Aperture cataloguing problems

Hi, I've 2 related problems  with Aperture 3.2.1: (a) I cant import into pre-existing folders and (b) I cant apply keywords to a group of photos at one go.
(a) Importing files into pre-existing folders. I began a rough cataloguing process last week and noticed that when I have tried to update a folder with new photos Aperture either did nothing or it removed the images  from the database  and refused to 'see' that there were files in the source folder. I have to deselect the

Aperture insists on a new folder.
But your screenshots are showing that this is only happening, when you have the "Do not import Duplicates" flag disabled.
When I am trying to import into an existing folder it works; I can select the destination project I want to add to in the "Destination" menu, even after Aperture set this temporarily to "New Project", but I can change it back.
Only, when I disable "Do not import duplicates" and select an image that I already imported for import, the "Destination" is locked to "New Project"  or other projects, but I cannot select the project, that the duplicate images are already in.
That why I asked, if you want to import duplicates.
noticed that when I have tried to update a folder with new photos Aperture either did nothing or it removed the images  from the database  and refused to 'see' that there were files in the source folder.
The "Import" window should be empty, if the folder you select contains only duplicate images. Then Aperture will not show the duplicates in the Import window, if the "do not Import duplicates" flag is set.  Are you sure, that the photos you want to import are not already somewhere in your Aperture library? Imported from the Photo Stream or in your Trash, or marked as "Rejected"? That the images do show only, when you disable "Do not Import Duplicates" suggests, that the images already have been imported.
You could test this by searching one of the filenames of the images you want to import. Go to the "Photos" view and enter  the filename into the search field of the browser. Are the images already there?
If the images are indeed not yet in the library, but still Aperture is not showing them in the Import panel, when you disable "Do not import duplicates", your Aperture library may be corrupted. In that case repair your Aperture library, see Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library.

  • Any way of finding out how Apple will solve the Aperture / ACR problem?

Has anyone out there gotten any comments from Apple support or other people "in the know" about how Apple is going to solve the Aperture / ACR problem, and any potential time frame?
Of course, Apple is going to work on problems with its own RAW conversion; that goes without saying. But does anyone have any knowledge of whether Apple is going to open up the ability for Apple to send RAW, unconverted images to Photoshop, so that ACR can handle them?
I think knowing this now is pretty crucial. I am willing to live with the pain Aperture is going to impose on my workflow, in exchange for the file organization benefits it provides, IF I know that I'll be able to use Aperture with ACR soon (near term). But if Apple is going to just tinker with the RAW converter, and not attempt to send RAW files to ACR, then as someone else posted in another topic, this could be a long wait, and other companies have taken years to hone their RAW converters.
This is kind of my last-ditch effort to keep Aperture around, and build my workflow around it. If I know that within a month or two at the most, I'll be able to be using ACR directly when editing new versions, then I'll absorb the pain until then. But if I am looking at waiting six months for it (several man years), or riding out the process of Apple trying to get their own converter fixed, then as much as I don't want to, Aperture is going to get returned or hit eBay.
Does anyone have any idea on this? I've held up my projects for the past week trying to reorganize my workflow to work with Aperture, and I've got to pound the gavel, make a decision, and pursue a direction. Knowing what direction Apple is going to take with this makes all the difference in the world in what I do.
Thanks in advance for any info you can pass on.

This "Open External Editor from Master NEF", versus open from a dynamicaly created version is, I have decided, crucial.
I am getting less clumsy with the interface, but I simply can not get all white balance, and noise reduction done on my best available light shots.
ACR in CS2, and a subsequent "Neat Image" scrubbing is excellent for this.
The automatic association within a stack, of the resulting flattened file would be a big difference. I agree a formal statement from Apple would make me more inclined to really commit to Aperture for all my work.
Going one step further, it would be nice to keep the layers on the round-trip Master file, even if you would work with a dynamicaly created version of the returned "master" within a stack. It would occupy more disk space, but would do so only for those images where the user has made a quality decision.

  • Out of the Box   Aperture 2    Problem with viewer

I loaded Aperture 2 and was getting familiar with the settings. I was following along with the small book that came with the software. I was only as far as Chapter 2 moving between the browser and viewer and checking out the metadata. The viewer went to a white blank screen. The full screen option works fine and the browser is also working properly. I thought that maybe I hit a hide key but I couldn't find any reference in Help pertaining to a hide key for the viewer. Any advice is welcomed.
    Larry

I'm having the same problem. I wasn't doing anything special when it broke. I can't get the viewer to come back though. I just get a white pane where it's supposed to be. Fullscreen works fine.
The browser still displays images, but only every third row. Reinstallation might fix it. I'll try that.

  • Migrate from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3 - Problems with DNG

    Hello : )
I will migrate from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3. I've tested Aperture for a while and I like it, but I have one problem. If I import DNG files, I lost all the settings I've made in Lightroom, except Metadata. Is there any way to import DNG files and get all the settings? If not I think a migration to Aperture will not be possible to me, because I've over 50.000 DNG files and I don't want to convert them to tiff or other formats and lost all the benefits of the RAW files.
    Thanks

  • Aperture 3 problem with Sony NEX-5n raw files

    Hi all,
I have a Sony Alpha NEX-5n camera and my brother advised to take the pictures in raw format in order to keep all the information the sensors gathered when making the picture. The problem I have is that the software Sony provides with the camera does not allow me to convert the raw files into other formats. I downloaded Aperture trial because my camera was listed in Apple webpage as one of the models that can use raw files with Aperture. My problem is that every time I try to import the raw files, Aperture tell me that it doesn't support the format, and I cannot open the photos in raw and therefore I cannot work with them. I can work with the JPEG, but that is not what I want.
I wanted to buy Aperture, but there is no point for me to do that if I cannot work with the raw files. Maybe it is the trial version, but then Apple would be posting the wrong information in the webpage and therefore should remove my camera from the list (it doesn't say anything about apgrades or updates).
Does anyone else have the same problem? Can anyone confirm that once I buy it, Aperture works with the raw files even if I have to update it?
Thank you very much. I am a Apple fan, but if it doesn't work, I will buy Lightroom or Corel even if they are more expensive.
    Savarena

    Hello Savarena,
Try to install the RAW compatibility update: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.9
    - if is possible to do that with the Trial Version. This update supports your camera.

  • Aperture 3: problem when re-processing raw files to the latest converter

After converting to Aperture 3, many of my Nikon D80 raw files are coming up with the message:
"This photo was adjusted using an earlier version of Apple's RAW processing."
Aperture 3 offers a "Reprocess" button next to the message. Every time I click it, the images gets messed up with a big spike in the highlight end of the green channel. Is this a bug? Anyone else seeing this?

I faced the same problem when importing from my card reader. I chose to save the A3 library on a removable disk. The importing took ages to finish, and then all the pictures had a green color. It said that the pictures were processed using an earlier Apple Raw processor, and I had the Reprocess button. I did that and nothing changed.
I restarted A3, and now my project has disappeared even though it is available on disk.
I opened the original library on my MB hard disk and the photos showed fine.
I'm going to retest this, by importing the pictures to the default A3 library, maybe it will then recognize my pictures and process them correctly.
EDIT: when importing to the default Aperture Library (not the one on a separate drive), it's very fast, correct, and no problems. I'll guess I'll have to backup the old way...

  • PSE 8.0 - Catalogue Problems

G/L, Many thanks for your advice but I still have a problem with PSE.  I use the Program principally as a Photo data base and for the creation of  family Albums and associated slide shows with music. As my PC Solid State C: drive was reaching capacity ( it is only 100Gb) my PC supplier advised and indeed  moved remotely the photos from the  C: drive to the D:.  This was no problem but now a good number of the photos' in my PSE Albums show the yellow question mark saying it is a missing file. The 'Reconnect' option is good if only I knew where to find the photos, I just do not fully understand how this works!  In addition, scores of Photos in the catalogue are in quadruplicate, is it possible to remove duplicates without interfering with the albums? Having spent a good number of hours /days trying to locate these 'lost files' I am getting ready to give up PSE and stick with the PC  'My Pictures'.  However will persevere a little longer-fingers crossed! I also seem to have several copies of the catalogue, probably different backups. I just wish there was a way for the PSE Program to automatically locate those photos anywhere on the PC as, not being a PC wiz I find this so  difficult which is a shame as I do like the Program. Is there any PSE experts in Cheshire, UK?  Would PSE 11/12 provide a solution? Any further suggestions would be gratefully received as my PSE is in a bit of a muddle? Many thanks Sonny Benhar [email protected]

How did you move your pictures to the EHD? Did you do a PSE backup/restore or just move them outside of PSE? If you moved them outside of PSE then your best bet(if you can do it) is to put them back from wher they came and do a backup then a restore to the new location.
Your extra catalogs are not due to doing backups, a backup makes a copy of your catalog and puts the "backed up" catalog with the "backed up" pictures. Somehow you have created the extra catalogs.

  • Aperture 3 problems syncing to iPhone

I'm trying to sync "selected albums" from Aperture 3 in iTunes 9.0.3 and can't get the smart albums "In the last week" & "In the last month" to show any photos. They list 0 photos.
Furthermore every time I sync, iTunes automatically unchecks the "In the last month" selection.
Anyone have a fix? I tried rebuilding previews, thumbnails and deleting the "iPod Photo Cache."

Had same problem after upgrading to the great new Aperture 3.0
Have been on the phone with all the Aperture experts..to make the sync work with iPhone. To no avail.
They suggested building new database, etc. etc.
I believe I have now finally found the solution: 3.0 is 64 bits and you need to redo the prpcessing of all your images for iTunes to sync properly.
Try: "control click on project" in Aperture. In doalog box: Click on "reprocess masters"
Do this first with a small project as it take long.
Then try to sync with this project ONLY (unselect all others) and you will see that it will now sync with these processed pictures.
Also: keep Aperture open all night as it will process, without the above action in the background...
    Hope this helps.

  • Aperture Streaming Problem

    Greetings everyone.
So, I've recently purchased and AppleTV and while most everything is turning out perfectly, I'm having a major issue with getting my Aperture photos to stream to the AppleTV and I was hoping that someone here could should some light on the issue for me.
I have set the ATV-iTunes relationship to be a streaming one, not a syncing one. If I select the option to "Share Photos From iPhoto", I am able to stream the photos in the that library to the ATV, but when I switch the configuration to "Share Photos From Aperture", nothing ever works. In iTunes, the two options to share "All Photos and Albums" and "Selected Albums" both say "(0 Photos)" next to the option, but I am still able to read the project/folder names from my aperture library in Album Selection field, but none of the pictures are being recognized.
I just upgraded to Aperture 2 this evening, but I had the same problem yesterday with my aperture 1.5.6 version.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    I'm pretty stumped by this.
    Thanks y'all.
    Joe

Thanks for your questions here, but I ended up identifying and fixing the problem:
I hadn't generated previews for all of the files! That was it. The projects/albums were available because the iTunes could traverse the file system, but the lack of previews meant that it couldn't actually see anything contained within. I generated previews for everything last night and updated the library to share with outside apps and now all works well.
Sorry for having posted a question before fully completing testing.

  • Aperture Import Problem

I am attempting to import from a card into Aperture 3.  Everything looks normal until the very end when Aperture reports the import failed.  I tried importing from a different card that I had already imported awhile back and had the same problem.  Other than the import failure, everything else seems to work fine.  One note: this is the first time I have attempted to import after upgrading to Lion.
    Thanks - T.J.

Never mind.  Found out the problem is a file renaming problem.  When I import I rename the master file - that is what is causing the error.  Uncheck rename master file and everything works.  I will start a new thread.

I don't know if this is the place where I should post it since I can't find the aperture 3 section... but anyways, I have a nikon coolpix p100 camera, and I plugged it into my white macbook (2008) and it's not detecting my camera :S what's wrong?!

  • Aperture Preview Problem

I have just read a lot of advice on reducing aperture library size by changing the preview size in preferences.
    What seems to work is:
select a group of photos, right click and select delete previews. If I now try to drag an image to the finder it does not display the usual plus sign. So the preview has obviously gone.
Now select the group again and option click to get generate previews. This works and I presume the previews are now at the new size. Images can now again be dragged from aperture onto the finder.
However: if I do this (delete, Generate) for a single image I can no longer drag it onto the finder or anywhere else. I get the green plus sign, which indicates a preview is available for dragging but when I dop the image I get an error message: "The operation can’t be completed because it isn’t supported.".
I triede quitting and restarting aperture to allow it to do any rebuilding of sharing information but this doesn't help. There seems to be no way to get back to able to drag one of the images which was processed on its own.
I am using aperture version 3.4.5
I had hoped to be able to reduce the space used on my hard disc but I am wary of trying to resize the iamges any more.
Any clues? Is this a bug?
    -Paul-

That is hard to check for us, Paul. We'll have to find someone also running Lion.
"The operation can’t be completed because it isn’t supported.".
Check, if the error only happens with one particular library, or only in your user account. If it is a system wide problem, file a bug-report using the feedback form:  Apple - Aperture - Feedback
If it is only in your account, try the Trouble Shooting Basics:  Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics

  • Aperture load problem

In an attempt to upgrade Aperture from 1.0 to trial 1.5 I ran into a problem in which I can not go forward or return to 1.0. Currently 1.5 will not load after the install which was successful and nether will 1.0. I have attempted to find all pieces of the app and trash it and reload 1.0. If I attempt to open 1.0 now, nothing happens. Might I have a library file or hidden file which is hindering me?

G5 PPC running 10.4.9. There is only one copy of Aperture. I removed 1.5 and attempted to reinstall 1.0. Nether work now.
