Aperture can't read Sony a7 II raw files

I just got a new Sony a7 II and was shocked to see that Aperture cannot read a raw file from this camera.  Does anyone know of a work-around?

See this footnote to  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
Aperture works with most DNG files generated from cameras that support this format and with DNG files generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.
Try the different settings, to find an uncompressed setting.

  • Aperture 3 problem with Sony NEX-5n raw files

    Hi all,
I have a Sony Alpha NEX-5n camera and my brother advised to take the pictures in raw format in order to keep all the information the sensors gathered when making the picture. The problem I have is that the software Sony provides with the camera does not allow me to convert the raw files into other formats. I downloaded Aperture trial because my camera was listed in Apple webpage as one of the models that can use raw files with Aperture. My problem is that every time I try to import the raw files, Aperture tell me that it doesn't support the format, and I cannot open the photos in raw and therefore I cannot work with them. I can work with the JPEG, but that is not what I want.
I wanted to buy Aperture, but there is no point for me to do that if I cannot work with the raw files. Maybe it is the trial version, but then Apple would be posting the wrong information in the webpage and therefore should remove my camera from the list (it doesn't say anything about apgrades or updates).
Does anyone else have the same problem? Can anyone confirm that once I buy it, Aperture works with the raw files even if I have to update it?
Thank you very much. I am a Apple fan, but if it doesn't work, I will buy Lightroom or Corel even if they are more expensive.

    Hello Savarena,
Try to install the RAW compatibility update: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.9
    - if is possible to do that with the Trial Version. This update supports your camera.

  • Iphoto 11 can't read my nikon D7000 raw files, why?

I bought the latest Macbook air 13 inches and the Nikon D7000.
I tried to import the raw files (NEF) from the Nikon d7000, but it show can't read the files type, or
unsupported image file. It works fine with my nikon D5000, why?
    anyone can help?

Okay, I too purchased D7000 and A3 is not supporting "this new" RAW format (A3 did support my D80).
This is the question: Apple knows very well that camera manufacturers do "upgrade" their format - the same as Apple "updates" their format. This is not new, it's called "continual improvement", isn't it? I am sure that Apple has a "current process" to update A3 to handle format improvements from camera manufacturers. That said, I believe that Apple does have an "expected" date for this update. If they don't, then their business process is lacking and would not be competitive . I don't believe that - I am sure they have a good ol' gnatt chart.
It would be great for Apple, if they would give us an "expected date" for this A3 update. When they don't speak to us, we all wonder if they are listening to their paying customers.

  • I can't open Sony NEX-5 raw files with PS-CS6 and latest raw converter plug-in 7.1.

When I try to open raw files from Sony NEX-5 instead of going to PhotoShop like all my NEF files, they go to another software suite that I have (On-One).  I am running MAC OS 10.7.5 with latest PS-CS6 and latest raw converter plug-in 7.1.  On-One seems to hi-jack these Sony raw files and won't give me the opportunity for the adjustments that I get with the Adobe Raw File converter.  Any help??

    Great news!

I found an Adobe web site note that raw plug-in version 8.7 will support Canon 7D mark 2, but is not included in Elements version 11.

  • Aperture 3.1 can't find/see my Canon RAW files when importing

Aperture 3.1 cannot see my CANON RAW files when doing import!!!
Do I really have to re-reference each image in the library if I have moved the library to a different volume? Images are not moved to the library, only referenced.

You don't want to re-import files if you move the library. You just need to reconnect the masters.
If you moved the whole thing over at once it should be easy; if you monkeyed with the folder names you could have a lot of work on your hands.

  • LR 4.2RC and ACR 7.2 RC won't read SONY RX 100 ARW files

I was at a wedding yesterday and had two cameras with me - a Nikon D800 and my little SONY RX 100.  I was using an Eye-Fi Pro card for the Sony.  I'm uninterested in the Wi-Fi capabilities when I'm away from home, but like the camera to upload pictures when I'm close to my big processing machine.  Long story short.  This was the first time I've used the LR 4.2RC and ACR 7.2RC with the Sony RX 100.  I plugged the card into both the regular Eye-Fi USB reader, and into my Hoodman USB 3.0 reader.  Of course, LR doesn't like the Eye-Fi reader, but it loves the Hoodman.  Finally, it recognized the Hoodman and the Eye-Fi card.  I have previews set to minimal and I was attempting to import all the raw (ARW) files into Lightroom.  When the initial previews come up as I start the import process, it shows about 1/3 of the previews and then tells me it can't read the rest, including MP4 files.  When I actually begin the import, it simply times out and reports that it was unable to import ANY of the ARW files, nor the MP4 files.  I have no trouble reading 63 files into Raw Photo Processor so I know there is nothing wrong with any of the files.  I can only conclude that there is something wrong with LR 4.2 and/or ACR 7.2.
Anyone else reporting this problem?  I'm puzzled because this is the ONLY time I have ever had trouble importing files from supported cameras.
    Thanks for feedback.

Well.  After some experimentation, I discovered what the problem seems to be.  For reasons completely opaque to me, Lightroom expects not only that the Eye-Fi card will be read from its own reader, but it also expects that the Eye-Fi helper application be installed and running.  Of course, this means that I end up with duplicate copies of every file - once to the Eye Fi directory, and again to the appropriate Lightroom Folder on a completely different set of drives.   I guess the conclusion I can draw from this is that without the helper application, the Eye Fi card is dumb and the images only partly visibible.  The Eye-Fi helper can import the .ARW files, but it doesn't display them because Apple hasn't updated its camera list to include the RX100.  Until they do, I think I'll just use regular cards and consign the Eye-Fi card to the hall of unhelpful cards.  Yikes, the darned thing is as expensive as the Lightroom upgrade.
    Sigh.

  • Aperture 3.1.3 Very slow importing raw files

Aperture 3.1.3 Very slow importing raw files please help
Pro Photographer. I have a Mac Pro Quad core 1 yr old with 12GB Ram. I import via 2 Firewire 800 card readers - A Lexar & a UDMR Reader.Only using them singly. System has 4 1TB hard drives 1. Applications, 2. Aperture Library, 3. Aperture Vault, 4 Time Machine
On a photo shoot, first CF card may download and complete in less than a minute but the next card with a similar number of images may take 10 minutes.
Sometimes if I swap card readers, this can speed up download but then everything slowly grinds to a halt.
I have closed down all other programmes, switched off Faces and Enable Gestures - switched off  Look up places.
Situation driving me nuts as we shoot and view images with customers immediately after the session and download time effecting the amount of time we have to do this. Nothing seems logical as such a high spec machine should theoretically fly through this.

Have you upgraded your OS ans all your Apps to the latest Versions and also rebooted the system?
Turn on the Activity Viewer (Windows ->Show Activity) while importing, to see how Aperture is spending its time.
Also launch some tools from the Application -> Utilities folder:
launch the Console window, to check for diagnostics /error messages
launch the Activity Viewer, to see how much RAM and CPU time Aperture and other processes are using.
How much space is free on your system drive? And on the drive you are importing to?
If you find in the Activity Viewer, that Aperture is slow, but de facto using not much CPU time, then the problem may be a corrupted Aperture Library or corrupted preference files.
Try to import into a new, empty Aperture library and see if the problem persists.
If you have no problems with a new Library, try the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics:

Start with repairing permissions and repairing the library.
If none of the measures outlined there, or you need further help, please report back.

  • Sony NEX-5N RAW file not recognized

I purchased and loaded from disk Adobe Elements 10.  When I try to open a RAW file (.ARW) from my Sony NEX-5N I get a message that it can't be opened because it is the wrong type of file.  How do I get Elements 10 to recognize the Sony NEX-5N RAW files?

this is the link for supported RAW formats

    1. check which version of ACR is installed with your PSE
    To check follow this  :
Windows :  Open Elements Editor from the welcome screen, then goto Help >> About Plugin >> Camer raw
Mac : Open Elements Editor , then goto Photoshop Elements menu>> About Plugin >> Camera raw and check the version
Check the version there, if its less that 6.5, then you have to update because the camers that you are usning , it requires 6.5 ACR version to work with PSE 10
To update goto Elements editor and and then goto help and update and this will show up the available updates for you PSE 10 which will include  ACR as well, once the update is done and installed , then relaunch the PSE 10 editor and then check the version once again  to be sure .
If it has updated to 6.5 or later then check your RAW files, they should work now..

  • Aperture confuses orf and nef and avi raw files. Suggestions on what to do?

Just used a new Olympus E-M5 in Italy and Germany, after many years of using Nikon products, most recently a D700 with fast glass. I have also used Aperture from version 1.0. Olympus RAW file format is .ORF. As I have uploaded the images into Aperture from the SD cards, I have just found that on one card about 100 files are mis-identified in Aperture's import window as either .NEF or .AVI files, rather than the .ORF files that they are. They are identified as .ORF files on the card itself.
I have not yet imported them and wondered if anyone has any thoughts about the wisdom of: (1) uploading them as they are, as the images seem to be fine; (2) batch changing the file extension to .ORF once they have been imported; (3) trying some variant of drag and drop, or moving the files to a new folder and importing from there; (4) something totally different and better.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
P.S. For those of you tired of tugging around big bodies and fast (and heavy) glass, the move to the E-M5 has been wonderful. Great Zeiss and Leica lenses are available (and much lighter!) and the images are magnificent, though smaller, in the 4/3 format.

How are you imorting from your Olympus? Directly from the camera or from a card reader? With some cameras the results can be different, if imported directly from the camea. If possible, use a card reader.
    My D700 used compact flash, so this SD card has never been in a Nikon camera;
That is not what I meant - I thought that maybe this particular card has a corrupted filesystem and needs reformatting. Can you check with a different card, if all is o.k. for newer photos?
Do you have any thoughts about changing the file extension from .NEF to .ORF?
If it are truely .ORF files, it should not matter, how you call the file. But you need to do it before importing to Aperture. Afterwards renaming may cause Aperture to lose the connection between master and version.
I just made the following test: I renamed a Canon raw file (".CR2") to  Nikon raw (".NEF") in the Finder and reimported the renamed file. In spite of the misleading ,NEF extension, Aperture recognized the file by its attributes as a Canon Raw, as this screenshot ist showing, because of the EXIF, also when I renamed the file to "-ORF"- And the "Raw Fine Tuning" brick shows clearly, that independent of the file name extension the correct raw develepment, that for the Canon EOS will be used.
But the Finder will show the "Kind" of the "NEF" file as "Nikon Electronic Format". So if it bothers you, rename the file.
Have you by any chance set a file renaming preset in the "Import" panel? HAve a look at the "Rename Files" brick in the "Import" panel and check the preset, that is used by going to "Edit".

  • Any way to process the new Sony a77 m2 RAW files , I know it is early :)

Any way to process the new Sony a77 m2 RAW files , I know it is early
Just curious if there is a work around now.  So, I can get it in LR
    HG

There is no Adobe raw support yet for this camera that was only announced May 1.
You’ll have to wait until the public release candidate for either LR or the DNG Converter becomes available at Adobe Labs at some point in the future:  http://labs.adobe.com/
If the sensor and optics are exactly the same as a previous camera, then you might be able to hack something into working by hex-editing the raw files to pretend they are that other camera, but I don’t have any information about what camera that might be.
About the best you can do, for now, is use Sony’s software to output TIFs from your raw files, and then edit those TIFs in Adobe software.  Be sure to adjust the WB before outputting the TIFs.

  • Please tell me what I need to get Lightroom 4 to read my Nikon 810 raw files.  Have downloaded all versions from 8.6 to 9.  Photoshop 6 has no problems reading these files

Can anyone tell me how to get Lightroom 4 to read my Nikon 810 raw files Have downloaded 8.6, 8,7, 8.8, and 9 raw converter files and none will work.

You haven't seen the raw image data until you look at the DNG files in Lightroom. The DNG file contains precisely the same raw data that was in the NEF file. The image that you see on your camera is the JPEG preview that is built into the NEF file. And the JPEG preview is affected by all of the in camera settings. And those settings COULD include Active D-lighting, sharpening, style settings, Expeed processing, etc. And none of those settings are going to be picked up by Lightroom.
It's natural and expected that the raw image data won't appear to be as good as what you saw on the camera display. But you can make adjustments to get the images looking even better than what the camera displayed. And that is what shooting raw is all about. If you read in your manual it will indicate that shooting raw produces an image that must be processed. And that is what you do in Lightroom. If you find a set of adjustments that you make consistently to all of your images you can make those adjustments on a newly imported image and then save new camera defaults. Then those settings will be applied to all images that are imported from that point onward. And will be applied to any already imported images when you click on the reset button in the develop module.

  • How can I locate the original .CR2 /  Raw file from Photos in finder?

How can I locate the original .CR2 /  RAW file from Photos in the finder window? I would like to know a easier way to open my files and use them in Photoshop than having to go to the Pictures folder, right clicking "show packaged contents", and manually searching for my CR2's / RAW's. It is also ridiculous to have to export the RAW file to my desktop, and then take it into Photoshop or another photo editing program.  I was able to do this in iPhoto and find I cannot do so in Photos. Please help? Can you please consider adding a right click function that says "Show Original file in Finder". That would make it so much easier and better for those of us who want a simple way to access the original files and use them in other editing programs. At least with iPhoto you could go to the top menu / preferences and find your items.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html is the place for feature requests and feedback
Rather than use the 'Show package Contents route, the supported and safer way is to export the unmodfied original.
