Aperture 3 freezing up after making adjustments.

Endless(30-45 minutes)loading/processing after making adjustments to a photo. 'Quit Aperture' was not an available option so I 'Force Quit.' When I reopened the App, it was still doing the same thing. Next, I tried 'Force Quit' AND shut down my system. When I started it up again and reopened the App, still no change. That is about all I know to do; yep, sad but true.  Any advice? I sure would appreciate it!

I think this sounds like a problem I had with a corrupted image. Corrupted images happened to me when my iMac was turned off inadvertly when importing pics.
You can read on my blog how I resolved my issue. Hope it helps.

  • Aperture locked up while color making adjustments

While making adjustments to some images, Aperture locked up, actually it completely locked up my Mac. To the point that I had to force quit the application and the machine. Upon restarting, several images that I was adjusting were gone out of me Aperture screen and library.
I am new to this, I had not designated my external drive as the vault, but that was where my files were stored.
Do I have any hope of recovering those images?

First make sure your OS X is fine, run Disk Utility and repair permissions and/or run an os x maintenance app as Cocktail or Onyx.
After that rebuild Aperture's Library, to do so press and hold Command+Option as you launch Aperture. This process takes a while but fixes any problem related to the Library.
Before starting a long session adjusting images is recommended start Aperture after a fresh restart of your mac. Will run more smoothly.

  • Aperture 3.2.1 still issues with sorting images in albums, after making adjustments, cannot use arrow keys to go to next image. straightening tool auto turns image prior to straightening inconsistantly

Have updated aperture to 3.2.1, still having some issues during editing images.
    1. Basic item is sorting images does not happen correctly, move some images in file, they don't move correctly, after trying to move several, then they almost randomly move around.
    2. Straightening tool will automatically tilt images as soon as you touch the tool, turns them on about a 30 degree angle clockwise.
    3. Arrows on right side of keyboard used to move images in browser from the editing position, they move them if no editing is done, once you edit an image, cannot move to the next image using the arrow keys.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

  • LR 2.3 applies a green tint to RAW image AFTER making adjustments

    Hi all,
Thanks for having this great forum, it looks like there is some great information here. I clicked around the LR threads and the FAQ but I haven't found anything applying particularly to my issue/question, though, and I'm hoping some of you can help me understand what is going on. .
I have read about LR changing the colorcast on import, however in my case the images look fine after importing and processing. When I click BACK to an image that I have already processed, I am seeing LR 2.3 apply a green tint to it, and I have no idea why.
    What I am doing:
-Import Canon RAW files into LR collection (images look fine, no abnormal colorcast)
    Develop tab:
-I can click around the collection and view the images without any colors changing
-Process an image to my heart's content (image color still looks fine)
-Click to the next image and process the next one
-Mouse-over on the previously processed image on the bottom filmstrip, and preview shows up on the Navigator pane (preview looks as the image was edited previously)
-if I click to a previously processed image in the filmstrip, it will load into the center pane
-while the processed image loads here, the green tint gets applied to the image
-Color tint/green saturation has not moved from its previous position (even if it was moved during initial processing)
-In order to correct it, I either have to adjust the color tint slider about 20 points away from green, or dial down the green saturation to compensate.
Once I re-correct the image, I can click back to it again, and the mysterious green tint will no longer re-apply itself on this image.
This happens to most if not all of the images in the collection. I have only processed one other RAW collection in LR, but I did not have this issue.
I dont know what exactly is being changed to result in this green tint applying on its own, so I'm not sure if the adjustments I'm making are correcting it.fully.
I hope I'm detailed enough in explaining what I'm seeing, and that it makes some kind of sense.
Does anyone know what is going on here?
    Thank you!

Hi John, thanks for the reply.
Thanks, I'll look into the preferences in LR, although everything has remained mostly in its default settings. I've loaded JPG collections without seeing this either.
Would monitor profiles matter in my case? I ask because I am simply clicking back to a previous picture in the strip. When I leave the picture it looks fine, and returning to it shows that image but with the green tint. I haven't gotten to the point of exporting/converting the image, or anything further.
Some more information if it helps:
    Using MS Vista
    Using Canon Rebel XTi 400D
I copy only the raw files from the memory card to a folder, and then point the LR Import to that folder.
I will try replicating the issue on another computer in hopes to narrow it down. I am baffled.

  • Photoshop CS4 no display preview for Smart Sharpen after making adjustments

I just upgraded to Photoshop CS4 which seems to work fine except for the preview window in Smart Sharpen and Unsharp Mask. I get a preview display when using the sharping tools after I open a photo but if I make adjustments such as Levels or Curves the preview window is blank. It's recommended to sharpen a photo after all other adjustments and effects are applied. I can't see how sharp I'm making the image and if I'm getting any noise. Adobe said it was a problem with the driver with the graphics card and to call apple for an update. Apple says it doesn't have an update. Does anyone know a work around? Adobe had me throw away preferences and uncheck open GL. Neither worked.

  • PIcture goes black after making adjustments...Why?

I was using the repair tool to remove something from an image and my entire image went to black. Now its still there as a thumbnail but when I bring it up large on my screen, its a big black screen. Why is it doing this and how do I correct this? I noticed this a lot when I first started using Aperture and never figured out how to fix the issue other than clicking UNDO a few times and then I would see my picture again but that doesn't solve the issue if I need to edit the image!
    thanks!
By the way there is nothing showing in my Histogram either which is VERY STRANGE!!! Correction when I click on a slider, I do see the levels in my histogram but once I release the mouse from the slider, it goes empty and my image remains black.

This has happened to me as well. "Something" has corrupted my library. I have had to repair and rebuild my database several times. The "picture goes black" was a symptom. Shortly after that the color wheel started and Aperture crashed. Had to "force quit", then repair/rebuild.
My guess is there is a corrupt picture. If I could determine which one and remove it, I would.
I never had this problem until upgrading to version 3. I'm current with Snow Leopard and Aperture.
Never thought I would see an Apple Application crash as often as a Windows application.

  • Color wheel settings "jump" after making adjustments - can anyone reproduce?

    Hi,
Been noticing something very odd with Speedgrade lately, and I'm pretty sure it never happened with any of the earlier versions:
Making a large color adjustment to a clip using my Tangent CP200 panel (say, pushing the marker towards where the color ring begins), and then leaving the tab by switching to another layer, clip or even just shadows/midtones/highlights, will result in the marker having jumped MUCH further in the same direction. So if I had pushed it towards cyan on the inner edge of the color ring, the marker will suddenly find itself near the outer edge - however, the color will be unaffected until I actually move the marker again.
At first I assumed this was due to the CP200, but it also happens with the panel unplugged and using the mouse to drag the marker. It happens consistently and seems to scale linearly with the displacement. I'm assuming that Speedgrade is "misremembering" the position of the trackball or the virtual trackball marker, not the actual color settings. This is consistent with the fact that the same effect does not occur when using slider (mouse) or editboxes (keyboard) modes UNLESS I touch the CP200. At the same time, it seems to be related to Speedgrade and not to the panel, because the effect is dependent on the number of pixels the marker is moved on the screen, not the distance traveled by the physical trackballs. It also happens both in DirectLink and standard modes.
I've tried all the related settings, but nothing seems to apply. If this is a bug, it's pretty serious, as it makes going back for "minor adjustments" very problematic. Can anyone reproduce this, with or without a CP200?

Having participated near daily on this forum for a couple years now, this isn't a common issue but it does happen. Please file a bug report (they do actually quantify these for choosing what to budget fixing time allocations on) ...

Sometimes it's been (as for you) during someone using a surface, there's been problems with Wacom tablets having this issue also, and a few people with (as I have) a Kensington track-ball they use for working the wheels. In fact, it's much more likely with a Wacom especially using the pen tool than any other input device, I think. I've never really noted if my Wacom has this issue because of the way I use my tools ... I'm a lefty, so the pen-tab is on my right, keyboard in center, Kensington "Expert Mouse" 2" trackball with surrounding ring & four large paddle-style buttons on the right. That trackball/ring gets all my color-wheel work. It was occasionally glitchy back in the CS6 release and to the dot-upgrade to the first CC release, but has been pretty stable since. I've had to re-adjust the sensitivity of the controls in Sg for every release, however.

  • I bought my iPhone 5 three months ago and it keeps freezing, especially after making calls. What is the problem?

Not sure what to do. Will Apple Support cover it?  Will it need to be replaced?

I have had the same problem.  Between 8-10 minutes into a call the phone freezes and drops the call.  I cannot do ANYTHING for about 45 seconds while it says CALL ENDING.  I cannot use the phone at all and if anyone tries to call me it goes straight to VM.  I am on my 3rd iPhone 5 now due to this issue and another issue of a bad speaker.  I have restored, restarted, spent hours setting it up as a brand new phone all for not.  It still drops the call and freezes.  Makes me so mad.

  • Making adjustments with referenced images

my master files are located on an external HD . when it is offline, i can't make any adjustments. when it is connected, i can make adjustments and aperture creates a version out of the master file. i also use Nik Software (such as Silver Efex Pro) to make adjustments. when i save changes, the version is saved to aperture library ?? or should i click on the version and relocate it on the external HD? If I don't relocate it after making adjustments, then is it gone after i quit using aperture ??? please advise..

Yes, that's exactly how it works. You can't make adjustments unless the original file is online and available.

I'm not sure what you expect to happen but Aperture will never edit the Original file. The point of Aperture is that the original is always preserved.
Remember what you have on that external is simply file storage. If you want to acess a photo then you do so via Aperture.

    Well!
If you have ThunderBolt, I would go with such for an External Working Drive, spinning platter or SSD depending on your budget
This does not have to be huge just big enough to house your most current Jobs
Once the Current Job is put to rest I would move it to a larger multi bay hard drive unit, USB or FireWire nothing fancy, no RAID, set up as one single Disk
This would only be accessed when something is needed from a past Job so the connection does not have to be speedy
The Drobo would be relegated to Vaults and backups
You can set up a Vault on the Drobo to back up the External Working Library and then Reconnect it when you have moved the Library over to the other Enclosure
This has worked for me pretty smoothly for a long while, but I have found over the years that one can not assume all people work in the same manner! :-)

  • Aperture not making adjustments to selected image but to the previously selected image. Any ideas?

After making adjustment to an image I select the next image to work on. However, none of my adjustments appear to apply to the image. Then I noticed that the image I previously adjusted is messed up. The adjusts for my second image (the image selected) are actually being made to the previously worked on image (which is not selected). Any ideas on what is going on and how to correct this? Thank you for you help.

My first suggestion would be to uninstall Perfect Layers and see if the strange behaviour is still happening.  From what you've described in your post, this wasn't happening before the plugin was installed?

  • Scratch disk suddenly full after making tiny adjustments to photoshop file

Whilst working on a photoshop file the space on my hard drive suddenly drops from 12 Gb to a few hundred megabites, even after minor adjustments!! I then cant save my progress as the scratch disks are full!!! Ive tried looking all over the web and cannot fix this problem. Im an architecture student and I have a deadline fast approaching!

The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • Aperture 3 freezes the whole computer

Upgrading to AP3 has been for me rather an obvious step. Yesterday I downloaded the trial version. It created a new library. I created a new test project, imported some 50 RAWs and started playing with it.
EVERY TIME I use AP3 during making adjustments, geotagging or processing faces AP3 freezes the whole machine. At some point it displays "Processing...", spins for some time, then the spinning freezes, mouse freezes, the whole machine freezes. I cannot quit AP3, cannot do anything, just have to power down using the power button.
Is this normal for my machine? Is my computer too slow? Am I doing anything wrong?
I am now wondering if I should buy the upgrade at all!
    Wondering what your experiences are?

I have found this hint 2 days ago:
    http://aperture.maccreate.com/2010/02/15/problems-with-aperture-crashes-use-appz apper/
I followed the procedure. Then installed AP3 again, let it create a new library (this is still the Trial) and imported again +/-50 RAWs.
I have not been able to crash AP or the system so far. Faces enabled, tried geotagging, adjustments, brushes etc.
I have to confess I ordered the upgrade yesterday so I can see if the library upgrade works fine as well.
    Try it for yourself,

  • How to reduce size of RAW & PSD files after all adjustments are finished?

I thought I read something about an Aperture feature that reduces file size of RAW files to something like a large .jpg file. I have finished adjusting many RAW files and could better use the disc space for other things. Is there any such feature or procedure? I have not upgraded to Aperture 2.0 but will soon.
Also, after making the round-trip to PhotoShop Elements, I see a large PSD file. Can I shrink that file after all adjustments are made?

If you're using referenced files in Aperture, you can archive the raw files onto a CD or some other place and delete the original. Just make sure Aperture is set to generate previews before you do this. That way you can see the file even after it's gone. You can't export or make any adjustments unless you can re-link the raw file.
And as far as PSD files, you should change your preferences to use TIFF for external editors. Then at least you can save the file in Photoshop as a compressed TIFF, which can save quite a bit of room. Also, I've noticed that Aperture uses 16-bit TIFF files, so you can save even more room by converting the file to an 8-bit TIFF.
By the way, take note that while Aperture defaults to ".tiff" as it's file suffix for TIFF files, Photoshop prefers ".tif". This can cause confusion. You've been warned.

  • Clone tool causing Aperture to freeze...

Has anyone else experienced Aperture 'freezing' when trying to use the clone tool on anything (it seems) other than a black background? When I try to erase extraneous background 'stuff' by cloning a black area, it works fine. But when I try to, say, clone an area of color in order to erase a black background, Aperture freezes (and stays that way until I force quit) for as long as twenty minutes, sometimes.
Am I missing a setting somewhere...?

I appreciate your response very much, but I have a hard time believing it is hardware or OS related, for many reasons...
    1) It only happens when I am using the clone tool in a specific circumstance, and not across the board generally.
    2) It doesn't happen when I use the other side of the clone tool, the repair tool, of which the only difference is a radio button and software; they're both in the same control window.
    3) Something I neglected to mention in my first post was the behavior of the clone tool, when cloning a black background, accepting the first adjustment, but then claiming for the second adjustment that I hadn't option-clicked to define the point of cloning. It seems to happen every time I do this specific operation. All other adjustments, within that specific use of the clone tool, work as advertised; the second adjustment is the only one that can't remember what I selected for the first one.
    4) SInce my first post, Aperture has begun to behave quite weirdly indeed. I have some pictures of a predominately pink-ish hue, that in making adjustments, all is well until I get to noise reduction. Then, upon adding noise reduction, the preview looks great but the browser view looks like a photo negative and the version export is a photo negative. It was only through investigation that I discovered what the offending adjustment was. So FAR, it has only happened to a few pictures, and others of the same predominate hue adjusted normally.
I don't understand what is going on, but it is disturbing, and I am becoming rather upset.
These problems are a relatively new occurrence, within the last week or so, and I can't have my editor of choice starting to go south on me, as I'm in the middle of a large batch of editing.
Has anyone else experienced these types of problems...?
    William
