Aperture 3   AppleTV   Eye-Fi Integration

I'm wanting to understand if it would be possible to shoot remotely tethered with an Eye-Fi card using Aperture's hot folders.  Where it gets tricky is that I would like to have this folder shared to my AppleTV.
Here's what I need to work:
I need to be able to walk around a party and shoot JPEG+RAW files from my Nikon D90.  I would like to transmit the JPEG (or JPEG+RAW) files to my laptop running Aperture 3.  Then I need Aperture to import the files automatically as they are being shot.  Then at the same time, I need my AppleTV to play a slide show that is updated as the pictures get imported.
I'm not dead-set on this work flow, so I'm open to suggestions.  I posted this to Aperture 3 forum because I know the hot folders are supposed to work with the Eye-Fi.
Anyone tried this before?   Thx.

Not 100% about this solution but from what I've read this could be one solution if it's more important to show the images on TV more immediately.
1. Eye-Fi cards all now have direct mode which enables them to automatically transmit jpeg (Connect X2) and jpeg / RAW (Pro X2).
2. If you had a Nikon D7000 with dual card slots, you could save a RAW file to one card for importing into Aperture later and save a jpeg to the Eye-Fi card slot for wireless distribution.
3. You can wirelessly send the jpegs to an iPad2 from the Eye-Fi card using Direct Mode.
4. With an iPad2 you can mirror the iPad's screen onto an Apple TV (the small black ones) and therefore as soon as the jpeg is sent to your iPad it can be viewed instantly and automatically on your Apple TV.
5. This should also work for jpegs if you have a D90 but I'm not too sure about what happens if you shoot RAW and jpeg on the D90.
It's a possible solution and food for thought anyway...

  • Aperture, MobileMe, AppleTV...Which Forum?

Hopefully this forum will work for me...
Anyone else having issues with Aperture images published to MobileMe that don't show up on AppleTV? Or at least gives you trouble on AppleTV?
First of all the MobileMe albums don't show up UNLESS I publish an image via iPhoto. It's like iPhoto "pushes" the Aperture images through. When I publish one photo via iPhoto, my Aperture/MobileMe albums show up. Un-publish the iPhoto image and the Aperture albums disappear from AppleTV.
THEN..... when I get the Aperture/MobileMe albums to show up (because I published one from iPhoto), AppleTV won't allow me to view them because it keeps telling me the login-in formation is incorrect--but it's not. I have the albums protected and locked on MobileMe and that's why I have to enter it on AppleTV. Whatever, I cannot view my MobileMe albums on AppleTV at all, no matter what I do. I will also post to the other forums, but I wanted to see if anyone here is familiar with this issue.
I hope this makes sense. Any help, anyone?

  • Aperture and Red Eye Removal

Is there a way to reduce the size of the white eye after removing red eye from one's photos?  Aperture does a good job of removing the red eye area but leaves a rather large white shining ring for the iris in my photos.  How do I reduce the size of the iris?

The Radius is in pixels.  3 is very very very small.  The "Red Eye target overlay" -- that's the official name -- should cover the entire iris, and all of the red you wish to remove (desaturate) should be within the yellow circle.
    Is that what you're doing?
It is often helpful to zoom in to the eyes when using the Red Eye tool.
As a reference, full directions are in the User Manual.

  • Cannot get Aperture to set up Flickr integration

I've just recent bought Aperture and set up a Flickr account. In Aperture, when I click on the Flickr button, or try to add Flickr integration in the preferences, it tells me that I have to allow Aperture to access my Flickr account to set things up. When I click Set Up, it takes me to the Flickr login screen, and I sign in and that's it, nothing happens. It never does anything other than this and I've searched for answers, but can't find any. Anyone? Thanks.

    Sculley,
You have to set up your Flickr account to accept requests (and pictures) from Aperture. After you sign in to FLickr, you should see a screen that asks you to authorize Aperture to access your FLickr account. It won't be the normal photostream screen.
I did not set up my Flickr access the way you did (by clicking the Flickr button first), so I'm not sure what went wrong there for you.
Try setting up your Flickr account by using the "Web" tab of the Preferences and hit the "+" button to connect to Flickr.

  • AppleTV with Car integration

I was running this idea by a couple buddies and they thought it was a pretty good idea. Would there be a way to integrate and AppleTV into a car and run it like a typical DVD system. It would allow you to sync movies, music, photos to the ATV while in your garage. You could create video play lists so you don't have to change disks. And while we are at it we can integrate GPS and touch screen (similar to iPhone and touch).
I'm sure this is being done somewhere, but wouldn't it be sweet. Thoughts?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Your most difficult task would be to find a display which matched the outputs from the tv, most that I'm aware of use composite (but things might be different here in the UK). Other than that you would need to install an inverter that would supply you with 48 Watts or more, I'd assume you could find a display that would run from your vehicles DC supply.

  • Aperture & Iphoto & Iphone & Appletv

hello, I'd like to use only aperture and not iphoto. Is it possible? But how I can see photos on appletv and on iphone without syncronizinig with aperture?

I agree. Syncing Aperture to AppleTV works like a charm and you can set up some real sweet smartfolders to do so. Personally, I select all two star images and above and have them colour adjusted, cropped and sized to 16:9 1080 and be ready for syncing by iTunes.
My image library is now front and center on the big screen TV an being enjoyed by the whole family.
When it comes to syncing, I have two smartfolders called "Best new, iPhone" and "Best old, iPhone". That way I can control how many images are stransferred and how they look.
This technology is really great and has put new life into our photo collection.

  • Free Eye-fi to Aperture solution...finally

I searched and searched for something like this for weeks.
You take a pic and it beams immediately into Aperture, in its own project labeled by date. It's like magic.
It's so much better than the much more complicated tethered setup, (which requires you to run a script, create a new project, blah blah...)
Aperture Folder Checker is free, it's simple, and it works.
    http://www.oblonczek.net/afc/
Note: I am in no way connected to the maker of this app...the reason I'm posting this is that it seems that lots of Aperture useres with Eye-fi are looking for something like this. I have contacted Eye-fi to tell them about it but so far they have posted nothing.
    Enjoy!

    Hi there!
Thanks! I re-checked my Eye-fi card and I had changed the folder the photos were sent to when I updated the firmware so Aperture was looking in the wrong folder. I think I've got it fixed!! It does tend to be 'glitchy' so hopefully it'll keep working!

  • Best practice for viewing short home videos on AppleTV?

Please help me find a simple way to view short home videos taken on a digital video camera, photo camera or cell phone on my Apple TV.
I've been using AppleTV to showcase my photos for a couple months now, but all the short little videos I take along the way have been gathering dust in a general folder. None of them are significant enough to warrant building a full on iMovie, and all are in Nikon's AVI format. To date I have about 300 of them, hoping that one day they won't just gather dust.
As I understand it these are the recommended steps that Apple encourages:
    1) Import movies from camera onto hard disk (Aperture prompts me to do this when I import photos)
    2) Import all movies into iMovie
    3) Export for AppleTV (creating new projects for each video, individually!)
    4) Import into iTunes
    5) Sync with AppleTV
This is awful. For comparison, here is my current workflow for photos to get them to show on AppleTV...
    1) Import photos into Aperture.
Assuming iTunes is already running (and it mostly is), there's not even a step two. iTunes is set up to sync a "Recent Import" smart album from Aperture to AppleTV so everything else is behind the scenes. A few seconds after importing I'm viewing new photos on my AppleTV.
Since AppleTV is actually built for video, I'm hoping for a revised workflow that can showcase my movies as quickly as it does photos.
I'm currently not running a hacked version of the AppleTV OS, but would consider it if it simplifies the process. Automator workflows, Finder Folder Actions, and AppleScripts are also fair game.

Thanks pvonk. I get that video is more complex than photos, but Apple still wrote its photo applications to accept all sorts of photo file types (even the many proprietary RAW formats). So I don't think it's crazy to question why this workflow isn't easier for video. Especially when Apple is the biggest champion of integrated video solutions.
Right now, here's my best guess at a workable solution. Care to weigh in?
    Setup:
    1) Attach a folder action to a folder (let's say ~/Movies/Imported/)
    2) Folder-Action runs shell script that converts videos to mp4 via HandBrake's command line tool
    3) Shell script triggers another folder action upon HandBrake completion to pushes the completed file to a new folder (let's say ~/Movies/Converted/)
    4) "Converted" folder action to import to iTunes (perhaps Applescript? Automator?)
~ if one could automatically add a meta tag (let's say "AppleTV") they could be added to a smart album on iTunes that is set up to sync with AppleTV
    *Workflow after Setup:*
    1) Import all movies to a folder (~/Movies/Imported/)
Does this sound about right? My shell scripting skills are less than adequate for this, so if there is a way to accomplish this with AppleScript, that'd be ideal.
Any other suggestions to simplify the workflow? The setup here still seems overly complex for a normal user. I can't imagine the folks at Apple really excited about the hurdles involved in this either, so I hope that they're working out a solution already.

  • Aperture to apple tv

I photograph in raw format and would like to show the pictures through my Apple TV. Does anyone know of a convenient way to convert raw images to jpeg images within aperture so i needn't export them to the desktop and then reimporting them back into aperture. Thanks

You probably already have the previews generated. Unless you've taken an action to turn it off. The default is previews generated. And you do not want to manually move the previews - which is inside of your Aperture Library.
There is nothing to do, per sa, to share with iLife programs. If you open iPhoto, for an example, there should be, under "File", show Aperture Library. It will bring up all of your projects/albums/smart albums, as you have them in Aperture, and you can select any to see the images in your Ap Lib. If not, start Aperture, goto the menue "Aperture>Preferences" and look at the bottom part of the Preference pane and you will see the preview settings, including an option to share with iLife.
The same Ap Lib will show up in iTunes, when you are selecting what to do with AppleTV.
You can always create a smart folder(s) in Aperture for AppleTV (I did for iPhone) or simpley select one of he existing albums.
Not as complicated as might sounds. Just try it and see...
    Cheers

  • Import book from iPhoto into aperture

hi, i would like to create a book in iPhoto and then tweak it in aperture.
i want to do this because
A: aperture doesn't offer the same themes...(if i could share/import the theme then that would also solve the problem).
B: iphoto doesn't have the same flexibility for editing layout & text.
can i somehow import a book? or maybe generate a PDF from iPhoto and import that? or generate JPegs of final pages....or...?
i must be missing something here as this seems like a straightforward operation...i've just started using aperture (demo) and love the integration features it has so far, but this has me stumped.
    thanks.

    Not possible, I'm afraid.

  • Moving to Aperture 3 from Lightroom 3

Do I understand correctly that bringing images into Aperture 3 from Lightroom 3 will cost me the adjustments I've made in Lightroom?
If that's the case, what's the best strategy for proceeding? Stay in Lightroom?

    Alexander CK wrote:
Here's a compromise I've worked out. In Lightroom, export your images (maybe only those that have adjustments) to high-quality JPEG, in the same folder as the masters. Also make sure all metadata is kept in sidecar XML files.
Then, import the folders as projects into Aperture, and choose to import raw+jpeg, with jpeg as the master by default.
That way, you have the Lightroom rendition (with all adjustments) available, though of course you can no longer incrementally tweak the adjustments. OTOH, if you want to mess with adjustments, you can always go back to the RAW file on a case-by-case basis (and you do have the jpeg sitting around as a "guide").
Thanks, that sounds like a plan worth trying.
I am torn; I love the editing and image quality in LR (that, and the LR betas have been more stable than Aperture's initial releases), but LR's DAM is quite lacking --- in particular, transparently relocating selected images (e.g., all older images with ratings < 5) is impossible; LR's project hierarchy always has to match the physical volume/folder organization on the disk. This is quite lame once you acquire enough images. Sigh.
Interesting. I agree that editing and image quality is very good in Lr; I haven't tried Aperture 3, though I was an Aperture 2 user before moving to Lightroom. But I think that Lr's DAM aspect is clearly superior to Aperture and I am leery about moving back to Aperture primarily for that reason. I just much prefer the Aperture interface, and its beautiful integration with OS X, iPhone, iPad, etc.
    Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Aperture and iphoto together

I have all of my photos on an external hard drive and linked with iphoto as of now. I have now imported my iphoto library into aperture. Not to sure if that was the correct thing to do? Now I want to use aperture to do my Metadata and adjustments on my photos...? Will these adjustments and metadata I am adding show up in iphoto as well? I have noticed when I try Delete Master Image and All Versions in Aperture I still see the photos in iphoto?
    Appreciate your input everyone
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Just for sharing my experiences:
In view of nice Face/Place features, Iphoto 09 is my main application (i.e. all photos are imported first to iphoto). Then with the understanding that Aperture 2 is now better integrated with iphoto and with much powerful editing features, I bought Aperture 2 recently. Then I tried to test export a dozen photos from iphoto to Aperture 2 and found that all information on the date photos were taken had been reset to 01/01/2001 (meaning that one cannot risk exporting all photos with date information lost totally). Then when I figured if Iphoto 09 and Aperture 2 are really well integrated, I could use Aperture 2 as main application instead. Then I test exported some photos from Aperture 2 to Iphoto and found that all photo sizes were trimmed down to below 1MB (even all settings were adjusted to original Jpeg size).
Now since both applications display imperfect integration performance I have to use Iphoto 09 as main application with Aperture 2 used only occasionally for editing specific photos.
Appreciate views to overcome these issues.

  • Camera RAW and iPhoto integration

    >Does anyone have a solution?
I need this for teaching purposes.
    I run Leopard v10.5.6; iPhoto '08; PSE 6 (Mac) with ACR 5.2.
By the way, I also run CS4 and I can do the above with CS4 easily, by setting the preferences in
    CS4.
    >iBobK

    >But, why on Earth would iPhoto be remotely involved? Personally I don't even know anybody >who uses iPhoto, and, yes, I'm a Mac user.
I use iPhoto for my >25,000 photo library/organization as well as sharing photo libraries with others on my home network. I use it just about every day. It is also my "gateway" to Photoshop CS3. I find a photo I want to edit/add to a collage/etc. and use iPhoto to launch Photoshop CS3. In addition, its seamless integration with the other iLife tools is perfect for what I need. I even use it with Apple's Aperture.
    >There's no "integration" of iPhoto with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
Not sure which version you're using, but iPhoto 8 works just fine with both Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements 6. For the most part that is how I start either app. In fact, with your instructions above, I am now able to open JPGs with Adobe Camera Raw. I only start Photoshop or Photoshop Elements if I am starting something from scratch.
    >All those applications or utilities you mention in #7 have nothing to do with Photoshop or its functions. They are irrelevant in this context.
Actually #7, it is very relevant. That is what I mean by seamless integration with the other iLife tools. The only ones listed in #7 that I haven't used is iTunes and Garage Band. All of the others I have used.
    Hope this answers/addresses your question/comments.

  • Lightroom vs. other options (Aperture? what else?)

I'd hate to make just a really vague topic, but I'm curious what others are using for their stills workflow.  I use Lightroom, and so do most others I know, but I want to make sure I'm not in an echo chamber and not even aware of what I'm missing.
My workflow is entirely Lightroom-based: from import, sorting, basic editing, more advanced editing with Photoshop if necessary (but LR integrates this very seemlessly), and then jpg export (I currently don't do prints or web galleries, just delivery to clients via Dropbox).
Thoughts? What are the advantages of other options out there?

Aperture is only available for the Mac -- since it's Apple software.
Some time back... in Apple's way of doing things, they recognized that Photoshop -- though quite powerful -- wasn't very practical for everyday use nor did it have any management capabilities.  They recognized that a typical photographer probably shoots a large number of images which are all related -- they belong to the same event or project, etc.  They also recognized that if you shoot enough, you fill up your hard drive and need a way to deal with offline storage so that you can archive the shots you aren't working with NOW and yet not lose track of the fact that you have them.  They also recognized that 98% of the time, you're "adjusting" images and not doing wholesale edits (you're not creating composite images, etc.)  Lastly... they realized that the Photoshop editing process is not protective of the original image and is also QUITE bulky (files really have a filespace "bloat" problem becasue of the nature of the "layer" system.)
So they created Aperture -- which deal with all of this.
Adobe... feeling threatened by this new product (and rightly so) responded by creating Lightroom -- more or less a shameless rip-off of Aperture.
The two are roughly equal in terms of what they can do.
I have long felt that Adobe is exceptionally proud of they software and thing it should be priced as if they were selling gold bars.  When Aperture debuted... it was $200.  When Lightroom debuted it was $300.
Lightroom is available on both Windows and Mac.  Aperture is only available on Mac.
Recently I've noticed Apple seems to be drastically lowering the cost of software -- if not giving it away for free.  And further... they seem to consider everything to be a "family pack" in that once you buy something from the App Store you are allowed to install it on every computer YOU legitimately own.  Adobe is still in the "one computer" world.
Aperture is now $79.  Lightroom is $149.
I tried Lightroom in it's pre 1.0 beta days but even after release and watching several revisions, it was too much like Aperture (I suppose that's a good thing) so I saw little value in swtiching.  It doesn't work with Photoshop any better than Aperture does.
I use a lot of tools on my Mac and I find that Aperture (not-surprisingly) has better integration with everything else on the Mac.
As such... I pretty much treat this like a Coke / Pepsi thing and don't feel that one of them is truly "better" than the other and it's more a matter of personal taste.

  • Aperture and Apple TV

I currently stream content from itunes to ATV and use iPhoto. I am considering purchasing Aperture. Will I be able to stream photos from Aperture to ATV or will I have to put them in iPhoto first?

I have been using Aperture with AppleTV. It is nice to be able to show off your photos in the living room on a big screen HDTV instead of having to huddle around the computer in the den. The only downside I can tell you is that AppleTV ignores any folder/project structure you set up and brings in each album separately and in no particular order. Also, whenever you add a new album or project it goes to the bottom of the list. All the effort of organizing my thousands upon thousands of photos was all for naught. It would be nice if AppleTV would recognize the database structure of Aperture the same way it does iTunes.
