Aperture Adds Strange Keywords

Hello,
I have imported about 20 iPhoto libraries into Aperture 3.  Many of these have keywords assigned in iPhoto and they appear correctly as keywords in Aperture.  Aperture adds other keywords such as iPhoto Original, etc. which I understand.  However, there are cases in which Aperture has also added one of its Project titles to a photo's keyword list (these were not keywords in the iPhoto images).  If I open the Aperture keyword list these are in it but  they are not in the Filter HUD keyword list.  What is going on here?  I am wondering if the Aperture library is corrupted and I need to restore from the Vault backup which I think was made before I noticed this problem.  The iPhoto libraries seem to work fine but could they be a problem (Aperture uses iPhoto Event titles as Project titles)?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Mike

Hello Leonie,
Thank you for your response.
Yes, I did mean Keyword HUD, sorry.  If I examine the Keyword HUD and the Keyword Filter with all photos in the library selected, the oddball added keywords appear in the HUD but not the filter.
Thanks for the tip on hierarchical  keyword categories.  I tried that with Library Manager but when they were shared among all my libraries the structure I set up was lost.  I plan to use this feature in Aperture once my library is complete.
However, the strange keyword question may be academic since I discovered after my post that I had the following warnings from Console which I interpret to mean serious problems with the library:
One Console Warning like this (last one on the list):
12/6/11 4:21:16 PM          Aperture[1095]          An instance 0x134a66970 of class RKVersion was deallocated while key value observers were still registered with it. Observation info was leaked, and may even become mistakenly attached to some other object. Set a breakpoint on NSKVODeallocateBreak to stop here in the debugger. Here's the current observation info:

Many Console Warnings like this (should have saved more of them):
12/6/11 1:41:32 PM          ScreenSaverEngine[1132]          Couldn't load image for path: /Volumes/OWC On-The-Go (SATA)/Aperture Library 11:30:11/Aperture Library1.aplibrary/Previews/2011/11/29/20111129-101150/kqu+Y3vXTLulk88738Y6ew/I MG_0517.JPG.jpg
I wonder if "mistakenly attached" has anything to do with my keyword problem.  I found IMG_0517.JPG.jpg (is  ".JPG.jpg" a valid extension?) and found 5 in Aperture, all of which ware taken at different places and different dates.  The keywords were all OK. Four had the extension .JPG and one had no extension, just IMG_0517.
My plan now is to restore from my Vault copy and check for the odd keywords it it.  If they are present I guess I will have to trash the library and start over.
Sorry for such a long post.
I welcome any observations on this.

  • Mail message to automatically add a keyword to a photo in aperture library?

This is going to be a really specific and odd request.
I am a photographer; and I am trying to set up a system using automator, aperture, and mail to be able to create a webpage that has a listing of a bunch of images with a basically a form that you can use to select picks that will then email the form results to me. I have the basic webpage output set up through automator and aperture, but the problem I am having is getting mail to lift the message contents, pass that on to filter the aperture files and add a keyword to the image.
Basically, I want to have a rule set up that when a new messages comes in where the subject is imagepicks, it grabs the message content which is say 034365PDP080309, takes that and looks through the aperture library for image 034365PDP080309 and adds a keyword to it...
Am I way outside of the scope of automator?

    Hello,
I don't get what you mean by "a folder in the Finder"! A folder - unless hidden - is always browsable in the Finder.
Then, what do you expect to be in those folders? A Word file, a RTF file, a simple text file?
If you want to filter your mails, you can use "Rules" that you can access from Mail's preferences. This is far the best methods.
There are other methods, but they require Unix programming skills and the setup of you own mail server locally on our Mac.
    Hoping this helps,
    Thierry

  • Aperture 2 and Keywords

Does anyone have any information regarding any changes or enhancements in the way that Aperture 2 handles keywords. Have there been any upgrades with this feature. For example, I have frequently wanted to be able to conduct an hierarchal keyword search, i.e. to be able to search on a top level keyword and find photos that are included beneath that keyword.

I don't know specifically about any improvements regarding keywords from Aperture 1.5 to 2.0 but in Aperture 2.1 you are able to add and search hierarchical keywords structures.
One very important thing to know is that you ALWAYS have to add keywords to the hierarchical keyword structure in the keyword HUD BEFORE you apply them to your specific images.
Aperture is actually smart enough to distinguish between the same word used in different places in your keyword hierarchy. Here is an example. Let us say that you have created the following keyword hierarchy in your keyword HUD:
    /Wildlife/Bird/Duck/Male
    /Wildlife/Bird/Duck/Female
    /Wildlife/Kangaroo/Male
    /Wildlife/Kangaroo/Female
If you do a simple text search by typing the search word into the search field then:
If you search for "Wildlife" all your male and female ducks and kangaroos will show up.
If you search for "Bird" your male and female ducks will show up.
If you search for "Male" your male ducks and male kangaroos will show up.
But if you are looking for only your male ducks then you just open the keyword brick in the search HUD and here you will see that there are actually two different "Male" keywords. Just next to those two keywords the upper hierarchy keyword is listed in parentheses. You just check the one you want.
Again in order for this hierarchy structure to work then you must add new keywords in the keyword HUD before you add them to your images. All keywords you add to your images by typing directly into the keyword field in the metadata viewer will appear at the top level of your keyword hierarchy.

  • Can add the "keywording" panel in the Develop tab?

Can add the "keywording" panel in the Develop tab?
In my workflow, I rate or tag a photo only after I've made some PP adjustment. So, my workflow would flow better if the "keywording" tab resided in the Development tab as well. Is this possible? Can you add a panel from another tab?

Not just keywords. Well.. I try to salvage borderline photos first through development, and add keywords if they come out right. If not, I reject the photos without adding any keywords.
    dj_paige wrote:
As CatOne2 said, you can't do this.
The Lightroom paradigm, for better or worse, is that you add keywords in the Library module.
I cannot imagine why you would need to first post-process a photo before you know what keywords to add. Can you explain why you feel this is necessary?

  • Add common keyword quickly across multiple images?

Is there a way to quickly add a common keyword across multiple selected images via simple text entry into the Metadata Panel or File Info dialogue - without loosing the existing multiple keywords?
I can use the keyword panel but this takes longer to add the keyword, and requires removing misc keywords that in most cases I don't want to keep and clutter up the panel.
For example, I have 3 images selected each with a single keyword "dog", "cat" and "horse" respectively.
I want to add a common keyword "animal", eg so that the first image now has two keywords  "dog" and "animal".
The problem with the two methods above is that:
Metadata panel will remove the existing multiple keywords, replacing them with only "animal" in each image
File Info will either do the same (if all existing keywords are highlighted), or if adding the new keyword, combine everything into each image so that each one has "dog", "cat", "horse", and "animal".
Maybe I'm missing something obvious but it doesn't seem intuitive for what I would expect to be a common requirement.
    Thanks

How about to use Metadata Template to append the keyword that you want to add to multiple selected images?
First create a Metadata Template with the common keyword input. And then select the all the images you want to add the keyword and then append the prepared Metadata Template.

  • Aperture not recognizing keywords for smart album

    Friends,
I've set up a smart album that contains images with a particular keyword. The smart album contains family pictures and I use it for my screensaver. I've done this for several years without incident.
Today, I noticed that the album only contained about six images (instead of the hundreds it previously contained). Baffled, I looked to see if the images that used to be in the smart album, but no longer were, still have the magic keyword. They do. If I add the keyword to an image again, it will be included in the smart album. However, there are hundreds of images with the keyword that the smart album is not picking up.
I'm running Ap3 with all updates.
Have any of you experienced this? I've repaired the library to no avail, and I'm currently rebuilding the library. Any other ideas?
    Thanks!

I have had this happen. And, while I'm not sure why it happens, I've found that if you select "text" from within the smart album filter and enter your magic keyword, all works as it should. Totally baffled by the why's behind this issue.
    Hope this helps!

  • Aperture adds the same name to all new locations, how do I delete the name but not the address?

Aperture adds the same name to all new locations, how do I delete the name but not the address?

It's easy to rename each unit.  When you connect your iPad and it syncs, the unit will appear on the left of the iTUnes screens just click on the unit there and you can rename it.  You should do this immediately so you can see which unit was backed up by it's name. You can sync as many decices as you want in one iTunes library and you can even share Apps as long as you're going to sync both from teh same iTunes account.  My household has 2 iPad 2s and we share our apps, and we also share downloaded books, magazines, music, etc.......

  • Can't install aperture add on to lightroom 5.6

I want to install aperture add on to aperture but I don't have creative cloud. I have tried using extension manager but it just keeps coming up with error even after i reintall the manager. Help?

Well, I'm pretty sure that at this point you may not be able to install the trial at all, since they're set up to think you're cheating on the 30 day limit if you try an uninstall/reinstall. The problem is the PS trial you had before. What you need to do is to download and run this:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs3clean.html
to remove the last bits of the CS3 trial before installing PSE 6. It won't hurt to try it, but whether you'll be able to run the PSE trial will depend on how far the installer got the first time, I'm afraid.

  • Aperture add keywords from iPad

I'm looking at a way to add keywords per image from my new iPad (2012), then sync / update the Aperture 3 DB on the Mac.
The problem is that the library is huge and there are many keywords created already (1000+), so I don't want an app that proceeds by offering the selection of keywords, that would take ages [there is an average of 10 keywords per picture, each of them would have to be found from a list of 1000...].
Ideally the input of keywords would be like on Aperture, in the Metadata / Keywords field: input a comma separated list of keywords (so, from the ipad keyboard [assisted by the bluetooth kb]).
    What would you recommend?
I'm a developer myself and may write a script on the Mac if necessary - I just don't know where to look at.

    Soren Maigaard wrote:
    Is this possible
Yes, Ottomanic Importer (@v3.6) has built in support for folder names as keywords upon import.
But note: you can already use folder name in library filter and smart collections - are you sure you need such metadata replicated as keywords too?
How I would answer that question:
    * If adding in place: no.
    * if copying or moving (into a shallower folder structure, with a simplified naming scheme): yes.

  • Aperture 3 - custom keywords are not searcheable

    Hi,
I used to use keywords in Aperture 2 extensively - I'm a cycling photographer and I add the relevant keywords to cyclists' photos. Given that I have over 100 keywords, I used to use the search function to find the rider I needed. When upgraded to Aperture 3, this stopped working and it only searches among the default keywords, but not my custom ones. Has anyone encountered this problem and if yes, what's the solution?
    Thanks,
    Balint

    That should certainly work.
I just tested with my library and added the keyword 'Wout van Aert'.
The I could find it easily in the Keywords HUD:
The keywords are stored in your Aperture library in internal propertylist files. If the HUD cannot search the keywords properly, these library items may be incorrect.
Make a test - create a new Aperture library and add a few images. Define a few keywords.  Does this work in a new library?
If yes, then use the Library First Aid Tools to repair your Aperture library, or to rebuild, if necessary.
see   Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library.
To repair or rebuild your Aperture library
    Close Aperture, if it’s open.
Locate the Aperture library you want to fix, then hold down the Command and Option keys while double-clicking the Aperture library.
The Aperture Library First Aid dialog appears.
To repair the permissions of the files within your Aperture library: Select Repairing Permissions.
To rebuild your database from scratch: Click Rebuild Database.
Before rebuilding, make sure you have a current backup.

  • Aperture: easily clear keyword selection ?

Searching your Aperture library through a keyword search is a great way to find the images you need. Yet, the way it is implemented in Aperture raises a question: is there a simple way (preferably a single action) to clear the check boxes in the keyword search dialogue ? I have not yet found it.
The problem I encounter is the following: after selecting multiple keywords in the search dialogue the easy way to get back to the all-image display is to uncheck the keywords selection box. The checks with the keywords themselves, however, will still be there. Checking the keyword selection checkbox again will re-display the selected images. So far, fine. But now (or tomorrow) I want to make a new selection. As soon as I check the keyword selection checkbox, the previous search results will be shown and I must now manually find out what keywords are checked. Since my keyword list is rather long, this is a cumbersome process. What I have been looking for is a simple command or button to uncheck all keywords in the search dialoge to start with a fresh list, but I have not been able to find such a command.
Am I overlooking something obvious or is this just missing from Aperture ? Any help is appreciated.

    dinky2,
What I have been looking for is a simple command or button to uncheck all keywords in the search dialoge to start with a fresh list, but I have not been able to find such a command.
To start with a fresh list, add a second keyword rule from the "Add Rule" menu and delete the old rule bypressing "-" or disable it by unchecking it.

  • Copying my Aperture Library to Keyword on Vacation?

On upcoming vacation I would like to work on keywording my (large for me) Aperture libary.
Library is 66 Gig (referenced library) plus all the actual images (465 Gig).
Is the following the best strategy?
    1) Copy the entire referenced libray PLUS all the images from my Desktop onto a portable drive for vacation.
    2) Do keywording on the portable.
    3) When I return, merge the portable copy with the new keywording onto the permanent MacPro?
Seems to me that Aperture wouldn't let me merge two libraries a few months ago because one was a clone of the other with only keyword changes.
I wish I could just bring a copy of the referenced library without the actual 465gig of images but Aperture won't let you keyword those.
    Thanks.
    Jim

Hi Jim.  The answer is "Yes".
Here's more.  Your Library is a database.  The core record in the database is the Image.  Attached to the Image are all the info-pieces Aperture knows about the Image.  One of the pieces of Information is where that Image's Master is located.  (If it is located inside the Library, the Image has a Managed Master; if it is located outside the Library, that Image has a Referenced Master.)  The Library is a stand-alone unit -- you can put it on any up-to-snuff Mac that has Aperture (the program) installed, and open it and use it.  If, when open, Aperture can access your Masters, then they are "on-line" and you have access to all of Aperture's features.  If Aperture cannot access a Master, then that Image's Master is "off-line" and you cannot make adjustments to, or export full versions of, or print (a form of export) that Image.  Even if the Master is off-line, you can work with all Image metedata: ratings, keywords, Albums, etc.
So: copy your Library to your laptop.  You now have another backup.  Take your laptop on vacation.  Add to your Library (probably using Managed Masters), do whatever keywording and other metadata administration you want on any of your Images.  Return home.  As a precaution, make a backup of your changed-on-vacation Library.  Then delete the Library on your desktop (this copy is now out-of-date), empty your system trash, and copy your up-to-date Library from your laptop to your desktop.  STOP USING the laptop version.  Use the desktop version.
While on vacation, your not-added-while-on-vacation Masters will be off-line.  Once you copy your laptop Library back to your desktop and open it, it should find and reconnect to all your old Masters -- it will make them "on-line".
You can filter for Images with Managed Masters (the ones you imported while vacationing), and use "File→Relocate Masters" to convert them from Managed to Referenced and join them with your pre-vacation Masters.
It is possible to take only a subset of your Library with you.  That is a little more complicated.  In that case, you will want to select the Images you want to have available on vacation, and export them as a Library.  Take that Library with you, work with those Images (with the same limitations vis-a-vis whether they have Managed or Referenced Masters), and then merge that Library into your desktop Library.
    Have a good trip.

  • How do I add a keyword tag in iPhoto on the iPad?

I looked through the Help for iPhoto and couldn't find a section on how to add keyword tags to my images.
Things like the names of the people in the photos, etc.
The screen shots of iPhoto show a Face Taggging feature.
How do I get to that?
Thanks for any help or advice!

    I talked with Apple Support.
The iPhoto app on the iPad is not the same as iPhoto on the Mac.
It doesn't support adding keyword tags.
Possibly a feature to be added in the future.
I have iCloud enabled for PhotoStream.
So my iPad picture was sent automatically to my download folder on my pc.
I can take it from there into PhotoShop Elements and add the tags.
