Aperture 3 or Photoshop Elements (Mac) ?

Hi.
I'm 17, and I'm a budding photographer... I was just wondering, what would be the best programme for editing photos (simply) ? - Aperture 3 or PhotoShop Elements?
I know Photoshop would probably be best, but I can't afford £600/£700 for a disc or however much it is!
Cheers!

Hi scottalter,
They are different categories of programs. Comparing them isn't meaningful. PhotoShop (and Elements) is a pixel-level editor. Aperture is a digital asset manager, with some photo editing (not pixel editing) built in. Aperture is akin to Lightroom.
The photo editing means that you start with something (your original photo), apply a change to it (adjust brightness for example) and end up with a different picture. You can only modify your photos in existing, predefined ways. PhotoShop allows you to add things to your photo that it didn't start with.
That being said, Aperture may still be the tool for you. Its management is great, and there are a lot of adjustments that are probably exactly what you are looking for.
If you can express what it is you are looking for, we members of the forum can probably tell you if Aperture is going to do it or not.

  • How do I import Aperture Library into Photoshop Elements 12?

New to Photoshop Elements 12.How do I import Aperture Library into Photoshop Elements 12?

You would really need to export copies from the Aperture database, to folders on your hard drive and then import them into Organizer.
Or continue with Aperture (don’t use Organizer) and simply send photos to the Elements Editing app as required.

  • When I external edit an aperture photo using Photoshop Elements 9 and then get out, the changes are not reflected in Aperture when I return - this used to work for me but doesn't seem to have for some time - help please?

Have used Aperture for some time - at some point this stopped working - not sure when
    workflow:
click photo and elect to use the external editor (Photoshop Elements 9)
Copy of the photo is created in Aperture with the "O" badge and I am rolled out to Photoshop
Have to change the type to 8-bit in Photoshop to start making changes
When done and I exit I am prompted to save the photo
On returning to Aperture however the "O" badged photo does not get updated/reflect my changes
    Other Things:
I can find a changed photo sitting in the Aperture Library using finder or Photoshop itself - so I know changes have been made a new file saved (TIFF).
I am wondering if I am missing some (new) preference such that the changes are not proerly being saved for re-display/storage in the Aperture Library
I am running Lion OSX at the moment but the behaviour was the same under Snow Lepoard versions.
Current version of Aperture is 3.1.3, Elements is 9.0
    Any help/suggestions greatfully received

Try using psd.  Some rerports indicate some confustion between the apps with TIFF.  See:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15921933#15921933
I cannot confirm, nor test, since I use PS CS5, and not Elements.

  • Problem with editing Aperture photos with Photoshop Elements 10

When I try to edit with Photoshop Elements 10, Aperture makes a tiff file, starts Photoshop Elements 10 and get to a screen where I have a choice between "editing" or "managing" files.  I select editing but when i finally get the editing screen there is no photo to edit.  Process worked fine in Elements 9 and Aperture 3.1. Anybody been able to roundtrip with Aperture 3.2.1 and Photoshop Elements 10?

(Aperture 3 and PSE 10; Lion; using Referenced files in Aperture)
I tried Barbara's recommended method and PSE now opens with the image displayed and accepts edits.  However, when I save the adjusted image, what I get in Aperture is a TIFF file of that name but with no edits displayed.
When I go to the directory in which the referenced files are located, the adjusted file exists and I can view it.
So, (at least as I have things configured), when accessing PSE from Aperture I am able to make adjustments and save the adjusted file, but the adjusted file does not display in Aperture.
Is anyone having success with Barbara's method using referenced files?
I hope it is not necessary to do a separate import to get the adjusted file to display in Aperture - which would make PSE totally impractical for use.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Using iPhoto, Aperture 3 and Photoshop Elements 9 together...

    Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded from iPhoto to Aperture. It does almost everything I need but there are some much more advanced editing tools in Photoshop Elements that I need occasionally and also I like to be able to quickly create attractive template based e-mails using iPhoto, so I need all three apps.
Currently I have my photo library in Aperture 3 but it's really clunky to create attractive photo emails using iPhoto because I have to click 'Show Aperture Library', which is very difficult to navigate and is pretty much unusable. My next attempt is going to be to see whether I keep all my pictures in an iPhoto library and then browse and edit them in Aperture and Photoshop Elements.
Has anyone got any tips on this topic?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi Ernie,
Thanks for your post. I will try to explain in a little more detail what the problem I'm having is. If I want to create an iPhoto picture template e-mail, say a postcard, then I select File/Show Aperture Library. A browser window pops up. If I browse to 'Projects' then the previews of each project are huge - about 6 fit on a screen with the window maximised. I can't find a way of zooming out in order that I can browse the hundreds of projects in my Aperture library. Is there a way of doing this? Also, I can't seem to control the sort order. The options in View/Sort Order seem to sort the iPhoto album, not the Aperture library browser.
If I select Photos from the navigation tree then I get previews of all my 13'000 pictures and about 100 fit on the screen. Again, I don't seem to be able to zoom in/out nor control the sort order.
What surprised me this morning is that I finally deleted my old iPhoto library and then opened iPhoto to see how it would react. I selected whatever the default was (forgot already!) and now I see my iPhoto library as it was before I deleted it. However, I can't find the library in my Pictures folder. Could it be that iPhoto is reading it from the trash can??
Finally - is there a way of adding pictures to my posts in this forum? Perhaps I could illustrate the views i'm getting in iPhoto's Aperture library browser.
    Yours,
    Jim

  • Loading files from Aperture 3 into Photoshop Elements 9

I am using an iMac with both Aperture and Photoshop Elements 9 loaded.  My camera loads the images into Aperture.  I select teh option to Edit with Photoshop Elements; Elements opens but the screen in blank.  A PSD file is created in Aperture which I then have to export and manually load into Elements I have tried resetting the colour picker to Apple in Elements Preferences; I have tried resetting the options in Aperture to 9-bit, tried 16-bit, ensure the export option is PSD.  Nothing works.  Any ideas?

Do you mean they are still on the CD/DVD and you want to export them directly from CD/DVD?
That's not possible since the CD/DVD is not writeable. You have to move the photos to your hard drive first.

  • Aperture 2 and Photoshop Elements 6

I'm wondering how Photoshop Elements 6 and Aperture 2 play together.
I'm considering purchasing PSE 6 to do some layer editing. I use Aperture 2 for photo organization, minor edits, printing, emailing, web publishing, etc. So Layers and some of the filters are really the only aspects that I'm interested in in PSE.
I demoed PSE 6 prior to getting Aperture, so now it will not let me re-trial it to determine how Aperture and PSE 6 interact together. I understand the gist of external editing with Aperture, so I'm specifically wondering about PSE. Anyone have problems or complaints? Is it a relatively smooth transition out of Aperture and back in from PSE? I've searched the forum and have not found anything to set off any warning bells for me... Thanks for your answers.
I did test Pixelmator, but it is just not "there" yet for me.
    Thanks

You first have to set Elements as your external editor under Preferences -> Exports in Aperture. I'm exporting as regular tiff (not 16 bit), but I too would be interested in an answer on why tiff is better than psd. as stated earlier in this thread) You then export either by right clicking the photo you want to edit-> Edit with -> Elements (should be top on the list). Or I now use the keyboard shortcut to export: commandshiftO.
Elements then opens the image. I have had no problem then editing and command+S saving an image back into Aperture. The edited image will be next to the original and have a double-circle bullseye in the corner. Any further exports into Elements on that image are done on that same file, that is, no further versions are made as was done the first time.
good luck. And I am very impressed with the smooth interaction between Aperture and Elements. And am enjoying playing around with the power of Elements, although most of my basic edits will still be done in Aperture.

  • Photoshop elements mac, newbie questions for webshop

    Hello all,
My name is Jelle and i have photoshop elements for mac, which i mostly use to create banners, headers and backgrounds for my website www.dagelijkseluxe.nl.
Though this is my question, i think there are a lot of people like me, bumping in the same problems. Maybe it's an idea to have a webshop webinar someday (or i missed it) for some basic functions mostly used for websites. Like easy banner creation, background adjustments for sites and products, best product presentation, etc.
Even though i mostly use the guided editing, i sometimes venture off and try to use the full editor. Now, this must be too easy for most of you powerusers, but the background of the webshop is still a bit to dark to my liking. However i feel i have reached all i can do with the different sliders presented in the guided tour.
Is there an easy way to "mistify" the background or any photo for that matter?
I also save the files as PNG as per recommendation from the sitebuilder. what's the difference with interlaced and non interlaced saving.
Thank you in advance for your time!
    Kind regards,
    Jelle Dingemans

    You could use:
Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur
That should mystify or blur your image.
Interlaced is a better method for displaying mainly large images on monitors - but you get a slightly larger file. Small images tend to load very quickly so non-interlaced will keep the file size down.

  • Photoshop elements mac to pc

I have recently downloaded photoshop elements 11 to my mac book pro.
I now need to download this to my windows pc as photos I have edited via the software on the mac will not open on my PC
Do I have to pay again for the pc version or can I simply amend my existing version in my download history to pc/ windows?
If I cannot amend the existing download to pc then how can I open the edited photos without photoshop?
    Thanks for your help

You've downloaded the .dmg file (for Mac) and successfully installed and activated on your Mac.
You can use the same serial number to activate the software on your PC (since the PSE license is multi-platform).
However, you must first download and run the .exe file to your PC (since PCs cannot read ".dmg" files written for Mac OSX).
On your PC, download the PSE11 installer for PC from

  • Just went to MacBook Pro from a Dell PC. Is Aperture 3 like Photoshop Elements?

Just went to a MacBookPro from a Dell PC. Have used Photoshop Elements for a long time. Does Aperture 3 operate like Photoshop Elements? Which does the best job of photograp editing?

well, like Terence said above, Elements is a pixel-level editor.  you have brush tools, text tools, erasers, etc.  you can manipulate the image on a pixel-by-pixel basis.  you can draw shapes on top of the photo, add text, and on and on.
there are no tools for doing that sort of thing in Aperture.  Aperture is a tool that's main strength comes in organizing photos into projects and albums. you can add keywords, edit metadata like copyright fields, and rank them with 0-5 stars.  from there you can make global adjustments like contrast, brightness, and saturation to an image.  you can even easily copy a set of preferred adjustments onto an entire selection of photos, easing the work of giving an entire album a certain look.  many of the adjustments can be masked as well, so that the adjustment only applies to certain areas of the image (making the sky darker in a landscape, for instance).
but if you wanted to add a red border to a photo you can't do that.  want to add some text with a fancy outline and a drop shadow?  no dice.
however, if you really want to do something like that to a given photo within Aperture, you can choose edit the photo with Photoshop Elements.  Aperture makes a new version of the file and opens it in Photoshop Elements.  From there you can make your changes, add text, borders, brush strokes, composite in another photo, etc.  then save your new file and within the Aperture library, you now have two versions of that file.

  • Aperture vs. Photoshop Elements 4.0

Hi, I am a beginning photographer and I want an beginning piece of photo editing software. Does anyone have any suggestions. For example, how would you Aperture users compare Aperture to Photoshop Elements 4.0. If it helps I'm using a Canon Rebel XTi.

They are totally different apps but with a small amount of overlap.
You need (inexpensive) Photoshop Elements for individual image editing. PE is poor for management of batches of images.
Aperture and Adobe's Lightroom are (a bit more expensive) apps for the management of batches of captured digital images. You will want one of them (here we prefer Aperture) as you get into shooting substantial batches of DSLR captures. Aperture will deal with the editing issues of 98% of your images, but you definitely want PE for the 2% which will likely include your best shots.

  • Downloading a Photoshop Elements Mac trial - download/install does not start

I am attempting to download Elements 10 trial on a Mac Book Pro.  I have turned off my pop up blockers, firewalls, third party blockers, etc...  I downloaded the assistant and once it installs nothing happens.  It disappears out of the dock without downloading Elements.  I tried to download AIR as well as it stated that it may need that downloaded before the assistant could work.  Same thing happened.
    Thank you,

Invalid Checksum error appears if the download got corrupt which could be due to a bad or slow internet connection.
You could try temporarily disabling Error Checking. See http://forums.adobe.com/message/4370247#4370247 to see out how.
If that does not resolve the issue, I woudl recommend using a different internet connection to download again..

  • The round trip between Aperture and Adobe Photoshop elements is not cooperating  I have performed all the suggestions.  Any others?  Not sure about saving.

i tried all the suggestions on line.  none of them are working.  Any other suggestions?

i tried all the suggestions on line.  none of them are working.  Any other suggestions?
    Marianne,
how can we possibly answer that? Nobody will know "all the suggestions online". So how are we to know, what you already tried?
What exactly is not working with your round trip? And what did you try already?
    What is your Aperture version?

  • Photoshop elements 11 for mac osx

Did purchase ph. el. 11 via Amazon.com; 1st install did not work; failed to intialize when installing; called customer service and got connected with India and they tried to help but not very well; my suggestion "we" try to install a fresh copy from adobe and "we" did; to no avail, the download seems to be fine but when half trough the install intialization it stops and recommends to install the Adobe Advisor and I did; in running the advisor it does not recognaize the files I downloaded and thus can not trouble shoot the problem.  I am now at the point of trowing this software out the window and ask for a refund.  PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ulfkdn are you receiving any specific error messages?  You can check your installation logs for error by following the steps listed at Troubleshoot install using logs | Element - http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/troubleshoot-install-using-logs-elements.html.
You may also want to review the steps listed in Troubleshoot installation | Photoshop Elements | Mac OS - http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/troubleshoot-installation-photoshop-elements- mac.html.  I would recommend first looking in your installation logs for an applicable error first as it may allow you to determine the exact error, and subsequent failure, which is preventing the installation process from completing.

  • Cannot edit Aperture 3 photo in Photoshop elements 10

When I want to edit a photo in Aperture 3 through Photoshop Elements 10, nothing happens.  The photo does not show up.  It used to work before.

That it never worked right is important to know  .
Reset the external editor selection in Aperture following the instructions at the link I posted above.
You should be able to right-click an Image, select "Edit with NamedEditor", edit the copy of your Image that Aperture creates and sends to the external editor, close your file in the editor (do not "Save As"), and end up back in Aperture with your original Image next to your selected duplicated-and-edited Image.
    Do you?
