Aperture and computer unresponsive with photostream

Hello every one, this will be my last ditch attempt with aperture before binning it.
Its been very unstable for me for sometime now many months on both an imac and macbook, updates from apple seem to be making matters worse.
To cap it all photostream seems to kill it entirely. Most of the time it seems to either be processing images or doing something with photostream. Whilst this is happening aperture is either dog slow or totally unresponsive and infact half the time my entire mac seems like its about to melt down.
Aperture as a programme seems to be falling over pretty rapidly for me, I don't know if anyone else feels that way. In an attempt to mitigate the issues I expereince all the time I have given up using raw, because these knock it over, on an imac quad core i7 with 8 gig of ram. Lion certainly has not helped and with photostream compounding it, I am finding productivity with aperture sliding.
IS anyone else having issues with this 'professional' software now?
Yes I have rebuilt the database and library many many times, fixed permissions, done all those things that make no difference what so ever. I repprossed all masters and thumbs before going to be one night and this helped for a while.
Aperture on my macbook is game over really, its just too slow and unresponsive to be considered viable.

Would referenceing be a mistake or might this eleviate some of the issues.
That depends; referencing will help, if you do not have enough free space on your system drive and you can free your disk this way. But you should connect your external drive to a fast port - fire wire, thunderbolt ...
If you on the other hand allready have all the disk space you need, this might may things worse, if your external disk is slow.
You really need to find out, what Aperture is doing; that is why I suggested to show the Activity window and watch the Console Window (Utilities -> Console). The performance you see is very untypical for a moderate sized Library.
I suspect your Aperture LIbrary may be corrupted in some way or your Preferences are faulty.
How to solve such problems is described in this support article.
Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
Try to repair the permissions in your Library, and if that dos not help, repair the library as described in the article.
Post back, if that does not solve the problem.

Léonie
P.S. I would not change the type of the library to referenced, while there may be a problem with the library that need repairing.

  • White screen of death and computer halts with ATI 4870 in Boot Camp

    Hi!
I have just received the ATI Radeon 4870 for my Mac Pro (Early 2008)and have upgraded my Leopard to 10.5.7 and works fine on the Mac side. When I reboot and hold the command key I can see my MAC and my BOOT CAMP 2 options as always before. When I click on boot camp I get a white screen with a black frome around it and there is NO hard disk activity and nothing happens no matter how long I leave the computer alone. Before I had no problem booting into my boot camp loaded with vista 64 bit. I have another partition with parallels and that is fine but not this boot camp partition.
I am using ONLY this card in the system. I removed the NVIDIA card.
ALso I tried putting in my Vista 64bit DvD into the drive and rem=booting and see the option when hold the option key to go into MAC,WINDOWS,DVD.... When I select DvD and computer adjust to work in a windows enviroment again the system halts. SO I believe it has nothing whatsoever to to do with drivers inside Vista. It would have to be something that needs upgrading for bootcamp to allow for this video card to work on Bootcamp?
Again I have the latest updates of the OS.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for all your time!

CorkyO recommended what I would do: install old card, uninstall any graphics drivers and delete them, and use Driver Sweeper as well. So that there is nothing there.
If you have a raw unformatted drive, pull everything else and leave that in.... as if it was a PC and starting for the first time.
    Don't use Boot Camp Assistant.
Don't put Windows on the same drive as OS X.
Do try Windows 7.7100 RC 64-bit.
Apple has not posted a link to graphics drivers since early 2008.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1442 - "Not found" and WAY out of date (167.xx) which would be foolish and obviously would not support Vista or 4870.
I would pull the Vista drive for another reason, too, so you can start fresh and import or access the files on it later.
Vista is sensitive to the presence and drive position of where the drive and OS was, the master boot record and such which I confess to not fully understanding.
Which is another reason to install Windows with no other hard drives present.
You keep saying you used COMMAND rather than OPTION key to restart into Windows, so figure typo/slip.
I would RESET SMC and ZAP PRAM/NVRAM. Force the device tree to get rebuilt. And that is important to OS X - suppose to do so but the G5s it never worked properly on its own.
There is a reason why people that play with graphics cards and drivers use Driver Sweeper, it works, and it is essential at times.
Early boot is under the control of EFI. I don't know what if anything Apple does (I don't trust the firmware updates that were suppose to provide better Windows compatibility only to learn it was mostly for XP and not Vista, and that it added a full 30 seconds to my boot routine into Windows - where EFI + Boot Camp does make Windows think there is a traditional BIOS.... my best summary guess.
Work with the only factual symptom: pulling one card and putting in 2nd is causing a problem.

  • Aperture and Canon 5D with wireless adapter

I have a 15" macbook pro, and I want to get a 20" iMac to do this, if I can, but when I shoot in the studio, I use my wireless adapter on my Canon 5D to transmit my photos to a Mac. Is there a way that I can use aperture to monitor a directory, and display the new photos durring a shoot, so I can review them right away. I can use the canon software when im teathered, but defeats the wireless adapter, and I really love aperture.
    Thanks!

    Go here:
    http://www.automator.us/aperture/
and get the Aperture Hot Folder script.
    That should do it.

  • Was in iphoto and computer froze with spinning wheel.  I have tried to force quit and it won't even do that.  I can not even turn it off by pressing the power switch.  what should I do - unplug it?

I was in iphoto and tried to edit a photo and computer froze.  I then tried to do a force quit but it still didn't do anything.  I tried this a few times.  After 5 hours I tried to shut off computer and it didn't do anything.  Should I just unplug it?

yes. the solution of last resort. now, as to why your computer froze when you were trying to edit a photo in iPhoto, I can't help you much. Maybe a lack of ram, maybe something else running in the background,  hogging system resources. try running disc utility and repairing preferences. Also check activity monitor while your machine is running so you can find out if there is a hog or not. if force quit doesn't work, there's not much else you can do. I'll leave it to someone else to suggest other possible solutions

  • TS3989 Photos are ok in aperture and iphoto but in photostream on ipad and iphone the top of all portrait photos is chopped off. I tried switching photostream off and on but got the same. Only happened with photos added today, all past photos are fine

I have never had any problems before but all portrait photos added today have the top chopped off. For example , people's heads are missing or roofs or buildings are chopped off. Photos are fine on the camera and on my mac in iphoto and aperture. Switched off photostream on my ipad...all photos were deleted. Switched photostream back on and all photos uploaded again and portrait photos are cropped again

It sounds like while trying to import the photos with insufficient disk space those image files were damaged and not copied fully.  Now that you have sufficient space (a minimum of 10 GB is recommended) the latest imports are good.
What do you get if you export one of the problem photos out of iPhoto as Kind=Original and try to open it with Preview.  If it appears the same then there's nothing you can to do recover them.

  • Computer unresponsive with disk activity, even when disk is USB

    Hi,
I've always had issues with responsiveness with Linux when there is disk activity (several distro's, same hardware), whereas a Windows XP installation reacts very snappily. When I have a torrent client open, Mplayer keeps hanging a few times a minute (even more often when the download is going fast (2 MB/s)).
Recently I migrated to ext4 in the hopes that would fix it, but it didn't. It's also not something as simple as a DMA issue (because it's SATA). Disk throughput is about 80 MB/s, which is OK.
Anyway, currently, I'm performing this on a USB disk:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=10M
And even then the computer is almost unusable, which it shouldn't be, because the internal disks are not used for this. And some time back when I was copying an AVI to a USB stick, it was utterly unusable.
Maybe it's a driver issue, because I can't imagine the normal schedulers being so horrible, but I can't say.
My disk controller can't be accessed with AHCI (there is no 'native' option in the BIOS), yet NCQ is enabled:
    # dmesg|grep -i ncq
    [ 1.313605] ata3.00: 2930275055 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
    [ 1.800338] ata4.00: 2930277168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
    [ 2.324738] ata6.00: 488395055 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
I have kernel 3.1.1-1-ARCH, so I should have the 'wonder patch'.
    Hardware:
    CPU: Athlon X2 3800+ (2GHz dual core).
    RAM: 2 GB DDR400 RAM.
    Chipset: Nvidia nForce 4 ultra.
Disks (in MD RAID1): 2 WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1 (disks have changed over the years) and 1 Seagate disk (which contains windows and is spun down in Linux, to prevent noise).
I disabled the (self-destructing) head parking feature of the caviar green disks with WDidle by setting the timeout to max (disabling the head parking with WDidle actually lets it trigger constantly, that's why I chose this way).

Anybody know what might be causing this?

I recently tried to play around with the schedulers and I found out that using "deadline" for my internal drives, "cfq"  for my optical drive and "noop" for everything else. I tried copying a load of small files on my USB flashdrive while playing a movie from the optical drive and the system felt very responsive.
I've been playing some more, and you're right in that it seems that with the internal disks at deadline, the system is a lot more responsive. Previously, I put the external disk I was zeroing at deadline too, but that (I know now) made it worse again.
I run a 3.2-rc5 kernel which seems to help considerably though.
Has there been any specific change in that kernel to cause that?
BTW, I noticed that the NCQ queue on your drives is of 0 length, try setting it o 31 like this (as root).
I always wondered about the NCQ queue. In pages about NCQ that I found, the dmesg also reported a queue of 0. I just always figured it meant how many commands it currently had, being zero at boot time.
When I do "cat /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth" it always says one, regardless of disk activity.

  • Aperture and RAW support with Canon EOS 60D

Got my new Canon EOS 60D yesterday. But Aperture does not support the new RAW photos from the EOS 60D yet.
    Anyone with the same problem?
When is Apple updating the RAW support for the 60D in Aperture?

Well, DNGs don't actually contain all the data of the original raw file, so that could be an issue.
As an example, the focus point functionality of Aperture 3.0 doesn't work with files converted to DNG, as the camera-specific information has been stripped from the file by Adobe. I don't know whether the DNG format can actually hold that info or not, but as of today it doesn't.
Apple historically has tended to support the new SLR cameras from Canon and Nikon, so I wouldn't be surprised if support came along shortly. That said, buying a camera the day it's available and expecting immediate support for its raw format is not all that reasonable. The vendors providing raw support don't necessarily have access to pre-release versions of the cameras (in general), so there's going to be some time necessary to develop and QA the support for the new format.

  • Aperture and EXIF information with EOS 300D RAW (.CRW) files

When I look at the EXIF metadata in Aperture, it shows some things completely wrong:
Shutter speeds over 1 second are shown as 1.0 seconds
The Serial number of the camera is totally wrong
    There is no Exposure compensation
the Color Space is wrong (I use sRGB wich Aperture reports as Adobe RGB)
There are 8 pixels missing (see another thread)
There is no information about flash usage

  • Password Protect Libraries? on Aperture. on iCloud. with PhotoStream?

    Question: How?
How to password protect photo libraries....
    On Aperture.
    On iCloud
    With PhotoStream.
    (and iPhoto)
    Any knowledge about this?
Extranous note: I DO read manuals but now got abut 3,333 pages of manuals for varrious programs yet to read and keep getting dizzy, dizzy with it all.
Extra Extranous comments: I got a pic of myself eating 15 pounds of potatoes and I want to keep it as The Before in my Before and After Diet Manual...but don't want my wife looking at it again and don't want it to suddenly got Photo Streaming and wind up on iCloud and next thing you know it's viral and folks are launging at me on Leno....uknow the tragic consequences that could ensue.

You can't password protect an Aperture or iPhoto library. iCloud and photostream (really the same thing)  don;t contain libraries they contain individual images in a stream. The stream is protected by your apple id just as your system is protected by your login password.
If you give access to your account to others they will be able to access whatever you can access.
You can do some things to the libraries such as encrypting them or else turning on filevault.

Thanks for that, on the sync via iTunes, when my iphone is connected to iTunes via USB my photos tab says my iphone but I can never see any pics there. If I press Sync it still doesn't show anything.
Correction from my original post, it only comes up with PhotoStream on my computer when I'm connected via USB.

Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this?

First, uninstall "SuperTV" (whatever that is) according to the developer's instructions. It isn't working and it's filling the log with noise.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Aperture and iPhoto can't connect to Photostream

I think it's happened since maybe the most recent OSX upgrade, but now I seem unable to connect to Photostream with either iPhoto or Aperture on my MacBook Air. Oddly, with the same software and settings, my old MacBook Pro 17" has no trouble connecting. What could be the issue? Whenever I try to enable Photostream, I get the "connecting..." dialog for a few seconds, then "Aperture (or iPhoto) is unable to connect to Photostream."

I am indeed shown as "Admin" in accounts. All but one of the other boxes in iCloud's box column are checked, the one omitted one being "Back to my Mac." They don't seem to get changed by the PhotoStream issue.
This is a strange issue. I have an older MacBook Pro, circa 2009, running what seems to be the same software and settings, and it does fine with PhotoStream. Moreover, even this machine ran fine with PhotoStream when I first started using it, but something happened along the way to defeat it. I don't know, maybe upgrading the system version from original 10.7.1 or so to the current 10.7.4 has something to do with it?
Just today, I upgraded iPhoto to the 9.3.1 version, but still get the same issue recurring...

  • I have been having troubles with photostream in aperture

first i can't use it with aperture, it has been saying that it cannot access my information and that i have to check my login status even though i am logged in and review the information still it keeps sayingand as you can see in this images i'm logged into my account even though it keeps telling me to review my status i don't know where else i can review my status or log information so anything would be awesome, if there is something kind of troubleshoot for icloud photostream or is this just me having this problem and one more thing photostream is aperently not affected on iphoto but i don't use iphoto nor i don't want to use it for photostream is there something i am missing because when i go into the preferences menu it doesn't allow me to check into that box even though i grey it out in the iphoto menu.
anything would be helpful i kinda have this OC syndrome going on and this thing really bugs me lol

    See: iCloud: Photo Stream Troubleshooting
Your screenshots do not show, if you also edited the settings behind the "options" button  in the "System Preferences > iCloud" panel. Did you activate "My Photo Stream" in the PhotoStream options? Make sure that both the My Photo Stream and Shared Photo Streams checkboxes are selected.
And is your network active, while you are trying to connect to the Photo Stream?
BTW: Your screenshot shows your Apple ID email account. That is not safe.
Did the Photo Stream images download to your Mac? You can view all your Photo Stream images in your User Library: The images are stored in the subfolders of
    ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/
As you probably know, the User Library is hidden since Mac OS X Lion.
You can reveal it from the Finder's "Go" menu in the main menu bar:
    Finder > Go
Then hold down to options-key ⌥, until Library appears in the drop-down menu. Select it and open the Library, then navigate to the "Application Support" subfolder, then "iLifeAssetManagement", then "Assets".
If all fails, copy and save all images you find there, then delete this folder, log off and log on, then try again.

  • Aperture and Photostream activation

    Hi,
I had a problem with some Photostream photos which were not displayed in Aperture. The Update from early this month fixed that problem. But now, I have another problem: Sometimes (after rebooting the system for example), Aperture asks me to activate Photostream although it was activated before. It is activated in System Prefs and in Aperture Prefs. And something else: Some photos are missing. I took them with my iPhone but they are not appearing in the Photostream folder, not in Aperture, not on my iPhone. Anyone got an idea of what could be wrong?

See if Thomas Emmerich's post in this thread Photostream and Aperture does help.
Nnd, just to make sure: Are you using iPhoto too on the same machine, or switch between Aperture libraries? Each switch wolul turn the PhotoStream off.

  • What to do with Aperture and iPhoto now?

Now that I have Photos on my computer (OS X 10.10.3), can I uninstall/delete iPhoto and Aperture?
I have no need for their functionality, since I will just use Photos (to replace iPhoto functions) and Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for more advanced functions (including what I could do with Aperture).
To clarify, I should say, is it safe to delete the two apps (iPhoto and Aperture) without affecting my photo library?

I mean the apps. They don't take up 'minimal storage', instead aperture and iphoto apps take up around 2.5gb of space. I have a large SSD, but I would still like this space back.
Make a bootable clone or another full backup of your SSD. You may not be able to ever reinstall iPhoto or Aperture otherwise, since they have been pulled from the App Store.
If you should discover later, that the migration of your libraries has been faulty and you need to repeat it after repairing your libraries, you will be out of luck.
Remember, it is is just one day after the first release of Photos as version 1.0.  There are very likely some bugs and I would not burn all bridges before the library has been thoroughly tested and you are very confident, that this release is working well on your Mac.
My concern is that there is a shared library, and by deleting the two other apps, the ones the new one relies on, that the there might be some data loss. I wanted clarification. If an app is intended to replace two other apps, then why doesn't it replace it?
The links between the library are hard links. As long as one of the libraries is still referencing one of the linked image files, that file will not be deleted from the disk.   Six Colors: The (hard) link between Photos and iPhoto
