Aperture and disk space

My library is full. I tried moving it to an external drive but Aperture reimported the whole library. Now I have another several hundred images I'd like to work with but I do not want to (nor can I) import them info Aperture.
Can I store them on the external drive and work with them in Aperture so that I can manage smaller numbers of files at a time? Also, if I can do that then can I export the images in my library to an external drive and empty the library and start all over?
Thank you,
Lisa

Lisa-
Your hard drive is full, not your Library even though the result is the same. Hard drives start slowing at something like 50% full and can get very slow or even unstable above 85% full; a good rule of thumb is not to exceed 70% full. You are courting disaster with only 3 GB remaining. Those of us with laptops must either Reference Masters or use a large external Firewire 800 drive for the Library. Avoid USB for Mac hard drive connection.
I like OWC http://otherworldcomputing.com/ for drives, "Mercury to Go" if you need portable or RAID0 for a stationary location. And another external drive for backup.

  • How should i allocate the right RAM and disk space to windows through boot camp or parallels ?

i am trying to understand how you need to set things up when trying to run windows from a mac ( using bootcamp / parallels ). i want to understand the implications around RAM.
i have a mac with 1terra SSD and 16 GB of RAM, and if i want to install windows i need to partition and allocate memory and disk space for windows.
now i would be running on windows :
    cad 2015
    revit / rhino
photoshop and some other graphic softwares
    so my questions are:
how do i decide how much space should be allocated to windows and once i decide that, can i change it later ?
how do i decide what RAM should be allocated to windows. and can i also change that in the future ?
now lets say i allocated 8 GB of RAM for winddows using bootcamp, does that mean that every time i log into my mac through OS, it will only be using 8GB of the total RAM ?
here's my last question : i have my parallels software yet to be installed, just as the windows 8 software. now should i use bootcamp to install windows ? could i install windows using parallels ? if yes which is better to use ?

    1. Windows needs 60GB for good performance, add the needs of the apps you intend to use and I would say no less than 100GB. (it can be changed later but it is not an easy task unless you pay for Camp Tune)
    2. You do not allocate Ram to Windows in Boot Camp. Windows will use all of it (64bit Windows) or 4GB (32bit Windows)
    3. See 2
    4. Use Boot Camp, Parallels will not allow Windows to run at full speed.
    General Notes:
    1. Make a complete backup of your Mac before you start! (do not skip this)
    2. Read the Boot Camp directions, then read them again.

  • Aperture: "Insufficient Disk Space" alert with 370 GB Free

    Hello,
Since I use aperture on Mountain Lion, it's unpossible to import big folders anymore.
The folders named "2012" is on my network and has 7 400 files (560 GB). I import it with option "In Their Current Location", so, it's no copy nor move. After checking, computer says : Insufficient Disk Space. Need 100 GB more". But HD is 370 GB free and pictures aren't copied/moved to my HD !!!
With snow leopard, I don't have this prob, but Aperture update are no more available for SL.
I work on a IMac with 4GB RAM and HD 500 GB with a Mac Server of 15 TB.
    Any suggestion ?

Aperture 3.4.3 on Mountain Lion 10.8.2

    Ernie,
    1) Aperture library is on the internal HD with 370 GB Free. FS is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The linked picture stays on a Mac Network fileserver with afolder per year. I make test with folder 2011 and folder 2012
    2) With LR, I don't import library from aperture but I import picture from folder 2012. And it's fine. LR library stays on the same HD/same partition than Aperture one.
    3) If I remove big TIFF file (273 MB) from 2012, it's OK.
    4) If I try to import 100 big TIFF File it's NOK : "Insuffisant disk space..."
    5) If I try to import 10 big TIFF File it's OK to import but zoom 1:1 gives a little picture.

  • Deleted iTunes items do not appear in Trash and disk space is still in use

I upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard last week and have just hit a rather annoying problem.
I have my iTunes library on an external USB drive, which is running low on disk space, so I thought I'd delete some o the shows that I've already watched on iTunes.  So, I opened iTunes, slected each file in turn, hit the delete key and then the Move to Trash option.
The files disappeared from iTunes, but my Trash was still showing as empty and the disk space on the external drive was unchanged.  I deleted a file on my local disk in Finder and that immediately appeared in my Trash.  However, emptying the Trash did not then free up any disk space on the external drive.
In Terminal, if I run df -h it shows 931GB in use and 103MB remaining, but du -sh * shows only 923GB in use for the same disk.
Any thoughts on why this is happening and how to find then delete that 8GB discrepancy?

I am actually having the same problem as sheepworrier. I deleted 15 gb of itunes files and it didnt even appear in the trash. THe hard disk space did not increase accoording to disl utility and iStat pro, however, finder reflects this change in free hard drive space. Any other files I delete, and empty from the trash do not free up hard disk space as measured by disk utility and iStat pro. Does it have to do with the fact that I recently updgraded my hard drive? I'm running a clone made by Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Time machine files and disk space warning.

hello, i have ran into some unknown issues with my os x and even though there have been similar topics discussed i would like to address mine and i hoe someone can help me out.
    1. I am not sure if I accidentally turned on time machine or not , but at some point when i restarted a computer i noticed different folders and files that i have not created myself on my HD such as
    .com.apple.timemachine.supported
    .fseventsd
    .hotfiles.btree
    .Spotlight-V100
    .Trash
    .vol
    var
    etc
    tmp
I do not know if this folders are safe to delete, since i am not using time machine.
    2. Trying to download rather big file 34gb i received numerous warnings that my disk isfull, and it is not. i have 105GB used and 126GB free, also I am using 4gb RAM. so there should not be a problem. I saw a few topics regarding disk space warning, that were suggestinng that the user runs an application which shows where most of HD is used.
I cleaned a few stuff, but still, how can I prevent from this warning to appear.
    Thank you for any suggestions

  • Aperture: Insufficient disk space on importing photos

When importing photos to aperture, the error message persists: Insufficient Disk Space (in the Library) ..even though there is plenty of HD space (47.71 GB). Is there a way to allocate more APP memory to Aperture?

What is your Aperture version, Kendra?
Check the "Import Settings" in the Import panel.  How is the option set to store the imported files?
If this is set to "In their current location" or a disk with with not much disk space, change this.By default it should be set to "In the Aperture Library".

  • Question about IMovie and Disk Space

Does iMovie have a cache or somewhere that it keeps stray files? I've noticed that sometimes when I empty the trash, I don't get my disk space back. I'm not quite sure why. I also read somewhere on these boards that iDVD uses double the size of your project in order to burn your movie. Do you get that space back or is there something I need to clean off from that. I bought an 80G MacBook 2 weeks ago and it appears that even that isn't big enough for me - sheesh.
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   80G; 1.5M ram

    Hello Stazya,
you have encountered iMovies non-destructive editing feature. A clip is only eliminated completely from the trash when no part of it is in your timeline any longer.
Video editing requires a lot of disk space (approx. 13 GB for 1 hr of DV video), so you might want to look at an external hard drive with firewire connection for storage. The other thing is not to import hours of video at a time.
iDVD requires that you have at least 15 GB of free disk space in order to create your DVD (it needs the space for the growing Temp file). The best way to proceed is to create a disk image of your DVD instead of burning directly to disc. When the disk image has been created successfully, you can delete the iDVD project and thus regain disk space.
    hope this helps

  • Video cache directory and disk space

    Windows Vista 64bit
    Firefox v3.6.3
    Flash Player version: WIN 10,2,152,26
    Hello,
I have two HDDs, one smaller with the OS on it and one larger. The thing is that when I watch video in high quality in firefox the smaller disk can fill up pretty fast(I currently have 17gb free and that can go to 0 fairly quick, surprisingly) and it almost instantly goes back to 17gb space when I close firefox but not when I close a tab with video in it. I tried changing my firefox cache directory to my other drive(using browser.cache.disk.parent_directory in about:config) but that didnt change anything.
Now, since I believe flash to be the "culprit" I would like to know how I can go about changing the directory to which flash video is cached?
It does take up quite alot of disk space but I dont think that would be a problem if I could just redirect the caching to my other drive.
    Thank you

I have removed some things from my HDD and now have 16.96GB remaining.
I've restarted the upload and in the time that it's uploaded 35.6MB, my disk space has gone down to 16.91GB.
Also, I have activity monitor open and I can literally see the Free amount going down 0.01GB every 20 seconds and the Used going up 0.01GB every 20 seconds.

  • What happend windows server have cpu to 100% or use ram is 100% and disk space is zero

what happend with windows server without local resources,  what happend with the users conect to server: sqlserver, team foundation server, IIS, etc

I'd locate the disk space issue as first step. May be out of control log files for IIS or other application.

  • External drives and disk space for iPhoto, iTunes...

I'm ill and cannot spend much time sitting at a desk, so I have to a MacBook (aka, when real sick, I can work in a layZboy or in bed).
So now I have the 17" MBP with 500G, and should upgrade the GHz to 8 as soon as prices drop.
    Here WAS my plan:
I'd put my iPhoto library on an external hard drive (EHD), because I already have about 30.000 pictures, most in RAW format, and they take a LOT of space... (semi-pro photographer) Yup, you read right. iPhoto, not Aperture. Switched to Snow Leopard and my Aperture isn't up to date anymore, don't have the money for Aperture2 and realized I prefer how iPhoto works for organizing... Except there is no referencing... And I also want to finally have all my pics together. Pics I had put on DVDs, finally scan old pics... But I won't have enough space!
So I wanted to use an EHD to put my iPhoto library...
And of course, make a backup of that EHD with another one, which I wouldn't keep in the house, in case of a fire or theft.
But I realized I have a HUGE problem!
    My computer is a laptop!
I don't use it in one place alone!
So I can't realistically have an EHD plugged in all the time (especially since they need power!)
I have Airport. It's how I do my TimeMachine backups. Works well. Maybe a little slower, but I don't have any cables!
But would it be possible to use EHD and iPhoto the same way?
    I'm not so sure...
I will need to work off the EHD regularly... opening RAW pics, editing them in Photoshop...
Any ideas? Should I buy my EHD?
I don't want to change my computer again... and I can't, realistically.
Physically, I don't have a choice. It's a laptop or no computer work.
When I shopped it was the biggest drive possible in a laptop.
    Please help...

Your need for a portable computer forces you to make some compromises — no way around that.
Western Digital has announced the impending availability of a 1TB 2.5" notebook hard drive, and its 640GB and 750GB offerings are currently available:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136459
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136414
The 640GB drive is 9.5mm high and will fit into all MBPs. The 750GB drive is 12.5mm high and has been reported to fit into a Late '08 15" unibody MBP, despite not meeting the 9.5mm maximum height spec for that model. The much-anticipated 1TB drive, not available yet, is also expected to be 12.5mm high.
Any of these drives could be used externally if mounted in a suitable enclosure. Note that many enclosures for 2.5" drives will not accommodate a 12.5mm high drive; one must be careful to buy an enclosure that will. I would not under any circumstances buy a WD hard drive in a WD external enclosure. There have been more reports of trouble with WD prepackaged external drives in these forums than with all other external drive brands combined. WD's drives themselves are fine; WD's enclosures seem fraught with multiple problems. If you want to use one of these drives in an external enclosure, I recommend buying the drive and enclosure separately and putting them together yourself. I can highly recommend OWC's portable drive enclosures, but I don't know whether or not any of them will accommodate a 12.5mm drive. Call them and ask:
http://eshop.macsales.com (phone number is at top of web page)
3.5" desktop external drives are available in larger capacities at lower prices than notebook drives, but of course they're larger, heavier and less portable, always requiring an external AC power supply. If you need a capacity of more than 750GB right now, these are the only option available to you.

  • Aperture insufficient disk space arrgghhhh

I am running Aperture 3 . 4 .5. on O/S 10.8.5. I tried to install 300 Raw images to Aperture. I created a new libriary on a  new 3tb drive free.Aperture tells me I dont have space. I check my system drive and its down to 10gb free, so I clean things up and I now have 18gb free. Same messages comes up. Will clearing the plist file help. If you could help that would be great. My wife has cleared the house of any sharp objects and put me on "suicide watch" Cheers guys

    Hi Frank
I format them Extentend (journaled). I look at the import options on the interface, clicked "reset to defaults" and this cured my problem. Strange though. I was a moment away from using Lightroom. Anyhow we can put all the sharp objects back now. Thank you for your reply. You can have the points.

  • Time Machine and disk space

I have just created a Time Machine backup on a new 500GB external drive (Mac OS Extended format) attached to a new 2012 Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion 10.8 with a 750GB hard drive (single partition, Macintosh HD).
If I look at the Info of Macintosh HD drive it shows a total capacity 749.3GB of which 725GB is free. My basic grasp of math tells me therefore that approximately 25GB is being used.
So, I create my first Time Machine backup that takes about 20 minutes to complete and if I look at the folder with the name made from the date and time of the backup underneath Backups.backupdb\MyMac it shows a size of 18.5GB.
My first question is whether TM does some compression on the backups that would explain why only 18.5GB has been backed up rather than the 25GB that I was expecting?
    Secondly...
Over the next few hours three more backups are made so I currently have a total of 4 date/time folders and a Latest link under the Backups.backupdb\MyMac folder. These last three backups were completed in a matter of seconds as nothing has been added/changed on the disk.
If I check the info of each individual time/date folder they are each displaying around 18.5GB and if I check the info of the Backups.backupdb\MyMac folder it shows that 74GB (4 x 18.5GB) has been consumed on the disk .
However the Info of the Time Machine disk from the sidebar shows that only approximately 18.5GB has been used with about 471GB of the 500GB still available.
How come each of the four individual date/time folders are showing they each contain approximately 18.5GB whereas I believe only the first actually contain this amount of data? Are there links in the subsequent backups to the original that are then included in the stats?
Should I take the space consumed as shown by Finder with a pinch of salt or is there a way to get a more accurate idea of what is contained in each of the backup folders?
    Thanks

Thanks hpr3... The link http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html explained it very well...
Sorry for the repost in the Mountain Lion forum but I can't find a way to delete the posts.

Find out how to remove or leave offline for both Sophos, and Little Snitch.  You only need to examine for viruses when you get attachments from unknown sources, and need to check before you open them.  Little Snitch is only useful if you use any peer2peer software, which you should avoid anyway.

  • Download went fine but I get an error message about rights (even logged in as Administrator) and disk space (even though there's plenty) when I try to run the .exe and extract files.

IT help said the installer was corrupted. Back I go to see if I can download it again and get a clean version.

Banjo Seth if you are receiving messages that you have insufficient file permissions then please have your I.T. department attempt the install utilizing a local administrator account.

I recently had my computer serviced. I re-downloaded Thunderbird (getting a newer version), and retrieved my saved email. Now, Thunderbird keeps asking me to compact, but when I do, I get this error message:
The folder 'Inbox' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.
Obviously, since I'm getting mail all the time, I have write privileges, and disk space. The question is whether there's a setting I need to specify, or whether Thunderbird is writing to a special partition that may have gotten write-protected when my computer was in the hospital - or whether this is related to a known bug.
    All help appreciated.

The only know bug I can see is probably your anti virus is trying to scan the file when the new inbox is created leaving Thunderbird to think the file was not created.
As an experimental / diagnostic process. Restart the machine in safe mode with networking using Microsoft instructions for [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7] then try the compact. If it works I was most likely right. If it does not, another idea must surface.
