Aperture and "AAE extensions" on images

Trying to import photos from iPhone 5S to Aperture on iMac running OS X (10.9.5) following phone upgrade to iOS 8.0.2. Images now have an 'AAE extension' which Aperture does not recognize. What to do?

Seems to have resolved. Imported a bunch last night that went in as JPG. I don't know what was up with the AAE nor where they came from.

  • Aperture and PhotoStream - too big images?

Just updated my Lion workstation and Aperture to 3.2. Merged to iCloud the whole and I was trying to get a grip on PhotoStream.
While taking a picture with my iPhone and having it everywhere right away seems cool, as a photographer with a Canon 1Ds Mk III, a bit more than 8MP, I can see application of this feature only if it's 100% working with my Aperture lib.
Well then, I just tried to load in Stream an old 12,7 MP TIFF and a sad sad sad message states it "Can't do it. only supports JPEG, TIFF, RAW etc... OR the image is too big."
You're telling me I need to export from Aperture a scaled down version of each image, re-import in the lib and the finally put it into the stream? Am I missing something?
    D

Same here with RAW from a Nikon D300. Files too big. Sometimes just the first photo finds its way to PhotoStream.
Scaling should occur automatically when exporting to PhotoStream. Sadly, problem still there in 4.3.1.

Help, I had aperture open and working on a image and did not have a battery in and bumped the power off. As a result it will not open my master, it is locked. when I try to open that Library  it says There was an error opening the database for the library. I have tried every thing. I updated the other libr but now it will not open the main to update. What do I do?

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.

  • How to get Aperture and iPhoto to use Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively

Using some techniques that I found in various places in these forums, I am going to give step-by-step instructions to get Aperture and iPhoto to recognize Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively.
Note: This worked for me using 10.4.6 with the latest iPhoto 06 and Aperture updates. I do NOT know if this will work on older versions of OS X, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Note: If you also use a Pentax *ist DS camera, these instructions will probably disable support for that particular device due to the modifications made to a system file. Only complete these instructions if you want to use a *ist DL camera.
** These instructions involve modifying system level files using a HEX editor. If you are not comfortable with this, do NOT attempt to do this or you could kill your system. Remember, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. These steps worked great for me but follow at your own risk!! **
    Ok, lets begin...
    1) Download this great patch by macintosh_tech
    http://idisk.mac.com/macintosh_tech-Public
This patch contains an updated raw.plist file which includes the RAW information for the *ist DL. This patch also contains an updated libRaw.dylib file and an updated Raw Presets file for Aperture.
** Do NOT copy the libRaw.dylib file from this patch to the folder listed in the patch Read_Me. This file did not work on my Intel-based Mac and crashed my system!!
I was able to modify my original libRaw.dylib file using a HEX editor to get it to work on my system. Instructions for this modification will follow.
    2) Open the .dmg of the patch in a Finder window
    3) Open a new finder window and browse to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ImageIO.fra mework/Resources
*4) Backup the libRaw.dylib and Raw.plist files. Copy them to a safe location. For extra safety, you can just copy the whole Resources folder to a safe location (Make sure that you COPY it and dont MOVE it)*
    5) Right-click the libRaw.dylib file and select "Get Info". Look at the bottom of the info window and expand the "Ownership & Permissions" tab. In this section, expand the "Details" tab. If the lock icon is in the locked position, click it to unlock it. Change "Owner" to your user name. If requested, enter your system password at this point. Close the info window. This step lets you modify the libRaw.dylib file.
    6) Complete step 5 for the Raw.plist file.
    7) Copy the Raw.plist file from the "Place In System Folder" folder from the patch to the Resources folder. It will ask you if you wnt to overwrite the existing file. Click "Replace".
    8) Open a new finder window and browse to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder.
    * 9) Backup the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file *
    10) Copy the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file from the "Place In Home Directory" folder from the patch to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder. Click "replace" if it asks you.
    11) Here's the tricky part. Download a HEX editor if you don't have one. I used 0xED. It is free and can be downloaded from
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29521
    12) Open the libRaw.dylib file from the Resources folder in your HEX editor.
Note: This is your original libRaw.dylib file from your /System/Library/...../Resources/ folder, NOT the file from the patch.
Use the Find function and search for the string "Pentax *ist DS". Make sure you are using "Search Type: Text" (or equivilent in your editor) and that you use proper case. When you find this string, change the "S" in the "DS" to an "L". The string should now look like "Pentax *ist DL". Use the "Find Next" function to find the next instance of "Pentax *ist DS". Again, change the "S" to an "L". There should be two total instances that you need to change. Save the file and exit the editor.
    13) Open Disk Utility and repair permissions. This will set the raw.plist and libRaw.dylib files back to their original permissions.
    14) Reboot the system.
    15) You should now be able to view .PEF files natively in Aperture and iPhoto. I appologize in advance for any typos. Let me know how this works, as this is my first tutorial of this nature.
    Macbook 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It would appear that my last post was a moot point as the 10.4.7 update adds support for the *ist DL. It's nice to have it biult into the operating system now.

  • I have a lot image files on external WD hard drive USB powered .i just purchased aperture and have initated an import into aperture of all photos on thatdrive.it has about 1.75gig of images. how long will that take--been 24 hours already???

I have had several issues so far with my new aperture program, and this is the fifth time i have tired to collect all of my images (or nearly all) onto a single drive and be able to file them from my mac notebook...obviously one huge problem is that every timie the dog walks buy he knocks the cord out and i basiclaly have to start over again...
but i have taped the cords in an managed to fly across country while keeping the whole import running---up near 24 hours constant now...
anyway, i ahve a bunch of questions but my main one is, i think from reaeding up here that it could take a fulll week to finish this transfer (even though i beleieve i made it very clear that i only want to index the fiels from their current location and not to move any of them around at all....
the only rush really is that i have my daughter's graduation pictuers and everyone wants to see htem but i don't really want to cancel this transfer after i have already spent 24 hours!!!
    sorry to write so much...
    thanks for any ideas....
    Max

    Max,
It really can take very long to import and process so many images - I would not dare to make a prediction.
Can you open the Activity Viewer?
From Aperture's main menu bar: Window > Show Activity.
This window will tell you the filename of the image that is currently being processed.
if you are seeing, that the import is still far from being finished, you might to pause certain tasks directly from this panel, like the generation of previews or scanning for faces. I'd let the import run, if you see that it is making progress.
Have you enabled very time-consuming options, like the generation of high resolution previes or scanning for faces and places? if yes, and the import is not making any progress at all, I'd disable thes options in the Aperture preferences for the initial import. You can add these later for the projects where you want to use these features.

  • I want to get my original photos out of aperture and can't seem to find a way to do it, I can't locate an original folder, I understand that images I have edited won't be exported I just want to have a copy of my files out of the system

I want to have my photo files all in one place.  I want them out of the Apeture libary structure.

    Hello Joe,
do you want to continue using Aperture or do you want to manage your images yourself?
If you want to continue using Aperture, but to be able to browse your images without launching Aperture, then relocate your master image files:
Select all images in the Browser
Use the File menu:     File -> Relocate master        and select a folder, where you want to store the master image files.
Be warned, that you must not edit, change, tag these files in any way, unless using Aperture itself to do the modification. Otherwise the link between master image files and version in Aperture may be broken.
Make sure you have a working backup of your Aperture Library before you do that.
But why do you want access to your images outside Aperture? Aperture as a digital asset management system is supposed to be able to manage you images in versatile a way, to give you access to all information you need. So what are you missing?

  • Aperture does not recognize that there are images to be imported on an SD card. My workaround is to copy the images from the ST card to a folder and then import the images from the folder. Aperture also imports incredibly slowly after the update to 3.4

Aperture does not recognize that there are images to be imported on an SD card. My workaround is to copy the images from the SD card to a folder and then import the images from the folder. Aperture also imports incredibly slowly after the update to 3.4

Check your Import settings in the Import Panel, i.e. all that might exclude the image type you want to import:
If you did not exclude any file types, and still Aperture will not import, remove your ImageCapture preferences fro your user library:
To remove the image capture preferences:
If Aperture is running, quit Aperture,  and log off and on again.
Open your user library from the Finder's Go menu: Hit Command Shift G (⌘⇧G) and then type in: ~/Library/Preferences/  then hit return.
In the window that opens remove "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist"
and look into the subfolder "ByHost": if there are files named com.apple.ImageCapture  something .plist  remove them too.
    then try again.
And if that still does not help, remove the Aperture preferences as well:
    ~/Library/Preferences/aperture.plist

P.S. in MacOS Lion and later the user library ~/Library is hidden by default.
You can reveal it also  from the Finder's "Go" menu:
Finder > Go,   then hold down the options ⌥ key, until the Library appears in the drop-down menu, select it and open the Library folder. Then go to the "Preferences".

  • Changing master images in aperture and iphoto

    hi
am i right in thinking that there is no way of altering my original (master) images (located in my 'pictures' folder) in both aperture ans iphoto? I want to be able to see the changes in the original images in this folder, and have these altered images available for other applications, such as itunes. i don't want to have to export altered images from aperture/iphoto, but rather just have one copy of each image. will i need to use preview for basic changes or a third party application such as graphic converter/photoshop for more advanced permanent changes to the originals?
    thanks

    hi
i have checked the following options: 'maintain previews for project' for my project, and 'share previews with ilife and iwork' in the general preferences. i have then altered the colours of an image in an album for this project and the thumbnail and image in aperture update OK, but nothing changes in finder, and when i open the image in preview it it is still the same as the master image, rather than the image with changed colour. am i doing something wrong?
    thanks

Eh la Pastenague! Je savais que tu était léthale pour l'homme mais ce sont pluôt les machines à pommes qui devraient te craindre. Merci! Solved.
    For future reference.
My TC is a 3rd gen.
I actually had to reset to standard defaults not only once but twice. The first time I simply returned to my old profile but that only led to the same message error on the network settings (i.e. IP by default, cannot connect to the internet). Therefore the second time around I kept my profile as backup and re-created a new one plus a guest one.
The airport utility then signaled to issues remaining:
    1) Internet access was cut - this I solved by simply reseting the cable modem
    2) There were no DNS Servers - I simply copied the ones I had from the previous setup and it worked
    I did have AppleCare....
I'm online again and I hope for good.
    Thanks a lot
PS. a small tip - I made captures of all my settings in Network settings, Airport Utility and Network utility using Grab in case of ... if anything it is just handy to get back settings that your are missing when setting up a new configuration

I’m new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW+JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

How did you import from iPhoto? If you saw the Import panel with raw -jpeg pairs, then you probably did not import your iPhoto library as library, but as files, and then you will see plenty of duplicates - previews, thumbnails, originls, edited versions. If that should be the case, it would be better to delete the import from iPhoto and to import your iPhoto library again, but this time using "File > Import > Library".
Only that would require compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture.  What are your Aperture and iPhoto version numbers?

  • Aperture black and white filters making images blotchy

    Hello All!
I'm having some odd issues with Aperture and using the black and white filters: mainly red and orange filters. I have tested this with different cameras (all raw) including Nikon D700, Olympus E-M5, Canon 5D mk3, Nikon D800; all exibit the same issue. I have also had a friend test this on Lightroom and the problem did not appear.
Picture a landscape with a blue sky. Upon adding a red filter, and sometimes orange, the dramatic dark sky one would expect with such filters becomes blotchy. It looks somewhat like bad JPEG compression or noise from high ISO images but these pictures are all generally ISO 100 or 200. Sadly, this prevents me from printing these images so I've had to find other ways of processing them. Even when exported as a 16-bit TIFF, the problem persists.
Anyone have any thoughts? Experienced this themselves? Thanks for any thoughts!

Thanks Kirby... I have checked the channels but perhaps there is something I'm missing. Here is a screenshot of a random image I have but it shows the issue well. These are at 100%, ISO 200, red, orange, no filter (respectively). The histogram is from the original. No other post processing done. The red is the worst offender... the orange isn't as bad but it can be worse on certain images.

  • Aperture and iPhone Image Size

Hello, i recently tried to sync some photos to Aperture from my iPhone and they came up really small on screen. When i hit the zoom button nothing happens. I'm new to this and would appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction.

    Hi Simon,
First, it's best to start a new topic for a new, unrelated question.
As for your question, just to clarify -- you have *brown folders* inside your projects, right? Well, it's not clear to me how you get images (versions) into those brown folders directly. Perhaps you have albums in the brown folders, and the albums display the images?
In any case, I don't know of any way to export the images and retain the structure you see with the brown folders. But I have a different approach that should solve your problem.
Most people use one "project" for each separate "shoot". In your case, that might mean each hotel would be its own project. You can create a *blue folder* called, for example, "2009-05 Greece Hotel Shoot", and keep all the projects inside that folder. That would be a common way to use Aperture, and it has the advantage that you can export the entire blue folder and have each project within the folder stored in separate folders. Aperture gives you quite a bit of flexibility for how to format the folder names, too.
    Hope This Helps,
    Jim

I have nearly 9,000 Images on my I Mac and I wish to move them over to a 2TB external  hard drive and still be able to access them from Aperture and or iPhoto. How is the best way of doing this?

Here is how to do it with iPhoto:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2506
As for Aperture, you'll need to do a search on the support website yourself because the result is a download so I couldn't post a link - the instructions are in the user manual. I believe the settings are within Aperture's Preferences.
