Aperture.app file size

How large is your Aperture.app file? (Click the app and get info). Mine is 711MB. Seems VERY high. Inspecting the "show package contents" reveals a 191.7MB "PointOfInterest.db" file. Is this all normal?

Note in Mac OS X the "application" is the binary plus a bunch of resources. Aperture has TONS of fancy templates for books, web, etc. and all are in the app itself. So standard size for the Aperture application is > 600 MB.
Your PointOfInterest.db likely has something do with Places. That doesn't seem shockingly large to me, really.
My Aperture file is just north of 800 MB FWIW.

  • How do I find out app file size

I only have 1.7gb left on my 8gb phone and notice that an app I am considering is 1.3 gb. How do I find the file size of apps before I buy them so I don't pay for something and then find out that I don't have enough space?
    Thanks!

I mean if I download this file and am left with only 0.4gb and want to download more apps in the future. Or if I HAD only 0.4gb left and needed to remove apps to make room, how do I know how large the are?
    Thanks!

  • Aperture library file size ?

    Hello,
I have all my pictures on a specific drive. I don't want aperture to import the files into this aperture library, i only want the files to be referenced. So when i import the pictures from the drive, i select "Store in Current Location". And it seems to be ok (meaning when i click on a file and say show in finder, it shows the drive in question), only my aperture library (even when i import files as referenced) ... increases it's size drastically, no matter whether the files are stored in the library itself or if they are only referenced ... how come? I want to avoid a 100GB aperture library file!!
Can someone explain to me how this works?
    regards,

    K,
Aperture stores many little JPG files for every photo that is in your library (whether referenced or managed). There are thumbnails and previews for every photo unless you run out of space or turn off previews.
Your library should not increase by the *same size* if you store a photo *by reference* as if you store managed. For a managed photo, Aperture will have your original (master) plus the thumbnails and previews. The referenced will have only thumbnails and previews. You can browse your Aperture library by right-clicking and viewing the package contents. You can then look (*but don't ever touch!!!*) at what exactly Aperture is managing. You will see pictures with the same and/or similar names are your original, but you will see they are different sizes. If you see your original, then something is out of whack.
I hope your "100GB" library was just an example. If you store by reference, you would need a LOT of photos to make the thumbnails and previews take 100 GB.

  • Aperture photo file size

I'm working on some scanned images I imported into Aperture some time ago.  I have two instances of the exact same image - the pixel dimensions are identical (4960 x 3596  17.3MP).  But one has a File Size = 16MB and the other has a File Size = 99MB. The only difference I can see is that the 16MB file carries a file type suffix of .TIF and  the 99MB file has a suffix of .tiff.
Any ideas about what is going on here?

In my experience, the Tiff that Aperture will create to send to the external editor -- in my case Photoshop CS5 -- has the .tiff extension.  Do you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements?  If you do, and the edited file were returned with layes, it would not be unusual at all to see this size.  With the image with large file, do an Export Master to the desktop, and with PS, or other editor, check to see if it has layers.
Btw, the ones I scan with my Epson 4870 have only a .tif extension.

  • App to show app file sizes in flash memory?

Is there an app in the store that shows the file sizes of all apps I've downloaded? I can't find one, but I'm often blind. As I run out of space, I'd like to delete big apps that I don't care much about any more, but I don't know which are big. Thanks!

You don't need an app to do this. With your ipod connected in iTunes, the app pane will also show the size of the app right next to the name.

  • Do apps' file sizes increase every time you install, delete then reinstall, etc.?

Does an app's file size get bigger slightly every time you reinstall it?

Either from computer or from the App Store on your phone.  To reinstall the app, you need to delete the one on your phone first.  Of course, if the app has a newer version, the new version could be larger (or smaller) but when reinstalling the same version, the app is the same size.
    Why are you asking this?

  • Aperture  migration file size limit?

I have been able to load a library of 19gb into Lightroom. However I have several libraries of over 100gb and I can't load them. After Lightroom analyzes the film to be imported it doesn't come up with the photo count. Without the count it gives an error when trying to import. Is there a maximum file size that can be successfully migrated?

Talking about "library" size, or the total size of your library and images?  Several users have libraries (including images)around 1TB and seem to do fine, in many cases.  I'd guess the number of images would be the first problem, not total library/image size.
Make a backup of your library, then run a permissions and library repair.  Make sure permissions are set correctly on you library.  If you're unsure about how to do this, put your library on an external volume, "get info", and "ignore ownership on this volume".  This was the cause of failure for two other forum users.

  • IPhone Packager File Size

I just experimented with the new cs5 iPhone packager and noticed that although my little test app just had some movable text the app file size was already 5mb.  Can any explain this to me?  Am I missing out on some way to reduce the file size.  I am just wondering what will happen if I have actual app assets in there as well.

using class files won't decrease file size substantially.
i've published about 20 ipad apps and the ipa file size is pretty close to the sum of the swf + loaded assets size IF you're loading significant assets.  otherwise, an ipa file with almost no assets will be about 3.5mb.
that said, why do you care how large the ipa file is (as long as it installs)?

  • Expanding files sizes

Hi everyone. I'm fairly new to Aperture. I notice that when i export files they seem to grow in size. In teh inspector in Aperture, the file size says 8.7mb. when i export it as a .tiff it come out as 31mb.
Excuse my ignorance but why is this happening?

Hi and thanx for your help.
I need to do two things with the images:
    1) produce slideshows of the various albums onto a dvd
    2) produce a DVD of full res images that people can take to their local lab and get printed.
I'm guessing that a high res jpeg will be ok for (2). I was then going to import them into iPhoto to save as a slideshow with image numbers then to iDVD.
I'm just confused about why the image after Aperture is over 3 times the size? Sure some space for layers etc i understand but does it really add over 300% to the file size?
As for the original camera, it was actually an EOS1Ds, 11Megapixels apparently! i think i left out the 's' before.
I believe that they were taken into Photoshop, saved as 8 Bit tiff's then given to me on the dvd. Most of the images are around 8Mb when seen in Aperture or anywhere else but still when exported they balloon to over 30Mb.

  • File size in Aperture

I am a new Aperture user.  When I try to attach photos from Aperture to an email, the file size is significantly decreased (5.4 MB down to 617 KB).  This does not happen in iPhoto.  I tried "exporting" to the desktop in original size and then attaching but it still decreases file size (5.4 MB down to 1.6 MB). Anyone shed come light?  Thanks in advance.

There is an Aperture forum but
When I try to attach photos from Aperture to an email, the file size is significantly decreased (5.4 MB down to 617 KB).
This is because you're attaching an Aperture Preview to the email. You can increase the quality of the Previews in the Aperture preferences.
I tried "exporting" to the desktop in original size and then attaching but it still decreases file size (5.4 MB down to 1.6 MB).
Don't mean to be rude, but Aperture is a very powerful and quite a complex app and really you do need to RTFM sometimes.
Original Size refers to the dimensions (length by breadth) not the File Size. The File size is determined by the Export Preset you use, and whether or not you're exporting Masters or Versions.

  • Aperture Exporting JPEG's from RAW: file size and quality questions?

    Hey Everyone,
So, I'm using Aperture 2 and I've got some questions about exporting from RAW to JPEG. I shoot with a Nikon D70 so original RAW files are 5-6mb in size. After doing some basic post processing when I export the pics at "full size" with picture quality of 11 out of 12 then the resulting JPEG is about half the file size of the original RAW file. For example a 5.6mb RAW becomes a 2.6mb JPEG. The resolution in pixels per inch and and the overall image size remain unchanged. Have I lost picture quality due to the exporting JPEG being smaller in file size?
My friend who works with me prefers to edit in Photoshop and when he follows the same workflow his saved JPEG from the identical RAW file in Photoshop is minimally smaller in file size, say 5.6mb to 5.3mb. He's telling me that my Aperture edited photos are losing quality and resolution.
Is he right, are my pics of lesser quality due to being a smaller file size? I've always been told that the quality of a picture is not in the mbs, but the pixel density.
I've bee told that Aperture has a better compression engine and that the resulting files are of the exact same quality because the PPI and image size are the same. Is that what explains the much smaller file sizes in Aperture?
I tried changing the picture quality in the export menu to 12 out of 12, but the resulting JPEG then becomes larger than the original RAW at over 7mbs.
Can someone please help me understand this better? I don't want to lose picture quality if that is indeed what is happening.
Thanks in advance for your help.

JPEG is a "lossy" file compression algorithm. Whether Aperture or PS, *every time a JPEG is saved some loss occurs*, albeit minimal at the 11 or 12 level of save, huge losses at low save levels. Some images (sky, straight diagonal lines, etc.) are more vulnerable to showing visible jpeg artifacts.
*Both of you are losing image data when you save to jpeg.* IMO the differences between the apps is probably just how the apps work rather than actually losing significantly more data. The real image data loss is in using JPEG at all!
Is he right, are my pics of lesser quality due to being a smaller file size?
    I doubt it.
I've always been told that the quality of a picture is not in the mbs, but the pixel density.
The issue here is not how many pixels (because you are not varying that) but how much data each pixel contains. In this case once you avoid lossy JPEG the quality mostly has to do with different RAW conversion algorithms. Apple and Adobe both guess what Nikon is up to with the proprietary RAW NEF files and the results are different from ACR to Apple to Nikon. For my D2x pix I like Nikon's conversions the best (but Nikon software is hard to use), Aperture second and Adobe ACR (what Photoshop/Bridge uses) third. I 98% use Aperture.
I tried changing the picture quality in the export menu to 12 out of 12, but the resulting JPEG then becomes larger than the original RAW at over 7mbs. Can someone please help me understand this better? I don't want to lose picture quality if that is indeed what is happening.
JPEG is a useful format but lossy. Only use it as a _last step_ when you must save files size for some reason and are willing to accept the by-definition loss of image data to obtain smaller files (such as for web work or other on-screen viewing). Otherwise (especially for printing) save as TIFF or PSD which are non-lossy file types, but larger.
As to the Aperture vs. ACR argument, RAW-convert the same original both ways, save as TIFF and see if your eyes/brain significantly prefer one over the other. Nikon, Canon etc. keep proprietary original image capture data algorithms secret and each individual camera's RAW conversion is different.

  • Preview.app increases PDF file size.

When making changes to a PDF (in my case, creating annotations), Preview.app will increase the file size of a PDF if that PDF was run through Acrobat Pro's "Reduce File Size" process. For example, I have a PDF that I created using a Book2Net book scanner. I then used Acrobat Pro 10 to OCR the file, then ran Reduce File size which shrank the file size from almost 1.6gb down to about 62mb. If I use Preview.app to make an annotation and then save the file, Preview.app will inflate the file back up to 1.6gb.
An earlier thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1478588?start=0&tstart=0) also discusses a similar issue. I'm not sure if those folks were also working with PDFs that were reduced in size by Acrobat Pro or not.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro.

That is not normal. same action with acrobat and skim do not do this. Changing file size from 170mb to 780mb (my case) should not be expected.
Preview re-formats the file (which takes a while the first "save"). It may even make scrolling and searching for text faster, but is not desirable all the time.
There is NO explanation from Apple in help or online. Keeping things simple is one thing, having unexpected and unexplained behavior is another.
Last preview update made it pretty much useless for annotations anyways.
Choosing "text" annotation used to allow for clicking anywhere on the pdf and start typing. Now, it automatically creates a text box at the center of page that has to be the dragged (and make sure not dragging other annotations with it). click T multiple times, multiple text boxes on top of each other.
I never thought I would look at Windows users with jealousy. What a bad job they are doing.

  • Time Machine file size vs actual file size of Aperture library

My Aperture database is 74.5GB.   I have a referenced library.   My photos are backup up on their own using Time Machine.   I also use Time Machine to backup my Aperture database.   However, I noticed yesterday that the Aperture filesize on my time machine backup is only 28.3GB.   I need to upgrade my hard drive and had planned to just restore form time machine backup, but I am worried about losing Aperture data.   Does anyone know why there is a discrepency?

It's probably not a very fast drive in the first place...
I know that 5MB isn't very big, but for some reason it takes a lot longer to open these scanned files in photoshop (from aperture) than the 5MB files from my camera. Any idea why this is?
Have a look at the file size of one of those externally edited files for a clue - it won't be 5MB. When Aperture sends a file out for editing, it creates either a PSD or an uncompressed TIFF after applying any image adjustments that you've applied in Aperture, and sends that out. Depending on the settings in Aperture's preferences this will be in either 8-bit or 16-bit.
As a 16-bit uncompressed TIFF, a 44 megapixel image weighs in at a touch over 150MB...

  • Can't download large file-size Apps

I have about 700MB free on my iPad. I have been trying to download a 270MB app since last night. I am using a Wifi connection. Everytime I attempt the download it gets about %70 through and then fails, either removing the app completely from the device or just starting over from the beginning again.
Is there a limit to file sizes that can be downloaded directly onto the iPad?
I can't use iTunes to sync the iPad at this time and it will be several days before I am able to do that.
Am I out of luck here? Or is there a way to convince my iPad to play nice?

Even though you have 700 mb free, that may not be enough.  You typically need 3 or more times the app's size during installation.  If you really need this app before you can use your computer, you can delete videos to make room.  Just tap and hold on the video's thumbnail until a circled white X appears.  Tap the X to delete the video.  You can put it back when you can access your computer.

  • Maximum file size for Adobe air for Androind and iOS compiled apps

    Hi All
I am working on a project which has a few videos which I need to bundle into my mobile app for an Ipad app I am creating using Adobe Air for iOS. My question is simple is there a maximum file size limit on apps compiled using Adobe air for iOS? And if so what is it? Any help would be great.

Hi.  Im not a 100% sure this is correct.  I am able to make a large .IPA file (200+Mb) and it will go onto my iPad 1, but it does not work - Just quicts after a few secs.  If I run the same IPA on my iPad 2 it works.
When I take out some of the assets so its a smalelr size then it does run on the iPad.
