Aperture 3 - will Chronosync work with referenced library?

This is a one-library, two-Macs question.
The iMac is where I do my main Aperture work. The MacBook also gets Aperture use, sometimes creating new projects (easy enough to merge when back at base), but mostly I think it will be used for generally read-only stuff: slideshows/albums for friends & family; sending in emails; inserting in blog posts etc. (And maybe doing some basic metadata/rating work on previews during downtime.)
I'm a fairly new Aperture 3 user, and am still getting to grips with my preferred method of managing files (many gigabytes of photos haven't yet been imported from standard folders). Until now I've been slowly building a managed library on the iMac, and using Chronosync to synchronise it with the MacBook. Of course it's quickly becoming too large for the laptop (not to mention a cumbersome process), and there's really no need for anything but screen-sized previews on the MacBook.
What I think I'd like to do is keep a fully referenced library on the iMac to a large external hard drive, generating previews for all images, and synchronising this referenced library between iMac and MacBook. I'm hoping that all I end up synchronising is the previews + metadata (I'll use the 'Dissect Packages' option) and what I'll end up with is a Library-lite preview version on the laptop that is, to all intents & purposes, a duplicate of the full-on referenced iMac library.
Does anyone else use this setup? It seems logical to me, but I don't know if there are practical limitations. It's maybe worth mentioning I'm a long time Chronosync user, and am quite used to the discipline of only opening certain apps (e.g. Mail) on one computer or the other before doing a sync, so I'm au fait with the paradox of one-way bi-directional syncs!

I think you may find a better answer than chronosync is to change your iMac library to all referenced, then copy the library to the MacBook. You can use the merge feature in aperture 3 to keep it all current:

As long as your library has previews in it, you will have all the images in your library available to see on the MacBook, and you'll even be able to do some jobs like rating and tagging on the laptop.

You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

For 18 months, I've had my beloved iPod mini. Alas, the time has now come to trade it in for a newer model. I have only one concern left. The iPod is notorious for its restrictions on users. I've had iTunes synched to my mini for the last year and a half. If I go out and buy an iPod video, will it work with my music library? If it doesn't, how can I get it to work? Lastly, I'll probably upgrade again when they improve the iPod video. Will IT, in turn, work, after having used the older version before it!?

That's good to hear. What has me worried is that my little brother recently bought an iPod of his mate. He tried synching it with my library and it just didn't register. Photos seems to be a minimal improvement to iPhotos and a terribly inadequate replacement for Aperture. Aperture is working with 10.10.2 on my new MAC, but when I installed 10.10.3 on my macbook, Aperture is crossed out. When I open it, I get a message "this version of Aperture does not work with OS X Yosemite". It also says I can get the correct version from the App store for free. when I look for Aperture on the App store it is not listed. What has Apple done?

I Called Apple and they walked me through the process of getting Aperture to work on OSX 10.10.3:
Find Aperture in your Applications folder then
Drag it to Trash and empty Trash (your Aperture library is not affected by this).
Restart your computer
Log on to App Store, and find your Purchases
locate The Aperture application.
It should show Install, and not Upgrade at this point.
click on that to download Aperture 3.6
instal that in your Applications folder.
Of course, this only works if you purchased Aperture from Apple, and registered it with them.
This is worked for me and I now have Aperture 3.6 running on Yosemite. The drawback here is that there is no further support will be offered for Aperture, so another alternative will eventually be required. I took advantage of an offer from Adobe, and downloaded Lightroom CC and Bridge CC (Creative Cloud). I already had Photoshop CC, but they bundled it all together for me at a very reasonable price. All these applications will use your Aperture and iPhoto libraries should you wish to import them into the application, so there will be no duplication of Libraries. Hope this helps you like it did me.

You know, many people continue to use discontinued software for years without problems. There are millions of people out there still using iMovie HD 06 and iDVD because there is nothing better.

It's a five step process
Call Apple Support for Software > Aperture
Answer questions at recorded message (have Aperture serial number ready – it is on a sticker on the back of the 'Installing Your Software' booklet) and you will be transferred to a real person.
Inform them of the issue and they will tell you that this is a known issue with certain users and they will request a 'Redemption Code' for the App Store for a standalone download of Aperture. The issue will be rectified in the next Yosemite release.
Wait for email from Support (they have to contact Support in California for redemption code, so depending on your time zone, there may be some delay).
Visit App Store, enter redemption code, and you are good to go.

iTunes will only manage the content on Apple branded devices.
For a 3rd party product use the tools that came with it, Windows Media Player or Windows Explorer. I used to use SyncToy with my iRiver H140 to copy over the compatible files from the music folder of my library into the device.
If you decide to use Windows Media Player read this post first.

I just got the solution (that worked for me, anyway) from a Sony support rep. No PC or VMWare needed.
OK, you've installed Sony eBook Library v3, and Adobe Digital editions, you've set up your acocunts and authorized your computer on both of them, and you've authorized your Reader with the Sony Library application.
You go to the public library ebook download page, either through the Sony Library or just through a bookmark.
You check out a book, and open it in Adobe Digital Editions, which still won't recognize your Reader.
BUT, in the Sony Library app, you can now click "File, Import.." and go find the pdf you downloaded with the Adobe app.
On my Mac, it was in ~/Documents/Digital Editions
Import it, and drag it to your Reader.
The first time you do this, it will ask you to authorize the Reader with your Adobe ID.
Worked like a charm.

Since the calendar and contact list on my office computer are my primay ones, I hard sync through iTunes. The problem is that any data synced from Outlook 2003 to the iPhone from iTunes does NOT later backup to iCloud. Is there a solution?

You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
         you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process
         by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
         installation current.

Get a Virtual Macine software program, Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox, and install XP in a virtual machine.
You can't install XP in a Boot Camp Partition with Lion or Mt Lion, only Win 7.
