Aperture cannot import iPhoto library

I am unable to import iPhoto library into Aperture. It complains that the iPhoto version is older than 7.1.5 and thus not supported. However, I'm working with iPhoto version 9.4.3.
Any clues how to address this - rather odd... Just bought the software and have some urgent work to perform with it - so any quick helping advice would be great.

which version of "Aperture Install Notes" are you referring to? Is your Aperture version the most recent donwload Aperture 3.4.5 from the AppStore? You need at least Aperture 3.3. to be able to share the libraries between iPhoto and Aperture and to use the iPhoto Library as your Aperture library.
Now, should I re-install Aperture and wipe the "imported library" to make sure I have a clean sharing between iPhoto and Aperture or does it not matter? I do not want to have double the copies
It is not necessary to reinstall Aperture, if you want to start over with a new Aperture library. The Aperture Application and the Aperture libraries are completely independent. You can simply trash the current Aperture library (by default it is in your "Pictures" folder and called Aperture Library.aplibrary). Only make sure, that your original iPhoto Library still contains all your photos. When you imported to an earlier version of Aperture, you may have moved your originals from iPhoto to Aperture. That is why I am concerned about your Aperture version.

Cannot import iPhoto library

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have been unable to import my iPhoto library to Aperture. They both have all upgrades installed. I get a message telling me that my iPhoto library needs to be a later version. I have repaired permissions, re-installed Aperture and rebuilt my iPhoto library. I have iPhoto09 8.1.1 and Aperture 2.1.4. I can import photos from standard folders and I can view the iPhoto browser. Is there anything else I can do please?

Terence, thank you for the advice. I find that Aperture can import a new iPhoto library and when I used IPhoto Library Manager to investigate the original library it identified a corruption. However, it is unable to rebuild the library because of this corruption so I now have to consider my options. I could restore my iPhoto library to the version I had before I upgraded to Snow Leopard but this would not include any photos imported since then. As I said, I do have all my photos in a separate folder so I could import the missing ones from there adding key words etc for each. The iPhoto browser works in Aperture so I can import photos individually from the library by identifying them in Finder or I can just use my separate photos folder. So you might ask why am I bothered?. It's just that it annoys me when a fault like this occurs and I can't fix it. The iPhoto program doesn't seem to be affected by this corruption so, unless there is a solution which doesn't involve re-entering all the faces, key words etc into every photo I'll probably just live with it.

Aperture cannot open iphoto library

on trying to open my iphoto libraries on my external hard disc, aperture says the system is not supported. both are up to date and i can open them in iphoto. what could be the problem?
i use a mac air and a lacie hard disc.

hi terence, thanks for reacting. it's about the file system on the hard disk and i don't know about the format of the disk itself. will have to ask my better half tomorrow when he's awake as it belongs to him. all i can tell you is that we are dedicated mac users.

Can't import iPhoto Library - Aperture 1.5.2 & iPhoto 6.0.5

I have tried searching the Aperture discussions for a solution, and have only found one useful topic from July 2006:

However, it states this was a partial solution with Aperture 1.0 & iPhoto 6.0.1 or 6.0.2, and would be resolved in Aperture 1.1. We're up to Aperture 1.5.2 now, and I'm unwilling to uninstall iPhoto and revert back to 6.0 to try this solution. I have a SLOOOOW workaround (batch export original file at original size & format from iPhoto to temp hard drive folder, then import from file to Aperture), and have even tried working on an Automator script (not yet successful). Does anyone else have this problem?
FYI, the symptoms are: in Aperture File > Import > iPhoto Library... Selected iPhoto Library folder, Store Files in their current location, and click "Choose". The popup window closes, but nothing happens. No spinning beach ball, no error message, nothing.

Failure to import iPhoto library into Aperture 3

I am trying out a trial version of Aperture 3. When I tried to import my iPhoto Library into Aperture (and into the Aperture folder) I get an error message saying that it cannot import iPhoto libraries if they are in a version of iPhoto that is older than 7.1.5.
I have a brand new computer and I have the most recent version of iPhoto so what is this all about?

Keep in mind you need to select the iphoto library. To make sure you have selected it should be highlighted in gray.
You may run into additional trouble importing if the library is large. Here is the thread with a crude resolution.

Aperture cannot import anything from iPhoto and other bugs!!

Aperture is buggy. Recently, I just updated Mac OS X to 10.4.5 and also updated iLife 06. Now I cannot import anything from iPhoto. I tried import images from iphoto or import iphoto library, both not working. I can import images from other directories but jut could not see anything display under iphoto library directory. Trying to use import iphoto library, click choose and then nothing happens.
If you create a smart web gallery, all photos will be automatically duplicated.

I used Pacifist.app to find iPhoto in the iLife '06 install package and then installed the app in the default location replacing the bundle that was there.

I was going nuts trying. I have 6 iphoto libraries with 30,000 photos in total and some would import fine and others would not. couldn't tell the difference between them and had forgotten the update. just got a new iMac intel and wasn't paying attention. Causality

Aperture import iPhoto library, no duplicates

Merging iPhoto libraries into a single Aperture library risks duplicate images. Multiple iPhoto libraries might contain the same image.
According to the online manual there is a command 'File > Import > iPhoto Library' that would allow the 'Do not import duplicates' option. This command does not seem to exist in the current version of Aperture.
This may be a way to do this -
    Right or control click on the iPhoto library to 'Show Package Contents'. Move the Masters folder out of the package.
    In Aperture, click the Import arrow icon and navigate to the Masters folder. This allows selection of the 'Do not import duplicates' checkbox.
    Then perhaps run Duplicate Annihilator on the Aperture library. Use the option to label any duplicates and originals. Flag the originals and search for keywords 'original' and 'duplicate' to verify.
Any comments on this - will it work?

The recommended procedure to merge iPhoto libraries using Aperture is described here:

You will need the current Aperture 3 version - at least Aperture 3.3. and open all your iPhoto libraries in iPhoto 9.3 or later at least once.
Merging libraries is preferable to simply importing the "masters" folder - this way you will be able to save all your work - edits, tagging, albums, etc.
If you move the "Masters" folder from your iPhoto library, you may corrupt the library, and by importing only the originals and not the edited versions, all your work done in iPhoto will be lost.
If you have Duplicate Annihilator, you can still run it afterwards to check, if duplicates are remaining after merging. The "Merge" will only look for perfect duplicates - similar filename, similar size.

Both of those things you pointed out are mere *metadata*.
When you imported your iPhoto library, since you did a copy, your libraries are completely independent.
When I was in your situation, I moved my iPhoto library to an external disk and then went to the Aperture library to see how it behaved, even though i was 99.99% sure my iPhoto and Aperture libraries were separate.

Importing iPhoto library in Aperture

Hello this is the step that i follow to import the iPhoto library in Aperture
1- File>Import>iPhoto Library
2- Store Files in the apeture library
3- Import
When the importing process is finished from the image folder in Finder I can see that my iphoto library is 30gb but the Aperture library is 15gb (even if the aperure window when I import the iphoto library say that aperutre will import 30gb)
So I go in aperture and try to consolidate files but aperture say
The selection doesn’t have any referenced files
Any help?

My master folder in iphoto is 25gb in aperture is 13
So either quite a few masters have not been imported, or the masters have been imported with the wrong resolutzin, or your iPhoto "Masters" folder contains additional files - duplicate versions, or raw files.

So, please, look into the "Masters" folder in iPhoto and Aperture - navigate down the folder structure , until you finally find the actual images. Compare the sizes of the master image files, and look in the iPhoto library if there are duplicates.
If the sizes of the master files in iPhoto are larger than in Aperture, then something went wrong.
If on the other hand, there are duplicates in iPhoto that are not there in Aperture, then never mind.
You confirmed that the numbers of images are correct. When you compared the numbers of images in iPhoto and Aperture, did you make sure that iPhoto was set to show "Hidden Photos"? (in the main menu bar: "View -> Hidden Photos" should be checked)
Ps. How do I get bigger icon in left side if finder?
When you have a Finder Window selected, you can customize the View by pressing Command(⌘)-J, short for "View -> Show View Options". In the pop-up window set the Text Size to a higher value.
That will increase the size of the icons as well.

Imported iPhoto library - nearly 2x size in Aperture

I've just moved from iPhoto to Aperture, and imported the old iPhoto library into Aperture.
The iPhoto library was just under 5GB, but added nearly 9GB to the Aperture library.
Presumably somewhere in the Aperture library are versions I can safely delete, but am not sure where exactly to look.
Any pointers here would be much appreciated!

What do you mean by "reverting to photo"? "Revert" is not a function in Aperture so you must be talking about something else.
If you just performed the import of that many photos, Aperture will take some time to generate thumbnails. You can see if it is doing this sort of thing by {Command}-{Shift}-0 to show the Activity window.
Once Aperture generates all its thumbnails, you will have nearly instantaneous access to much, much better thumbnails than Aperture uses immediately after importing photos.

Insufficient disk space on Aperture Library volume to import iphoto library

3 Importing iphoto library to Aperture questions:
(1) Finally switching to Aperture because too many photos to manage in iphoto. When importing iphoto library it gives me the message: Insufficient DIsk Space - "There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need an additional 83GB of free space."
The photos are all on an external drive which has 150GB free space. I also tried moving the aperture library to another hard drive which has lots of free space. I want the Aperture library to reside on the external drive so I can share it between my laptop and desktop.
I tried this at the apple store and it was going to work. I came home and it now says it needs 125GB free space. Is this a function of which computer you use to import the library? What can I do because I can't spend hours at the apple store if it may take that long to import all the photos from the library.
(2) Is there an optimum way to import a large library, rather than all at once?
(3)Used iphoto manager to create a project library from an iphoto library. Now have 2 good libraries to import, one with about 35k photos, the other with about 8k. The 8k will have some duplicates from the larger one. When I import that one I don't want to import duplicates, but do want to retain the organization and labeling of those duplicates in terms of which albums and events they are in. Is that possible?

Or use Aperture's built-in and suggested way to deal with the problem of a Library outgrowing your system drive: make many of your Image's Originals referenced rather than managed.
Aperture lets you store any Image's Original on any locally-mounted drive. Moving your Image's Originals from inside your Library (in which case they are "managed") to outside the Library (in which case they are "referenced") is easy -- as it moving them back.
The two main complications that arise from using Referenced Originals are:
- you must back up your Referenced Originals in addition to backing up your Library. Backing up your Library _does not_ back up your Referenced Originals
- you must not make any changes to your Referenced Originals with any program other than Aperture. _Do not_ use Finder to move, rename, etc.

Not enough free space on Aperture Library volume to import iPhoto library into Aperture?

I purchased Aperture 3 from the App Store after using the free trial version for a few weeks. I downloaded the program and do not have any images imorted into Aperture yet. I tried to import my iPhoto library using File>Import>iPhoto Library and received this message: There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need at least 10GB of free space. I have iPhoto 11 and 25,000 images on iPhoto. I did review the Aperture owners manual and did not find an answer to this.

Well obviously you don't have enough space to import an iPhoto Library that is more than 10 gigs.
But that's not importat right now.
You have the makings of a major problem and you need to address it now.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Aperture, iPhoto an iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
If you don't you will suffer data loss. I can't stress this enough.

HT5260 No option to import iPhoto library to Aperture

I have just upgraded to the latest versions of aperture and iphoto (on 6th July 2012) and upgraded both libraries as instructed. Now I want to import my iphoto library into Aperture but when I selelct File>Import there is no specific option to import iPhoto library. I've seen this can be greyed out on other posts but on my aperture it was not there at all as an option.
I tried just import>library instead and selected the iphoto library. Everything was imported without another dialogue box to avoid importing duplicates (of which there are 1000s).
Can anyone help please?
I've tried restarting by the way! I've also got all the latest updates via software update

If you have the latest version of both (iPhoto version 9.3 and Aperature 3.3) then you have no need to import the iPhoto library into Aperature as both iPhoto and Aperature can share the same library (so you do not duplicate your storage) -- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
