Aperture and Lion

I was looking to buy Aperture as part of a birthday gift for my wife, since she love pictures.  However, after reading about 10 reviews all have warned aginst this.  Have these kinks been worked out with regards to the software and the OS?
Looking for some honest feedback here...  I just purchased a new Mac book pro with 4gb and i7 proccessor and dont want this to chew up the performance on my machine.
Thanks in advance for any answers

I think you will find that anyone warning against Lion & Aperture did so based on less than 8 GB RAM or less than i7 cpu or on a marginal GPU or on an OS version before10.7.2 or on an Aperture version before 3.1.3 or some combination thereof. Upgrade to 8 GB RAM and your wife's MBP will fit none of those criteria.
• Heavy images-handling applications tend to be hardware and RAM hogs, and Aperture is one of the worst in that regard. One should optimize hardware for performance at every possible opportunity for optimum Aperture performance. Upgrading to 8 GB RAM is cheap via third party (OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/ or Crucial) and easy to install. Just do it - if for no other reason than to know that if you have performance anomalies it will be unlikely to be RAM.
• Most important is to back up originals before import into Aperture or any other images management app. Reading the "Aperture ate my images" threads here is very distressing to a photographer. It is not that Aperture routinely eats images (it does not) but it is a complex pro images application and users make mistakes setting up their workflows. One inexcusable mistake is failing to back up originals prior to working.
• Install the Aperture Library on an internal drive and never let the drive get more than 70% full as a rough guideline. Even less full is better, because hard drives slow as they fill. As the Aperture Library size grows the workflow regarding drives will need to evolve; plan on discussing that here then (not now, because evolution in SSD and Thunderbolt choices suggest we will potentially have new scenarios/costs later this year).

  • Aperture and Lion vault problem. Have Lion ruined my Vault?

    Hi!
I have my iMac since the release of mid-2010 models but it's my first post here.
I have installed Lion from a clean install of Snow Leopard and 10.6.8. I am restoring my programs, and I have a very big problem with Aperture.
I have restored my Vault and all my photos are show as "disconnected" because the volume "Mackintosh HD" is offline...
I can't understand this. I have use this Vault before without problems...
What can I do? Is my library ruined?

Figured it out. I started Aperture using CMD-OPT and repaired permissions. All the images came back. Not well thought out by Apple - Aperture was right where it always was, but after the upgrade, for some reason I no longer had permission to view my own images.

  • Aperture and Lion using ALL my ram

Using Aperture on a Macbook Pro (2008) Intel Duo Core machine.
Worked great with Snow Leaport, but now with Lion, eats ALL of my ram in minutes.
Forget about using any plugin's or external editors, but Aperture itself takes it all.
I have 4GB total in the machine.
If I upgrade the ram to 8gb, will that solve the problem, or does the ram just continue to be sucked
up by Aperture unil it's all gone no matter how much I have in there?
    Thanks for any advice.

There is an entire thread on bugs in the Aperture/Lion combo here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15996854#15996854
In a nutshell, Aperture is buggy under Lion. Net result is that it is not usable with 4 GB or less and maybe even 8 GB is not enough.

  • Prints too dark - Aperture and Lion (newest versions)

Hi - relatively new to Macs and Aperture (Windows/Lightroom user).
I have been trying to get decent (meaning not so dark) prints. I have calibrated the iMac 21.5" using a ColorMunki Display and print to an Epson Artison 835 using the Epson ICC profiles.
And no matter what I print from (Aperture, iPhoto and Photoshop Elements 10) all the prints are dark - like they are underexposed by 1-2 stops.
First I thought it was an Aperture problem but then saw almost the same results from the othe two programs.
I then did the monitor calibration using ColorMunki Display - and to be honest there was not a big difference in the brightness, a slight difference in the color cast.
But the prints are still coming out dark.
    Any suggestions please????
    Steve

This comes up frequently, regardless of equipment or software.  Since you have the same result outside of Aperture as inside Aperture, the problem is not being caused by Aperture.
There are many things to check for.  This post will give some ideas.  After confirming that all software (including drivers) is up-to-date, the first things I'd look at are your luminance setting for the calibration (I use 85, but this -- like almost everything -- dependent on your work environment), and the display preferences for your monitor.  See also this post.

  • Aperture 3..1.3 and Lion - progress, or lack of it.

Here's what I've found. Others may want to see if their experience is the same if not already tried.
I installed Lion and the new Aperture upgrade two days ago. Nothing has worked properly since.
Yesterday, I could not open the latest upgrade of Aperture at all on my iMac (8gb Ram installed). Like all other apps, it just hung, and Force Quit caused any other app on the machine to freeze up too.
Today, I booted the machine in Safe Mode. Takes about 5 mins (reminiscent of having a Microsoft machine), but Aperture then opened under this method. I can see all projects and albums in the Browser view. In Split View, the thumbnails appear at the foot of the screen as normal, but the viewing pane is blank. In Viewer mode, nothing shows at all.
All metadata is nevertheless visible in Inspector. In Split View, running the mouse over the blank viewing pane in crop or straighten mode affects the thumbnail in the normal way - it crops or straightens.
So, the problem is clearly that the  version from which I would normally edit is simply missing from actual view on screen. This suggests the error is partly in the Aperture upgrade, or at least in how it displays under Lion.
I have been through all three of the Library rebuild processes. Neither of these made any difference to the problem. I can view and manipulate separate versions of the same photos in iPhoto, but iPhoto will not read the Aperture library.
Booted in normal mode, Aperture still will not open at all. It says it is accessing the Library, but the Force Quit screen (even after leaving it for 30 minutes) says Aperture is "not responding".
Nothing on my iMac since installing Lion will give me access to any external USB drive or memory card.
Anyone any suggestions, or workarounds that might move this forward, please?
    Tom

    Hi Jan,
I spoke to soon, of course. When I closed the call with Apple, everything worked fine. I was unable to recreate any of the problems I had had with Aperture, Finder, or anything else. However, when I turned on my iMac next day, they were all back again, just as before.
I have made two more calls to Apple support since. I have been talked through so many minor system tweaks that I have lost count - removing files from this folder and that, changing settings etc.
Right now, I have just ended a call with a very knowledgeable and helful support agent, and I appear to have a fully working machine. I have been advised to test everything except Aperture very thoroughly, and if it all works, to try opening Aperture and see what happens. The Support team are going to call me again tomorrow, and if there are still issues, they will refer me to the support agents who specialise in Aperture.
Stay tuned. My conclusion is that at the very least, there must be dozens of issues with which Lion is incompatible, and that we users are, of course, doing Apple's product testing for them.

  • Using Aperture 3 and Lion I can no longer view .mov file

Using Aperture 3 and Lion I can no longer view .mov files from a Canon G11. I get a thumbnil which is a triangle with !. If I right click I can open it with Quick time. I cannot import any of the files into iMovie as it does not recognize them in Aperture or iPhoto.  From other dicussions I tried removing 3ivvxVideoCodec.componenet from Quiktime Library and retarted with no success, so iI restored the file.

    You are welcome;
there is another problem with videos, that might apply in your your case, when you reimport the videos, after you deinstalled the codec - the location you are importing from, and the permission settings, see this post:
Re: Aperture cannot read newly imported video since Lion upgrade.

  • Print quality with Aperture and Epson RX580

    Hi all,
I feel like I've tried everything, but I just can't get Aperture (the latest version with all the updates) to print from my MacBook Pro on my Epson photo printer the way I could from other photo software on my old PCs.  On my old PCs, when I would print a photo from Canon DPP or Capture One, or even the Windows photo management software, I get a rich menu of dialogue boxes for the Epson printer offering different qualities of prints, different papers to choose from, "photo enhancement," and lots of other options.  Prints came out sharp, colorful, and just great.
When I print from Aperture, I get none of these options (I get color management and resolution, and that's about it).
When I print from Aperture, I get vertical lines in the prints, visible dots, and pixellation.  So what I do is email the "exported" versions to my daughter's PC laptop and print from there -- and get good results.  Boy, that's a pain.
Surely Aperture can do better than this.  So what am I missing?  Any ideas for what I should be doing?
    Thank you.

Canon MP990 and Macbook pro (os X snow lep.. and Lion) - Lines in prints in Aperture.
While a bit vague I got there and found the distinction between the printer driver managing it and the printer managing the photo quality causing the issues.
I could only transfer the pic's to iphoto and print for ( admitedly about the same time of more than a year).
    The FIX
in the first window after selecting print scroll down to rendering and select printer managed.
Select all the other settings you need then select print on the right bottom of this window.
This next dialogue box at the bottom is a show details button then a new set of menus are present (initial is layout in a pull down menu)  select color matching then automatic ( you can change this but it worked so if it is not broken I'll play later ).
You should have clear prints with no lines...

  • HT1338 I'm running MacOS 10.7.5 with all updates and did an update last night for aperture and now aperture doesn't open.  What's Zup?

I'm running MacOS 10.7.5 with all updates and did an update last night for aperture and now aperture doesn't open.  What's Zup?  Help!

Also when I do the system update it's not giving me an update for the latest Snow Leopard. I never knew that was available until I started looking around this site and it seems that since I have the internal dual core I should be able to update to mountian lion...is this correct? Will someone please help me and walk me through this. I love my mac I want to have it running like it should be.

  • Aperture and File Vault

I am using Aperture and File Vault on the same Lion OS X system.  I cannot open Aperture and get an Aperture window and see if my precious and valuable photos did, actually, get captured by Aperture before I deleted the photos from my SD Card.
The spinning beach ball has run for days upon days.  I have restarted.  I have nothing else running in the background.  I just let Aperture run overnight.  I get the spinning beach ball forever.  I do not ever see the Aperture window or view the recently uploaded precious and valuable photos.
What can I do?  It will not be easy to withdraw File Vault because my hard drive is well-over half full.
I am re-rating this app as "hate it" on 3/12/2012.  A year earlier I had rated it "don't like it."  So, I have dropped the rating from two stars--seriously bad--to one star--cannot be worse.
I have encrypted the hard drive File Vault in system preferences.  Apparently, this creates an over-whelming problem with Aperture because File Vault must encrypt and unencrypt the Aperture library which is presumably huge.  The Aperture library is presumably well over 1 GB because the collection of all the photos and videos in your whole life add up.  Apple combines them all-together into one ginormous file.  In my case, the Aperture library is over 30 GB.
So, the problem is, at least, recently:  I took a lot of photos in a recent travel adventure.  I uploaded them to Aperture.  Then I deleted the photos off the SD card.  Now, Aperture will not load.  It's been several days of trying, and I still don't know if I have lost my precious photos of the adventure with my son.
    I am beyond angry.
I have stuck by Apple with Aperture since 1.1.  I didn't like 1.1.  I didn't like 2.0.  I have absolutely hated 3.0.  Even if you did come out with an amazing product, I would likely not purchase it again.  I am so thoroughly disappointed and now enraged.

Your anger is understandable (and not something anyone here can help you with).
Your problem seems much more likely to come from File Vault than from Aperture.  Lots of users use Aperture all the time (with large Libraries) with few problems (most of which are pretty easily resolved).  For File Vault problems, you might get a more useful response in the Lion forum.
Once you do get things resolved, I strongly suggest finding a program other than Aperture.  V. 1.1 came out in 2006.  Six years is a _long_ time to use software that you don't like.

If the Combo installer did not work (what is the exact error message?), try to download Lion again from the AppStore, or boot into the Lion Recovery Partition:
OS X: About OS X Recovery
You can also try, to restore the missing framework from your backup.
You need to restore this folder from the System Library:
         /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager

  • Should I Uninstall Aperture and iPhoto? warning-long and complicated!

Due to trying to combine 2 libraries from 2 different computers, and trying to relocate masters, I've created a bit of a cluster, shall we say. I first ended up with 7,000 images on my desktop that i didn't allow aperture to locate originals. of course i didn't realize this was happening until after the fact. then i couldn't empty my trash after putting a couple old backups in it. then my finder stopping responding and i couldn't empty the trash, couldn't remove any of the files from the desktop, and on and on. tried to get into the finder window/destop via the mail app-it was the only way the finder window would open and delete the files that way. no luck. finally just went to the genius bar, and they were kind enough to take a little extra time and hooked up to their network and deleted all the crap off the desktop.
The problem now, is that Aperture keeps crashing, and iPhoto keeps wanting to update thumbnails. Can't really move about or do anything in Aperture AT all now.
I have repaired permissions, repaired the library, and am now trying a rebuild. If this doesn't work, i think my only option is to start over. i do have a good backup of Aperture/iPhoto will all files intact on an EHD.
Phew....hope this makes sense, and looking for guidance if possible. If I do need to start over, would I just uninstall Aperture, and iPhoto, then re-download them, or just drag and drop the backup from the EHD and that will work?
thanks so much to any "helpers"!

    1macprincess! wrote:
thanks corky! since i'm such a novice, a little of that was over my head, but i love to learn new things!
Sorry if I gave too much detail. In a nutshell, the user library folder (which is hidden by default in Lion and Mountain Lion) simply holds settings for any given program including settings the user can change in the program. All of the files in that folder are recreated either automatically by the program when launched again, or by the user making setting changes in the program again. Leaving them in place for a re-install is fine as long as none are corrupted.
Well, i kinda jumped ahead, and hope i didn't make it worse. I already put the corrupt AP library in my trash and it's emptying right now. i didn't see the need to keep it, plus with as many files as it contained (over 300,000 as i said), I felt like i needed to get it off my hd. kind of like smelly old food! (bad analogy, i know!)
Not a problem since you have a known good backup library on the EHD.
So, that said, if i understand correctly, i will open Ap after, import a few images-from where? I won't have a library any more. Then if i works correctly, I would drag the good backup from my EHD, to the PIctures folder in the Finder window, and then import to Aperture from there? Just do "import", and then that's it, or is it more complicated than that?
Once you launch Aperture for the first time after re-install, import any pictures you have to test with. Take a couple pictures on your camera and then import those. Make sure you can import successfully and that you can add adjustments. Then export them to anywhere you want (Desktop, Pictures folder, or any other folder) to make sure the export function works correctly. If all is fine, quit Aperture and then delete that library (which should be quite small and quick to delete).
Connect the EHD and then drag your known good backup library to the Pictures folder and then double-click it to load it. You should then be back to square one before everything went sideways (assuming the backup is a managed library with the Master (Originals) in the library).
Note - if you were running a Referenced library (where the Masters (Originals) were located outside the library package in Finder folders) - then you will need to make sure the Masters (Originals) are located in their correct locations before launching the good library so the library will locate them automatically. I mention this because you said in your opening post that you were combining libraries and relocating Masters so I am not sure what type of library the known good backup library is.
FWIW, the default library type for Aperture is a Managed library where the imported images are stored inside the library package.

  • Does aperture and photoshop migrate?

When I migrate everything from my old 24" mac to my new 27" mac, will it migrate aperture and photoshop?

They should, but if the new Mac is running Lion, any PPC apps you may have running under Rosetta now will not work on Lion.
Check in System Profiler to see if you have any apps marked as PPC. There may be more than you realise.
    Edit:
And do be sure to use Setup Assistant on first boot - not Migration Assistant later as that's fraught with permissions problems.

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

  • New to Apple and Aperture-I am surprised at the lack of integration between Aperture and applications as iMovie.

Aperture slideshow is terrible in terms of entering any text on a photo.  It appears that you have to export the photos from Aperture to the desktop to import the photos to iMovie to be able to add quite good text to individual photos. While I am new to the Apple system (I am quite knowledgable in Windows), I am surprised that iMovie cannot import an Album or a Project from Aperture.  It does not appears possible to to copy and paste from Aperture to the project created in iMovie without exporting to the desktop.  This seems like a step backwards.
Since I come from Windows I will be importing most of my photos into Lightroom3 and doing  most of my work.  Yet, there are features in Aperture that I like and will probably use both for the time being.  I am using Aperture 3 and iLife11.  New Macbook Pro

I read the manuals and watched the tutorials on the Apple web site as well as F1 in Aperture and never saw a reference to using Windows menu to list photos in iMovie.  I check this and it does seem to work.  however, you must admit that the procedure for adding text on a photo is limited as compare to iMovie.  Maybe, it is because I want to add text to a photo for posting on Mobileme or other photo posting sites so friends can view the photos in a slideshow or one by one.
I assume that you can answer this question. Since I was exporting photos to the desktop so I could import them in iMovie, if I delete the folder on the desktop will they disappear form the project in iMovie?  Since I do not like a lot of folders on the desktop can I move them to the Pictures folder and not loose the project links in iMovie?
