Aperture 3 slow to import

Why is Aperture 3 so slow to import! It can take five minutes to recognise just a few images on the Desktop and the fan whirls. This must be a bug!

Has anyone successfully migrated back to Aperture 2? Or would be going to Lightroom 2 be easier. I have by this point wasted too much of my life on Aperture 3. I have been using Aperture 3 on both Leopard then Snow Leopard on a very high-end Mac configuration (over 10 TB disk, for example) and I've seen it take 30 minutes to import 3 images from an iPhone. And that's not unusual – over the past few weeks I've grown to expect that. Also, is it just me or is Faces terrible at differentiating faces? It's great at figuring out what a face is, but it makes ridiculous guesses about whose face it is. It doesn't seem to work nearly as well as iPhoto when it first got face recognition technology. I think Apple needed to publicly beta-test AP3 like Adobe has done with each LR release. AP3 is completely pathetic and disappointing. Any professional user would be out of business by now.

  • Aperture slow import

I have a strange problem that has just appeared in Aperture V3. Everything works fine until i try to import pictures from my Memory card. The program just goes very slow and import takes ages, its a full min before i can even see the card etc. I get the spinning ball of death for about 35 seconds then drives etc start to appear on the left side. Once the pictures have imported then they take an age to process this never used to do this. Up until i put the card into the card reader aperture runs a dream with zero problems. I have rebuilt the library and the pictures do scroll a little better and the thumbnails appear faster. Can anybody help with this problem as it never used to do it.

I would suggest amending your workflow,
    1. Insert your card
    2. Copy the images from the card to a HDD
    3. Eject the card, (leaving images on there!)
    4. Import into Aperture
    5. Backup
    6. Reformat card in camera
I Found switching to this workflow speed the process dramatically and has a number of benefits with regard to image file integrity.

  • Lightroom 5 is quite slow in importing photos

Lightroom 5 is quite slow in importing photos from a memory card connected to a reader using USB 3.0! After installing LR5, I didn't change any default settings. Interestingly, this wasn't found in beta testing. LR4 was what I call quick or snappy. Because of LR5's slow performance, I went back to LR4 after paying for the Cloud subscription.
With substantial difficulty and after some time passed, I eventually was able to speak to Support which offered no fix for this issue. I hope that it can be resolved soon.

Selecting the Import from below in Files does help speed up the start of the Import as mentioned in the thread you referred to but is still maybe three or so times slower than in LR4. At least it makes using LR5 more bearable.
    Thanks.

  • Slow cd import with imac 24 vs dual G5

my new imac 24 is much slower at importing cd's (converting to mp3 at 192) than my G5... something like 7-8x with the imac vs 18-20x with the G5... ???
is this typical for your results or do I have a bum setting???
    stephen

    bump... anyone?
the same cd with the same import settings: (ripped with iTunes to MP3 at 192)
    iBook 1.07 G4 5-10x
    power mac dual 1.8 G5 18-22x
    iMac 2.16 24" 7-10x
I really expected more out of the new intel core 2 here... little better than my iBook G4, and the power mac dual G5 is twice as fast...

  • My iPhone 4s is super slow to import photos into iPhoto???

As said in the title my iphone is extremely slow to import photos to iphoto and keeps importing the same photos even though they are already in iPhoto??? Whats going on?? Anyone know a fix to this??

I would expect nothing less. even importing videos from my standards camera takes a while...thats not the issue here.
importing 50 Photos can take 10 minutes with the iPhone. Meanwhile the same number of photos from a standard camera would take less than a minute.
Its either a problem with the iphone and slow transfer through the dock connector, or somethings up with how iPhoto imports from the iPhone.

  • Aperture fails to import albums from iPhoto

I have been using the combination iPhoto/Photoshop for many years. For some time I have considered either Aperture of Lightroom. With the chopped price and supposedly improved interface with the new version, I decided to buy it today. So far it looks like a big mistake! One major reason for choosing Aperture rather than Lightroom was Apertures's advertised smooth import of the iPhoto library, and to import albums in iPhoto. I have spent a lot of time over several years to find a good system of album organization in iPhoto. It was consequently a big disappointment to discover that Aperture failed to import most of my some 30 albums and my slideshows from iPhoto. I have searched both the manual and help to find out how I can get my album organization of some 20 000 pictures into Aperture, but so far without success. Can anyone give me a clue. Both regular albums as well as smart albums are missing. I cannot figure out how I so totally have misunderstood what Aperture is capable of.

There is always local issues involved. No two Macs are alike. Different files, temporary files, plug-ins etc. can and do cause problems. When software updates and upgrades are created, the developer, in this case Apple, need to test the software in different environments. Developers are pushed by steadily shorter deadlines, at the same time applications are also steadily becoming more complex. When I am critical to Apple, it is because there are only Apple applications involved in my case, on a brand new (2 weeks old newest version of MacBook Pro), and the very same issue has happened to too many others. Just take a look at Apple discussions. I have used iPhoto since it was launched the first time, and I have only experienced problems a couple of times before. I am not saying that the problem is iPhoto or Aperture alone, it is the two of them which do not handle the integration. Keep in mind also that most Aperture users are different than the average Mac user in that they work a lot with photo files. This is the environment that Apple has to take into account when launching upgrades and updates.

  • Aperture crash during imports

Having some import problems with Aperture and would be grateful for advice.
Aperture works fine except at import from SD cards. The photos import just fine and then I get a message asking if I want to delete the imported images from the SD card and eject the card. This is where the crash happens. Aperture quits, the images are not deleted from the card and the card is not ejected. This happens with all my SD cards. I have reformated the cards but this hasn't helped.
Any advice or information gratefully received.

There are several reports recently on Aperture crashing after importing images, when the option "delete images" is chosen.
Send a bug report to Apple, when the crash occurs, and - for the time being - refrain from deleting the images from the card this way, until this bug has been fixed. It is much safer anyway, to delete the images in the camera and not to let applications delete from the card and to wait with deleting from the card, until you have checked that the images imported correctly.

Aperture isn't importing videos from iPhone, only photos. I've tried plugged in and over wifi. Help?

How did you transfer the photos from your other iPhone? If you did it by importing them from the old phone to a computer and then used iTunes to sync them back to the new phone, then you would delete them by syncing again using iTunes but this time change the selection of which photos are to be synced. Each time you sync using iTunes, it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

Only my computer hard drive is and I want to import from an external drive.  I have always been able to until I updated to Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite.
I had the same problem. On the folders on the drive with the Aperture library did show in the Import panel. After I clicked the computer icon in the upper left corner of the Import panel, suddenly all drives appeared.
You can also try to drag the folder you want to import into the Import panel, to point the file chooser to the drive.

    Galdaplh,
What do you mean by "reverting to photo"?  "Revert" is not a function in Aperture so you must be talking about something else.
If you just performed the import of that many photos, Aperture will take some time to generate thumbnails.  You can see if it is doing this sort of thing by {Command}-{Shift}-0 to show the Activity window.
Once Aperture generates all its thumbnails, you will have nearly instantaneous access to much, much better thumbnails than Aperture uses immediately after importing photos.

  • Aperture Crashes While importing iPhoto 11

    Hi all,
I hope someone can help as I'm getting desperate. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple tech support to no avail.
I have an iPhoto library of 45K photos that I am attempting to import to Aperture 3. However, Aperture repeatedly crashes before completing the import. This happens at different times in the import (sometimes after importing 100 or so events, other times >300 events, but it never makes it to the end.
So far, I have tried the following (each time into a new Aperture Library):
    1. Duplicated and rebuilt the iPhoto library with command-option (crashed).
    2. Shift opened Aperture to disable background processing (still crashed).
    3. I tried importing a few events at a time, but with 45K photos that required the patience of job which unfortunately I do not have.
I am running on Aperture 3.1.1, iPhoto 11 (ver 9.1.1), OSX 10.6.5, on a 2.66 Quad Core Xeon MacPro with 8 GB ram and 6 TB hard drive space.

I figured out a "work-around" and I was able to import my iPhoto Library into Aperture. But in order to do it, I had to break up the iPhoto Library and import year-by-year, with each year going into a different Aperture Library. Most of the years imported without an issue, but there was 1 set that crashed a couple of times, so I assume that that's where the problem was.
At any rate, now my iPhoto Library is entirely converted to Aperture, but in 6 different Aperture Libraries with all the photos residing within the Aperture Libraries themselves. Is there a way now to consolidate them into 1 Aperture Library? Or do I have to create a 7th Aperture Library and import them in 1 by 1?

  • Aperture slows down on edited files

Hi folks, i run Aperture 2.1.2 on a 13" MacBook 2,4 GHz with 4 GB of RAM.
I noticed a loss of performance on both referenced and managed files as they get edited, especially when added of sharpen and enhance adjustments: the more adjustments they get the more Aperture slows down, especially annoying is scrolling through a 100% zoomed photo, with the movement delayed by 2/3 seconds...
There's actually a difference between referenced and managed files, as managed ones respond a bit better, but still not as an original one.
P.S. all masters are on the internal drive.
    Thanks for any suggestion...

cwog is correct about the overhead for displaying edited master images, but I disagree with his suggestion to export to view images. I suggest you use "Quick Preview" to display photos with minimal delay (use "P" as shortcut to turn on and off). You need to make sure you generate a preview automatically and set the size and quality under "Preferences --> Preview." Previews do not require the calculations for display as does the edited master image. Display time is much quicker.

  • Aperture failed to import from Image Capture

Is there any way to rescue all the images (I deleted before finding out )that failed to import (for who knows what reason!) into Aperture from Image Capture (off my iPhone)?

I'd appreciate an answer to this also as I frequently receive an "Aperture failed to import" message unless I directly import images from my camera (i.e., I can't use a card reader or import images saved to an import folder).

  • Aperture does not import jpg:s from certain files.

After reassembled all the programs to a new hard drive in Mac Pro, Aperture does not import certain files with .jpg -photos. Earlier it has succeeded. Changing the photo location does not help. Nor importing as projects. Files are visible when asking to import but the thumbs are not seen on Aperture window.

, I see only the file, where these photos are, not the photo names or thumbs inside the file (Aperture import path).
You mean in the Aperture Import panel the folder, where the jpegs should be, is empty?
Then you may have excluded jpegs from import in your "Import Settings".
Check the above settings in the "Import Settings" options in the "Import Window". I.e-make sure the Raw+Jpeg Pairs option is set to "Both", even if you do not import raws.
After reassembled all the programs to a new hard drive in Mac Pro
Is this new Harddrive your system volume? And are the jpegs you wat to import located on this drive? Or are the on another external volume? If yes, how is this volume formatted?
Have you checked the permissions and ownership of the jpegs?

  • Aperture refuses to import from Nikon D300

After Yesterdays update Aperture refuse to import RAW files from my Nikon D300 as it did before. I get the message "0 images has been imported...".
I can import to iPhoto and them export to Aperture so the RAW files seems OK.
And I can still import JPEGS from my small Canon IS850 directly to Aperture
    Larsan

I am doubting this has to do with updating to Aperture 2.1.2, but rather might be related to Camera RAW 2.3 -- what version of Camera RAW have you installed?
In the a topic about auto-rotation here, there are confirmed problems with not only auto-rotation, but also recognizing as duplicates any images remaining on the card that have previously been imported. The auto-rotation problem, at least in the Previews, is common to both Aperture and iPhoto 08, so clearly points to CRAW 2.3.
We need to see if your experience might also be related to CRAW 2.3. I am having no problem importing from a card reader with cards used in my D200 and D300 cameras, however, other than those mentioned in that topic.
