Aperture 3 stalls while importing photo folders

It appears that one of the latest updates for Aperture 3 now creates a situation where it just stops importing, even though it says it is still importing.  The progress wheels stop moving and the hard drive stops blinking and it just sits there.  This problem did not exist before one of the more recent updates.  Yes, it does now import faster, but it is now unreliable.  I now only import about 6 folders at a time because about every six or eight batches of folders I have to activate Quit Aperture, where it does not quit, and then I have to use option command escape to force quit.  Then I reload and have to inspect to see if some of the folders need to be reinstalled.  A pain in the butt.  I would rather have a slower, more reliable folder import.

I suspect your Aperture Library needs repairing. If you force quit Aperture, the Aperture Library may be left in an inconsistent state, because Aperture cannot complete the current transactions.
Before you try to import again, run the Aperture Library First Aid tools, to repair (or rebuild if necessary) your Aperture library.
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
If Aperture frequently hangs, try to avaoid force quit - it is risky with database applications. Sometimes you can quit an application from the Terminal, if it is unresponsive, see my user tip here:
If Aperture is unresponsive, how to avoid force quitting?
Besides an inconsistent Aperture Library that needs repairing, you may have imported an image or video that cannnot be processed, because it is defective or has an incompatible format. Than Aperture will try over and over again to process that one image or video and hang. Then you need to isolate the one imort that is causing this.

  • IPhoto Stalls while importing

Why would iPhoto stall while importing photos?
I recently used a Canon mount adapter on an old lens and took a few photos to test the lens on a Canon D30. I was capturing both RAW and JPG. The photos displayed as over exposed.
When I tried to sync (import) them into IPhoto, the program stalled on those photos. I was able to systemically import other photos (taken with other lenses) on the same card, but those RAW CR2 files from the older lens would not import properly.
Any reason why that might happen?

    Tim
It's possible that the Exif data on those pics is incomplete or damaged because of the old lens. I suggest that as a possible reason because I've seen it happen with pics shot via Lensbaby glass. The incomplete Exif prevents the importation.
Not sure what you can do with the RAWs, but if you Open the jpegs with Preview and Save them, that might get them in.

  • IPhoto suddenly quit while importing photos from camera unable to import photos from camera

iPhoto suddenly quit while importing photos from camera unable to import photos from camera that were imported before iPhoto quit. Photos are still on the camera however iPhoto only "sees" the photos that were not imported on this computer. I can connect to my other mac and see all the photos. This has happened before and I wanted to learn how to deal with this problem. Thanks Ed

I am using a MacBook Pro OS 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1 connected via usb to a Canon G12. I have had this issue before when importing photos. I can work around by using my other Mac and download the photos. I believe that there maybe a setting on the Mac that prevents duplicating photo downloads that may be preventing me from seeing these photos stored in the camera memory although I can view them on the camera.

  • IPhoto crashed while importing photos

While importing photos, iPhoto crashed. Now the pictures are damaged. Is there a possibility to regain them or salvage them?

I recovered the pictures in "Today" but they are damaged. You see the pictures in iPhoto but they are very small and there is no information about the picture availabe (shuttertime, diafragma etc).
Those are not your photos, only the thumbnails used for display.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Aperture crashes while importing from Canon Eos 5D

as from today aperture crashes while importing RAW pictures directly from my Canon eos 5D. did not have this problem before. after restarting aperture trys to recover the 4 or 5 imported pictures and then crashes again. As i'm on holyday and not having the original aperture DVD i can not reinstall aperture. Using iphoto is no problem, but importing the same pictures from iphoto into aperture results in crashing. anyone knows about this?
    Hugo

Before 10.5 came out, there were lots of rumors from fairly reliable websites about 10.4.11 imminent releases. In fact, plenty of us were hoping it would come out before 10.5, and with the expanded list of supported RAWs. But it's been over a week since 10.5, and there's no update from any of those rumor sites on 10.4.11. So, who knows...
I can definitely your frustration. But 10.5 is probably a worthwhile upgrade for most Mac users. Unless there's specific reasons (like there's a software you use that's known to be incompatible), you may want to upgrade now.
I am very happy with 10.5, and the the 40D RAW files look good on Aperture. No sRAW support though, which you may already know.

  • Iphoto won't quit, won't import photos, stalls while editing photos despite rebuilding the database

I have mountain lion and the newest version of iphoto.   It won't quit unless I force quit it, it won't import photos, it won't let me edit photos without freezing up.   I have tried rebuilding the database and repairing permissions without success

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it freezes also try this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the new library doesn't freeze or act like your current library then your current library is the culprit.
In that case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto hang while importing photos

  • IPhoto crashes when importing photo-folders that contain aliases

When iLife '06 came out I decided to move my iPhoto-library to a bigger disk by simply creating a new library and re-importing my >10000 photo's. All I got was crashes.
It has taken me quite some time to find out that an alias to the TOP of my photo-folders inside one of the folders deep down in the tree was causing this.
Removing the alias 'cured' the problem...
I suggest Apple writes a fix that makes sure iPhoto does not follow these kinds of aliases, that cause some kind of endless loop...

    Suggest that at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

  • Aperture Crashes While importing iPhoto 11

    Hi all,
I hope someone can help as I'm getting desperate. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple tech support to no avail.
I have an iPhoto library of 45K photos that I am attempting to import to Aperture 3. However, Aperture repeatedly crashes before completing the import. This happens at different times in the import (sometimes after importing 100 or so events, other times >300 events, but it never makes it to the end.
So far, I have tried the following (each time into a new Aperture Library):
    1. Duplicated and rebuilt the iPhoto library with command-option (crashed).
    2. Shift opened Aperture to disable background processing (still crashed).
    3. I tried importing a few events at a time, but with 45K photos that required the patience of job which unfortunately I do not have.
I am running on Aperture 3.1.1, iPhoto 11 (ver 9.1.1), OSX 10.6.5, on a 2.66 Quad Core Xeon MacPro with 8 GB ram and 6 TB hard drive space.

I figured out a "work-around" and I was able to import my iPhoto Library into Aperture. But in order to do it, I had to break up the iPhoto Library and import year-by-year, with each year going into a different Aperture Library. Most of the years imported without an issue, but there was 1 set that crashed a couple of times, so I assume that that's where the problem was.
At any rate, now my iPhoto Library is entirely converted to Aperture, but in 6 different Aperture Libraries with all the photos residing within the Aperture Libraries themselves. Is there a way now to consolidate them into 1 Aperture Library? Or do I have to create a 7th Aperture Library and import them in 1 by 1?

  • PSE 12 renames my imported photo folders?

Hi, I'm new to Photoshop and elements.  I downloaded a trial version of PSE 12 to my mac, and imported my photo folders.  It looks like PSE has renemed all my folder with strings of letters and characters.  How can I retrieve my original folder names, or figure out how to identify the folders PSE has created? Thanks so much for your help.

Ok, so I'm trying to deduce what has happened...I now see that (relief) my orginal folder names are mixed in with all the (many) newly created folders with the jumbled names, and the new folders represent duplicate sets.  This seems to be because of iphoto, which I think I need to delete altogether--never liked it.  It was extremely confusing bc when I did the 'reveal in finder' function, the location of the folder is a long string of info: /Volumes/Main external hard drive oct 2013/Main photo folder/NC/NC 5/iPhoto Library.photolibrary/Thumbnails/2013/07/30/20130730-110355.
I am trying to keep all photos on an external HD, aka 'Main external Hard Drive', but the iphoto library snuck into one of my folders when I was transferring them from the main HD to the external HD.  This created many duplicates.  I just deleted it.
Do you think I need to uninstall and reinstall PSE 12 to get rid of the many duplicate file folders?  Would that be the simplest fix?
I really appreciate your help.  Thanks.

  • Is there a way to select an Aperture library to import photo's?

Hi, I use multiple libraries in both Aperture and iMovie to keep size and speed under control.
The problem is that when importing photo's, iMovie won't allow selection of an Aperure library for browsing and import.
Instead, it automatically adds a library for browsing, but not the right one!
I tried opening Aperture with the library I want to import from, hoping to change the default, but it doesn't change anything in iMovie.

Ok, but does this set it for FUTURE additions? In other words, if I select all the current podcasts I have and right click, get info, set EQ preset to spoken word, then say next week I add a new podcast will it automatically set it to EQ spoken word or will I have to do the same thing all over again?

  • Aperture won't import photo with a tilde (~) in filename

I imported my photo library from iPhoto to Aperture (3.0.1) but noticed 533 photos were missing. Even using Import -> Show iPhoto Library, and then dragging the missing Events or photos into Aperture would not work. Aperture was missing some entire iPhoto Events, and then missing some random photos from within other Events.
After staring at it long enough, I finally noticed that all 533 seemingly unrelated photos all have a tilde (~) in their filename. My old Canon handheld (or some old Canon software) automatically put a tilde in the filename of these photos. Although the Aperture import function can see these photos and display their filename (i.e. 102-02~9), Aperture will not import them. When I try to import one of these Events or photos, Aperture creates an empty Project. iPhoto, Finder, and PhotoShop don't have any problems with a tilde, and I don't see any restriction against it in the User Manual.
I had to export these iPhoto photos into a folder, and batch rename them so their filename does not have a "~" in it, and then import them into Aperture. This will keep the EXIF data, but it will strip any keywords -- but those can be added during the import. Although you can batch change titles in iPhoto, I couldn't figure out how to change the iPhoto filename, which seems to be causing the problem.
I submitted an Aperture bug report.

I had to export these iPhoto photos into a folder, and batch rename them so their filename does not have a "~" in it, and then import them into Aperture. This will keep the EXIF data, but it will strip any keywords -- but those can be added during the import.
File -> Export. Check the box at 'Title and Keywords' in iPhoto and the keywords will be written to the file.
Although you can batch change titles in iPhoto, I couldn't figure out how to change the iPhoto filename, which seems to be causing the problem.
File -> Export, using the Title as Filename is one of the options in the resulting dialogue in iPhoto. Select it from the Drop down at Filename...

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS (10.4.10), Quicktime (7.1.6) and the app.
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
    4. Are there movies on these cards as well as photos?
