Aperture and Custom Sized Books

I am starting with my own little publishing company – private, precious coffetable books. I have my own printer/bookbinder, i.e. I don‘t want to use any of the affiliated online printers that Aperture offers plug-ins for. As of now I would work my layouts with InDesign and work the fotos with Photoshop but I am very interested in the automation and integration of Aperture. So here is my main concern.
Is it possible to create my very own templates, i.e. overall format, grids of fotos, text, other elements? I found this question in this forum from 2008 and was wondering, if by now and with Aperture 3 this shouldn’t be possible and easily so. Maybe there is even a tutorial somewhere.
Thanks for your help. Goso

This site Customizing Aperture Books might be  some help. There is lot you can do in Aperture itself as far as customizing book layouts before you need to resort to creating your own templates.

  • What is your export process for printing custom-sized books?

I will be printing my first custom-sized book created in Aperture.
Anyone have much experience doing this?
I am assuming that exporting to pdf and then sending that file to print is the process, but I'm wondering if the compression will affect the image quality enough to be concerned for a 9''x9'' book?

    Lots of experience here.
I outsource albums either as single page or double spread. Unfortunately Aperture only allows single page export, not as a full spread (required by some printers).
Unfortunately the Export options are a little limited, so read on
If you click on the Print button for your custom sized book, you'll get a dialog. Choose the PDF button at the bottom and a bunch of options will appear.
If you just want to export a proof for a client to review, you can select Save PDF to Aperture. The files will import as 200dpi JPEGs / TIFFs depending upon the option you choose. You can then export to a sharing service / web album etc.
If you want to export at a different dpi then DON'T choose the Save PDF to folder as JPEG option... again you'll get just 200dpi images. So what you can do is choose the Save as PDF option. When you choose that it will export the whole book as single pages in a PDF, with the embedded JPEGs (fully quality jpeg 12) at 350dpi (I know as I've checked this)....
You can then do 2 things:
    1. For services that require a single pages, run an automator action to run through the PDF and export the images at your desired DPI and change the colour profile (eg sRGB). Your images are then exported to the same folder. Here's the action: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/117989/Save%20PDF%20to%20Folder%20as%20JPEG.zip
    2. For services that require a double page spread instead, run an automator action to run through the PDF, change the colour profile and DPI and then import to Aperture.
What I do is have an entirely separate project called Album Proofs and import all images into there. When the action runs, it will ask where to put the images - place them in Album Proofs. I then have a custom book size that is twice the width of the album you are creating (e.g. if making a 12x9, the size is 24x9) with no margins or spacing. Then create a template album (you can reuse by right clicking and selecting Duplicate Book) that has two images per page, each image taking up EXACTLY half of the page (again no margins or spacing). I then drag the images I imported into this template, then auto-fill unplaced images. Your images are then layed out as spreads... So now what you do is re-export using the Save as PDF print option. Then run the action described in 1 above.
Here's the action: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/117989/Save%20PDF%20to%20Aperture%20as%20JPEG.zip . If it doesn't work use the other action above and just import manually.
    Hope this helps

  • I have created a book  in Photo Essay that is extra large (10 by 13") and I just realized that I want a 8 1/2"by 11" book.  Can I transfer all the pages to the smaller sized book.  If so, how?  Thanks so much for your help.

I have created an extra large (10"-13") Photo Essay style iBook in Aperture and just realized that all my other iBooks are 8.5"-11".  How can I transfer all the formatted pages to the smaller book size without having to start over?  Thanks so much for your help.
    Apple Phan

    Apple Phan,
that will require some extra work. If you change the book size, some of your edits will probably be lost, because texts and photos that will not fit the smaller layout will be removed. The best you can do will be to save your current book, so you can compare. Try the following:
Create a PDF preview of  the current version of the book and save the PDF, see:  iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture
Duplicate the book: File > Duplicate
Then change the Book Sizeof the copy  (from the Theme Button) and compare, what is missing, hopefully not to much.

Why doesn't apple have a file of events that ties to the iCal program and the Address book file? By having that relationship it seems that you could call up all of the events tied to a customer while in the address book or likewise call up all of the events tied to a contact that was in the iCal program as a scheduled meeting. Even in the to do's you could easily look back at the events tied to an individual so as to bring yourself up to speed with what you were doing with the individual in mind.

  • Unify aperture and iphoto libraries: the book (tricky) issue

I had been in the process of migrating from iPhoto to Aperture for a while now.
I imported iPhoto library in Aperture few monthes ago and am now using only Aperture.
Everything is fine for two things:
    - I could not import the books (format is not compatible), so i had to keep the iPhoto library
    - I didn't want to duplicate the orignals , so they are still in iPhoto library
With Aperture 3.3, the library could be unified with iPhoto
I would like to move all originals to Aperture library and still be able to open from iPhoto (so far, easy) but also keep the iPhoto books (which as far as i know are still incompatible with aperture books formats)
In other words, i want one aperture library, including masters, and I want to be able to open it from iPhoto, and still keep the old books (that were built from the initial iPhoto library) in iPhoto
    Any clue ?

    Hi Leonie,
You're really full of resources (not sure if this french expression translates well in english, but you get the idea) !
I finally found a way, not the most elegant one, but it's working:
    0. Open each book in iPhoto. Delete in the book non-used photos of the book (in project list, choose book, then choose photos in the toolbar in the bottom, display non placed photos, delete). Now books projects only contain photos actually used in the book. (this step may not be necessary, but it speeds the process)
    0. bis: Backup your Aperture library. don't forget to stop also any automatic backup process (like time machine)
    1. Open the iPhoto library with Aperture (remember i had already migrated to Aperture 3,3 & iPhoto 9, which makes the libraries compatibles)
    2. Export each of your books as a phototheque (right click on the book in the inspector navigator/ choose export impression project as a phototheque). Give specific name, for example "project x"
    3. Open first created book phototheque in aperture
    4. Tag photos of the phototheque with a specific keyword, for example "book x"
    5. Close phototheque for "book x" and resume on step 3 for other phototheques
    6. Open default aperture Library
    7. Import first phototheque, merge with Aperture Library
    8. Normally you get duplicates, especially if you have added metadata or edited the photos in aperture since you created the books in iPhoto. At least that's what happened to me
    9. You can now grab the recent metadata on the one that was already in Aperture and apply it to the imported one. To do that, create a smart album with the keyword "project x"; then move all new imported events from iPhoto to the event where they belong in aperture. Then in the smart album, for a specific picture when you choose "display in the project" (i have defined a shortcut) you are in the event where the duplicate photo also sits. Choose cmd shift C on the photo with metadata, cmd shift V on the photo with the tag  "project x" to transfer the metadata. You can delete the first one, except if you had edited the original differently in the book and in aperture and want to keep both. You still have to re-enter the faces on the imported one
    10. You can erase the tag "project x"
    11. Go back to step 7 for other books
    12. Check you can see your books in iphoto when opening aperture library with iphoto. You can now consolidate the aperture library and migrate all referenced iPhoto pics inside the aperture library
    13. you can erase iPhoto Library and other books phototheques created in step 2
You now have one unified library, that you can use in aperture and iPhoto, with your old iPhoto books in it.
(you also have lost a few hours...)

  • Feature Request: Photo Borders and Copying in Books

These are a few related feature requests. If anyone knows of a better way to do this with the current software, then I would love to hear it.
When making books I like to have borders around the pictures of various colors (usually black or white) and various widths. In Apeture this is a pain to do. I fiqured out that I could fake it by making a picture box and inserting a solid black picture into it and then creating a smaller picture box in front of it for my real photo. This might be tolerable if I could at least then select both picture boxes and their contents to copy and then onto other pages as a template that I can resize as needed.
Ideally I would love to be able to copy and paste multiple elements on a book page and I would like to be able to define photo borders. Any chance of seeing this in the near future?
    Thanks,
    Sean

Thanks for the reply. You are right, the cut and paste works fine, it just didn't work the way I expected it to. Maybe that is a GUI design thing to consider. I was actually trying to click and drag a selection box like you might do in iPhoto to select multiple images that are right beside each other. This doesn't work at all in Aperture, but your method does work just fine.
I agree with the other poster that some additional features like:
    Photo Borders
    Export to PSD (with layers)
Custom page sizes and Custom themes
would be very nice and start to make that tool truley useful.
Thanks for a really nice product. Keep up the good work and stay ahead of the pack.

  • Custom sized prints

I have been trying unsuccessfully for hours to print a panorama on custom sized paper (5x20). I was able to print panoramas on the earlier version of Aperture (1.5) with my Epson R2400, but cannot on 2.1. In the print dialog box, I set paper size as custom 5x20. In the layout options, I have tried scaling to "custom 5x20", "fit entire page" and "fit entire image". I have tried every paper tray/paper feed on the printer and the printer will not print. Watching the print que in the printer utility while I hit the print button - it reads "printer ready", then "data being sent to printer", then the printer stops without ever starting. I try and resume the printer but it immediately reverts back to a "Stopped" mode.
Has anyone had any success printing panoramas? Does anyone have any suggestions? Help please. This is so frustrating.
    Thanks.

    Chris and Allen,
Thanks for your comments. I tried everything I could think of working only in Aperture, including Allen's suggestions and nothing worked. After a lot of trial and error, I finally came up with a work around using iPhoto. Here are the steps:
    1. Go into iPhoto and click on "page setup" in the "file" menu.
    2. Click on "paper size" and then click "manage custom size".
    3. Define the custom size (for margins, I selected the option to let the Epson 2400 set the margins), name it and save it.
    4. Close out of iPhoto and go into Aperture.
    5. In Aperture, in the "file menu" go to "print image".
    6. In the "Paper Size" dialogue box, the newly defined custom size created in iPhoto will appear. Select that as the paper size option.
    7. In the "Layout Option" dialogue box, select "fit entire page"
    8. In the "Border Option" dialogue box, set the appropriate margins.
    9. Finish with the "printer settings" of choice and then print.
Its a cumbersome process, but it doesn't really take that long and I have printed several panoramas now using this work around.

  • Quality of aperture vs iphoto for books?

I currently use Iphoto and like it.  We recently got married and are now expecting our first child, so between wanting to make a beautiful book documenting our honeymoon and books to come of the baby/family, I'm wondering if its worth upgradining to aperturue to improve the quality of photos.
I know aperture does more and has more options, but as far as printing photos and having books made, is the quality better? I cannot find this information anywhere. Or does aperture just offer more layouts, etc, but pritining quality is the same as iphoto?
Since some of these books are once in a lifetime documenation such as our honeymoon, I'm looking for the best quality and most flexible to make an amazing book and tell the story.  Just trying to figure out whether its worht upgrading to aperture or I can do everything I need to in iPhoto.
    Thanks for any advice.

Have a look at this page: http://www.apple.com/aperture/what-is.html  - scroll down all the way to "Elegant Photo Books" and watch the video.
The genuine Aperture books have more custom layout options than iPhoto books. The print quality is the same as for iPhoto books.
But you can use third party book plug-ins, to order very expensive, high-end books, see:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/resources/plugins.html#books

  • Aperture and iPhoto should use the same library

    Hi all,
It seems that there is a lot of conversation about moving photos between Aperture and iPhoto. For example, some like iPhotos slideshow better but still require Apertures adjustment options. Still others have tried, to no avail, to use Aperture as iPhoto's external editor.
Personally, I have a large iPhoto library with most photos tagged with keywords. I have just started using Aperture and am yet to decide if its extra features are useful for a novice photographer like myself. Other than the price, I see no reason not to use Aperture instead of iPhoto but I would want to import my entire iPhoto library into Aperture.
My question, however, is why we need to 'import' from one app to the other. Without understanding how the aperture / iphoto databases work, I would assume there is no fundamental reason why Aperture could not simply open an existing iPhoto library and visa versa. They both support RAW, keywords, books etc. And while I am sure there are some deviations in the databases, surely each app could simply ignore the features it does not understand.
Is this something that anyone else has considered or think would be good. I would imagine that the easier it is for customers to upgrade from iPhoto to Aperture the better. Does Apple plan on supporting this in the future or is the import option 'good enough'.
    Cheers

Can I and if so how do I best set up Aperture as main app. (master) with iPhoto as sub app that accesses the same library to sort through, look at, order books, etc.
Simply set the Preferences to 'Share Previews with iLife Applications' in Aperture. Then go to iPhoto -> File -> Show Aperture Library. A media browser will open and you can drag the pics from the Browser to the iPhoto Window. Note: You're getting the Aperture Previews not Masters. Note too that if you set iPhoto to Referenced mode (iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced) then you won't use double the disk space.
+Remember though, you are not accessing the Aperture Library. If you make changes in the Aperture Library (Re-edit the shots) after bringing pics to iPhoto, those changes are not reflected in iPhoto.+
This is what William means when he says the iPhoto does not access the Aperture Library.

I'm using a Mac.  I "upgraded" to LR5 from LR4.  I do not want to be a member of the "Creative Cloud".  I just want to use the software I purchased, specifically to upload to my SmugMug account.  Is there a way to use an add-on to do this?  Aperture and LR4 were easy but I'm finding it impossible without subscribing to CC.

Sorry, maybe I don't understand, but why do you feel compelled to subscribe to CC if you already have a permanent Lightroom 5 licence?
For the SmugMug plugin, a simple Google search ("smugmug lightroom plugin") gives this link to download the plugin:  http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/121321
Another way is to click the button "Find more services online..." in the the Publish Service section of Lightroom, and to search for SmugMug in the Adobe Add-ons portal; you will find a link to the latest plugin: https://creative.adobe.com/addons/products/1755

  • How can I create a custom sized video in PP cs6?

How can I create a custom sized video in PP cs6? I have read references to the "desktop" setting but cannot find it. I am trying to find the right settings for a 1080 px x 486 px video (which I need to qualify for hi res on Vimeo).  I need to output a 450 x 1000 px video for
my website. Ideally, I'd like the sequence settings as well as the output settings. I am using still shots- no actual video.

What are the exact properties of the still images, particularly the pixel dimensions and pixel aspect ratio (PAR).* The letterboxing (black bars top & bottom) is most likely a result of a mismatch in these settings. If this is the case, then the easiest fix is to make sure not only the dimensions but the PAR match.
Say for instance your source images are 1000x1000 with a PAR of 1.0 (square pixels) and your sequence is set also set to 1000x1000 but with the PAR set to D1/DV NTSC (0.9091), the result would be letterboxing as seen here:
*if you're not sure about the PAR of your source images, right click on one of them in the Project panel and select Properties.

  • Aperture and iWeb

Here's a question about working with iweb and Aperture that I asked in the iweb group with no luck.
Here's the deal: iweb is not updating available Aperture photos. What is wanted, of course, is to work in both apps, and for newly added photos to Aperture to appear in iWeb soon after adding to Aperture. This doesn't happen.
I've tried deleting prefs and caches but so far no luck and while I think this is an iWeb problem, there's this: a search from iWeb to Aperture will bring up some relevant images, but not all images.
This leads me to wonder if it is an Aperture metadata issue and wondering if anyone has some insight.
    –ms

    Hi Ernie,
I've tried it both ways and the behavior is the same. I keep thinking that there would be some option-click or similar activity to make it update, but I am seeing now that it is more than updating. iWeb simply isn't seeing some of the Aperture records no matter when they were added to Aperture, and, as far as I can tell, at least for now, the issue is related to custom fields.
    Thanks for helping.
    Michael
