Aperture 3 and Remote Library Management

I'm a photographer and often travel internationally. Having experienced data loss before, I'm trying to remove this factor altogether by using a Mac Mini Server that I can connect to while on the road. I have Lion Server installed, but not sure if that's necessary for what I'd like to do. I'd love to hear some feedback regarding this if anyone has experience in this area. My workflow is 1. Shoot 2. Transfer Project Home 3. Process images later.  What I'd like to do:
- Send Aperture projects over the internet to my Mac Mini
- Add the projects to Aperture for backup
My Mac Mini setup:
- 2011 Mac Mini  |  2.3GHz i5  |  2GB RAM  |  500GB
- 2TB Mirrored RAID (hardware)
- External 3.5" SATA sled for offsite vault option
- iCloud Account with Back To My Mac *enabled*
My best guess says the easiest way to do this is to 'Connect As...' to initiate the transfer of the Aperture 3 project to the desktop. Once it's on the desktop, use 'Share Screen...' to drag this project from the desktop into the Aperture library. Because the Aperture 3 library resides on the external RAID-1 I won't have to update a vault at regular intervals, however I do have the external SATA sled to vault to for triple redundancy if necessary. Is this the most effecient procedure for updating remotely?
Thanks in advance for your time!

Hallo Graham,
that is a tricky question you have posted. The best way to do what you want will depend on the circumstances you will find when you are travelling, as well as on the data rate you require.
How big are your projects? Hundreds of huge RAW images or only a selected few?
Are you travelling in well develloped regions with good and reliable internet connections, or are we talking of the outback, with no reliable internet and only two hours of electricity supply a day, and having to rely on your batteries?
If we are talking about travelling to well develloped urban areas, with good quality internet, then the procedure you describe will work very well, I think. You will be able to transfer whole projects, even with huge file sizes.
If you have a poor internet connection however, or the power going on and off intermittendly, I do not think you will be able to reliably transfer whole projects at once, you will have to do it in easy installments, and check each file afterwards, if the transfer was successful.
Also it worries me a little bit, that you made no mention of backing up your images on site, or have I misunderstood your post? I never would rely on the images transferred by internet as the only backup, if you are not able to convince yourself that the transfer was o.k.

You probably have to run one or all of the IPHOTO resets/repairs over your library.   Its in IPHOTO help which keys you have to hold down while opening IPHOTO.

  • Aperture vs. iphoto library manager

I have > 37,000 photos, and am adding constantly.  This seems to have brought iphoto to its knees.  It keeps re-dating half of my photos to 2041, and runs slowly.  At the Apple store they advised switching to aperture.  Someone else suggested iphoto library manager.  I am less concerned about the cost ($70 vs. $24) than saving time-I work 80-100 hours a week, and I do not have hours and hours to "make things work."  I would greatly appreciate comments and suggestions.  Thanks.

If iPhoto is slow when browsing the iPhoto library, apertre will probably slow too. Both applications are sharing the same library format.
    I have > 37,000 photos,
That is no reason for iPhoto being slow, unless your libryr is so large, that there is not enough space left on your drive.  How much free space is on your system drive and the drive with your iPhoto library?
Keep at least 20 GB free on your internal drive and more on the drives , where you are storing your photo libraries. Libraries may need temporarily more storage, when they are being repaired or rebuild.
What is your iPhoto version and MacOS X version? And how much RAM has your Mac?
Did the slowness start, after you imported new photos? Then this may be temporary and iPhoto still be processing faces, previews, etc. Or one of the photos or videos you imported is not readable and needs to be removed.
Did you install or upgrade any new software recently?
Also, iPhoto may be slow, if the library needs repairing.
Try to repair the library as described by Old Toad  ':Rebuild iPhoto Version 11:
If repairing does not help, update the backup pf your library and try rebuilding.

  • Aperture and iPhoto library integration.

    So here is my predicament:-
I'm new to Aperture but have more than enough experience in iPhoto. I'm 99% sure that I'm just missing something small so hopefully this wont be a hard question to answer.
I tend to use iPhoto as a photo management program as I love the way it looks and feels; especially the new version as part of iLife '11. Now I understand you can import your iPhoto library into Aperture HOWEVER is it possible to then update the Aperture library later on down the track without re-cataloguing (think thats the best way to put it) the iPhoto library all together?

Terrence, sounds like you have your brain wrapped around aperture quite well. I do not. So please forgive me if this question is redundant. Sometimes you just have to ask in your own words, if you know what I mean. I am about to download Aperture's 30 day trial.
In essence, iPhoto and Aperture cannot share a library, but they can access each other's libraries? Can you just preview iPhoto's library from within Aperture and vice-versa without having to import the photos? And if you import your existing iPhoto library into Aperture you then have two copies of each photo, one in Aperture and one in iPhoto, thus doubling the space on the HDD that photos are taking up?
I do understand the changes made in one program cannot be viewed in another.
Thank you for taking time to share your expertise with us!

  • Aperture and iPhoto library deleted

I upgraded my Aperture w/no problem. About one month later, all images in Aperture and iPhoto dissapeared. "Genius Bar" checked, said no problem and didn't have a clue. Bought a Time-Machine backup at store, had a consultant there show me how to set up, but he had a problem as the Airport Utility was gone. He said that was rare and downloaded it. He suggested there could be a connection to all this. I'm afraid to use the iMac. Help? Doing search for images or libraries no good, will show libraries, but with zero files. Tnx.  Leif

How did you import your old iPhoto photos? And with what Aperture version?
Before the unified Aperture - iPhoto library has been introduced, it was possible to import an iPhoto library as referenced. This left all originals in the iPhoto library, so iPhoto continued to work, but Aperture could use the master files. Is that the way you imported your iPhoto library, with the master files in there original location?
When trying to e.g. export a file Aperture says 'The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again.'.
That is the typical error message, when Aperture cannot access the original files. And Aperture wil not be able to do anything with your images, unless you restore the missing originals.
Just moved my Aperture-library to my new iMac.
Where did you move your Aperture library from ? From an older mac?  From a backup?
Did Aperture work on that old Mac and could access the originals?
Do you still have that old mac, and is there any chance that recovery software could retrieve the missing original files on that mac?
Sometimes Aperture reports originals as missing, even if they are managed inside the Aperture library.
You can find out, where Aperture is looking for the original files, if you select some image files in the browser and use Aperture's command "File > Locate Referenced Files".
In the panel that opens, you can see the path to missing files in the upper right corner below the thumbnail.
What do you see, when you use that command?

  • ITunes 10 and iTunes Library Manager 5.3

Is there any kind soul out there on a Mac who uses Doug's iTunes Library Manager 5.3 and has upgraded from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10? Does iTunes Library Manager 5.3 work with version 10?
I am NOT looking for people telling me to use iTunes' own multiple library feature; I already have a complex multi-library/multi-preference/multi-hard drive set up and will only update to iTunes 10 if it works with Doug's iTunes Library Manager 5.3 (or if Doug updates; no mention of iTunes 10 on his website).
I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who's actually upgraded to iTunes 10 and is using iTunes Library Manager 5.3.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Trouble with iPhoto and iPhoto library manager.

I had trouble with my iPhoto constantly crashing, so I downloaded and used iPhoto Library Manager. Now when I am trying to get back to using iPhoto by re-importing my pictures, I keep getting a notification saying there is not enough space on my harddrive. I have spent a long time deleting large and unneccessary files all over my computer, but I am still unable to import my images to the iPhoto library.
Does anyone have an idea of what I can do? I am starting to get worried that I will never be able to reach my pictures again
+ I have deleted all iPhoto iPod caches or whatever they're called based on recommendation from many sites.

OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.

  • IPhoto does not open back-up library and requests library manager which does not work either

    Hello,
I have a problem and NO idea how to fix it. I try to write it in bullet points to make it easier to read:
    - My MacbookPro (from 2009) with current software (mavericks, all updates) went offline due to lack of battery while I was working in iPhoto
    - When I rebooted the Mac, iPhoto said that the library is damaged and should be repaired
    - The "repaired" version had lost tons of organizing elements (e.g. the order of the pictures and so on) so I used my time machine and took a back-up of the library from 1 hour ago
    - The back-up library was copied successfully in the according file (user-pictures) after I deleted the current one
    - When I wanted to open iPhoto now it requested to use the library manager as the version of the pictures are "old"
    - I downloaded the library manager and tried to use it, however, this tool explains me now that the pictures were used with a newer version of iPhoto so I shall open iPhoto instead
    - Again, when I then try to opne iPhoto, it requests the library manager and so on
So, I am not able to get access to my pictures again, although the library in the folder seems to be of correct size (around 55 GB). Does anyone have any idea how to fix that problem?
    Many thanks in advance!!!
    Johannes

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager Issue With Faces

I use iPhoto ’11. I just recently imported some photos from my iMac iPhoto to my Macbook using the product iPhoto Library Manager. I thought everything went well until closer inspection. A lot of the faces in the imported library are off meaning for example, the people may be in the centre of the photo but the face tags are off to the left or right.
I thought I would manually try to fix this. However when I try to “add a face”, it looks like it’s going to work until I leave the photo and come back to it. The face tag has disappeared. Also on some photos, I can’t even click “add a face”. A few of the pictures say there is an unnamed face but there isn’t.
Any suggestions? Would it help if I reinstalled iPhoto 11?
    Tom

If you export out of iPhoto with Format=JPEG and the checkboxes selected to include keywords you can keep the keywords, titles and descriptions. If you check the box for Locations I believe you will get the faces also but am not sure on that.
iPhoto Library Manager keeps keywords, titles, description and Faces and Places when it copes between libraries.  The fact that you had faces problems leads me believe that the library you were rebuilding with iPLM was damaged initially.
But you could check that out very easily.  Create a new library, import about 10 photos and identify the faces in them.  Then rebuild that library with iPLM.  If it comes up the same then there's a problem with iPLM.  It it comes up good then the original library was the culprit.

  • Aperture and iPhoto Library (not my own)

A friend has sent me a copy of his iPhoto library containing pictures he's asked me to adjust for him. His version of iPhoto is the 2009 release having come with his new MacBook Pro. My iPhoto is version 6. It won't open the library my friend sent. Is there anything I can do with my Aperture (current) to extract the photos from the disk my friend sent? Any other ideas?
    Thanks.
    Terry

Insert the Disc into your Mac. On it you will see an iPhoto Library icon. Right Click on it and go 'Show Package Contents'. A Finder window will open with the Library exposed.

  • Aperture and XServer, Library on a Network, when will Apple support it?

    Hi,
How can I put a Aperture Library on a XServer Networkdrive and access it with different useres. (not at the same time)
Are there any plans from Apple to make Aperture more capable to use XServer resources?
    JO

I would like to know the answer to this one too please.
I see Aperture as a great solution for my art department which has several workstations. Everyone needs access to a photo library and tools to work with editing images.
The fact that this is a one computer solution only is very frustrating because there are not really good solutions for photo library production work flows out there.
I suppose only official Apple people could give information about taking Aperture in this direction but please don't make me go to the rumor mills to find this information.

  • Aperture and iPhoto Library

    Hello,
I played with aperture @ the store. But i noticed i have to import pictures from the iPhoto library in the Aperture library. So i have the pictures twice on the disk. Isnt it possible to make Aperture use the iPhoto library?
    Thank you in advance
    Edgar

Well , it would be great to do someting like that. I
like aperture a lot, but then again, if i want to use
iWeb i need iPhoto again and same with the other
dedicated Apple programms. The integration is always
    handy.
Is there a special reason why apple didnt add this
support for sharing librarys? Because aperture can
import the raw foto from the camera?
Well, I think it's because they really wanted the ability to do a lot of complex editing without taking up extra room on the HD if they did not need to. In iPhoto all edits are stored directly in am image file whereas in Aperture they let you make a lot more editing choices and saving each one as an image (especially a non-JPG image) would just take up a huge amount of choice.
In the future I think they'll offer an API so other programs can see thumbnails from an Aperture library as well, and also export individual images from it even if they are just versions. At the moment things will just have to be a little more manual with Aperture for a while - though I think you can alleviate that by exporting a project when you are finished editing in Aperture - take the exported set of JPG's that you then store in an iPhoto library and use like you normally would with iPhoto. That would take up more space but the good news is that keywords you assign in Aperture are automatically picked up by iPhoto on import, so you can still search in iPhoto by keyword, and then you can make use of any images in iPhoto in exactly the same way as you normally would.
If you use the new ability of iPhoto to reference files in place you could create an export directory and replace the files there on the fly from Aperture if you re-edited them. You'd have to remove them first as Aperture will not overwrite files on export.

  • Workflow help needed, transitioning from iPhoto/iPhoto Library Manager

HI all, I am using latest Aperture, iPhoto, and 10.6.3 on lan connected macs and need some help setting up a workflow/libraries that represent some sanity amid the tens of thousands of photos that I have. Before getting Aperture3, i was using iPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager to work between an imac and an mbp; i would create a temp library to travel with on the mbp and then when I returned to the office I would merge the updated temp lib with the master lib housed on a huge external drive hanging off the imac. Using iPhoto Library Manager this is a lot of work and very slow indeed.
So with my new install of Aperture3, I am sure there is a better way, I just have not found a coherent tut that explains what I should be doing under these circumstances. I see that I can import iPhoto libraries, and that I can also use referenced files to get things into Aperture no matter where they are, or I can ??? Really confused on all the options.
Ideally, I think what we all want is a cloud like repository for all photos where users could check in and check out photos and have all the metadata preserved, but I guess they also want ice water down under, and haven't gotten that yet either.
Short of the above fairytale, what can I do? I do expect to have another mbp in the field soon, so that will be two machines/users that will need to pull things out of a master repository and check back in updated files as well as add new files to the collective.
    Thoughts? Thx.

    1) Import my one massive iPhoto Library into Aperture 3 - but do I use referenced or embedded options? Is there any advantage to leaving everything in iPhoto and just referencing from Aperture? Or do I get everything into Aperture and then just blow away iPhoto?
I see no reason to leave the files in iPhoto. If you agree you can do one of two things: either move them elsewhere and reference them or manage them in Aperture. Many folks recommend referencing them, but it's a choice only you can make.
I see no reason to continue with iPhoto.
    2) In Aperture, I can export a set of projects from the main repository into a "traveling library", say when I take the MBP out on assignment,
Correct: File -> Export Project as New Library
and then when I return, I just import that library back and the updates I made on the road will get integrated with the whole again? If so, that's worth the price of admission!
    Correct.

  • All my Aperture and iPhoto photos disappeared

I was getting ready to upload photos to mpix.  I was exporting photos tweaked in Aperture 3 from iPhoto.  Because the picture file to which I was exporting was full, I cancelled the export and deleted the photos in the picture file (about 790 photos).  These had been imported from iMac through drop box.  I then resumed the export of 45 photos from iPhoto and noticed some were gone.  Not sure of the sequence next, but checked Aperture and it seemed like all my projects and photos (about 9000-11,000) were gone.  Went to trash and moved dragged the photos out of the trash to the pictures drop down file in finder.  I then restarted the computer and tried to open iPhoto and it seemed there was no iPhoto library there at all.  Very strange.
I have not backed up my macbook pro for about a week.
Can I restore my aperture and iPhotos library?

I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and was able to recover all the photos and albums, but not the slideshows and a recent calendar.  I would like to understand what happened though and how to avoid it in the future. So here are the answers to your questions.
"When you say the "picture file" was full, to what are you referring?"  Several weeks ago, I had transfered a large volume of photos from my older iMac using the drop file with the computers networked. I did not delete them from the drop file after importing them into my IPhoto and/or Aperture libraries on my laptop.  After this import, neither my iPhoto nor my Aperture libraries on the laptop were comprised totally of these imported photos though.
"An external drive?"  Although I also pulled some of the photos I had imported earlier from an external hard drive, I did not delete the files or otherwise connect (through a firewire cable) to the hard drive when I deleted the photos to prepare to upload the ones for printing.
Over the weekend when I went to export photos to this same file I decided to delete the hundreds/thousand or so, that were still there, so that I wouldn't have to search through them all to upload them to an online printing service.  After I deleted the photos in the drop box file, when I went back to iPhoto I notice some photos were gone. Where they had been in the album I had created to print, were the empty dashed line outline box.  I don't remember if I restarted the computer then or after I checked Aperture, but at some point, thinking that might restore things, I restarted the computer.  After restarting, that's when iPhoto was just completely empty.  No photos at all.  When I checked Aperture it was the same - all the photos were gone.
"And when you say the photos are gone, when you open Aperture, does it look like a brand new library? No images, projects, albums, etc.?" Correct.
"Were the images in your Aperture library referenced from your iPhoto library?"  Some but not all.  Some were downloaded directly from my camera to Aperture; some were imported directly to Aperture from the drop box.  Some I did import first into iPhoto.  Also some of the photos originally imported to Aperture I then moved to iPhoto to make a calendar.
I am very concerned about this.  Is it a software defect?  Did I do something wrong?  Is there a more efficient and less unstable way to get some, but not all of the photos from my iMac onto the laptop?
    Thanks for your help.

  • How does iPhoto relate to iP Library Manager?

Once upon a time, I had  my libraries & albums set up just fine. (In iP4). Then, I upgraded from like Panther to Leopard, etc. I don't know what iP version I upgraded to doing that. Anyway, everything got fouled up & the only way I could access my libraries was using iP Library Manager (thank god!). All of my photos are still in the original iP main library. I'm confused about duplicaion of images between iP11 and iP Library Manager. Where, exactly, are the original files? What images are aliases, and which are not?
This is what my home folder looks like:
    (Folder) iPhoto My Vision (rebuilt)
    (Folder) iPhoto Library
    (Folder) iPhoto My Family (rebuilt)
When I want to add images, do I still do it in iPhoto11, where the other two Libraries do not appear? Exactly what is the relationship between iP & iP Library Manager?

You have three Libraries. iPhoto can open any of them by going
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Library Manager (apart from its many other excellent qualities) does the same job.
Library Manager holds no photos, no aliases or anything like that. It's just a tool to augment iPhoto.
So yes, the only way to add photos is to use iPhoto.
You can choose which Library to add the images to - iPhoto will only add images to the open one.
