Aperture 3 and Sinar STI raw files

I am trying to archive all my images in Aperture 3 and I have shot a huge amount as Sinar raw files (STI files), which Aperture 3 does not recognise. I can convert them to DNG files using Brambaer tools but Aperture still does not recognise these DNG files, where PS, Bridge, and Camera Raw can all read them? Is there a solution to enable me to archive them? please help.
thanks very much! cheers

The initial images you are seeing when you import are the imbedded JPG previews from the camera. As the RAW files are processed these previews are replaced by the processed RAW masters.
The JPG previews will have any camera settings set in the camera at the time of exposure applied to them by the camera. The RAW files will be just that, RAW. Apart from aperture, shutter speed and iso pretty much no other settings are applied an Aperture makes no changes, adjustments or edits to them.
As Mr Endo mentioned it is possible that you are applying an adjustment preset during import. In the import window on the right hand side where all the import bricks are might be one labeled *Adjustment Presets* If its there make sure it is set to none.
Also if this just recently happened have you changed anything on the system? Installed updates or new software.
Finally you could try going through the [Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805] just to rule out anything obvious.

Can anyone tell me if they know when apple will release an update for Aperture to support Nikon D200 raw files.

Let Apple know by sending a polite note to

  • Issues with Aperture 3.3.1 and LX-5 raw files

Having used my Lumix LX-5 raw files successfully with previous versions of Aperture, after loading some into V3.3.1 this morning, the initial preveiws were fine, and then I watched everyone change from a normal well exposed image to vertially all black with a very dark green colour cast!
No amount of adjustment via the inspector tools wil fix them.
Anyone got any suggestions or solutions?
    Thanks

    Two things to try:
Force the generation of new previews by holding down the option key while selecting "Update Preview"
If this only happened after you upgraded to 10.7.4 and worked well before, then register your camera with the lauch services database - see this post by Alan Roseman:This solved my questionRe: Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish, but read the follow up posts (the lsregister command) as well, on how it is supposed to work and how to correct the typos.
Added: if that does not help, try to remove the raw presets from ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/RawDecodePresets.plist

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.

I just bought the new PowerShot G1X. Aperture cannot read the raw files. Is there a fix for this? I am using Aperture 3.2.2 with a MacBook Pro.

I don't know -- sorry.  I don't think it matters -- once your camera is supported, you can easily force a re-processing of the Masters.  If you can import them as RAW+JPEG pairs, I would.  Set the JPG as Master until Aperture can convert the RAWs.
I don't use RAW+JPEG.  Can someone who does offer some suggestions  .

And _always_ back up your files.  In this case, if you have to, you'll be able to re-import them.

  • When will Aperture support Fujifilm Xpro1 raw files??

Does anybody knows when will Aperture support Fujifilm Xpro1 raw files?? It have been pendning for a while already, really hope there will be an update soon. Thanks.

I firmly disencourage people to purchase Aperture these days.
To everyone asking me for advise as a Pro photographer.
Apple attitude on this issue is of abandonement and ignorance of users needs.
Unfortunately, the feeling is that this is going to be the permanent standard.
They are not providing translations, not providing support to models such as X-Pro1 that has received inmediate reaction from major developers, neither do care for users that openly claim for RAW support for an extended model as X-10.
This is somehow another sign of apple arrogance in term of market predominant coompany.
If Apple do not begin to lose sales and an importan market share this is going to be worse and worse.
    Best way: Ignore Aperture.
Adobe is nowadays the ONLY option for photographers.
I don't like Lightroom so I must select my shots with Photo Mechanic, or Xnview and then go to photoshop.
    Sick of Apple.

  • Aperture doesn't read raw files

Aperture just stopped reading raw files. NOt all of them, just some. It says unsupported file format. Why is this happening, what can I do about it?

Aperture 2.0.1, camera Canon EOD 400D, OS 10.5.2.
The problem is it didn't happen before, it started happening today after I changed places of many files, exported the biggest part to the external drive and created new projects leaving some photos there and changing places. I don't know what I did wrong. It can't read only some files.
Same thing happened with Iphoto as well some time ago.

I can no longer import raw files from my Panasonic Lumix LX5 into Aperture 3.3.2 - raw files from my other Canon cameras are fine. Am still running Lion (10.7.4) - NOT Mountain Lion. Tried all available software updates - all up to date apparently but still no joy. OS X Lion shows the LX5 as a supported file format. I dont want to have to upgrade to Mountain Lion just to see if this solves the problem. Any ideas please.

Since when did this happen? Directly after you upgraded to Aperture 3.3.2?
If it happened directly after the upgrade the problem may be, that the raw support for your camera got lost. For some posters it helped to register the raw support again, see this post by Alan Roseman:
Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish
If this does not help, you may need to reinstall Lion to bring back the raw support.
But if the problem occured independent of a new installation, ypu may have a problem with your camera or the card you are using. Have you tried to use a different card or to reformat the card in the camera?

  • ACR and Nikon D800e Raw files

This discussion is actually a follow on to an earlier one where I thought the issue was resolved. I am using CS5 extended 64 bit with WIN 7 64bit and ACR version 6.7. I verified the ACR version checking for updates and was informed I am up to date. According to the ADOBE help site ACR v 6.7 is available to open Nikon D800e raw files. However when I try and open these raw files there is a message that the camera model is not supported. Any help on why the raw files cannot be opened with ACR 6.7 is appreciated.

Thanks Noel - after several hours of experimenting,  I found the issue. I use a stand a lone software, Nikon Transfer, to download images to the computer. The software allows me to preview/select,  rename, and make simultaneous copies for backup. This software has worked without issue, however when downloading images from the Nikon D800e, it does something to the raw files making them incompatible with ADOBE's ACR and even Nikon's ViewNX 2 software. Now here is the real curosity. When Nikon Transfer is initiated from within Nikon View2 software and not as a stand a lone, it works, and ADOBE ACR 6.7 can read the raw files. Again thanks for the help.

  • How can I import an Aperture Catalog into Lightroom and retain the RAW file as well as the files with the edits?

I have several catalogs in Aperture that I would like to import to Lightroom 5 and I want to retain the original RAW files as well as the files with the edits.  How can I do this?

Well, you can bring in the raw file (without edits), and you can bring in a rendered RGB file (e.g. jpeg or tiff) with edits baked in, but what you CAN'T do is bring in a raw file, with the non-destructive Aperture edits, and have Lr translate those Aperture edits into Lightroom edits.
Put another way: no raw converter/editor can understand the edits of any other raw converter/editor. So, you have to work with a rendered version, and/or re-edit from scratch in a new raw converter/editor.
PS - it would be feasible to write a rough translator which approximated raw edits in one world into edits in another, but such does not exist yet for Aperture -> Lightroom, that I know of.

  • Aperture 2 and Nikon D7000 RAW files. Do I need to upgrade to Aperture 3?

I currently have a Nikon D70 with a Nikon D7000 on its way. I want to know if Aperture 2 will process Nikon D7000 RAW files. I searched Apple support and these discussions. I only could find confirmation that Aperture 3 now handles it. But I have not found anything that confirms that Aperture 2 indeed did NOT get an update to handle the D7000 RAW files.
    Can someone confirm this?
    Thanks.

For future reference, all the cameras listed on the Aperture RAW Support web page that have the double asterisk "**" require Aperture 3.

  • Aperture 3 workflow with raw files edited in Capture NX2

I purchased Aperture as a data management tool. I used to use Expression Media for this purpose but it is not supported with snow leopard. I have many raw files which were edited in Capture NX2. The adjustments to these raw files are not reflected upon import in aperture. I understand this due to the non-destructive nature of Capture. I am trying to develop a new system to work through this. One idea is to create a duplicate of these adjusted files and save this as a tiff. Therefore my adjustments would be reflected in aperture. However, any metatdata added or other category information used would not be saved back to the raw file only the tiff. The double files create a headache upon import because I do not see an option to import only tiff's. They would have to be saved in another location.
I am sure that others have struggled through this and come up with a good system. I plan to continue using the Nikon programs as raw file converters and to do editing. Aperture's primary purpose is as a data management program.
    Any ideas and comments appreciated.
    Thanks,

The system you have is the one i use and several other photographers i know use, the NX2 edits are not imported into AP3 and never will be, nor for that matter in any program bar NX2 as the information is proprietary to Nikon.
So if needed (and its small now with AP3) i export master and use NX2 edit the file resave the NEF file and also a TIFF or JPEG and then re-import into a sub section marked NEF Edits.
