Aperture 3 library not appearing in open or attach dialog

I've just installed iPhoto 9.0.1 but the Aperture 3 library is now not appearing in open or attach dialog. How can I fix it?

There's a long thread here
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2620852&tstart=0
on the Aperture forum. Something there might help.

  • IPhoto library not appearing in open or attach dialog

Hello this is my first posting here and this might be in the wrong area but I'm having a problem with iPhoto and I'm not exactly sure where to ask for help.
I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 15" and have migrated all my stuff from my old MacBook 13". Everything is working great with one small problem. When I go to select photos in other applications I choose photos under media, and only photo booth shows up. On my old MacBook I had iPhoto as an option and could select my photos from there, but iPhoto is not showing up at all.
I've tried everything I could find on the forums such as rebuilding the database, trying to create a new database, etc.. Nothing makes iPhoto show up under the open, attach or choose photo dialog.
Does anyone out there know of any way to fix this issue??
Just an update: Aperture also is not available where it was before... The only option under media that is available is photo booth...

Fantastic- Thanks so much for this brilliantly simple answer. I was having the same problem on my lovely new 13inch macbook pro- was thinking about taking it back to a genius in the applestore- but this has saved me the trip. I wonder why it has never appeared as a software update though- you would have thought everyone would need it and would appear automatically rathe than have to find this forum. Anyway... thanks a bundle.
Oh, PS- I have no idea what you mean about the permissions I'm afraid, however i just downloaded, installed, restarted and it worked perfectly.

Yes, I am signed in to iTunes match on the macbook pro, iPhone , & iPad (all updated & correct music libraries) where I bought all the tunes but still no updated tunes on the iPhoto music library after 3 days of being on iTunes match.

  • Map ID not appearing in "Edit Map IDs" dialog box

I have RH HTML 8. I am adding new topics and assigning map IDs to those topics via the Edit Map IDs dialog box.
All of my map IDs appear in the BSSCdefault.h file as well as the project's .hm file. I even manually added the topic string to the project's ali file. However, it is not appearing in the Edit Map IDs dialog box. If it's not appear there, where does this dialog box get the map strings and map IDs from?
    No FARP685 string:

    Peter,
I think your discussion of this problem could explain the situation and propose a workaround more simply than it does.
Based on your article, I assumed that Robo displays only the built in Word list styles such as List and List Continue (since those were the only styles showing up in the style mapping dialog and since your example shows matching a Robo style named List Mapping to a Word built in style named List). I assumed I would have to match my Bullet style to a style named List in Word, and match the indented bullet style to List 2, and so on. The actual situation is that Robo, for some godforsaken reason that only idiots would understand, will not show a Word style if any numbering (bullets or numbers) is applied to it. That is, one does not have to avoid a class of styles called “List styles”, one only has to avoid applying numbering to the styles until later.
Thus the workaround is to create the word styles (with names that match the Robo styles!) that contain every attribute you need EXCEPT the numbering. That is, I can link Bullet to Bullet and Number to Number and Indented Number to Indented Number, and so on and on, as long as I have all the Word styles in the template with their numbering set to None.
Then after I generate the document, I can modify the styles to add the appropriate numbering, and voila!
Currently scrolling the doc & modifying styles. Might be a glimpse of daylight.

  • Aperture - Album from Shared Library Not Appearing in iTunes

I have a recurring problem which is making Aperture downright useless.
I operate a shared Aperture library (shared between 2 users on the same iMAC) which resides in the 'Shared' Users folder. Obviously we cannot have the same library open at the same time -that's no problem. I have set the sharing properties for the library contents and folders to Read and Write for both of us.
The problem is that when I add photos and create a new Project ad Album to put them in (not worried about the other user at the moment), these don't show up in the Aperture album or project list in Photos in iTunes to sync to my iPad or iPhone.
I have this very minute added a new album, closed Aperture and made sure its written to disk. Then I have closed the iTunes app and made sure it has quit.
Then when iTunes loads up again and I connect my device - the library and project do not appear in the items to sync.
This happens all of the time and it's making Aperture pretty pants. If the only resolution is to rebuild thumbnails, rebuild XML file etc or any more of that - then its not fit for purpose.
Has anybody a long term permanent fix for this?
It's seriously doing my head in!

Bumping this up as it seems that nobody has any idea.

  • Pictures not appearing in Open dialogue

When I try to attach a picture to an email or document, Aperture appears in the Media-Photo section of the Open dialogue, but no pictures show up. It looks as though there are no pictures in the Aperture library (there are thousands). I am running Aperture 3, sharing is set to Always in the Aperture settings and all the masters are in the Aperture library. Can someone help? Thanks!

Thanks - I was generating previews, so not sure why they would not show up - perhaps because I have just upgraded to this current machine from an older MacBook Pro. However, I created a new Library, imported photos from outside and inside the original library and now everything appears. I still wonder what was going on, but at least everything now seems to be working properly.
    Thanks again.

  • Aperture library suddenly won't open

OK, I've been putting off updating to the latest version of Aperture (3.4.3) because I had a sort of premonition about something bad happening to my library. But I finally got around to doing the upgrade, having felt this version had been around long enough to be stable. Big mistake. It worked OK initially, but suddenly today won't open my library, no matter what I do.
When I launch Aperture, it opens a little window with a spinning marker in it and the message "Opening Aperture Library". This is normal prior to the main window opening, but usually I see it for no more than a second or so. Now, it's all I see; the main window never appears.
Oddly, Apertur's menu structure seems to work OK while this 'loading' window is open. I can, for example, open the Activity window. However, it contains no useful information to say what's going on; the entries are just blank in this window. Also, I can quit Aperture normally (whereupon it says 'updating previews' as usual).
I've tried all three of the database-reparing options that Aperture offers if you hold down Option-Command when starting: repair permissions, repair database, rebuild database. In all three cases, it goes through the repair process and then just reverts to showing the little 'opening library' window and nothing has improved.
The upgrade to version 3.4.3 apparently went OK the other day, and I've opened and quit the software a few times since I upgraded it, and I thought everything was fine. The one thing that wasn't quite right (and I wonder if this has somethnig to do with my problem now) was Photo Stream. It didn't seem to be working properly. If I clicked the Photo Stream entry in the list at the left of the window, what I saw was just the 'welcome' message with buttons below it to sign in or turn off the service ("No, thanks" button). I didn't see any actual Photo Stream content. In this window, however, it *did* say that I was signed in with my usual Apple ID, so it wasn't very clear to me whether it was OK or not.
There's a photo I took on my iPhone which I was expecting Aperture 3.4.3 to download from Photo Stream, but it never did. I.e. just one shot that failed to download; all the previous ones had been downloaded by my previous version of Aperture. I couldn't see why the missing picture was failing to download, so I tried turning Photo Stream off and on again from within Aperture. I'm really not sure whether this worked or not; there didn't seem to be any meaningful feedback from the software.
Anyway, after having tried to launch Aperture today (and failed), I checked System Preferences and found that Photo Stream was turned off. So I turned it on again. Unfortunately it makes no difference: Aperture still won't load its library at all now.
I have tried all of following:
    1. Rebooting my Mac
    2. Verifying the disk contaning my Aperture library (it was fine)
    3. All three of Aperture's database-repair options
    4. Turning Photo Stream on in System Preferences
...and nothing makes any difference. Aperture simply will not open my library but just sits there, twiddling its spinner.
NB My library still appears to be OK, in that I can access its contents from other software successfully using the media browser.
What I haven't yet attempted is to create a blank new library and import my existing library into it. Failing any better ideas I'll try that next, but it's going to be a big operation that will take a lot of time and disk space, so I'd like to see if there are any better things to try first.
I must say I'm very disappointed that Aperture can apparently break so easily. I haven't lost any actual pictures because I'm paranoid and keep a separate copy of all my shots just in the Finder, external to any management software. But I've lost access to lots of photo books I've created over the years and various other resources, not to mention all the editing work I've done on thousands of shots within Aperture (which I haven't retained separately).
This is supposed to be professional level software. How can it seriously (a) break this easily and (b) not be able to retrieve itself via its database repair options?I'm very disappointed.

Thanks for that very helpful reply. I've followed your instructions and done some further digging too.
To answer your three points, first of all:
    1. No, I haven't imported any images since upgrading my Aperture library for version 4.3.4; I did move photos between projects a couple of times, but mostly I just checked that everything appeared OK after the upgrade and tried to work out why PhotoStream didn't seem to be working properly.
    2. I've attempted to create a new Aperture library. This didn't work! A library gets created on disk, but attempting to open it produces the same endless spinner as the main library.
    3. I switched to a spare user account (a blank one called 'test', just as the system created it) and tried to launch Aperture and create a new library there. Same result: library is created but won't load in.
This is very strange, because I'm not aware of having changed anything substantial on my system recently. No new software that installed anything as a login item, system service or background process etc. that I'm aware of. (I'm actually quite wary of such software, and don't have much of it on my system.) The only substantial thing that I know has changed since I last successfully launched Aperture is the year, to 2013! And I hardly think that's the cause...!
I'm wondering if Aperture itself has become corrupted somehow, and whether I should trash it and reinstall it. But that's rather a pain because I've got the DVD version, not the one from the Mac App Store. Besides, I'm not sure what remnants it leaves on the system (sandbox files etc.).
I've verified my startup disk, on which Aperture resides, and repaired permissions, and no error was reported (nor did many permissions need to be fixed).
Now, the only other possible explanation I can come up with is that startup is being prevented by a misbehaving PhotoStream process, as I've just discovered that I'm having endless crashes from PhotoStreamAgent, as reported in Console. I'm getting the same series of messages popping up every few seconds:
01/01/2013 21:58:51.649 xpcd[4676]: PhotoStreamAgent[5540]: registration request failed: (0x11, 0x0) The file “com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.agent.plist” couldn’t be saved in the folder “Preferences” because a file with the same name already exists.
    01/01/2013 21:58:52.431 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[473]: (com.apple.photostream-agent[5540]) Job appears to have crashed: Illegal instruction: 4

    01/01/2013 21:58:52.615 ReportCrash[5531]: Saved crash report for PhotoStreamAgent[5540] version 2.7 (40.34) to /Users/rghallas/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/PhotoStreamAgent_2013-01-01-2158 52_Richard-Hallass-Mac-Pro.crash
    01/01/2013 21:58:52.620 ReportCrash[5531]: Removing excessive log: file://localhost/Users/rghallas/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/PhotoStreamAgent _2013-01-01-215516_Richard-Hallass-Mac-Pro.crash
This is just repeating every 10 seconds, as suggested by the 'Will start in 10 seconds' message. Starts; crashes; loop.
Now, I've searched for a file called "com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.agent.plist" and have found three instances: one each in the following places:
    Aperture:
    /Users/rghallas/Library/Containers/com.apple.Aperture/Data/Library/Preferences/c om.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.agent.plist
    PhotoStream Agent:
    /Users/rghallas/Library/Containers/com.apple.photostream-agent/Data/Library/Pref erences/com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.agent.plist
    iPhoto:
    /Users/rghallas/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/Data/Library/Preferences/com .apple.iLifeAssetManagement.agent.plist
In all three cases, the file appears to be an alias that points to itself (i.e. original path is the same as the alias's path in each case). That seems weird but I hope it's right, given that it applies to all three (and the files alongside these plists in the folders in which they reside).
Anyway, the logs unfortunately don't make it clear exactly *which* Preferences folder is being referred to, and hence which com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.agent.plist file is causing a problem. I imagine it's the one associated with PhotoStream Agent, since it's the Agent that's producing the ongoing crash reports. But either way I don't know what to do about it. I suppose I could try trashing this particular plist file, but I'm reluctant to do so as I don't want to break anything further.
NB Aperture itself doesn't appear to output any log messages to say what's happening while it's failing to load its library.

  • Aperture library not available as desktop or screensaver option

Aperture library is not available as desktop or screensaver option. Nor is it available in Fotomagico. Any ideas?

Go into "System Preferences" -> "Desktop & Screensaver" -> "Desktop"
Scroll down the list on the left.  The top categories should be the Apple default desktop images that came with Snow Leopard.  Below that you should see iPhoto and it's events, albums, etc.  Below that you should see Aperture with your projects listed below that.
Do you at least see the projects listed or does Aperture not even appear?  Or is the problem that you aren't able to select any of the images from a project?
If the latter I'm wondering if you're missing previews.  You might go into "Aperture" -> "Preferences..." and pick the "Previews" category.  Make sure the check boxes are selected for "New projects automatically generate previews" and "Use embedded JPEG from camera when possible" (if your camera shoots in RAW+JPEG mode then it'll use the JPEGs from the camera as the preview instead of building it's own.)
You can force it to update previews but note that since it normally wants to generate previews automatically the 'Update Preview(s)' isn't a global function... it only rebuilds the previews for images you have selected (which means you have to go into each project, select all images, and do a "Photos" -> "Update Previews"
Beyond this, you'd probably need to run Aperture first-aid to determine if there is some corruption in the Aperture library preventing it from being used.

  • Some Aperture stills not appearing in iMovie 11 Media Browser

    Hello all,
I have been importing images into Aperture for a while now and just realized that iMovie (09 and 11) are not reading some of the stills I have stored in it. I have made sure that all my images are stored in an Aperture managed library and not as reference files. When I start up iMovie it takes a while and scans for new videos but I'm concerned with the stills that are not appearing. I can see the project and album titles appearing in the Media Browser but iMovie states that there are no files inside. I've also told Aperture to always share previews with iLife and iWork. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forums.
The fact that you are able to see the Ap library and the project suggests that there maybe no previews available for that project.
At the top of the Library tab is a little cog, within here is an option for previews, also in the Ap preferences is another option for creating previews, check that these are set correctly.

  • Library not appearing

I recently updated my Mac. iTunes was running very slowly and I keep my 40gb + music library on my external hard drive. When I restarted my computer I opened iTunes and my library did not appear. It took me to the basic Music page that first time users of iTunes see when they first open the program. When I go to the iTunes store it still shows my regular id. Not even my saved playlists are appearing. I would just add my library back to iTunes but that can take several hours because of the size. Any recommendations?

  • Aperture Library not working after update

Hello, I have a problem with my Aperture library.
I had Aperture 3.2.4, and a perfectly working library. I copied the library to an external hard disk, and reinstalled my OS, since I had just added an SSD.
I then installed Aperture 3.2.4, and tried to open the library, that I had copied back in Pictures, but I got this message.
To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded. Verify that you have iPhoto 9.3 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it.
Since I had not used iPhoto in a while, I don't understand why I get this message, especially since the library is called Aperture Library.aplibrary
I then tried to update Aperture to version 3.3, hoping this would help, but I got no reslut, I still get the same message.
I installed iPhoto 9.3, and tried to open the library, this time getting a different message.
Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I get the same message if I try to rebuild the library, I tried in Aperture and in iPhoto.
BTW, the masters are safe, I tried to recover them in a new Aperture library in the meanwhile, and I have all my pictures, the only problem is that they are about 15 thousand and they were divided into hundreds of different Projects. Now I have them in one project called "Recovered Files".
    What should I do?

I then installed Aperture 3.2.4, and tried to open the library, that I had copied back in Pictures, but I got this message.
To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded. Verify that you have iPhoto 9.3 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it.
Your copying seems to have corrupted your Library. When you open the "Get Info" panel on your library, what does it show?
The "General" brick should show "Kind: Aperture Library", and your recent Aperture Version; the "Open with" should show "Aperture". Or does tis show "iPhoto" library?
If the Library is shown as iPhoto Library, ctrl-click it to show the "Package Contents". What do you see inside? Do you see file- and folder names with "Aperture" or with "iPhoto"?
Also look at the original library on your external volume with "File > Get Info" from the Finder.
This is really weird. Usually the trouble shooting measures that Kirby pointed to should suffice.

  • Aperture Library not available in iMovie

I want to add some photos from my Aperture Library into an iMovie project. However, when I click on Aperture Library, it says "Loading", but the wheel keeps spinning forever and nothing happens. I have iMovie version 10.0.1 and Aperture 3.5.1. Aperture is also set up to automatically generate previews.
Does anyone recognize this problem and know about a solution?

I am not sure (I don't use Aperture )but if you have a very large number of photos in your Aperture library it may be struggling to list them all in the iMovie window .  You can also use the Finder to navigate your Aperture library and locate the photos you want.  You can drag them singly or in groups directly to Events or even into the timeline.
    Geoff.

When I go to upload Aperture photos to the web, my Aperture library is not listed in the media browser. Only iPhoto and Photo Booth is there. I've had to go into Aperture and export the photos to upload them. This started to happen after I upgraded to Lion. Any suggestions?

Aperture did not show up in any other apps, but I found an discussion started by someone with the same issue, and the issue was resolved by creating a new library, then swicthing back to your original library.
