Aperture 3 does not recognize duplicates on Import

I was running an up to date version of Aperture 2 on all three of my machines. I upgraded the 17 MBP to Aperture 3. All updates applied, seems to function normally. I exported versions from an Aperture 2 machine in an attempt to consolidate my libraries. No file names had been changed. "Do not import duplicates" was selected. Aperture 3 wanted to import all files even though some were already present. I went back exported masters not versions, still saw all files being available for import.
Here is what the AP3 manual says:
"When you import images, Aperture automatically checks to see if any of the images are duplicates of previously imported images. Aperture checks the filename of the master to determine if an image is a duplicate of one in the library. Select the “Do not import duplicates” checkbox to prevent Aperture from importing duplicates. If this checkbox is unselected, Aperture imports all images, even if they are duplicates, and creates a new master with a different name for each duplicate. Aperture never overwrites or replaces a master that has already been imported."
So the question is, was the "filename" the same in AP2 and AP3. The Finder thinks that the picture file exported from AP2 is exactly the same as the picture file exported from AP3.
Therefore AP3 is not correctly identifying duplicates.

Is your Library on a FAT32 drive or network share?
It needs to be on an HFS+ drive, and should be locally mounted. Putting the library on a network is not a good idea, as the library needs lots of small block random read/write speed and doing this over TCPI/IP is slow.
However, you should be able to put the RAW referenced files on a network volume, and keep the library local.

  • Help Verify: Aperture 3 does not regenerate thumbnails at Import screen

Before I consider this to be a bug, can someone else help me verify that Aperture 3 will not regenerate thumbnails at the import screen? Basically, if you have the thumbnail slider middle-ish then slide toward larger thumbnails, Aperture just expands the existing thumbnail, resulting in pixellated thumbnails.
Surprising behavior, to say the least, especially since Lightroom has had this ability since 1.0 beta.

Sorry that was not helpful. I am using the trial version only and HELP states 'Aperture provides a few methods for reconstituting your Aperture library and the file relationships within it.'
To repair or rebuild your Aperture library : - following by empty white space.
Having looked through Aperture Commands under the Aperture Menu I cannot find any likely entry other than I have already mentioned.
    Good luck.

  • Aperture 3 does not detect duplicate files on import

On import, AP3 still shows the same files I'm importing from my compact flash card that have already been imported. Raw files are coming from a Nikon D70. This also happens when I try to import photos from an SDHC card coming off from a Canon HFS10 camcorder.
The check mark to "not import duplicate" is checked, yet imported files still show up. I had this same problem before with Aperture 2 and I had to revert back to an older version of CameraRaw -- I believe 2.2 -- to fix the problem.
    Need help please.
    Thanks.

  • Why would Aperture NOT recognize duplicates?

Why would Aperture NOT recognize duplicates when importing?
It was working a few imports ago.

I should explain the situation better. I was pinched for time yesterday.
I was importing images to build a new Aperture Library. The images are in folders about 100 each. I had already imported the images from 12 of these folders. Part of the reason for building a new Library was to assign 'Keywords' to the greatest extent possible. Since the images encompass subjects like family, travel, and friends I was importing in groups with like keywords. This meant I was picking through the images in the folder looking for like subjects and then importing them. I would then go to the next group. Each time I was counting on Aperture to show me only those images which I had not Keyworded and had not been imported.
As I said, after doing this with about 12 folders (working well I might add) I keyworded and imported about 10 images from the next folder. When I went back to the folder to import more the previously imported 10 images showed up as available for import. (do not import duplicates was still checked as before). I could go to the project in Aperture and show that those 10 images had, in fact, been imported yet the import window kept showing those 10 images as available for import.
Thus, my frustration and the reason for the question above.
I tried quitting and restarting Aperture a few times. I tried 'Repair the Database' a couple of times with no change in Aperture 'don't import duplicates' behavior. I think the thing that finally changed things and Aperture again started to recognize files which had been previously imported as duplicates was running 'Rebuild the Database'.
But, the question remains, why did Aperture suddenly begin forgetting previously imported files and continue showing them as available for import in the import window?

  • Aperture does not recognize that there are images to be imported on an SD card. My workaround is to copy the images from the ST card to a folder and then import the images from the folder. Aperture also imports incredibly slowly after the update to 3.4

Check your Import settings in the Import Panel, i.e. all that might exclude the image type you want to import:
If you did not exclude any file types, and still Aperture will not import, remove your ImageCapture preferences fro your user library:
To remove the image capture preferences:
If Aperture is running, quit Aperture,  and log off and on again.
Open your user library from the Finder's Go menu: Hit Command Shift G (⌘⇧G) and then type in: ~/Library/Preferences/  then hit return.
In the window that opens remove "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist"
and look into the subfolder "ByHost": if there are files named com.apple.ImageCapture  something .plist  remove them too.
    then try again.
And if that still does not help, remove the Aperture preferences as well:
    ~/Library/Preferences/aperture.plist
    Regards
    Léonie
P.S. in MacOS Lion and later the user library ~/Library is hidden by default.
You can reveal it also  from the Finder's "Go" menu:
Finder > Go,   then hold down the options ⌥ key, until the Library appears in the drop-down menu, select it and open the Library folder. Then go to the "Preferences".

  • Importer does not recognize already imported photos

    Hello,
I have a really annoying problem with Aperture 3.0.3. The importer does not recognize already imported photos and wants to import them again and again. This is true for photos from my iPhoneand also for photos from my Nikon. If I enable "Do not import duplicates" then some photos vanish from the importer, when I the iPhone view is open. In the Nikon view not even one photo is recognized as already imported.
Also very strange is that when I have the iPhone (iOS 4.1 installed) attached to the Mac, Aperture opens the importer automatically and shows all photos correctly - but strangely, both iMac CPUs are at 100% until I click either "Cancel" or "Start import" or I disconnect the iPhone.
I tried the following without success:
    - Correct permissions on media library
    - Repair media library
    - Rebuild media library
Imports from my iPhone last very long and seem to hang most of the time. I have to kill Aperture to make it work again all the time.
To me, it looks like there is something really messed up at the base of this program.
I have about 20000 files in my library - face recognition is not turned off - most of the preferences are at their default, I think. Did not play around very much.
Does anybody know what to do? I don't want to lose all my Projects (sorted all pictures into their own projects). But I want to work with Aperture again. When its working, it's a great tool.
    Regards
    Alex

I've had the same problem. For some things, like videos and photos on my iPhone, I've found as many as 5 copies of the images despite keeping the 'do not import duplicates' checked.
I've also found a bug with the import function, where if I'm importing from folders on my hard drive, sometimes it finds no images at all (even if they don't exist in my library). Simply cancelling and going back into import and the miraculously appear (including images that have already been imported despite having 'do not import duplicates' checked.).
I've been going through my library deleting all the duplicates, and managed to free about 10GB of space.
Having moved from Lightroom the 'technical side' of Aperture seems very antiquated. For example, if I remove a duplicate video - then try clicking on that video in Aperture, it literally takes about 10-15 minutes of spinning disc before Aperture becomes responsive. It also often hangs up on the 'updating previews' when I quit.
Such a shame aperture is so bad. I really like the functionality - eg. having my photos automatically sync with my Apple TV, but it seems to be absolutely full of bugs.

  • Elements 9 does not recognize iPhoto pics when trying to import?

I need help in importing pics into elements 9 from I photo?  Elements does not recognize the photos to import them.

You may need the 9.0.2 update if using iPhoto 11. However you need to make a decision. Use Organizer or use iPhoto but not both otherwise you will end up with lots of duplicate files on your hard drive. You can alternatively set up PSE9 as your external editor in the iPhoto preferences. Then you can use Edit In directly from the iPhoto app. If you really want to switch to Organizer see these notes for further help:

  • My laptop does not recognize my iPhone 3GS as a camera device. I need to import my photos and videos and don't know how

    Hi everyone,
my laptop does not recognize my iPhone 3GS as a camera device anymore.
I need to import my photos and videos and don't know how.
The iPhone does charge when I plus it in the USB hub but it does not ask me to import the photos anymore
and it also doesn't show it as a device when I click on the "computer" button where an SD card or an Usb stick would normally be displayed..
I don't know what to do

Thank you, randers4! I now plugged it directly into the ports of my laptop and it's still not recognized.
Does the app Photosync work for more than a thousand photos or will this take me forever?
    Thanks a lot

  • When I choose external editor in iPhoto on my iMac it does not recognize Aperture. When I do the same on my laptop it works? Any ideas?

When I choose external editor in iPhoto on my iMac it does not recognize Aperture. When I do the same on my laptop it works? Any ideas?

No idea, but Aperture is not an external editor. Like iPhoto, Aperture is a Photo Manager. It's a database. There is no way to round trip a shot from iPhoto to Aperture and back again like you can with Photshop or an image editor.
Given that Aperture does pretty much everything that iPhoto does - and a whole lot more -  it begs the question: why not just use it to manage your photos?

  • Aperture 3 does not import video from iPhone

Aperture 3 does not want to import my videos from iPhone anymore. This used to work perfectly fine before, now Aperture hangs as soon as I try to upload any video.
    Is this a known bug??

  • Aperture does not recognize a vault

I have been assembling all my pictures in Aperture and then had to re install the program due to a repair when my disk was wiped. The re install went Ok and Aperture opens but does not recognize a vault I created on an external drive, where all the pictures are stored. How can I get to my pictures?
    Thanks in advance

If you renamed your drive after it was wiped out, Aperture will not recognize the vault and will give you a message saying that it isn't a valid vault. This happened to me when I decided to rename an external drive on which I had a vault. I had to rename the drive back to its original name in order for Aperture 3 to recognize the vault. I sent a bug report to Apple on this and asked if this means I have to create new vaults every time I decide to rename a drive.

  • Imovie 4 does not recognize my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV310 so I can't import.

I have used this camera before with out problems but must have been imovie 2.
The program does not recognize the camara. I have unpluged and plugged and restarted and done everything that I have read to do but still nothing. help

I have gone through the steps of this article. I am connected by firewire. I have disconected, recontected, turn on and off and restarted and nothing. I have made sure the date and time are correct. I did upload this tape from at old VHS tape of family pictures. This handycam wasn't a problem with older imovie versions and older systems 9. When I go to the sony site they only talk about connecting to a pc. When I go to apple profiler and fire wire is just says "
Fire Wire bus: Max speeed up to 400 Mb/sec" It does not recognize the camara. The only thing that I have not done is go buy a new firewire cord but I am worried that imovie can't recongnize the camara. Thanks for the help

  • IPhoto does not recognize Tiff format

I am trying to import my photos in TIFF ext however I get a response from iPhoto that it does not recognize the format.
    What I am doing wrong?
    thank You!

Did this test in the begging, and it doies not give me the option to create a new library.... : /
Then you're not holding the correct key or not holding it long enough while launching.
But I could import all to Aperture and then from iPhoto import the pictures......however when in the iPhoto library they have been "converted" to JPEG file and lost all quality...the same picture in Aperture (TIFF) has 36MB   while in the iPhoto after I imported 684KB!!
You need to understand how to use Aperture. You're getting the Aperture Previews, not the original files.
