Aperture 3 Library size vs iPhoto Library

Hi!
I recently switched from iPhoto to Aperture and am wondering about the library size? In iPhoto the library size was bloated because it made a copy of every photo behind the scenes upon import. I got tired of that and thought that moving to Aperture would solve the problem. But, after importing most of my photos into Aperture, then comparing the size of my Aperture Library package with the size of my Photo folder in Finder that I imported from, I'm finding my Aperture library is over 100 GBs bigger!! Yikes! How did that happen?
I am running a managed library, but I thought Aperture didn't make a copy of every photo behind the scenes but rather just made versions of the master when changes are made.
Frankly, I haven't even done any editing yet, just importing. So, why the huge library size compared to the size of my Photo library in Finder? It's 186 GBs versus 85 GBs. Same photo collection. Crazy.

No, from folders in Finder. I always have my photos in Finder too on an EHD, even after I import them to iPhoto or Aperture.

After installing Aperture and leaving photos in iPhoto library, why did iphoto library size almost double?

I installed Aperture and chose to leave all my images in the iPhoto library until I became more comfortable/familiar with Aperture.
I was looking at my hard drive space and see that the available space went way down. In Finder, the Aperture library.ap library is 17.97 gb and the iPhoto library is 122.75 gb.
When I open iPhoto, it says that it contains 19349 images/87 gb.
What happened? Is that extra size related to the Aperture referencing the images? Should I delete and start over, and move all the images into Aperture so that they are managed there?
I'm just figuring my way around Aperture, and I'm trying not to over-think the organizational differences, but this size discrepancy seems a bit too much.

I wish I had more info for this but I'm stumped. As I said there is no reason Aperture would increase the iPhoto library size by importing iPhoto's library.
BTW how did you do the import, that might shed some light on the problem.
The image count between the backup and the live iPhoto libraries seems fairly consistent so why the jump in size I can't say. And as for the increase in the number of images in Aperture, you started with an empty Aperture library, correct? And did you import anything directly into Aperture since you did the iPhoto import?
I'm still a little confused on the whole thing where Aperture shows both original and edited versions of an image, and some show both RAW & JPEG versions of an image,
Well Aperture really doesn't show both the original and edited versions, all you ever see are the versions unless you specifically ask to see the master. When you import an image into Aperture a version of the master is automatically made and displayed. Because at this point the version is no different then the master (you haven't made any adjustments to it yet) the version looks exactly like the master but it is the version you are seeing.
As for the RAW & JPG thing, if you shoot both RAW + JPG's in your camera when you import them you have the choice of which to make the master or to make each one a master. Not sure if that is what you are referring to.
I'm wondering whether I would have been better off just moving the whole iPhoto library into Aperture at the beginning, and deleting the iPhoto library.
That is definitly one option and the option most users who switch eventually make. You're not going to want to have both programs handeling your photos. But you should probably hold off until you;re more omfortable with Aperture and make sure you have a good backup of the iPhoto library before you do anything.
Remember when you import the iPhoto library into Aperture you're only choice is to copy the images not move them. This is done so that you can make sure all went OK before doing anything with iPhoto.
If you have the room you could try bringing in the iPhoto library backup, and trying the import again into a new empty Aperture library.

Why is my Aperture 3 Library 50% larger than my iPhoto Library?

So I have the latest iPhoto and I bought Aperture 3 (unlocked the trial). I imported my iPhoto Library into Aperture 3 with faces disabled and the preview option off. once it was imported, I turned on Faces and let it do its thing. As of right now, my iPhoto Library is 44.91GB and the Aperture 3 Library is 65.78GB. By y math that's about a 50% increase. Anyone have any insight into why?
I have maybe 50 RAW shots, the rest are all JPG and the occasional iPhone 3GS video. 450 Projects if that matters.
The only clue I can think of is that in my keyword list I have "iPhoto Original" and "iPhoto Modified", both have about 40k images tagged. Did the import from iPhoto perhaps copy both masters and versions? If so, how do I fix it cause I don't see duplicate images.

I think I may have mistyped above. After importing the iPhoto Library, I have 4 new keywords: iPhoto Converted, iPhoto Edited, iPhoto Hidden and iPhoto Original.
Converted has 280 images
Edited has 1 image, but that image says "1 of 2" in the upper left corner.
Hidden has 6, but these are just the images that were hidden in my iPhoto library.

For completeness, iPhoto shows 41,118 items, but I have been removing some projects from A3, so I expected it to be less.

When exporting images from iPhoto library to Aperture 3 library the highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue. This happen to all images in the Aperture 3 library, why?

For some reason all the images in Aperture 3 library have had their highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue. I can correct them one at a time with contrast control. This just happen on its on after I uploaded MOuntain Lion. Now when I go to transfer images from iPhoto this happens. The images are all right in iPhoto but this is not the case with Apeerture. I have 15,000 images in Aperture 3 and I can't afford the time to correct them one at a time. What is it that I did to cause this problem?

You have "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" turned on.
Toggle this on/off from the View menu.
Thresholds are set at "Aperture➞Preferences➞Advanced". (I have mine set to 100% ~ it's not clear what the scale is.)

Aperture 3 Library Size

Does anyone have any idea what the amount of referenced images in an aperture 3 Library should be? Has this changed from Aperture 2? I am trying to get all of my libraries moved over and wonder if the limits have changed and how it affects speed in 64 bit.

I just completed upgrading my old Aperture 2 library to 3. In Ap2, the library was I believe around 2GB, maybe as big as 4GB. Now, in Ap3, it is 11GB. Absolutely nothing changed other than the upgrade.
To give a better example, I also finished importing all of my old photos (from 1999 - 2006) into Ap3... I'd say roughly 75% of the photos are from an old Nikon Coolpix 950 - not exactly the world's highest megapixel camera (1600 x 1200 pics). After importing those photos, I now have a grand total of 27,900 photos in my Aperture 3 library - all referenced masters. Now the library is nearly 25GB in size.
I did a Show Package Contents on the library, and discovered, much to my dismay, that the vast majority of that space is taken up by the thumbnails that Aperture creates for each picture. (just Get Info on the Thumbnails directory in the package - you'll see what I mean). I am really surprised that thumbs take up this much space now - and annoyed that they are stored in massive files that make it impossible to see how large a given thumbnail is for a particular image.
I don't see any way in Aperture to adjust the size of the thumbnails - and of course, you can't turn them off (but that wouldn't make any sense anyway). Note I'm not talking about Preview images, which you do have control of - those in my library only take up about 3GB, and even after deleting all of them, my library was still nearly 22GB.
I hope Apple comes out with some sort of explanation for why the thumbnails are so big now - seems particularly vexing considering the very low resolution of my earlier pictures (which take up roughly half of my collection).

What version of iPhoto do you have?
The maximum size of a library for iPhoto 05 or earlier is 25k items
For iPhoto 6 - to iPhoto 09 is 250k items
For iPhoto 11 it's 1,000,000 items.
There is no limit on the HD space. So, to iPhoto it matters not if the library takes up 10 gigs of space or 1,000 gigs of space.
In practise, there are other considerations of course: how much Ram do you have on your machine? Remember always to have to at least 10 gigs of free space on the disk.
FWIW: I have 52k items in a Library. It runs perfectly well. We've seen reports on here from folks in with in excess of 100k items in the Library - and one in excess of 300k items.

Aperture seeing changes to referenced iPhoto library

I am a newbie with Aperture 3 having used iPhoto for a couple of years. I have 3 or 4 older iPhoto libraries and a current iPhoto library. My wife uses the same iMac and likes iPhoto.
I have set up Aperture to reference all the iPhoto libraries.
My question is simple: what do I need to do to make sure Aperture is able to see any new photos that get imported to iPhoto by my wife? It doesn't seem to see the changes. Surely I don't need to re-import each time she adds a couple of shots?

No you haven't, because Aperture is not able to do that. What you've done is set Aperture to import files while leaving them in their current location, which happens to be inside an existing iPhoto Library.
The only integration between Aperture and iPhoto is to assist you to migrate from iPhoto to the more powerful app. There is no dynamic relation between the two apps, iPhoto has no ability whatever to read the Aperture Library and what ability Aperture has towards the iPhoto one is designed for migration.
Specifically:

Surely you do. File -> Import -> Show iPhoto Browser will allow you to bring over individual pics/ Events or Albums. However this will only work in Managed mode, the files will be copied to the Aperture Library.

Move existing Aperture photos (from iPhoto) to Aperture's library's library

Hi,
I recently moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I did something wrong tho, since now most of my photos in Aperture are still in iPhoto's library (all of these show the "iPhoto Original" keyword).
I want to have them all in my Aperture's library, but I put many time on Aperture's organization and don't want to have to import all from the very beginning. Is there any way I can move those files still in iPhoto's library folder to Aperture's library? I plan to uninstall iPhoto after that, that's why I want all photos in Aperture's library.

If the image is shown in Aperture, the image is in Aperture's Library.
The question is, where are the Master files on which the images in your Aperture Library are based. (The keyword "iPhoto Original" tells you nothing about the location of the Master.)
Right-click an image. Does "Show in Finder" appear in the pop-up menu? If so, then your image has a Referenced Master (Referenced Masters are located outside the Aperture Library (the image is in the Library and has a pointer to its Master which is outside the Library)). If not, your image has a Managed Master (the image, the pointer, and the Master are all inside the Aperture Library.
You can filter for images with Referenced or Managed Masters. Also, most of the default Metadata Overlays include a Badge which will show you which images have Referenced Masters (as well as the status of the Master).
Since you (seem to) want to have all of your images' Masters be Managed (= inside the Aperture Library), simply select all images and execute the command "File→Consolidate Masters". You can confirm that this has been done by using a Filter set to show all images with Referenced Masters. It should show no images.
Once all of your Masters have been consolidated into your Aperture Library, you can safely delete your iPhoto Library. You can also uninstall iPhoto is you wish.

Aperture 3 failing to update your Aperture 2 library? Please read!

This is for those who are not running the trial version - the trial version CANNOT upgrade an existing library.
Like many others here I ran into a snag when upgrading my Aperture 2 library with Aperture 3. I kept getting "Warning: Update Failed" box immediately after choosing to upgrade the library for the new features in A3 (I tried with the box checked and unchecked). I rebuilt and did a permissions fix using A2 (holding down Option + Command while launching A2) but still no avail. I checked the library file itself to see if I (username for my OS X account) had read & write privileges - I did. I even tried to re-install A3 to see if that would fix anything - it didn't.
I keep my library on an external hard drive in a folder called "pictures". Within this folder are both my Aperture and iPhoto libraries. I then thought to check to see if I (username for my OS X account) had read & write privileges for the "pictures" folder and was partially relieved to see that I didn't. I changed that and A3 started the update/upgrading procedures.
So, if anyone else out there is experiencing this same problem check to make sure you have read & write privileges along the entire path to your Aperture library.
Please note, me not having these privileges on my "pictures" folder did not affect A2 in any way (I could launch my library without any issues), just A3.

Quit Aperture and double-click the library you want upgraded. Aperture will open and upgrade it. Once you've upgraded it you can import it into your other library.

Aperture 3 library won't show repair library screen

I tried to update my Aperture 2 library today (470GB) and everything worked just fine till it got to 96% and stayed at this percentage, so i force-quit Aperture. The library now only shows 400GB but I have one still in the old version with the rest of the pictures (according to the size). The new library opens but most of the thumbnails are screwed up (just vertical lines or black screens), so I wanted to repair the library (I also cannot import it into a completely new library) but holding down command & option while double-clicking the library just opens up the library instead of going to the repair window. Any ideas on how I can force it to come up?
EDIT: Totally forgot: It says in the activity that it is updating the library and going through the photos. No idea what it is doing, I'll let it run for now but it'll take some time till I know what it does, since it tells me it needs to go through >10,000 objects.

Sorry that was not helpful. I am using the trial version only and HELP states 'Aperture provides a few methods for reconstituting your Aperture library and the file relationships within it.'
To repair or rebuild your Aperture library : - following by empty white space.
Having looked through Aperture Commands under the Aperture Menu I cannot find any likely entry other than I have already mentioned.

I've just installed iPhoto 9.0.1 but the Aperture 3 library is now not appearing in open or attach dialog. How can I fix it?

Upgrading to Aperture 3, my Aperture 2 library got smaller (60GB vs. 102GB)

Moving from an old MacBook Pro running Aperture 2.1.4 to a new MacBook Pro, with Aperture 3.1.
I copied the Aperture 2 Library (55,000 images, nearly all referenced) to the new machine, and opened it in Aperture 3.1, which then upgraded my Library (overnight process).
Now I have two Libraries on the new machine: Aperture Library_original, and Aperture Library.
The new Aperture Library seems to work fine, and has the same number of photos as the original.
The original seems untouched, and if I try to open it in Aperture 3, it prompts me (again) to upgrade it.
Here is my concern:
My new Library is only 60GB, whereas the original is 102GB.
What, if anything is missing? It seems to work fine, but I have not been able to check all 55K photos!
Searching online, I can't find any reference to Library size decreasing with the upgrade from Aperture 2 to 3. If anything, some complain that it becomes larger in Aperture 3.
Does anyone know what is going on, or how to check that my new Library is complete?

Your previews are best set to your screen size, the ideal preview size having an asterix next to it.
Previews are relevant for referenced workflows, sharing with iLife and other apps, otherwise up to you.

Why won't my screensaver allow me to access my external drive that contains my aperture 3 library

I can't get my screensaver to see my Aperture 3 library which is on my external drive via firewire. It wants to use an older Aperture 2 library on another drive instead. Both drives are daisy chained together.
The only libraries that my System preferences sees are iPhoto and the older Aperture 2 library.

Making multiple vaults (by category) from one massive Aperture 9 library?

I am having trouble backing up a massive Aperture 9 library to a vault. So I want to separate my libraries into several vaults - one for family, one for projects, one for professional work, etc. So how do I do that now that I have this one huge library?
I've gotten to the point that I can't back up successfull to a vault. (Yes I am using Time Machine, too). But how can I separate what I've go in 9 to individual vaults?

Aperture only has versions up to 3. What version do you have? It's not version 9.
There is, in theory, no limit to the size of a library which you can back up via vault. What kinds of errors are you getting when you try to back it up? How large is your Aperture library (in terms of images)?
As far as I know, a vault is all-or-none. That is, you cannot choose what pieces of your libray to back up to a particular vault. However, if worse comes to worse, you can split your library into multiple libraries and then have a vault for each one.

I can not see Aperture 3 library in IWeb

I was trying to post my latest pics to my webpage, but after starting IWeb the Aperture library does not show up in photo area. Iphoto is there. I have set the Aperture 3 preferences to share with Iwork and ILife. Aperture photos do not show up in neither IWeb or any IWork programs.
Any thoughts or suggestion

When i just upgraded to Aperture 3.0.2. I was able to see Aperture 3 library after installation, but only 2 of 35 photos are visible in IWeb photo panel for that project. I updated previews as well as thumbnails but no change. I am using IWeb "09 V 3.0.1 I checked for updates and none available.
