Aperture 3 and Time Machine don't work well together

I've noticed that my Time Machine (10.6.2) creates large backups (at least 250 MB) when I've only opened up Aperture 3. No retouching, no adding of photo's (of course), no changes. Just opening Aperture and a bit of scrolling.
Is there a way to prevent this? Is Time Machine perhaps backing up a cache? Where would I find this cache so I could perhaps exclude it from the TM?

the main idea of time machine is being able to restore your system to its latest state, or any state in time when it made a backup. in order to be able to do this, it just has to backup any file that's been changed, even if it's just a database having been touched by sqlite3. aperture 3 now saves the way you were viewing or where you were in a certain album or project, so when you come back to it, it takes you to exactly the same place. i guess it's necessary to write to a couple of database files to do that, even when you're just browsing. i kind of like this functionality.
just three quick comments:
-disk space is dirt cheap nowadays, so getting a big time machine backup disk shouldn't be any problem.
-since getting previous versions of your aperture library back is usually not very likely to happen, what i do from time to time is go in to time machine, select my aperture library and delete all copies of it. this takes quite some time, but on the next backup, you'll have your current library backed up and a time machine volume with more space.
-about it taking too long over wifi: backing up is a background process. does it slow down your other stuff while you're working? if so, let it run only when you're not at the computer, or hook up a big usb disk locally.

ARD and Time Machine don't play nice together

Hi there. Running 10.5.4 Server on a headless Mac Pro 8-core Xeon.
Thought i'd see how well time machine works as an incremental backup solution for my server. I use ARD to access the server. When i enter time machine using ARD i get some buggy glitchy version of time machine with no timeline or clear indication of where the controls are. Utterly unusable.
Any tips as to how to get these two magical pieces of software to play nice together?

I have a Dual G5 Desktop that I'm connecting to, and it has worked perfectly -- except tonight.
I added about 1.6GB of data, and Time Machine has been spinning away!
Has anyone suggested how to get around this?

External drive, Time machine don't work after upgrade

On Wed, Feb. 1 I connected my external drive, did a back-up on Time Machine, everything was fine. Then I download the most recent update for my MacBook Pro, OS X Lion 10.7.3 On Saturday, Feb. 4, I again connected my external drive to back-up and the icon for the external drive never showed up on the desktop and Time Machine did not automatically start. This morning I put this question out there and it was suggested that I reinstall OS X Lion 10.7.3 (Client Combo), which is what I did tonight when I got home. It didn't work. The external drive is running, I clicked on Time Machine in the utilities and it says it is backing up now, but the external drive still is not on the desk top and I have at least two years of back up documents and thousands of photos stored there. The external drive holds 1 terrabyte and I am very sure it is not full. Time Machine is not reading all the other back-ups I have done over the past year or so.
Please any other suggestions?

Others here wouldnt recommend it, but on a new OS install, since I have a giant pile of HD, ...i just grab another HD and create a new fresh Time Machine backup
after its complete, I take the original HD with the OLD backup and format/erase it.
Im a tad too lazy to wait, as you yourself mentioned, 1 hour for TM just to PREPARE to backup. Nope, no,...not gonna do it.
I updated 4 Macs to Mavericks and id rather make a wholly NEW Time Machine backup on another HD and erase the original.
Since I keep about 12+ redundant archives of my important data, I have no worry on earth of ever losing data.
Time machine is a backup, NOT an archive for vital data.

Time Capsule: Storage and Time Machine - Could this work?

my Macbook got stolen last Friday and thank God I had an external HD and Time Machine (TC)to keep all my data. Now here's the dilemma.
I bought time capsule (1TG) to use as a back up. I figure I can hide it somewhere in the house and not worried about having it disappeared. My laptop should be here tomorrow, so I want to get it right before do anything.
The present external HD is partitioned in 2: 250 Gb for time machine, and 250Gb for other storage (iMovie projects etc etc.)
Since I cannot partitioned TC, I was wondering if this would work.
When I get my laptop (Macbook - w. 320 Gb HD), I will do my re import for my data (appr.60Gb) from my first HD, then let time machine do its thing with TC. Now here's what I want to do. Take all the "storage" (appr. 200Gb), import it to the Macbook , use time machine to back it up. Then I delete the "storage" from my macbook, so it's not 3/4 full before I even install programs such as Aperture. If this works, that means I would have access to all my storage if I return to day 1 of time machine. Do you think it will work, or is time machine going to dump it after a certain amount of time?

You needn't go to all that trouble if you simple connect your old backup drive to the computer then exclude the TM backup partition from the TC in TM. TM will backup both your computer's drive and the storage partition on your other drive. The storage partition will be backed up separately on the TC from the computer's drive. If you copy that data to your computer's drive then backup entirely to the TC then delete the data from your computer's drive, the backup on your TC will eventually be deleted as well and you'll have no backup of the data on the external drive's storage partition.
A TM backup is not simply a substitute for storage space. Once you delete a file that has been backed up by TM eventually when TM does a weekly or monthly consolidation it will delete the file and all its copies from the backup.

Aperture Library and Time Machine back up

I just did my first Time Machine back-up on an external HD, currently have no more space on my Mac's HD.
Can I delete all of my Aperture Library to make room for new projects and rest assured that these are backed-up on my external HD?

To use your Time Machine backup with aperture, you need to restore the Aperture library from Time Machine.
A Time Machine backup is a great backup scheme and allows you to recover your files, if need be, but it is not an archive, that you can use instead of the backed-up files.
I just did my first Time Machine back-up on an external HD, currently have no more space on my Mac's HD.
Move your Aperture library to a second drive, before you delete the library from your Mac's HD. Otherwise you will not be able to useit with Aperture. Make sure the drive you use for your Aperture library and and other media is formatted for Mac, see this link: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
And include the new drive into your Time Machine backup, so it will be backed up as well.

Desktop SMS and Windows Mail don't work properly together

thought I would post there here as been having some issues with my Windows Mail but my desktop computer doesn't suffer same issues and on a Vista forum where I posted my problem a couple of very helpful told me who to try solving the issues.
One of them suddenly realised I'd said my laptop was a Toshiba and apparently the Desktop SMS and Windows Mail just don't work properly together so the person suggested unless I use it to uninstall it apparently amongst the technically trained its known that these two programs don't like each other and would explain why my desktop doesn't have the issue but laptop does.
After resetting the Windows Mail (tutorial on a vista site http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/) Touch wood don't be put off by vistax64 as site does both 32 and 64 and followed Brink's excellent resetting Windows Mail (didn't restore any mail) and then uninstalled Desktop SMS and touch wood no more mail issues as has been giving me problems virtually daily with marking draft emails as read/sent.
So had to click on forward then delete those bits and finish email to send it and touch wood since doing these two things as soon as send an email to draft or outbox get the number of emails in the brackets whereas before this wouldn't happen unless I closed the program then reopened it.
Hoping these solutions have fixed my problem and wanted to share it with anybody else who wants to read this thread and would recommend the Vista 64 site as they're all really helpful over there and speak in non technical terms for those of us not technically trained.

I have marked this as answered as it was more a post to help others who may have experienced the same problem I did and didn't get a reply or just didn't know that this program could be the reason their Windows Mail has issues that can't seem to be resolved any other way apart from ignore them and hope they don't get worse.

Managed Clients and Time Machine Quota Not Working

We operate a Mac OS X 10.6.4 Server with 10.6.4 Clients; the clients are all bound to the OpenDirectory and all the laptops should be backed up using TimeMachine Server. Therefore we created a computer group which contains all the client machine records of the laptops and defined managed TimeMachine preferences for this computer group:
- the TimeMachine server URL: afp://server.domain.tld/TimeMachine/
- „startup volume only“, „skip system files“ and „back up automatically“ are enabled.
- and a backup limit of 50 GB is set.
If I run „mcxquery“ on the laptops, the settings are displayed. And the TimeMachine backup works.
But … but the size limit of 50 GB isn’t respected, all client images grow „infinitely“.

I presume the bought a time machine means a time capsule.
How did you migrate the Time Machine files?
From where? A Time Capsule or external drive?
It is difficult to get TM working with Yosemite.. since it doesn't work after the upgrade on the old TM backup.. it will not work on the migrated files either.
You simply start a new backup and store the old backups for a few months until you are ready to dump them.

However it is just unlikely to work.. TM in Yosemite is very different. Broken even.
I also strongly recommend people to use Carbon Copy Cloner or some other 3rd party backup until Apple get the bugs fixed. And after several months.. they are still rampant.

Mountain Lion and Time Machine does not work

After Mountain Lion upgrade I was able to backup once using Time Machine. Now TM suggest that I need 42 TB for my backup?!? I have 1TB hard disk on my Mac which has about 600GB of data on it. Time machine prepares the backup for around 10 minutes and then gives an error that my backup disk is too small (1.5TB) because the size of the backup would be 42TB. :-o I have booted my Mac, repaired permissions and searched for internet for tips. However, no luck until now. Any suggestions what could work?

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.

Upgrade to lion and time machine does not work

I upgraded to Lion and my WD Live network drive that I always used for wireless time machine back ups no longer works. I get the following error:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.
What can I do to fix this?

HT6030 Mavericks 10.9.1 and Gmail still don't play well together: help!

I have 4 gmail acounts and Mavericks and iOS 7 still don't get along despite having the latest versions of everything.
Mail deleted one place still shows up in another.
Counts are totally wrong between my MacAir my iMac and my iPad and iPhone and appear totally random.
At times mail won't show up on the iMac or MacAir for days or even weeks when there may be hundreds of messages that show up in my web browser and sometimes on the iPhone and iPad, but it seems totally arbitrary and to make no sense when it does one thing or the other.
I have no custom settings on gmail, nothing strange, just use it in the most basic ways there are.
Anyone else still having this problem and what to do about it? It is no better from 10.9 to 10.9.1, and has been causing problems since the moment Mavericks was installed.
Come on, Apple! You have a $100 billion in the back: hire people who can code a mail program or talk with the people who coded Mail for Mountain Lion, as it worked just fine.

10.8 worked well with my Mac Mini (2009) connected to IOGEAR KVM model GCS1108. My mouse is from Redmond and the keyboard is a Goldtouch.
Mavericks has a problem with my KVM switch as well. It seems to be a USB problem.
Case 1: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch -- mini DVI port to DVI. If the KVM USB cable (known good) is connected, the Mini chimes at boot but no grey Apple logo appears. LCD remains blank white. Boot does not progress.
Case 2: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch, as before. If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected, the Mini chimes at boot, the grey logo appears, and boot proceeds normally. Video is fine. I then connect the KVM USB cable to the Mini and use keyboard and mouse. KVM switching works as expected.
If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected but a keyboard and mouse are connected directly to the Mini, the boot sequence is normal. Video works.
The problem is not the hardware, all of which worked well with 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I would downgrade if Apple made 10.8 available from the App Store.

ICloud Mail & Contacts don't work well together?

I have iCloud activated for Mail and Contacts. Now, when in Mail and I try to address an email, the address book shows up but none of the sub address books show up. How do I get them populated? Do I have to go back to syncing with MobileMe?

this is not a bug - but you're right its a serious problem.
The same happens on Linux/NVidia too igf I force antialiasing and use the OGL pipeline.
This happens because java tries to accerlate some graphic opeerations with DirectX or OpenGL and it simply wants the graphic-card to render the stuff it sends the graphic card.
However with AA turned on you graphic card tries to optimize the data coming from java which is nonsence since the AA was designed for games.
So basically its neither java's fault nore the dirvers one.
Both work as expected - but not well together. I think driver-manufactureres should provide a common API for telling the driver that this and that application does NOT want to be AA'ed even if its forced.
Till now there's nothing SUN could do about this issue...

I guess there'll be a new 'vault' mechanism, as TM backs up your hard drive and vaults typically reside on another drive. whether or not TM can work with other drive I don't know.
Perhaps vaults will remain largely unchanged and be used for recovering entire projects or libraries, and TM will allow you to go back through previous version of the current file, or restore individual images that you may have deleted.

Chats in Tiger, between Comcast and Time Warner don't work

My iChat worked when I was in 10.3.9 and iChat 2, with someone operating 10.4.10 and iChat 3. Since I upgraded to 10.4.10 and iChat 3, our chats get the "bandwidth" errors, even though I've set those in QT. My isp is Comcast. Their isp is TimeWarner.
The only parameter I can see that has changed, is my upgrade in OS/iChat. All equipment and software on their end is the same. All equipment on my end is the same.
I have a Scientific-Atlantic modem and a Linksys WRT54G router. I can chat with the test sites fine. My actual upload speeds are around 280 KBps according to speedtest.net. I don't see any options on the router for opening ports, only port forwarding. I'm a little confused about what to set for the static ip address. Is that the number it says in the Network pane for IPAddress:, the one under Configure IPv4 using DHCP.

Realistically this can be several things.
First of all if they both use a device in which they have to use Port Forwarding then it is possible that each end does not like the way the other does NAT (Network Address Translation).
The modem or routing device adds info about how the packets coming back should be addressed to get to the right computer.
There are about 6 main ways of doing his and not all "Play Nicely together" all the time.
Secondly it can be the way Comcast or in this case Roar Runner stream their Data to try and make the whole network the run effective.
If one is on Tiger and one on Leopard there is a new issue (Potentially).
On some devices Port Forwarding is the only choice.
For Tiger users iChat 3 needs 29 ports plus two setting on some for UDP and TCP Protocol.
On those devices that need one port at a time entered this can be 31 entries.
They can also have a limited table to enter them into.
If they want to do Bonjour, Jabber and AV chats they may not be able to enter all the ports in.
So they are likely to do 5190 (twice), 5297, 5298 (twice), 5353, 5220, 5222, 5223 to text chat on AIM, Bonjour and Jabber and then 5060, 5678 to Start the AV chats and as many of 16384-16403 (the Group of 20) as they can fit in.
iChat 3 uses the lower port 4 at a time for a 1-1 chat in Video or Audio only so just the lowest 4 of the Group of 20 may be all they have added.
iChat 4 on the other hand uses a group of 10 (16393-16402) but starts at the highest. It does the same bit as 5060 and the 4 ports on one single port.
It also starts at the top of this group. If it can not connect on this port it drops down one port at a time until it is successful. (or tries a random port as a last ditch attempt.
As you can see in these circumstances there is potentially a gap in ports.
I can not see this effecting many people but it is something to be aware of.
Sometimes talking to the ISP can improve thing even when the deny anything they are doing is going to effect iChat.
I have heard of some Comcast customers rebooting their Modem.
This seems to keep a more stable high Connection speed for longer for some reason. (my favourite fantasy on that is that the Comcast server regards them as a new Customer and does not introduce the Bandwidth/data stream management til later).
Basically try every speed setting in the iChat> Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down to find if anything works.

2 mac with leopard, 1 ethernet Hard drive and Time machine : Does it work ?

I have 2 Imac with leopard connected by wireless to my local network (Linksys routeur).
I want to buy a ethernet 500Go drive to do my backup. This drive will be connected to the routeur with a cable.
Will I able to use TM with this configuration ?
If case of big problem, could I restore my data ?
Sorry if this question is already posted, I didn't find same case.

Well, currently Apple doesn't support using a NAS drive.
The official line is that the hard drive be connected to the client Mac or anther Mac running Leopard. Some people have found ways to make a NAS work, but whether this works in the long run (i.e. reliable) is an open question.
