Aperture Caption & Web Gallery

hi everyone,
I'm just beginning using the web galleries with Aperture.
Personally, I beleive that the best text to be shown beside each pictures would be the Caption field but someone at Apple have decided otherwise that this should be the picture file name. For me, file name are simply automatic numbers from my camera while I enter pertinent information in the Caption field.
I know, there is no way of setting this. *But today, I found that when I go into the RSS view of any gallery, beside each picture, I can read my Caption!* That's so weird of not being able to set this in the gallery view. I will ask for this simple but quite usefull feature of being able to set which information we want to show on picture...

I see... but you are talking about Aperture's web page while I'm talking about Aperture's web gallery. While the first one is a static web page, the second is using a more dynamic interface that can be used with .MAC. That's a new feature in Aperture 2.0.
Besides, this option of the T icon is EXACTLY what I would exept to have for Web Gallerie. It is still surprising for me that Apple haven't implemented this feature in both ways of publishing.

Watermarking for Aperture's web gallery

I really like Aperture's web gallery feature but would like to make use of the watermark feature for those images. That way, if images are 'borrowed' there is still a reference to my website.
Any ideas on how this could be done? I'm guessing the only way is to edit in PS and add the watermark there but is it possible to do without leaving Aperture?

Make a new Web Export preset with a watermark, just like you would a regular Image Export preset.

Dotmac published web gallery not showing up.

So I have now created 2 web galleries through Aperture 2. One shows up the other does not..
The URL it should be at is http://gallery.mac.com/cbchev68/100191 and it should be called Sushi Hunter.. The other one that is showing up is called Northwind Charters.
Im guessing there is some software bug here. If I go into Aperture -> Web Gallery -> Sushi Hunter. Then in the main window choose Web Gallery -> Visit Web Gallery, it opens Safari with the above URL and I get an error that the gallery does not exist.. What is even more interesting is that if I go into Aperture preferences, web gallery, it only shows the one gallery that actually shows up on the doc mac servers. I have to assume it is querying the dot mac servers for this data, as there is a 5 second lag or so before this list is populated.
Its as though Aperture created the web gallery, but then never actually uploaded the images..
Anyone else seen this?

Well its definitely a software bug, I just created another new album with a slightly different name and it looks like the photos are now uploading and properly showing up.

Aperture and .Mac Gallery

Hi there! I downloaded the trial version of Aperture 2 on my G5 Dual 2.0Ghz. With my X800 XT it sounds to work faster the the first version, but I have got some troubles with .Mac gallery. I have installed Little Snitch on my G5, and when I run Aperture, it asks me the authorization for logging to .Mac gallery. Well, I allow the connection, but Aperture becomes unusable, absolutely slow. From the monitor network of little snitch I see that there is always an exchange of data from Aperture to .Mac gallery. This strange connection is always active even if I don't have any .Mac gallery in my library, or when the .Mac gallery is already published. I already checked that if I don't allow the connection, no data are sent ore received and the speed of Aperture is good. Can anyone tell me how it's possible that?

I've been researching the same issue. I have a .mac account and have been playing with iPhoto '08, creating albums and publishing them on my .dot mac Web Gallery. I love the features of the Web Gallery (syncing, downloading pics, other people uploading pics, subscribing). All of these features at the touch of the Web Gallery button at the bottom corner of iPhoto have made me a Mac Convert!
That said, I like the "expanded" features offered in Aperture (referencing to masters, editing, seemless editing with Photoshop, better templates for albums and web stuff). However, I recently created an "Album", a new "Web Gallery" from that album and then clicked the "Publish to .mac" button. Voila! It sent it to Homepage in .mac instead of "My Gallery" (the one I set up via iPhoto). Both are visible in my .mac account, but there should be a way to publish my Aperture album/web gallery to "My Gallery" instead of Homepage. I'm trying to avoid importing the Aperture photos into iPhoto because it copies them into iPhoto creating a nasty disk space issue for me. In fact, that's one of the major reasons I wanted to use Aperture (so I could simply "reference" the photos on an external drive).
Let me know if you hear of any solutions.

Using captions (or, hiding file names) for Web Gallery with Aperture 2.0

Is there a way to add captions to pictures displayed using the Aperture 2.0 web gallery without changing the actual file name? I'd like to keep the file name but add a caption to each photo if possible.

I'm not making extra versions for this, just using the version name as the name in the web gallery. If you are not already using the version name then it lends itself to web gallery naming nicely. If you are using version names already, perhaps reconsider how necessary this is to you as you are tying up this other potential use.
My file names all contain a date and index number but I try and use more 'user friendly' version names if part of my final output will be for web galleries. This is good for clients as they don't have complicated names to order, but it's also a cinch to find the files using the search bar in Aperture.

A workaround for Aperture users to use .Mac Web Gallery

As a user who recently switched to Aperture - I was hugely disappointed seeing some amazing new photo-related features in iLife '08 not available for Aperture users. Let alone the cash for purchasing software suites, I can't convince myself switching back to iPhoto for a single feature. So I googled and searched around...
Some pre-requisite for the workaround: You must have iLife '08, Aperture and .Mac installed.
_*Solution 1*_
Create an album in Aperture that contains the images you want to upload to your .Mac Web Gallery. In iPhoto '08, create an empty library, then File > Show Aperture Library, choose the album and import images from there.
The downside of this is the images are your Versions in preview quality.
_*Solution 2*_
Export Versions from Aperture and import the images to iPhoto and perform the upload.
_*Solution 3*_
For users building websites in iWeb, I have seen threads that one could use the media browser in iLife suite to perform similar result but it also limits to the preview quality of Aperture.
I would have to say even the workaround is hugely disappointed but I can't see any other solutions at the moment. I couldn't recall my last ocassion on having such disappointment for Apple's software development.

Apple really needs to rev. Aperture so it sends photos directly to the new .Mac Web Galleries.

How can I create a link to an external site in my aperture web gallery?

Very keen to add a link to my main home page so people can go from my web gallery at www.smartstreets.eu back to my home page at www.smartstreets.co.uk
Anyone know a way to do this?
Also wondered if I can change the font, size, format (eg bold etc) in the theme I have chosen .. this seems to be set and cannot be changed.
Any ideas? Any places I can try for great third party web gallery themes? Thank you!

I don't know how to accomplish this when using Aperture's built-in web gallery feature. My suggestion may help until you find out how to do that. I suggest buying iLife '08 and using iWeb to create your web galleries. The iWeb media browser shows your Aperture library and albums so there's no need to export-import. You do need to generate previews for photos to use in iPhoto. iWeb is much more powerful than Aperture's gallery layout tools, plus there are many themes available. Think of iWeb as an export plugin for Aperture.

How to add title/caption to each image in Bridge web gallery

Hi,
I am creating a web gallery within Bridge and I want to add a title and caption to each image in my web gallery. How do I do that? The only thing I see is the Site Info. section and that adds a title and caption to the entire web gallery (including each image) and I want different titles and captions for each image. There must be a simple way to do this I just haven't figured it out yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks Curt Y for your help. The thing is I have to use only Bridge. I looked up this problem on http://www.experts-exchange.com/ and they said it was not possible to add titles and captions for individual images (slides) in a web gallery in Bridge. They seemed to imply that this was overlooked. So I input what I could based on what was provided by Bridge and turned it in. Thanks to all who viewed and replied to this post. I appreciate it.

How to include Aperture web gallery in dreamweaver site

With the demise of mobile me I need to find a way to keep my personal website photo albums (web galleries) that I currently publish via Aperture web gallery and then use a hyperlink from my Dreamweaver web site. This means visitors can view the photo's from a link button but the actual images they see are Aperture Web Galleries. This method has worked for me for a while now.
I know you can save a complete web gallery from Aperture onto a local drive rather than upload to mobile me. Does anyone know a beginners (ie me) guide to include that Aperture web gallery directly into a Dreamweaver site?. It feels like it should be possible but can't find any help.

What I do, to link my Aperture galleries to my iWeb pages, is to export the galleries from Aerture to my disk and then to upload them using ftp to a folder at my web hostings service. Then I link the iWeb pages to the gallery using link button or string. I use the free FTP program CyberDuck http://cyberduck.softonic.de/mac to copy the gallery using ftp. If your web hosting service allows ftp transfer, you could do the same. CyberDuck is really a smart little tool, but any program that allows ftp transfer would suffice.

How to add Web Gallery captions in Bridge CS5

I am creating a photo album (web gallery) in Bridge CS5 but there doesn't seem to be a way to add captions to the photos. I don't want the File Names to appear, I want to be able to choose several photos to have captions which I will type in. Is there a way to do this? The web gallery template I am using is Left Filmstrip.

Web Gallery not showing in Aperture's browser window.

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this. I create web galleries all the time and they work fine. For some reason when I create a new web gallery, instead of seeing the interface with the web preview (where you get the all the setting for customizing the web gallery and the export/publish buttons), I just see the image thumbnails in the Aperture browser. I even went to web galleries from old projects and is displaying the same way. Has anyone had this problem? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Web Gallery Slide Shows: Music and Captions an option?

The title sums up the question. Can web gallery slide shows (on my .Mac account) be made to look and sound like the slide shows i'm running in iphoto - with captions and audio?

You can get the captions to be displayed in the web gallery by running this script to move the description to the title field before you publish the gallery. After the gallery is published you can change the title back to the file name with the Photos->Batch Change menu option.
Have you considered using iWeb to create a photo page/slideshow and add the music to it. Here's a test page of such a setup. Be sure to read all of the comments on the linked page as there's a minor error noted in the script that is easy to correct.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Different caption for each photo in web gallery

When you take your selected Photos from Library to WEB is it possible to have a different caption for each photo. If I select 1 photo from the import and change its caption using the caption popup in the "Image Info" pane all the image captions change even the unselected ones.
How can I change individual photos so that they will have individual captions in the web gallery?

You should change the caption metadata field in the Library module. Go to the Library module, select the image you want to change the caption on, in the right panel, scroll down to the metadata section. Make sure that the popup to the left of metadata is set to "default" and you should see the standard metadata. Simply type your caption here. Then, if you've done this for all your photos, go back to your web section and make sure you set the caption popup in the image info section back to "caption", which will use the info in the caption metadata field for each photo automatically.

Missing Metadata in Web Gallery images exported from Aperture.

Images that I export directly to my .mac web gallery from aperture do not show any meta data on their info pages. In aperture the images have all meta data.
I have checked all the presets and all include metadata. There is no specific preset for web gallery I notice.

I want to change all the metatdata in groups to copywrighted. I can not seem to do this. There could be a checkbox on or off when importing. This would be perfect for bringing in older copywrighted archives.

Needed: variable weblinks in flash web gallery title & caption fields

I know that one can put a fixed URL as custom text into a LR flash web gallery title or caption fields and simply click on that field in a gallery and go to that website. However, that URL is fixed and shows up for all images in the gallery. I would like the ability to have that URL vary by image. That is, I want to be able to setup custom text for a title or caption gallery field that inserts an image's certain metadata value(s) within a URL string. E.g., have LR web gallery custom text of the form:
click here for foobar
result in the browser going to URL held in the current image's title metadata.
This almost works now (LR v1.4) ... Such a custom text title displays correctly. And if I left click on it and choose "copy link", the correct URL is in fact there. Unfortunately a right click doesn't take me there as it would if the custom text was a constant URL string, instead of having one or more embedded image metadata tokens.
