Aperture and the OpenRAW initiative...

Hi,
Do any of you know where Apple is in terms of supporting the thoughts and ideas of the openRAW community?
Personally I would like to have my images and the work I do on them to survive the life-span of Aperture.
Best regards,

It is my gut feeling this OpenRAW thing will lose steam over time, and here's why. The consortium is calling for an agreed upon standard file format for RAW--something which in theory may seem like a good idea, but who would....
- develop said format
- update said format with each new camera release
and the biggie...
- who would OWN the rights to the license for said format?
There is a lot on the line for whomever gets the nod (or fails to). Of the major manufacturers out there, Nikon is committed to their own proprietary NEF format, and have gone on record in the past as stating their stance on OpenRAW.
Companies like Canon, Hasselblad, and Phase One all have significant investments in R&D with regards to RAW formats, so I don't see any of them dropping their formats.
And the whole Adobe DNG initiative is a joke. C'mon, we already have to do one RAW conversion, why make photographers jump through yet another hoop to conform to a fledgling "open" standard which is tied too closely to a single corporation?

  • Aperture and the Retna Display

I have not been here for a while, so this has most likely already been discussed. If so, please disregard my post.
I was in an Apple store the other day and finally got a chance to look at the new  MacBook Pro Retna (MBPR).
So the MBPR has really high resolution. (total number of pixels) In the default (or recommended) display settings (System Preferences) the UI shows text in what I would call a large, sharp mode. It uses all the extra pixels to make the text sharper, not really small.  I assumed applications like Aperture would use all the pixels when it displayed photos. However, that didn't seem to be the case.
In Aperture, I double clicked a photo to view a single photo. I then clicked on the 100% icon. In this mode, I expect to see a one to one relationship between the pixels in the photo and the pixels in on the display. There should be no scaling.
I compared this (side by side) with another MBPR where the display settings were set to most pixels. (I forgot what it's actually called) In this mode, the text is much smaller. So you can see more of the UI. It's smaller and a little harder to see, but you can see more. I then took the same photo and clicked the 100% icon. This time, I got a different result.
I expected the 100% view to show the exact same way on both computers, regardless of the display settings in System Preferences. I expected those settings to affect the UI, not viewing photos at 100%.
In the default mode Aperture zoomed in more of the photo, so I saw less of it.
In the "more pixels" it was less zoomed in, so I saw more of the photo.
The default mode was not 100%, because given the size of the photo (around 3,000 pixels wide) it was too zoomed in. The "more pixels" mode seemed closer to 100%, but I don't think the math was working out right, since it seemed to show the full width of the photo and the MBPR is less than 3000 pixels wide.
No one at the Apple store could explain it to me.
Can someone with a MBPR explain it to me?

The link to the AnandTech site provided a good (the answer) explanation.
System Preferences in Default Mode: UI scales 4X and Aperture scales photos at 1X. So, in this mode when you click on the zoom viewer button, the image is scaled 1x, so it's a 1 for 1 pixel representation.
System Preferences in More Space Mode: Text is scaled at 2X (so your text and UI elements are smaller). However, Aperture no longer scales the image at 1X. It is scaling it down to fit.
This explanation seems to fit what I saw at the Apple store.
I would have thought that the System Preferences would only affect text and UI elements, not things like photos and videos, at least when viewed at 100% zoom.
I'm not sure I understand why Apple would change the 100% viewing of images/videos. I would think that should stay constant. Especally give the fact that the System Preferences settings no longer changes the displays resolution. Now it's changing the scaling factor, which I think should only affect text and UI.
But, that's just my opinion. Either way, Keith you have provided the answer to my question.

  • HT5132 Aperture and the end of MobileMe

    I have no MobileMe albums,
I switched to iCloud and still everytime time Aperture bothers me with "MobileMe has been discontinued" with a choice between "learn more" OR "ok".
    OK hangs Aperture.
Found the answer in the "Preferences", "Web"

You should have added the 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag to the MobileMe feed while you had the chance. As this is no longer possible, your only option is to email Support at podcasts 'at' apple.com and ask them to transfer iTunes' attentions to the new feed. Give them the iTunes Store URL, and the URLs of both feeds. I can't guarantee they will do this, but they have for others. Unfortunately your existing subscribers won't be notified of the change (as they would have silently been with the redirection tag) so for them it will just stop working.

  • Aperture and the new Mac Mini

I actually wonder if this new mac Mini could handle Aperture:
I currently have an iMac G5 2.1GHz and 128MB video card, with a firewire 400 external drive.
If I switch for the Mini with the 800 firewire connectivity and, say, the 256 MB shared graphics video , would I get an much better reactivity and speed ?

At the moment, the Aperture product page does not explicitly state that the software will run on the new mini with it's Nvidia integrated graphics system. It should, since while not highly recommended, it was capable of running on the Intel GMA950 of the prior model, but I think you'd need to check with the vendor (presumably Apple via phone or in-store) before purchase, just to be sure.
Assuming that it does run, you should find the system notably faster and more responsive than your current G5 iMac since the processor is a generation ahead in performance, and the system's bus speed etc are all faster. It would be wise to go for the highest RAM complement possible however, since that makes a considerable difference to operating speed as a whole.

  • Aperture and the ipad

I am new to ipad, but I imagine there must be something other than photoshop express to organize and manipulate photos. Do you have any suggesstions? I would love to use Aperture, or even iphoto!
    Thanks,
    BBT

This probably won't happen until the iPad gets ios 4, when the APIs open up. Until then the database isn't open to third parties for organization. Hopefully we'll have a way to import while shooting (maybe even tethered control) and be able to select, give ratings, crop and export. I'm not so concerned about editing raw on the iPad, and I doubt it can handle it. I just want to be albe to review with a client on a shoot and easily email or ftp jpeg versions after a shoot.
    Hope hope, fingers crossed.
Right now it's ok, just to be able to import and review after a shoot. But it just seems there are other possibilities that would just require proper access to the database.

  • Aperture and the new iPhoto 08 books???

It doesn't seem like you can order the new books introduced with iPhoto 08, that kinda su.ks! The 1.5.4 update does not add the new books which look way cool. This is really sad

Hu? I don't know what to say to that.
    = ]
It works! To answer your original question. under the file menu in the new iPhoto you can access your Aperture files! JOY just drag them into the book icon and it will import the photo and add it to your book project. It would be nice if it didn't take the extra step, but I have the feeling as I said in the above post that the new books not being in aperture is temporary.

  • Aperture and the MB

My installer is telling me that my MB (1g ram) doesn't meet the hardware specs needed. Whats the prob? Can I get it to run? Thanks J

Oh and for the record Apple *does not* support the use of Aperture on a Macbook so mac technicians will not likely help you. That doesn't mean people haven't installed it and gotten it to run.

  • Aperture and the orton effect

is the orton effect possible with aperture?
if so, how do you do it?
    thanks!

As the others have mentioned, that's a task that's much better suited to Photoshop which is designed to do that kind of thing. Aperture's job isn't to do that kind of work really, but it does form part of your digital workflow, in which you can import images, export them to a third party editor (photoshop) edit them there, and manage the edit within Aperture, along with the original source images.

  • Aperture and the media library

    Hi,
Since I've upgraded to Aperture 3.0, iTunes can no longer see my Aperture library. Is there something I should know or we are waiting for an iTunes update?
In Aperture I regenerated the previews for all the pictures, but no help there. I can see that in the media section of an open dialog, I can no longer see my Aperture pictures, just iPhoto library is there.

  • Re: Aperture and storing files on external

    Hi.
After reading this thread I guess I done something stupid...
I have a MBP mid 2009 with 500GB drive. I use Aperture for my photos but some time ago I run out of space on the internal disk. So after reading a bit about Aperture being capable to handle multiple library I marked a bunch of projects/events in Aperture library and exported as a new external library on an external disk. So far so god, I thought....
But now I'm getting close to running out of space again on the internal drive, so my plan was to mark more projects/events and export them in to the same external library that I created earlier, like fill it up a bit more to free more space on my MBP.
But, I haven't really found out how it can be done, or if it can be done. And now after reading this tread and the posts talking about +reference masters+ and not, I start wondering if I did something really stupid when I exported to a external drive as a new library.
How should I do now to get back on track, the right track again? So that I end up with my projects/events pictures on an external drive freeing space on my MBP and get everything right regardig the reference masters, so that I easily can manage my library in the future when it grow?
I'm not so experienced with Aperture so explain to me as for a three year old, as Tom Hanks said...

Well, now I have fiddle around a bit with all the explanations and recommendations I've got from you guys, and so far so good I guess.
I started with opening Aperture and the external library and Photos and selected them all , then used Relocate Masters to a newly created folder named Aperture Masters.
Then when it was completed I have to switch to the internal library and again used Relocate Masters, after selected all those photos to the same folder as the last one.
Now I had enough space on my internal disk to bring the external library with pointers (as some one called them) back in to my internal disk. But when I tried to Merge the to "pointer libraries" together something went wrong, because Aperture freezed halfway through the progress and I had to force it to close after some hours waiting without any sign of life from Aperture. I tried it again but the same result, it frooze. So I had to try with Add Library instead, and that worked. But suddenly many of the project was doublettes. But after checking them it was clear that of to of the same project folders, just one was a complete and correct one. The other one lacked some of the EXIF-info and some of the photos. And when I checked it up in the folder Aperture Masters there was not two copies of those folders. So I'll guess that fenomena was caused of Aperture freezing during my tries to merge the to libraries toghether.
Now I have some therapy work with going through all the projects to find those which there are to of the same, and then check which one of them to delete, then I'll have everything sorted out I'll guess. And finally end up with all the masters on my external disk and still one complete "pointer library" on my internal disk, and plenty of free space on my internal disk again.
    Thank's for the help guys

  • Aperture and other Pro Applications ( Final Cut, Motion, DVD Studio Pro )

    Hi folks,
I have bought Final Cut Studio a while back, and have been working with all the tools for a while now ( FCP, Motion and DVD Studio Pro ). Recently I also switched to Aperture to manage / capture / organise my digital photographs ( previously I used iPhoto ).
Now I was wondering how I could use the pictures from my Aperture library in Motion or DVD Studio Pro. When I look at the file Browser, I can easily use some iPhoto pictures, but apparently I can't seem to find anything for Aperture.
What I would like to do is use some pictures from Aperture in a Motion project and also include an Aperture album in DVD Studio as a SlideShow.
What would be the best way to do this ? Do I have to export the pictures I want to use ? Or am I missing something ?
    Regards,
    Stefaan

    Stefaan,
Unfortunately, that type of integration between the Pro Apps is not there (yet). It would definitely be a nice feature to have. We should all send feedback to Apple asking for this feature. For now, you will need to export photos for use in these other apps.
Along the same lines, I would also like to see integration with Aperture and the "iLife" programs. Since Aperture will likely replace iPhoto for at least some of us, it would be nice to be able to use Aperture photos in these apps as well.

  • Users of iPhone photo sync, Aperture, and stacks

For those who use Aperture and the stack feature, do you have the same problem as me when syncing to your iPhone?
    Here is the thing:
Stacks in Aperture are used to group related pictures (usually variants of the same picture). In a stack, you then choose the best picture of the stack and identify it as such. This picture is then the only one that is shown in an album once the stack is closed.
Now if you sync such an album, containing stacks, to your iPhone, the problem is that all pictures in the stack, and not only the best one, is displayed in your iPhone album.
(Note that I also posted this under the category "iPhone" in this forum.)

    More info:
This problem exist not with sync of albums on iPhone/iPad, but when syncing SMART ALBUMS.
If you sync a smart album that contains a stack of pictures, all pictures are put on the iPhone (not only the best picture of the stack as it should).
Please let me know if you have this problem (or not...)

  • Photoshop cs4 makes huge files - but with Aperture Whats the biggest file ?

When editing w/Photoshop cs4 by adding layers and masks etc, This makes HUGE files - but with using Aperture alone, what's the biggest file size when editing a RAW file?? (??? _Kb ??? __ mgB ????)
I think I heard -12kb. True ?_________ From what little I understand. Aperture changes the pixels once you have finished the editing. Or to put it another away, Aperture replaces the old or original pixels with the edited final pixels you prefer. IE -lighter darker. and with that said. is this still a RAW IMAGE?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
It would seem that none of what you report hearing is accurate. A RAW file downloaded into Aperture, remains as the Master for this image, and is never changed -- that is why Aperture is said to utilize non-destructive editing. When editing in Aperture, only a small file of edit detail is saved, and no actual new version needs to be created until you Export for some purpose.
When you send an image file from Aperture to Photoshop to be edited, it typically will be a version created as a TIFF file, although there are 4 choices in the Preferences -- TIFF, TIFF 16-bit, PSD, and PSD 16-bit. When finished editing, the image is Saved in PS, that file is available to Aperture, and the version created for sending to PS will change to reflect those changes made in PS.
Aperture cannot send an edited RAW file to PS in this fashion, but you can Export the RAW Master, to later be opened in Photoshop.
You should watch all the available online tutorials about Aperture, and possibly buy a book as well.
Aperture may have trouble with super-sized images, but I have not had trouble with those in the range of 100 MB or less. Larger ones than that would likely be from scans and not from editing an image shot with your camera in Photoshop.
