Aperture and Lion using ALL my ram

Using Aperture on a Macbook Pro (2008) Intel Duo Core machine.
Worked great with Snow Leaport, but now with Lion, eats ALL of my ram in minutes.
Forget about using any plugin's or external editors, but Aperture itself takes it all.
I have 4GB total in the machine.
If I upgrade the ram to 8gb, will that solve the problem, or does the ram just continue to be sucked
up by Aperture unil it's all gone no matter how much I have in there?
Thanks for any advice.

There is an entire thread on bugs in the Aperture/Lion combo here
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15996854#15996854
In a nutshell, Aperture is buggy under Lion. Net result is that it is not usable with 4 GB or less and maybe even 8 GB is not enough.

I am running Firefox 18.0.1 and the plugin-container is using all my ram, have tried altering dom.ipc.plugins to false but makes no difference. Any advice please

plugin-container.exe is used to run Flash and other plugins so if they crash they do not take down your main Firefox session. But... I don't think memory usage would be that different if you tricked Firefox into running Flash inside firefox.exe. (There was a thread with the trick, but I can't recall the details. It was not a regular Firefox setting.)

You may not expressly be using all the RAM in your machine but OS X will, whether you know it or not.
Each time you read a file from disk, whatever was read is cached by the system; when the file or program is no longer in use, the memory is marked free for the system to recover for other purposes but as long as it remains in memory the next time you need to access that disk information it's simply read from memory.
The more RAM, the more disk data is kept around and the faster your machine will operate until that memory needs to be recovered or you reboot (or otherwise flush the disk cache.)

  • HT3918 Does Snow Leopard use all the ram installed, I know that Leopard didn't.

Does Snow Leopard use all the ram installed, 10 gigs in my case. Leopard didn't.

You should be OK with that much, however, besides the basic needs of the OS, it will depend on how many and which applications are open and how memory intensive they are. Someone might easily get away with 4GB and someone else might have trouble with 16GB.

  • Export out of Motion uses all my Ram?

Why when I export out of Motion it uses all my Ram? Whether I have 6GB or 10GB of Ram it uses it all.
Then it starts all the page outs. Right now I am at 12GB of page outs.
From what I understood you should not have a lot of page outs thats why I purchased more Ram.

Well, as a bit rate, HDV has the same throughput as regular DV. The throughput for ProRes is higher so if you have a lot of multiclip angles, you'll need RAID speeds to run it.
However, HDV is a Long GOP format and as such is not really meant for editing, it's designed for file compression. Pro-Res is an intraframe codec. You can wiki the difference if you want to get into specifics, but the gist of it is that HDV requires a lot of processor power to uncompress the GOP structure, allow for editing and then rebuild the GOP structure on export. This is what makes HDV undesirable for editing. It also eats up a lot of what Motion uses to perform math for motion gfx.
If you're working with multiclips, and you have FCS 3, then you have access to the ProRes LT and Proxy codecs, both of which are high-quality/low bitrate codecs. I would convert the HDV to proxy or LT (whichever your system can handle), edit, and then batch re-digitize to the source tapes. However, I would want the high-rez source to be ProRes regular, not HDV.

My (early 2011) MacBook Pro has 4 gig of memory and is using all of it and running slow.  I am planning to double memory, but any ideas about why it's using all that memory?  (Yosemite 10.10.2).

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Need to Resume download to complete the ongoing Process.
Last Resort, put the iPhone in DFU mode (Google How to do that). Connect in iTunes. Follow on-screen prompts to Restore. All Data would be lost, if not backed up earlier.
To save the photographs you may have to use third party software. Google is your friend.

  • Anyway to fully use all the ram in bootcamp?

is there anyway to fully use all the ram in bootcamp? where now only up to 2.17 usable from my 4gb ram in macbook pro or this is normal?
    I'm using window 7 with 32bit.

Use the 64-bit Windows 7 to get the full amount of RAM.
It's a limitation of 32-bit Windows in conjunction with a limitation of Apples Boot Camp.

  • I lost all my pictures in Aperture and I used Time Machine to restore the lost pictures.

After losing all my pictures on Aperture and not being able to restore the the pictures using Time Machine as instructed by Apple Care.  I searched the web on how to restore the pictures using Time Machine and did not find a good solution.  So with trial and error this is the solution that worked and it is easy. Using Time Machine restore the entire Pictures directory. Then restore the Aperture in Application. Then go to the Pictures directory and click on the White Box label Aperture.  Do not open the Aperture Application it self Clicking on the White Box label Aperture will do the trick.  It worked for me and I hope it works for you.  Initially I lost 9500 pictures and I was sick till it was fixed.  Everything went back to exactly the way is was before, including thumnails.

Thanks for posting.  I have my library on an external drive and it spins processing before it crashes.  I have tried everything.  I think it believes some images are corrupted but who knows.
Do you keep your photos on your internal or external hard drive?  Did you just open aperture and choose new library or did you delete your old one?  I am not sure what to do, I have a big aperture library on a hard drive and time machine back up somewhere.  I have a mirrored hard drive so I may only have 2 copies of the same screwed up library, don't know if they back up on time machine also?
Time machine has always confused me to be honest and fortunately I have never had to use it.  So you can just replace your pictures?  I think I have a bunch of photos in iphoto library on my internal hard drive, I hope I don't end up with duplicates and triplicates.  Although I would settle for just about anything right now.  I have 15k pictures that I see briefly before it crashes.

  • How to configure LR2 to use all installed RAM?

Hoping to find some answers here about a problem I'm having with Lightroom 2.7. First let me give you some details about the computer I'm running LR on.
PowerMac G5 1.8Ghz single PowerPC CPU
    8 Gb RAM
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Lightroom 2.7
    Photoshop CS4
The OS acknowledges that there is 8 Gb of RAM installed, but in Photoshop, I am unable to assign any more than 3072Mb of RAM as that's all that's being seen by PS as "available". I can't find a configuration in LR to adjust how much RAM the software can be assigned.
I was looking around for a fix on this yesterday and saw a mentioning of running the software in 64-bit mode, but I am unable to find where that is enabled/disabled. Can anyone steer me in the direction I need to go or am I just S.O.L and bought a bunch of RAM I can't use in Photoshop and Lightroom like I bought it for?
    Thanks.

I expected this, actually. The version of OS X that ran on most G5s was not "64-bit clean."  Meaning, only some aspects of the system were 64-bit, but it was not complete from user app to kernel. So you don't get full advantage of 64-bit.
Lr can see 4Gb of address space and use that. It will request as much or as little of that as it requires. Since you have so much physical memory it can do this without causing the rest of the system to swap.

  • Trustedinstaller using all my RAM

I've had a laptop and a PC were I have done a reinstall from a recovery partition.
On both the system when I'm updating them the trustedInstaller.exe process has been using all of the RAM, and resulting in low memory errors.
If i install the updates bit by bit it isn't so bad. but is i install say 130 the ram hits max around the 100th update. on the laptop I've just done the process had 3,800,000KB committed ram and was only working 50,000KB, the computer only has 4GB in it
so it just maxed out and the updates would take 10x longer than they normally do.

  • Kernel for i686 which uses all 4GB RAM?

I've got i686 (x86) version of Arch installed. How can I make it use all my 4GB RAM? It just sees 3,3GB now. I know it's possible to use more than 4GB on 32-bit with some tweaks etc (I'm using 8GB on RHEL i386 servers at work), but how do I make it so in Arch?

    Swap: 4064404 8 4064396

True Ibertus but not apparent from the post.
An added observation is that the added PAE requires ram for addressing so the full 4GB is not accessible, about 3.5GB is useable.  Thusly, the added 1GB is actually only a half GB and requires the 64g highmem mod to the kernel..required for every new upgrade.

I suggest removing that antivirus and rebooting.

  • Aperture and Lion

I was looking to buy Aperture as part of a birthday gift for my wife, since she love pictures.  However, after reading about 10 reviews all have warned aginst this.  Have these kinks been worked out with regards to the software and the OS?
Looking for some honest feedback here...  I just purchased a new Mac book pro with 4gb and i7 proccessor and dont want this to chew up the performance on my machine.
Thanks in advance for any answers

I think you will find that anyone warning against Lion & Aperture did so based on less than 8 GB RAM or less than i7 cpu or on a marginal GPU or on an OS version before10.7.2 or on an Aperture version before 3.1.3 or some combination thereof. Upgrade to 8 GB RAM and your wife's MBP will fit none of those criteria.
    • Heavy images-handling applications tend to be hardware and RAM hogs, and Aperture is one of the worst in that regard. One should optimize hardware for performance at every possible opportunity for optimum Aperture performance. Upgrading to 8 GB RAM is cheap via third party (OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/ or Crucial) and easy to install. Just do it - if for no other reason than to know that if you have performance anomalies it will be unlikely to be RAM.
    • Most important is to back up originals before import into Aperture or any other images management app. Reading the "Aperture ate my images" threads here is very distressing to a photographer. It is not that Aperture routinely eats images (it does not) but it is a complex pro images application and users make mistakes setting up their workflows. One inexcusable mistake is failing to back up originals prior to working.
    • Install the Aperture Library on an internal drive and never let the drive get more than 70% full as a rough guideline. Even less full is better, because hard drives slow as they fill. As the Aperture Library size grows the workflow regarding drives will need to evolve; plan on discussing that here then (not now, because evolution in SSD and Thunderbolt choices suggest we will potentially have new scenarios/costs later this year).
