Aperture 3 loses photos?

I've just noticed that thousands of photos have disappeared from my Aperture 3 library. Projects now have 0 photos in them. Also when I download new photos into Aperture they simply don't stay or if they do they are useless because I can't export them, I get, "No Reference Files" ' The selection doesn't have any referenced files'. Is this problem being encountered by anyone else? Have I wasted my money? Will I have to take down Aperture & find a reliable programme?
If anyone can help, PLEASE DO DO. Thanks. Pete.

Hi Pete
I'm really sorry to hear that the library first aid failed for you, even after working through all three steps.
I haven't had the question of why this has happened under Aperture 3 answered.
For a fair bit of the last 20 years or so, I've done IT support, ranging from sitting beside users at their machines on their desk to remotely diagnosing problems over the phone or by email. Without access to your system, and without being able to watch over your shoulder for a while to see how you operate your system (with respect, you might have 'bad habits' which are not apparent when our only channel is email), it's impossible to say with absolute certainty.
But here's my reckoning about your problem, for what little it might be worth to you. Your Aperture library file was corrupted at some unknown point. Ongoing use made the problem worse. Then it got to the stage where you began noticing empty projects, but by that stage, it was too late. Even then when you ran the first aid routines, the damage was too deeply into the library file for recovery to be possible.
Although it appears to be a single file, the Aperture library file is actually a complex hierarchy of folders and files - just the same as in, for example, your home directory. But Apple have a little 'switch' that can be flicked that makes the hierarchy of files and folders appear to be a single file. These special data structures are called "packages". (The great majority of the programs in the Applications folder are packages. The iPhoto library and the old Aperture v2 library are packages. iMovie project files are packages. Pages (iWork) documents are packages. They've been around a long time and they're widely used - and not just by Apple.)
Packages in general can be very complex internally. Aperture packages definitely are. My own Aperture library with approximately 5,300 images uses referenced masters - ie the original JPGs and RAW files are stored external to the library file. Even so, there are currently just under 41,000 objects inside the package. (If I was using managed masters, ie master images stored inside the library file, the figure would be more like 46,000 files.) There are several database files for different aspects of the application, and thousands of smaller images and related files. For example, all the thumbnails and previews are stored in the package. There are also special text files (these are XML data files) which store data to do with Places, Albums and lots of other aspects of your photos. In short, there's a heck of a lot going on inside your Aperture library file and one primary database is at the heart of it all. All it takes is for a pointer in either the main or one of the supporting databases to get knocked out of sync or maybe a rogue corrupt image to 'sneak in' and you've got the seeds sown for bigger trouble down the road. Problems might not show up initially. A problem might be in an area of the application that you rarely use. But sometimes these problems have a way of growing until they bite you in quite a significant way.
In your case, there might have been a pre-existing problem in your Aperture v2 library file which came through the upgrade to v3. Or you might have incurred a corruption from early v3 crashes. We'll never know for certain but, without getting too technical, that's my reckoning.
In spite of that doom and gloom, there are still a couple of avenues which have not yet been mentioned in this thread and I believe that they are still worth pursuing. Especially if, as seems to be the case here, you don't have any backups of these images and are faced with considerable image loss. I know you're really hacked off about this just now (and I don't blame you), but let me know if you'd like some assistance in trying to recover your 2,000 missing images. I can't guarantee success, but I'm willing to give it a try. The ball's in your court. On the off-chance that you will get back in touch, I have to say that the only important thing for now is to keep your library file intact.
Regards,
Gary

    Hello dancetoday07,
Let's see if we can square this away for you. With backing up your iPhone, it will back everything you have using iTunes and if you use iCloud, by default, backs up everything. After you have made a backup you can restore that to put the contents of the backup on your replacement iPhone. If you want to put certain things back on, you will at least need to export the content to your computer, like your photos and videos. If you only want to put certain things back on, then you will need to sync that over with iTunes. All the information you will need are in the articles below.

  • I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

Are they taking space in all of these locations?
It depends on how you are using iPhoto and Aperture.
iPhoto and Aperture each create their own library files, and the default location for them is in /users/youruseraccount/Pictures
You can configure iPhoto and Aperture to use the same Library file, in which case your photos are only stored once.  But if you are using iPhoto & Aperture with independent library files, you may in fact be duplicating your storage.
The second consideration is whether or not you have configured iPhoto and/or Aperture as reference libraries, in which case their library files only reference photos you have stored in other places on your hard drive.  Setting them up as reference libraries does not duplicate the photos inside the library files.

  • How to email Aperture library photos from iPhoto

Want to use Aperture library photos (which I can easily view from iPhoto 11) in the beautiful email systems of iPhoto. When I select the Aperture library photos and select Share-email nothing happens, then the Share-email menu becomes grayed out. According to the help available all aperture library shots are fully available for use in iPhoto 11. Any suggestions? Thanks

You hav to move the photos from Aperture to iPhoto to do this.
    1. Using the Media Browser you can drag from the browser to the iPhoto Window - this yields the Aperture Previews
    2. Export from Aperture to the Finder, import to iPhoto.
That said if you use Apple's Mail.app you can
A: Take advantage of the Stationery feature, which has more templates than iPhoto, more varied thatn iPhoto and others can be downloaded
B: It's a full mail application, with an outbox and so on
C: You can email from Aperture, and so avoid this loop into iPhoto.

I'd like to remove a thin line that is part of the page design in one of Aperture's photo books.  I can't seem to make it happen.  Any suggestions?

The mouse that came with my Mac does not have a right click feature. When I try to highlight and click, it just opens the link I don't want anymore. What I want to do is remove unwanted links from the top bar. For example, I no longer use GoodSearch or myEarthLink, but I can't delete them. There are also some links that never should have found their way up there, and I don't know how they ended up there, and I can't remove them either. I've read through a ton of questions and answers, and I can't find one that addresses the problem. With my Safari browser, all I have to do to remove an unwanted link is to click and drag it to the trash. It doesn't appear to work that way with Firefox, to my chagrin. I hope this better explains my question. Maybe that will give you a better insight into a solution.

  • Cannot see Aperture 3 photos in iWeb

I have a huge problem... I am a photographer and am constantly updating my website, however, I cannot see my Aperture 3 photos in iWeb (the folders that I have created over the past few months don't show up at all). I have had to transfer photos from Aperture 3 to my iPhoto library in order to use them in iWeb, which is such a waste of time (and space). Can someone please assist???

If you have not found any problems using DiskUtility, I would suggest that you might try deleting your Aperture preferences file (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2945) then re-open Aperture and set your preferences up again. That may resolve the iWeb issue as well as your Export difficulties.
    Let us know what happens.
    Cheers!

  • Aperture & RAW photos?

Does the iPhone sync with Aperture like photo iPods do? And if so does it support RAW files (which current iPods don't)?

As long as you have previews for the photos, the sync should be fine. I shoot raw, and generally keep previews off. But I made a new album just for iphone syncing, dragged in all the photos I wanted (it automatically copies them in without removing them from their home projects) then updated previews, and then told itunes to sync with that new album. All went well.
Note that you can set the resolution of the previews and their quality in Aperture prefs. Mine are far higher than the iphones res. though I'm not sure they're downsampled for iphone's sync. They come out to about 124 k on the iphone, which I know only from emailing one back to myself and checking its size.

  • Since upgrade of aperture, my photos from a year ago are not in library.  On time machine, they are there, but I cant transfer them to todays aperture library because it says the old version is not supported.  Please help!!

Since the upgrade of Aperture, my photos from a year ago are not showing up.  When I go to time machine, they show up in the library, but I cant transfer them to my todays aperture because it says the old program needs to be updated.  How do I get my pics from a year ago transferred to todays Aperture?  Please help!!!!

You will be restoring the old Aperture library from TM, having it on the Desktop is fine.
Once the restore is finished you will have the old Aperture library in that folder. Now you want to open this library by double clicking it (the library). This will open Aperture on it and Aperture will  tell you the library needs to be upgraded. Let Aperture upgrade the library.
Once the Library is upgraded to the latest version of Aperture you can do want you want with it. Once you have gotten to this point if you still need help post back.

  • Will I lose photos when I upgrade to maverick

Will I lose photos when I upgrade iPhoto to maverick

    No. But backup everything first.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Hi, my sony xperia z1s loses photos whenever i take them? please help on how to resolve this because its frustrating taking a whole bunch of photos for them to just disappear in the wind later on!!

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
Even if they are not displayed on the phone they may still be there. I would advise connecting to a PC and seeing if the files themselves still exisit.

  • Difference between iPhoto and Aperture and photo storage

I'm thinking about upgrading from iPhoto to Aperture but I'm a little confused about the differences in the way photo edits are handled. The iPhoto to Aperture page says that Aperture stores photo changes in one photo rather than duplicating them, therefore taking up less space. BUT they also use a unified shared library. So how is it possible for Aperture to handle edits differently if the library is now shared between the two applications?

Aperture may save you some space if you choose not to generate previews, but then you won't be able to integrate with other apps.
As Terence Devlin says. But being able to manage the Previews is quite a space saver. In Aperture you can selectively generate previews only for the photos that you want to share with other applications, and you can specify the size and quality of the previews you want. iPhoto on the other hand will always create previews for all photos, and all in very high quality. In Aperture I delete previews for redundant photos and keep the previews only for my highest ratest photos that I am likely to share with other applications and want to use as a screensaver or slideshow.
If you share your photo library between Aperture and iPhoto and edit a photo in iPhoto, then iPhoto will add a preview for this photo, even if you disabled previews in Aperture.

  • Aperture duplicating photo's

Has anyone else noticed Aperture duplicating photo's?
I imported about 1000 from a digital camera card earlier today and I'm just going through them now and can see a number of duplications (between 3 and 7 copies of each of the images that have been duplicated) all with the same name. I'm going through deleting them manually at the moment, is there a way to get it to check and delete duplications automatically? How do I stop it from doing it in the future as well?

I would highly recommend to never use that command -- just simply eject and then reformat the card in the camera.
Plus, if something did not get imported correctly, your one and only source to reimport has been wiped. Recommended workflow is to import, check the results, backup.  Only then should you delete the contents of the card.

  • Aperture loses focus, even in other programs

I developed a new problem over the past week or so. I'll be typing along in any program when it suddenly loses focus. I can click to re-establish but, once it starts. it happens every 10-15 seconds. I think I've isolated the issue to Aperture. Once I quit Aperture, the problem seems to stop. When I'm using Aperture, it's begun acting strangely: multiple clicks required to select photos, shift-click to get a range doesn't always work, right-click menus pop up then disappear or don't contain all items expected (e.g., Export only shows "Project as new library" as a sub).
I'm up to date on Yosemite (10.10.1) and Aperture (3.6 500021000000000.3 RAW 6.02/Build 768.6), and I'm struggling to key the start of this phenomenon to any particular update (assuming Aperture is winding down and Photos will come soon?) I haven't tried to reinstall Aperture, although I did have a repair situation a couple of weeks ago when I had a white screen of death in OS X.
Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions beyond repair/rebuild? I've been exporting originals for a while with the expectation of changes ahead and will continue with that as best I can...

So, I had some time (and accumulated frustration) to check on this further, with no positive results.
I thought I might need to repair or rebuild my Aperture database. I tried following the instructions in the Help file (Control-Command-Click on Aperture database in Finder) but that did not yield the dialog to repair/rebuild, just launched Aperture.
I used Activity Monitor to try to see what was running, and I seem to get a process called "ReportCrash" that cycles into the CPU use column every time the focus changes. But, I haven't gotten the typical "Program has crashed. Do you want to send a report?" dialog. It happens every 3-10 seconds, and only happens when Aperture is open. I haven't tried reinstalling Aperture yet because I haven't had a chance to dig out installation disk stuff.
I may try to cross-post this to a Yosemite forum to see if it's just coincidence that it happens when Aperture is running.
Maybe it's just life telling me to ante up for LightRoom...

  • An Aperture 3 "Photo Preview" explanation appreciated.

As I have plenty of free disk storage I would like to set “Photo Preview” to yield the best possible quality and size. (The resolution of my monitor is 1260 X 1440)
I would appreciate an explanation of the choices of the Fit Within figures such as “Don’t limit”, “Fit within 2560 X 2560”, Fit within 1920 X 1920” etc.
My aim is to show my photos onscreen to their best advantage as well as sometimes using them for emailing to friends or creating slide shows for emailing to friends.
Are my current settings right for my purposes?

    Cliff

Hi Cliff.  Sounds like you got this figured out already  .
The Preview file that Aperture creates and keeps is a JPG rendering of the Image.  In general it is a big thumbnail.   The Preview is used:
    - as a placeholder while the Original+Version is rendered (this is done "live" -- Aperture does not keep these files from session to session).
    - when in in Quick Preview mode (the Preview is used in place of the fully-rendered Image in order to speed processing when culling or working with metadata).
    - when you drag an Image from Aperture to another program.
    - when the Originals are off-line (e.g.: if you have put your Image's Originals on an external drive and that drive is not mounted).
    - in Slideshows (but if you create a Slideshow and the Previews don't exist, Aperture will create them).
    - and probably a few I forgot.
The Preview can also be used as a some insurance against total loss:  if you lose your Image's Originals but still have the full Library, the Library will have the Previews.
You should set your Preview size (and existence) based on your needs.  I keep Previews of every Image, at the resolution of my monitor, at compression level 10.  If you truly want "best quality" and maximum size, you should set yours to "Don't limit" and "12".  The difference between 12 and 10 is going to be a lot of bytes, and probably no perceptible change in quality.  The size you select is straight-forward, with a direct relationship between size and storage requirements.
Note that you can delete and re-render Previews at any time.  I have found it much easier to "set it and forget it" -- but I am willing to provide the storage space needed and prefer the performance of a Library with a full set of Previews.
I suspect you've see it, but the User Manual page on Previews is here.
