Aperture and original iMac G5

I have an original iMac G5 (1.8GHz) from 2004. I just download the Aperture hardware test app from Apple and was really disappointed that it reported that I cannot use this application.
Apparently my graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements.
My iMac is not that old and I can run Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro and Final Cut Express quite happily. I imagine these applications would be faster on a Quad G5 but that is a compromise I am prepared to take.
I appreciate that this application is taking advantage of new hardware to maximise performance but I wish I could use Aperture. I guess that is $499 of lost revenue to Apple.
If anyone from Apple is reading this: please can you find a way for this application to run on my iMac G5 (even if it is a bit slower, or has a few less features) - e.g. Aperture Express.
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1GB RAM

I too was quite upset by the incompatibility of Aperture to my Dual G5 1.8 GHz -- I thought I had a machine that would last at least 4 years. Alas, I didn't give up too easily. I researched what would be an appropriate graphics card to install to get this program running properly and came up with the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. Cool. Uh... not cool - this card has two spiffy DVI connectoers that don't work with my 20" Apple Display Cinema.
Groan... here we go again.
But wait! there's another work around. Buy an adapter for over a hundred dollars that the ADC can inconveniently be converted to a DVI monitor. The adapter is large but works fine in my situation, it adds another 5' of cable to the already long ADC cable, but no huge complaints here because the thing actually works. No power button on the front of the monitor anymore, and it takes a USB connection away from me that I have to work around, but it works!!
Now I am enjoying learning all this new stuff on a program whose capabilities I have triplicated with Phase One's Capture One Pro, and Photoshop's CS2. I am trying to find the ultimate RAW processor and they all, so far, have their unique selling features and idiosyncratic characteristics. Lot's of work to do!

  • Microsoft Word and original iMac

hi. my microsoft word is not working anymore on my imac - the original iMac. I have gotten tips in the past on how to fix this but none of them work and I do not have the original CD anymore. i have os 9.2. I have files that I need to access on the imac. I have some knowledge but not a ton on what I need to do here. I would like to know which Microsoft Word program will work with Mac Os 9.2 and how I go about getting more RAM for the iMac.
Also, where do I purchase both? Thanks very much.

What version are you trying to run right now?
I have MS office 2001 and it works great. the previous version, I think it was version 5 worked fine too. I have no idea where you would buy either anymore to be honest. They are old programs at this point.
More ram is perhaps easier to deal with. ramseeker.com or crucial.com can point you to the correct ram.

  • Howto Install Aperture on original iMac G5 [unsupported]

I just spent the last couple of hours trying to get Aperture to run on an iMac G5 (Rev. A) with an unsupported NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200. I have it working, its not too difficult to do, so I hope folks who walked into this problem can at least get it working
Basically what you have to do is this:
    Step 1:
Create a disk image using disk utility of the install DVD.
    Step 2:
    Eject the DVD.
    Step 3:
Edit the Distribution.dist file (its in the Aperture.mpkg/) directory, use terminal (under utilities) and an editor such as nano. You want to modify the check code so that the NVidia GeForce 5200 is no longer matched, an easy way to do this is reverse the 5 and 2, so it reads 2500 instead of 5200.
    Step 4:
Run the installer as normal (should no longer complain about your video card)
    Step 5:
Running Aperture still produces an error. Couldn't find where Aperture was loading the comparison string, could be in the executable. Didn't want to hex edit that and cause instability. So needed to find another workaround, the answer.. Xcode 2.2. Download it from Apple's ADC site (just google for Xcode 2.2 and you'll get the link.
    Step 6:
After installing Xcode 2.2, there is now a Developer folder on the installation drive, click on it and then Graphics Utilities, you should see a program called OpenGL profiler.
    Step 7:
Load up OpenGL profiler, make sure trace and backtrace are UNSELECTED. Set under preferences the sampling / polling rate under seconds and mseconds to something fairly high. This will limit OpenGL profilers impact on performance.
    Step 8:
Select Aperture under Applications as the program to launch. The under launch options, you'll see the video driver option. This works as software driver, or on the iMac G5, the NVidia 6800 driver works as well.
    Conclusion:
Aperature appears to run smoothly on the iMac G5 20" with an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. Why Apple deliberately chose to single out this particular card, is beyond me.
Apple really needed more clearer specs information on their packaging. Most non-tech people are going to read iMac G5 1.8GHz and 1GB ram, go I have all of those and buy the software. Of course the license agreement on Apples site indicates if you open the box and have a printed license agreement inside, you cannot return the software. So you either buy a new system or are out the $499+tax for the software. In my opinion this kind of forced upgrading tactic won't win you over any customers. Especially if those customers purchased a $2000+ system from you last year

Strange. It really runs ok (speedwise)?
I have the Rev A iMac. I was so ready to plop down my $500 when I saw the demo. I was very dissapointed when I found my machine wasn't supported. I can't justify spending $2k on a new computer when this one runs everything else (including Photoshop) just fine.
If it does run well enough, I don't see why they would prevent me from giving them $500. I suppose they could give a disclaimer about speed and all...
Well, keep it up and post your progress. Maybe if there is enough demand, they'll lower the requirements for 1.1
    Thanks!

  • Aperture (and entire iMac) hangs brushing adjustments while zoomed in

This problem is almost 100% repeatable on my iMac running Aperture 3.0.3. I've been working on brushing in various details on a photo (mainly blurs, sharpening and some level adjustments) and in some cases I've need to zoom in tightly (200% or more) to get to the detail that I need to adjust. Almost every time I do this eventually the system hangs after trying to brush in the adjustments. It never seems to hang while brushing in adjustments while not zoomed in.
Not only does Aperture hang, but the entire computer hangs. I can't force quit Aperture or anything else. The Dock becomes unresponsive. I do not get the spinning beach ball. All I get is an active mouse cursor. Some background tasks continue to run, but display tasks seem to stop. I suspect that what's hanging here is the video display system, but I haven't seen anything in the Console to confirm that. The only way out is to power down the system and restart it.
Is anyone else seeing this? I don't know if this is related to OS X 10.6.4 or Aperture since this is the first time that I've been zooming in at this level for any adjustments.

Wow - interesting. I haven't seen all of the issues that some of the others in that thread have seen, but my issue is obviously related. It sounds like Apple may have installed a new video driver in the 10.6.4 upgrade which certainly could cause these kinds of issues. Let's hope they get them fixed!

  • Cinema VESA wall mount and original iMac G5?

This has probably been asked before, but does the Cinema VESA wall mount like this one:
    http://www.macconnection.com/ProductDetail?Sku=5202648
Work with the iMac G5 1.8 Ghz original model? Or is only the original wall mount that came out when that iMac came out able to work with it?

I was hoping to find something on this forum about locating the VESA adapter kit for the G5 iMac and your thread is all there is . Every on-line retailer that shows them in stock actually have none (I called 5 different ones...Why can't they update websites?!?!)
Did you have any luck finding one. I am moving into a smaller studio and I desperately need to mount my 17-inch iMac. I can't find anyone anywhere! I even called the Apple store number listed on the website and the guy on the phone acted like he had no clue how to even search to see if Apple had any and his response was, "AppleCare would probably be able to help you out more than I could.." Sure enough I got transfered to a dead-end and after 20 minutes I hung up the phone!
What happen to all of the VESA mounts they had. I swear like 3 months ago they were selling them in the on-line store! What does Apple do with all of them? Trash them?
Anyways, please let me know if you were successful. So far I am getting no where

There is no problem about using one ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match, and another for iCloud and its email and syncing facilities. This way you can all use the same iTunes account but have separate emails and calendars etc.

  • Transferring files from original imac AND external CD for old imac

I have an original iMac that has tons of files on it I would like to save.  I created a LOT of materials when I was teaching and they are all on the old iMac.  It also has two games I bought on floppy discs that I would really like to keep.  I tried to load files on a Passport, but the iMac won't recognize it.  I have two other old iMacs (not quite originals) as well, but they won't take the Passport either.  They will both take a flash drive.  I can take word processing files (I can't even remember the application at the moment) off the older one and convert them to Apple Works on the other one, then take the converted files to our iMac 9.1 and convert them to Pages.  Then I put them on the Passport.  It is a pain, but at least it works.  I can also save the documents as pdfs and put them directly on the newer iMac and copy and paste in a Pages document.
The original iMac does not lend itself to any of this.  What is the best way to transfer files?  It seems like a very long time ago I tried to connect it to my newer iMac with an Ethernet cable but it wouldn't accept the cable.  If I am remembering correctly I called Apple Support and they said it lacked something that would allow it to connect.  I do not remember if I have tried a flash drive on it or not.  I believe I did and it would not recognize it.
Also, does anyone know how I can manage to save a copy of the games?  Since I bought them on floppies I can't reinstall them if something happens, but I believe it is within the law to make a backup copy.  Someone please correct me if I am wrong.  I do have an external floppy reader for the original iMac, but it only works on user created floppies, not commercial ones.  If I can manage to hook up to a flash drive or another computer and I simply save the game application, will that be enough?  Or is it not possible to know until I try?  Will saving the application get all the necessary files?
My second question concerns the newer (but still really old) iMacs.  My daughter would love to play some of the games she used to play on them, but the CD drives do not work.  Does anyone know where I can get an external CD drive that we can attach to these old iMacs so she can enjoy her games?  The computers work fine; she just can't insert the CDs, because it's next to impossible to get them out again.
I believe on the "newer" two we are running OS 9, at least on one of them.  I do not recall the OS on the original, but it is whatever it came with.  OS 8, perhaps?  It has been probably half a year since we fired it up.
I appreciate any advice and help anyone can give me.  We really like these old iMacs, which is why we still have three of them.  If we can save the files off the original iMac, we would still keep it so we could play our two old games from time to time.  :-)  I would part with one of the other old iMacs, but I really need to get the files first, and since it won't take a Passport I'm wondering if I'm stuck putting files a few at a time on a flash drive.  Do you think it would take an ethernet cable?  It seems like I tried to connect to my newer iMac but I couldn't get the computers to recognize each other.  I followed all the steps for sharing, but I still couldn't get it to work.
    Thank you so much.

Have you formatted the Western Digital Passport drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume, or is it factory-formatted for PCs?  If the oldest iMac is only running OS 8, it can't recognize HFS+ volumes.  It was OS 8.1 that introduced that feature.  Additionally, the version of the USB support files (which is somewhat OS-dependent) on the iMacs hard drives affects what will or will not be recognized by those older computers.  With each successive release of the USB Adapter Support, the database of supported devices was broadened.  The easiest way to transfer the contents of the iMac's hard drive is to physically remove it from the computer and connect a USB-to-IDE adapter directly to it.  These adapters come with an external power supply to provide the 12 & 5 volts needed to power the drive.  The data connection block is designed to fit either a 3.5" hard drive or the smaller 2.5" laptop drive, as well as newer drives that connect via SATA.  It has an included USB cable that connects to a standard USB port, enabling direct reading/writing/file transfers from the hard drive to the computer to which it's connected.  These adapters are not Mac-specific in terms of design, so you can buy one at a PC store and use it.  For the purpose of identifying such an adapter, here's one that's often recommended in these Forums, carried by Other World Computing.  As I mentioned, this adapter is not platform-specific, so you can buy/use a less expensive one sold by PCs stores.  I bought one for $15 from Micro Center (PC store), and it has worked with Macs and PCs.  As for removing the hard drive from the old iMac - and I assume that it's one of the original models with a tray-loading optical drive (as opposed to the slightly newer ones that have a slot-loading optical drive), you can find directions for accomplishing that if you do a web search.  The link that I had for one site (that was good for years) is no longer valid.  The iMacs that have a problem ejecting disks are undoubtedly slot-loading models.  There are two wide rubber rollers inside those optical drives that grip the disk to pull it in or feed it out.  Over time, the rubber dries out, causing the rollers to lose their natural gripping capabilities.  If those iMacs have a FireWire port on the side, I'd suggest an external FireWire optical drive.  Today, the only type you'll find is a DVD±RW drive, which is more than you need for your intended purpose.  A basic CD-ROM drive isn't manufactured/sold anymore.  Other World Computing has a few FireWire optical drives, but their least expensive model sells for about $100.  Obviously, that costs more than the value of the entire iMac at this point, but the drive will also have USB connectivity as well.  You may find other uses for it with your other computers (Macs & PCs), especially if they don't have a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, or DVD±RW drive.  As for transferring a program itself, there could be other associated files.  You'd want to check the Extensions and Control Panels folders for any that are named to likely indicate being a part of the program's installed files.  The Preferences folder will probably have a file that has saved game settings, but a new one would be created when you run the program in another supported computer.  Depending on the age of the program - and you indicated that it was on floppy disks - its compatibility with newer, pre-OS X releases might be limited.  The external USB floppy drive that you use with the older iMac should read commercial floppy disks, but it will not recognize the older 800K (Double-Density) Mac-formatted floppy disks.  They're disks that typically format as 720K floppies in a PC, but the variable-speed FDD in older Power Macs was able to fit an extra 80K of data onto those disks.  A standard 720K "PC" floppy disk should be read by that drive, but it can't recognize an 800K "Mac" disk.  A 720K/800K Double-Density floppy disk only has the slide-lock hole at one corner, while a High-Density (1.44 MB) floppy disk has an additional hole at the opposite corner to differentiate it from the older type.

  • Exporting 7 min. video from Aperture and received error.  How can I get the original back?

I uploaded a video from my iphone 5 into Aperture and then I tried to export it to my desktop.  After I clicked on Export, it attempted to export for a while but then gave me an error message saying that 0 of 1 videos was exported and it couldn't export.  Now it shows the video in the album in Aperture, but it won't play and I can't do anything with it.  I have tried to recall the original but it says there is no original and it says there are no referenced files when I try to reference the files.  The clip also shows an arrow pointing to the right with a yellow triangle by it.  This is located in the bottom right of the image, right next to the video icon.  My concern is that I tried to export the original.  Any ideas on how I can fix this and get the video back?

The clip also shows an arrow pointing to the right with a yellow triangle by it.  This is located in the bottom right of the image, right next to the video icon.
Is that the badge you are seeing? Then Aperture has lost the connection to the original video file.
Now it shows the video in the album in Aperture, but it won't play and I can't do anything with it.  I have tried to recall the original but it says there is no original and it says there are no referenced files when I try to reference the files.
You tried to reconenct and locate the referenced file? Then you probably imported the video as "Managed" and then the commands for referenced files do not work.
Look directly into your Aperture library package, if the video is still there:
Select the Aperture Library in the Finder and ctrl-click(or right click) it.
Then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up.
In the Finder window that opens scroll down to the "Masters" folder and open its subfolder "2013" and then go to the month and day, when you imported your video. Do you see your video there, or any imports at all?
If you see the video in your library package, copy it to the Desktop, ad check, if you camn play it.
    What do you see?

  • What's the best way to share my Aperture and FCPX projects between an iMac and MacBook Pro?

    Greetings,
I own both an iMac and MacBook Pro and I'm interested in figuring out the best way to have access to my iTunes, Aperture and Final Cut Pro X files not only when I'm at home using the iMac, but when I'm out and about with the MBP.
I'm sure there are others among us who require a similar setup so I was hoping you guys could share with me how you solved this little problem, and also inform me of any potential negatives for your method so that I'm well prepared. Thanks.

Best is a subjective term, as it will ultimately come down to preference. The fastest however, would be to wait until they market has a few thunderbolt drives available for purchase...
But like the first poster stated, a firewire 800 drive, would be the more convenient choice for now. Or you could set the shared folder on your iMac to be avaible on your network and use it to allow your MBP to access it wirelessly.
Obviously whatever you change, just save it back to the same folder on the iMac. Keep in mind it will not be as fast as the first suggestion (unless it is a wired network), but may be usefull for smaller files.
However, you should have everthing backed up via an external drive, that is always useful...

  • Share aperture on my iMac and Mac Air

Can Aperture (and iPhoto, if possible) be used on my two computers?
I have all my photos on my iMac and have a Mac Air.
I would like to have them on both.
BTW, I will be buying a new iMac when they are available in a few weeks.
In case that is an issue in having an older model.
The current iMac is about 5 years old.

According to Aperture FAQ, you're fine as long as you don't use it on both your iMac and Macbook Pro at the same time, and if you are not a commercial enterprise or educational institution.

  • Original iMac crashes and doesn't start

I have the original iMac from like 4 years ago, I do not have the original software disc, I have newer mac's with the install disc, theses are intel, dueo disc.
I get the happy Mac chime when I start, I did run the original hardwear tester CD, everything is fine (it did take a long time on the memory test)
computer hardly ever starts when it does it crashes soon after. (dark grey dialogue box in center of screen)
Could this have anything to do with installing newer intel core dueo disc after completly erasing the original system softeware ?
Could it be that the memory has gone bad ? I've reset pram, switched and removed accessories, etc etc.

First, you should identify your iMac model more precisely. The "original" iMac had a translucent blue-green case with a CRT display inside, but it does not sound your model is THAT old, especially if it was new when you got it "4 years ago."
Here is a list of all the iMac models.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
If you can identify your iMac model precisely, or at least more closely, you will get more helpful responses. One key distinction is whether it has a PowerPC (such as "G5") processor, or an Intel processor. You are posting in the category for the iMac G5 (PowerPC not Intel).

  • Aperture and iMac

Has anyone run Aperture on a new intel imac with 2G ram. Wondering if the program runs adequately on this machine. I am looking at the 17" model. thanks

I have a pretty much stock iMac G5 iSight which has I believe a 600XT/128mb graphic card.
This was of course previously excluded by Apple from the minimum specifications of Aperture, but mysteriously with v1.1.2(?) the 600Pro & 600XT cards have appeared (as has PCI-Express for Final Cut Express HD; which is a different story with the same outcome).
However, whilst the Aperture (and FCE/HD) minisites show these extended specifications, the tech-spec pages at AppleStore do not reflect this, leaving me to worry.
Given that I have a chunk of RAM (and space for more) and given that there may be hacks to overcome the 600/PCI-Express bus issues in the short term would anyone like to comment on my likely experience with Aperture, before I start investing more time and effort on 'Lightroom (which I am beginning to like..;-))

Quickly, what I found is that only the ones I did actual adjustments on brought over two images.  Images that were simply rotated, had "quick fixes" or "Effects" did not bring in two images.  More importantly, among the ones with adjustments that did bring in two images, the ones with the keyword  "iPhoto Edited" appear to be nothing more than iPhoto's 6MB JPEG Previews.  The master was a 25MB RAW image.
I don't know why some users are experiencing doubles on everything, but I recommend caution in deciding which ones to remove or you may find yourself deleting masters and keeping previews.
