Aperture 3 Upgrade:  Can't Keyword or Rate Multiple Images

Select more than 1 image and apply a rating or a keyword. The rating/keyword only gets applied to only 1 of the images.
This worked in Aperture 2.
Is anyone else seeing this?

You sure you haven't got 'Primary Only' in operation?

  • Aperture 3.4.5 upgrade won't allow me to rate multiple images

I recently upgraded my Mac OS from Snow Leopard (10.6) to Mountain Lion (10.8) on both a Mac Pro Laptop and Mac Pro Tower.  The System upgrades required me to upgrade from Aperture 3.2.4 to Aperture 3.4.5 on both machines.
Consequently, I have run into a strange anomoly on my Mac Pro Tower that I am not experiencing on my Mac Pro Laptop -- when working in Aperture on my Mac Pro Tower I am not able to Rate multiple images at a time ... no matter how many images I select (2 or 200) only one image will respond to the command.
I experienced this same issue back a couple years ago with earlier versions of Aperture 3 ... I don't remember how the issue was resolved.
I guess the issue is whether this is an Aperture issue, an OS issue, a User issue, etc.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?  ... any solutions out there?
    Thanks

This looks like you may have the "Primary Only" flag enabled. Turn it off, then you should be able to rate several photos at once, see:
Keywords or ratings are applied only to one of the selected images - why?

I recently switched to Aperture. When I opened an image I imported from iPhoto, I don't have an option to edit it. Top of "Adjustments" tab says "image offline". How can I adjust Aperture so I can make adjustment to my iPhoto images?

I never tried importing from the iPhoto library as referenced images. I wonder if Aperture can access images stored in an iPhoto library package?  Even if it would work, it sounds like a bad thing to do.
You might consider starting over and this time have Aperture manage the images.  That will copy them to the Aperture library, leaving the iPhoto library untouched. This assumes you have sufficient space to make a complete copy of all the images in your iPhoto library plus another copy of each image that Aperture makes as the preview image. You can then back up your iPhoto library (two backup copies, just to be sure) then remove it from your hard drive when you start getting too low on space.  As I write this I don't know where your iPhoto or Aperture libraries are/will be located so I'm assuming you have them on your HD.

  • Add common keyword quickly across multiple images?

Is there a way to quickly add a common keyword across multiple selected images via simple text entry into the Metadata Panel or File Info dialogue - without loosing the existing multiple keywords?
I can use the keyword panel but this takes longer to add the keyword, and requires removing misc keywords that in most cases I don't want to keep and clutter up the panel.
For example, I have 3 images selected each with a single keyword "dog", "cat" and "horse" respectively.
I want to add a common keyword "animal", eg so that the first image now has two keywords  "dog" and "animal".
The problem with the two methods above is that:
Metadata panel will remove the existing multiple keywords, replacing them with only "animal" in each image
File Info will either do the same (if all existing keywords are highlighted), or if adding the new keyword, combine everything into each image so that each one has "dog", "cat", "horse", and "animal".
Maybe I'm missing something obvious but it doesn't seem intuitive for what I would expect to be a common requirement.
    Thanks

How about to use Metadata Template to append the keyword that you want to add to multiple selected images?
First create a Metadata Template with the common keyword input. And then select the all the images you want to add the keyword and then append the prepared Metadata Template.

  • Camera Raw - Can't Apply Same Value Multiple Images

Camera Raw 8.1 opened from within Photoshop.  Windows 7.
If I open a bunch of .cr2 files into Raw and want (for example) all of the Contrast values to be "25" or the Highlights to be "-90", I cannot seem to get images in the selection range other than the first one or two to mirror the same values.  I shift click / control click for a range and then try either typing in the value (number number then enter) or by scrubbing to the value.  Neither works.  I've tried saving out an .xmp Settings file to import to the selection - same non result.
I even tried Synchronize - I tweak the first, select my range and then hit Synchronize and uncheck everything other than (this example) Contrast and Highlights and hit okay ... still nothing.
This has been like this for a while but now I'm working with a very large batch of images that share very similar lighting values so it's driving me nuts to sit here in 2013 and punch in numbers one at a time.
    Thanks for your suggestions,
    Marc

Two things, you have to be in Grid View, not Filmstrip Selection and not have Menu/Metadata/'Show Metadata for Target Photo Only' checked. I and others have gotten bitten by this, too.

  • Keywords cannot be assigned to multiple images

A keyword can NOT be assigned to multiple images at the same time when following the procedures outlined in the Aperture help. I can't find this problem addressed in a FAQ or knowledge base. We're told to select multiple images in the Browser window then drag a keyword to any of the images to assign that keyword to all the selected images. This does not work -- only the specific image on which the keyword is dropped will actually be tagged with the keyword. The other images, though properly selected, do not receive the keyword. The keyword must be assigned to one image at a time. Needless to say, this is more time consuming than it's worth when you're faced with thousands of images that need to be tagged.
I own two registered copies of Aperture, both up to date with the latest patches, and the problem occurs on both systems, so I know its not something related to a single computer.
Surely I'm not the only person who has encountered this problem?

I thought I had the same problem, but then did the following:
    1. In Browser (grid view) went ot lower right and turned off the "primary only button" (ie it should not be "lit")
    2. Highlighted the images I wanted to apply the same keyword to
    3. Opened the keyword HUD
    4. Clicked on the keyword I wanted and then dragged it to one of the highlighted images in the browser

I have been working on a wedding slideshow for days and have over 3,000 pictures in albums on iPhoto.  It suddenly will not open without upgrading to Aperture and I can't find any of my photos!!!!  I need these photos, to complete the video, not to mention I don't want to lose them. I have had trouble ever since upgrading  to Maverick.

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • How to upgrade a Library on an external drive created in a previous version of aperture so I can re-import it from the external drive into Aperture 3.5.1 on my MBP ?

I have exported earlier Projects [which were created in Aperture 3.4.5] to an external hard drive. Now I wish to reimport them into Aperture 3.5.1 - which I use after having upgraded to Mavericks - but am given an error message saying I can’t reimport because the external drive is storing a Library created by an earlier version of Aperture than I’m using now. It tells me to upgrade that externally stored Library.
The Question - one can only upgrade a Library on one’s computer, not on the external drive. How can I upgrade it if I can’t get it back into Aperture [3.5.1] on my MacBookPro in the first place ?
    Thank  you
    Bob

The Question - one can only upgrade a Library on one’s computer, not on the external drive. How can I upgrade it if I can’t get it back into Aperture [3.5.1] on my MacBookPro in the first place ?
You can upgrade the library on the external drive. Connect your external drive to your computer.
Then select the library with the exported projects on the external drive and double-click it to open it in Aperture. This will upgrade the library to Aperture 3.5.1.  Since upgrading can sometimes be problematic, I recommend to make a backup copy of the library before you try to upgrade the library.
After that you should be able to merge the library into your main library using File > Import.

  • I have lost my Aperture 2 serial number how do I get a new one so that I can install Aperture 3 upgrade

I have Aperture 2, changed my imac, used the backup system and found that I cannot find my serial number for Aperture 2. I have Aperture 3 upgrade, so can someone please advise how I get my serial number for Aperture 2 please. Hence I can not install Aperture 2, and therefore same problem not being able to install upgrade. Assistance would be much appreciated.

I was having the same problem, unable to find my trash can. I did everythnig suggested in this post to no avail. Then I discovered if you hover to the far right of RECENT you will see either "Show" or "Hide"  "Show" reveals the following, including the trash. I'm sheepish that the solution was so easy but delighted to report that after viewing AND emptying my trash, I gained 55 GB on my HD.

Call Apple and make a appointment.
You have 3 months of care and up to 3 years with paid AppleCare, let them handle it and bring everything in.

  • Can Aperture 3 upgrade read/convert v1.5.6 library?

In the process of migrating apps/files from G5 to Mac Pro. Unfortunately, my trusty version of Aperture 1.5.6 will not run on the Mac Pro forcing me to upgrade to v3. I have the original Aperture library and two backups, my question is when I go to install the Aperture 3 upgrade and tell it to read/convert the existing Aperture library will it be able to? Thanks.

I think it should and will. My advice to you would be to copy the Ap Library to a separate drive in your Mac Pro with lots and lots of free space. Then control-click on that (or open A3 and use File/Open), and choose A3 to open it, and be prepared to wait for several hours, depending upon the size of your library.
Btw, I use Managed files, but have my Aperture Library on a separate hard drive at all times. Seemed the thing to do, taking a cue from Final Cut where you are always advised to have your video assets on a different drive from the boot drive.

  • New Aperture user trying to add keywords

I'm getting really frustrated. I've been a long time iPhoto user, but my husband bought me Aperture and I'm trying to move to it. . . .anyway, I'm trying to add keywords to some of my pictures (I miss my "hot keys"). I have the Keyword Controls open on the bottom of the split view window and I've set up a variety of keyword preset lists. . . Anyway, the problem that I am having is when I select multiple images to apply a keyword to, it is only applying the keyword to the "primary" (meaning the boldly outlined in white) image - even though the other images as selected (outlined in a less bold white boarder) the keywords are not assigned to them. It's like I have to add the keywords to each image one at a time. I've looked at a bunch of the material online and it's clear to me that you are SUPPOSED to be able to add keywords to multiple images at a time. Anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

    Casey,
The only thing I can think of is, do you have the 'Primary Only' button selected? When that is selected, you can select multiple photos, but you can only edit whichever photo is your main selection (the one with the bold white around it)
Try making sure that 'Primary Only' button is NOT selected, and then dragging a keyword onto all of the photos. By the way, the primary only button is in the bottom right hand corner of the aperture window. It is a square with the number '1' in it.
    Hope that helps!

  • Upgrading from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3: Upgrade issues

    1) I installed Aperture 3 from my upgrade disk. I am getting a message that there isn't enough memory in my Aperture library... I have 13.45 gb of space on my Macbook Pro's hard drive.
    2) I have a lot of images, Aperture projects located outside of Apeture in folder and a few Aperture libraries on an external hard drive that I want to be able to use with my Aperture 3, how can I be sure that I will be able to access & use all the information on my external hard drive with Aperture 3
    3) I connected my external hard drive to my Macbook pro and was going to update Aperture 2 to 3 but first wanted to backup my computer but now Time Machine is telling me that my backup failed but I can't figure out why. I have 222gb available on my external hard drive.
    4) Now I can't access my Aperture library without completing the upgrade, but I can't complete the upgrade because Im getting the error message "Insufficient Space There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library Volume" huh?
Anyone have a clue what is going on??

You did not mention what OS version you are running. There is a technical paper somewhere in the Apple site (?) about removing the Aperture library from Time Machine backups. I know this could be outdated, but are you aware of this?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1878
THe issue of running Aperture while restoring still applies.
To open Aperture 3 and start with a fresh library you can do the following:
Start Aperture holding down the Option key. This will allow you to create a new library. Create this library on your external drive (navigate in the window to the location desired on your external) and make sure you name it something different than the original Aperture library name. Now Aperture 3 will be installed on your computer.
Open Aperture 3 with this new Library. Now you can merge the libraries OR perhaps switch from the current library to your original version.
Make sure you have a full backup of your library before proceeding.

  • I have aperture 1. When I uploaded Snow Leopard I couldn't open Aperture.Do I have to purchase Aperture 3 or can I just purchase the latest download and have it work?

I have an I Mac and on it is Aperture one. i have all my photos on it. When I bought Snow Leopard, I could no longer use Aperture because it says i can't open it with Snow Leopard. Do I have to buy a brand new Aperture 3 or can  i just download the most recent Aperture 3 download. In other words does the recent download allow me to start using it again, or do I have to go through buying all the downloads?

You can just purchase Aperture 3. If you do this from the App Store it will cost you $80 US but this is still cheaper then buying the individual upgrades.
