoto events? Do they become "Projects" and behave the same way? I know the app just came out but any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

it freezes every time at the same place.
Suggests that there's a problem in the iPhoto Library at that place, no?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
