Aperture 3 runs slow, should I split my library into more projects?
Aperture 3.4.5 is running very slow on my 2x 2.4 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon 5.1 Mac Pro. My Aperture library is 609 GB and I have it on a internal HD with 2.94 TB of room available. I have been using Aperture since it first came out but I have only made 7 Projects in all that time. I just add additional folders and albums inside of those 7 Projects. I'm looking for a way to speed up Aperture because it has slowed down to a crawl, for example, when selecting more than a few images everything stops and I get a spinning beach ball for up to a minute. This is new behavior for Aperture. I have tried all of the recommended fixes such as repair permissions, repair database and finally, I tried rebuild database. None of these has helped.
Somewhere I read that you needed to repair the database before you installed Aperture 3.0. I did not do this. That is the only thing I can think of that could be a cause of this, my hardware is more than adequate to use Aperture. I need suggestions...

I am concerned about that. Why only a few projects? Your projects must have more than several thousand images each. I found, that Aperture is slower, if the projects are very large and if I have many smart albums. Aperture becomes more responsive, if I split the projects and group the split projects inside a folder.

How full is your system drive? You only mention the space available on your second drive, not on your system drive.
When did this slowness start? After you imported new images or installed other software?

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?
iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.

Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)

You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

Aperture and iPhoto should use the same library
Hi all,
It seems that there is a lot of conversation about moving photos between Aperture and iPhoto. For example, some like iPhotos slideshow better but still require Apertures adjustment options. Still others have tried, to no avail, to use Aperture as iPhoto's external editor.
Personally, I have a large iPhoto library with most photos tagged with keywords. I have just started using Aperture and am yet to decide if its extra features are useful for a novice photographer like myself. Other than the price, I see no reason not to use Aperture instead of iPhoto but I would want to import my entire iPhoto library into Aperture.
My question, however, is why we need to 'import' from one app to the other. Without understanding how the aperture / iphoto databases work, I would assume there is no fundamental reason why Aperture could not simply open an existing iPhoto library and visa versa. They both support RAW, keywords, books etc. And while I am sure there are some deviations in the databases, surely each app could simply ignore the features it does not understand.
Is this something that anyone else has considered or think would be good. I would imagine that the easier it is for customers to upgrade from iPhoto to Aperture the better. Does Apple plan on supporting this in the future or is the import option 'good enough'.

Simply set the Preferences to 'Share Previews with iLife Applications' in Aperture. Then go to iPhoto -> File -> Show Aperture Library. A media browser will open and you can drag the pics from the Browser to the iPhoto Window. Note: You're getting the Aperture Previews not Masters. Note too that if you set iPhoto to Referenced mode (iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced) then you won't use double the disk space.
+Remember though, you are not accessing the Aperture Library. If you make changes in the Aperture Library (Re-edit the shots) after bringing pics to iPhoto, those changes are not reflected in iPhoto.+
This is what William means when he says the iPhoto does not access the Aperture Library.

2010 Macbook pro is running slow in Mavericks. Do I need more than 4gb ram?
My late 2010 13" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro is running slow since upgrading to Mavericks. I currently only have 4gb of ram. When I boot up It takes quite awhile (nearly 5 minutes or more) before the system is usable. Or it takes almost as long to switch to another user. Once I let it sit, it runs fine. I'm mostly using Safari and possibly MS Word at any given time. I looked at the Activity monitor and I believe I'm using aboiut 3.6 - 3.9gb of physical memory and over 4gb of virtual memory. Swap is using 0 at all times.
Do I need more RAM? Wipe my drive and do a fresh install? I'm reluctant to do the latter, because I don't want to have to reinstall all of my apps (even witha TM backup).

Split iPhoto Library into two?
If one has an iPhoto Library that is too large to burn to a CD (or DVD), is it possible to split the iPhoto Library into two libraries?
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4)I used this method of duplicating the library, renaming, and then deleting appropriate rolls from the two resulting libraries. After doing so, however, my iPhoto applicaton developed some nasty quirks. First, it would not let me rename my rolls. Secondly, it would on occasion unespectedly quit. I do not know if this was a result of my duplicating/splitting libraries, or just bad karma. I tried correcting it by copying back my original iPhoto library from a backup volume, with no results. I repaired permissions, repaired disk, and ran DiskWarrior with no results. Finally, I booted from a cloned drive, checked that iPhoto worked properly on my clone, and then copied the iPhoto library from the clone to my main hard drive, and all was well. So, now I have a working iPhoto, but am stuck with my original large library. As I said, this may have just been an unpleasant coincidence, but I am afraid to attempt to split the library again.

how can i split a library.. my wife and i used to share it, but now we have our own id's.. i want my music and apps off of hers so that i can sync my phone and only my music and apps will "come over"
how do i share then? can she upload music if we share it somehow?

i am also having the same problems now with IPhoto, she has all of her/our pics in my IPhoto library.
I have told her that now i have bought her the Ipad she would have to log into her user, the only thing is there is no music in her itunes account nor photos in her I Photo library, i have spent all day trying to find a way to "share" but no luck,
Please help i`m going mad!

Crystal report - how to split a field into more fields
Hello,
I`m new to Crystal reports and I`ve got a trouble. I have field which contains an address - street, city, zip code. The example is:
STEHLIKOVA 977 165 00 PRAHA 620 - SUCHDOL 165 00.
What I need to achieve is to split this string into three separated fields. I`ve trouhg a couple of forums but haven`t been able to find a proper answer. The problem is that the addresses differ so I can`t use an absolute defining of a start position. Looking at the DB (HEXA code) the parts in the string are divided by two dots:
STEHLIKOVA 977..165 00 PRAHA 620 - SUCHDOL..165 00
I`ve been able to work out this solution:
stringVar array x := split({cparty.STREET_ADD},"..");
Local numberVar i;
Local stringVar outputString := "";
For i:=1 to Count(x) do
outputString := outputString + x[i] + Chr(10)
outputString;
It splits the string into three rows:
STEHLIKOVA 977
165 00 PRAHA 620 - SUCHDOL
165 00
And I don`t know how to find the end of each row so to be able to separate the strings and report them as three different fields.
Would be anyone so kind and help me out with this?

Actually using a for loop is not necessary here. All you need to do is to add several formula fields: one for street, one for city and one for zipcode. In @street field you add formula:
stringVar array x := split({cparty.STREET_ADD},Chr(13));
x[1];
Then you drag such formula field to details section of your report and watch preview to check if everything looks alright. Repeat for every formula field that you'd like see in your report.
In @city you add almost identical formula but you change index, i. e. instead of x[1] you need to use x[2]. Then for @zip x[3].
You may need to check if your address has all three parts - for example if you want to use formula in the second part of your address field you may need check first if there are at least two parts after split:
stringVar array := split({cparty.STREET_ADD},Chr(13));
numbervar c;
c := count(x);
if 2 <= c then
x[c];
Var 'c' is used to store the number of elements in array after split. Then I'd like to check if the part (second) actually exists. So I try to check if number of part that I want to refer to is not bigger than the number of elements in array after split (here stored in var 'c').
Actually the code presented above is not enough since you have no guarantee that you'll always get address structured in the very same way. For example in demo PL database I have zip code and city in the same row after split with Chr(13) as delimiter.
You'll need to experiment or ask someone to prepare correctly structured data coming from B1 to your report.

When importing my video from the event library to the project library, it's zooming in and
narrowing the width of my footage. How do I stop this from happening?In the project, double-click on the clip to open the Clip Inspector. In the Clip tab you will see an item about two thirds down labelled "Stabilization". If checked, uncheck the box "Smooth clip motion".
Stabilizing clips causes a zoomed in effect, with the extent of the zoom dependent upon how shaky the footage is. There is a slider beneath the check-box labelled "Maximum Zoom" - this can be draggged back and forth to adjust the zoom effect if desired, once the clip has been stabilized.
You may have chosen to analyze clips for stabilization when importing to iMovie (that's a choice provided by iMovie upon import). If so, it's best to turn off an option in iMovie's preferences. Go to this from the iMovie menu item iMovie>Preferences. Click on the Browser tab and deselect (uncheck) the box labelled "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed".
I prefer to import clips without analyzing, as this speeds up the import process. Afterwards, in the Event you can check for any overly shaky clips, then analyze them in the Inspector. If necessary, once dropped into a Project, you can stabilize them as desired. You can also stabilize clips directly in the Project without having to first analyze them in the Event.

I have entirely too many pictures in one PSE6 catalog. Can I split this current catalog into more than one catalog? If so, what is the easiest way to do so? Thank you.
How many photos do you have? PSE can handle a very large number, if you have then well organised.

Aperture running slow on my macbook Pro
Hi,
I have a 2.0 GHZ macbook Pro with 2G of ram and a 7200RPM hard drive. Processing runs smoothly when I first start Aperture, but gradually, the computer starts to slow down (the CPU gauge jumps), and the computer actually pauses for several seconds. It gets to the points that the changes are no longer in real-time, that is, when I adjust the saturation (or make curve adjustments), I have wait several seconds before the changes make it to screen. There are no other programs running while Aperture is running, and the files are RAW files from my Nikon D200.This is my experience as well. Aperture is somewhat snappy at first then, over time, slows down and becomes very sluggish.
I'm currently using "only" 1 GB of ram and am considering adding a second gig. But your experience seems to indicate that 2 GB of ram does not resolve the situation.
What file sizes are you working with?
I'm primarily working with file sizes of 60 to 70 MB.
Wondering if Aperture, in general, has trouble handling larger file sizes.

Your Mac does not need an anti virus program because the Mac os does not get viruses. If you want to check for malware and trojens use ClamXav.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left? -
Aperture running slow with lion
Ever since I installed Lion, Aperture is going at a snail's pace..Is there an Aperture upgrade that will fix this?
The solution was to press and hold the option and command keys while starting Aperture, and then selecting Repair Permissions. This seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks.

So I bought a computer quite a while ago, exactly 5 years ago to be exact. I am a gamer but I also use this for school work. It takes forever to turn on and load any application. I have tried cleaning the hard drive and so many other things!
I'm desperate at this point.

What design to split bank transactions into more detail? (in budget database)
Current Design:
* I have a budget/finance tracking database I’m building
* It has a BANK_TRANSACTIONS table where I load in transactions from various bank accounts
* It there has an ALLOCATIONS table to allocation a bank transaction to a business area (e.g. allocate the phone bill item 50% to “personal” and 50% to “work"
Question: What would be the best database design approach to be able to breakout a bank transaction into smaller items? For example there may have been really two (2) items purchased and turn up in a single bank account. I still want
to maintain the correctness of imported bank transactions themselves.
For example some ideas that come to mind:
a) add new detailed transactions to BANK_TRANSACTIONS for the detail, with a new column “REPLACED” so the the original bank transaction is there but can be marked as “replaced” so it doesn’t get used in queries/reports. Then another RELATIONS table to
relate the new detailed record to the parent original bank transactions. Not sure if this would be considered good design or not
b) have a separate table for BUSINESS_TRANSACTIONS so the detailed transaction go here. But then 95% of the items in the BANK_TRANSACTIONS would just need to be duplicated in the BUSINESS_TRANSACTION table??
Other ideas???
In terms of usage/output would like have the concept of being able to show:
a) maintain valid true bank transactions that are valid, as it is from there you can see your overall bank balance (across multiple accounts) across time,
b) in terms of reporting for expense categories / taxable items etc need the detailed BUSINESS_TRANSACTION so to speak...Personally I would create a transaction header table that would hold the date and total amount of the transaction and any other header data and a detail table for the detail.

I imported a video clip into FCE that is standard depth 4:3 but it shows as 16:9 in the canvas viewer. Why? Since im not capturing video does it matter what settings that i have selected for the sequence settings?
