Aperture causes kernel crash

Last spring I've upgraded my video card (I run a 2.93GHz Quad-Core Xeon MacPro 4,1, 16GB 1066Mhz DDR3 Ram) to ATI Radeon HD 5870 (purchased through the online Apple store).  Immediately after the upgrade, my Aperture would cause a kernel crash.  It would normally occur after working in Aperture for a certain amount of time.  I've taken my MacPro to the Apple store, and they replaced the video card (which they believed to be faulty).   I haven't had a kernel crash after the replacement for about 3-4 months, until it began happening again.
One persistent issue in addition to the kernel crash after the ATI upgrade was a series of odd visual anomalies.  My aperture images would sometimes load another image (rather than the thumbnail in the browser I had clicked on), and during editing, previous image would sometimes appear.
I don't believe the video card is at fault.  I had not experienced a single kernel crash with my old nVidia card.  My reason for the upgrade was better performance in Aperture, which certainly works faster and more efficiently with this card.
I'm pasting below the most recent kernel crash, as well as a screenshot of the visual anomalies I normally see while working in Aperture.
I'd normally take the machine back to the Apple store and have them troubleshoot it again. However, this is the busiest time of the year for our studio, and I can't afford to be without my machine for even a single day.  These kernel crashes sometimes corrupt my library, which needs to be rebuilt upon restart.  This worries me even more as I'm concerned about the integrity of client files.
If anyone can shed any light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Aperture causing iMovie crash

Installed Aperture 3 trial and have not had some of the issues others have had, but iMovie has been rendered unusable.
Launching iMovie, it splashes a message that it is searching for new aperture videos (there are none). The progress bar moves normally until it stops at about 95%, then iMovie crashes.
Never had iMovie crash before installing Aperture.
    Any suggestions?

I am experiencing the same problem - Aperture 3.0.1 installed, OS 10.6.2 fully patched and up-to-date. I tried all maintenance tasks for OS and Aperture (repair DB, etc). Could be a corrupted or non-supported video format? All video plays fine.
I used the Aperture smart album to find all videos in the Aperture library and rebuilt previews. iMove still crashed afterwards.
Until fixed by Apple, my workaround is export all videos to a new Aperture Library and delete from the main library. I used the smart album to select the videos and then selected "Export Smart Album as new Library". I deleted all videos in Aperture and emptied both Aperture and OS trash.
iMovie now opens without crashing. Waiting on a fix from Apple. Feedback sent.

  • RAID mirror with software utility caused kernel panic every time

Using disc utility to make a mirror of 2 drives, click create and i get kernel panic and have to power off machine. if i try to start the machine with either of the two disks in it (together or individually) i get same kernel panic and have to power off.
The disks are in an external storage array (sonnet d500). I have a second storage array with raided disks in and i have raided disk inside the mac too. these all work fine..
originally 2 weeks ago i had the 2 disks working in a group of 4 disks set as a mirror of 2 striped disks. One disk in this setup failed and with this config you can never 'recover'or rebuild it - you get a degraded mirror and you can backup the data, but you must completely rebuild the raid again as the mirror of stripes never lets you add a new disk in again.period. not good.
I replaced the failed disk and rebuilt the mirror of stripes. this lasted a day until a second disk failed (all 4 were bought at same time so i was kind of expecting that to happen once one failed).
i replaced the second faulty hdd and thought about my disk usage and decided i would not make another mirror of stripes and i would make 2 mirrors instead for safe-ish storage and then transfer data to a striped raid set for editing from instead of direct from the mirror of stripes volume.
i tried to delete the raid but got a kernel panic
if i started the machine with any of the 4 disks i would get a kernel panic.
i moved the disks one by one into an older G5 running Tiger and managed to erase the raid info on 2 of them. The two new ones had some strange raid info and the Tiger machien thought there was an extra disk in the machine and would not erase or partition or allow me to destroy the raid whatever i tried.
I will be moving these now into an old XP PC to try to erase the boot records etc and erase them to be able to use them again in either mac pro or G5. painful..
so.. i ended up with 2 erased drives and have 2 new drives with dodgy raid info that causes kernel panics on the leopard machine and wont go in the Tiger machine.
The two erased drives are what ive now been trying to use in the mac pro to create a mirror - this now caused kernel panics when creating the mirror to start with and when installed in the machine at all. so i will be erasing them again in the tiger machine soon (its busy erasing with zeros another new disk that i added to the Tiger machine 2 weeks ago which seems to have some fault when raided!!! but thats another story).
so.. is anyone else having problems with creating basic mirror in 10.5.4 or is it just me??
i have a sonnet tempo e4p card with 2 external sata disk enclosures, latest firmware for the e4p card. all other previously existing raid volumes are working fine. i have one set of 2 striped disks, one set of 3 striped disks and one set of 2 stripes which are mirrored - all happy and working fine. but i cant make a new mirror of 2 disks...
I phoned Apple support and they said all raid info was kept on the disk itself and nothing on the actual machine and suggested i take the machine to an apple care centre for some tlc (although its disk i am having a problem with). since all my other disk arrays work fine i don't really want to rebuild the whole machine from scratch if i can avoid it.
Any suggestions of what i can try ??

well it turns out the new disk i bought just werent any good. my g5 powermac raid mirror issue was related to one new disk with lots of bad blocks (speed tools showed that up) so i have learnt my lesson on cheap non raid disks for raid..
am waiting on a couple of new ultrastar enterprise disks to tuen up so i can go back to the macpro and try to add a mirror again.
i am still stuck wih several new disks that i cannot format now in the macpro on leopard or on the g5 powermac with tiger.
ive tried softraid and that cant do it, speedtools pcformat util cant do it, disk utility crashes when i try to eras them and diskutil from termianl starts then doenst get anywhere and my pc sata card doesnt work so my last resort pc option still doesnt help me clear the partition map on these drives - ones that diskutility on leopard made for me - and drives which still cause kernel panics on the macpro if i put them in it..
here is what diskutil says on my g5:
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier
    0: GUIDpartitionscheme *465.8 GB disk0
    1: EFI 200.0 MB disk0s1

    1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk4s1
    2: Apple_HFS tempi 931.4 GB disk4s3
disk0 is the one with the bad partition info.
it thinks it has a double raid as the console shows on startup:
(both store45 and cache it thinks are on this disk - cache was my old mirror of stripes set on other machine, store45 was new name for my mirror, so seems like it hadnt deleted the original raid partition info before making new info which now kernel panics)
    Jul 18 18:48:05 localhost kernel[0]: AppleRAID::degradeSet - starting the set "STORE45" (B9C48619-6B2C-4547-A01E-4864754EA7E2).

so currently i have 2 new 500gb disks which cant be partitioned back to anything at all on either machine. looks like i will have to buy a new pc to reformat them..
any suggestions of how to clear the partition map info and get them back to freespace ??

  • Constantly getting kernel crash errors

    Hi,
I have a Power Mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet with 704MB RAM, dual 500MHz G4 processors and 16MB VRAM and it is running Tiger (10.4.11) and I keep getting that weird error that says "You need to restart your computer" on a black dialogue with a giant power button in the center. I believe this is a kernel crash message and it's getting very annoying. I have to keep hitting the restart button or force the computer to shut down and I don't like doing this. Will my computer be harmed if I do this? Why is it doing this? I think it may be related to my really cheap USB WiFi card I have installed cause that's when it first started. When I pulled the card out (cause it wasn't working correctly) and popped it back in then I got that message a few seconds later.
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I checked the log and it does say a few things about USB so maybe it is that. I posted the log below so you can double check. As long as it's just that WiFi card then it doesn't matter since I already ordered a new one (PCI 802.11g). But, will I have to reinstall my OS now that I got so many kernel panics? Do those mess up my hardware or software?
Here's the log: (note that this isn't the whole log, just the last two crashes since it would take up too much space to paste the whole log.

  • Booting with custom kernel crashes after update

    Hello,
I have a custom 2.6.33 kernel compiled and installed without the use of abs on my system. Some time ago when on one of my updates pacman complained that it cannot install arc's 2.6.33, because the name of the folder it needed for the kernel in /lib/modules already existed(from my kernel). I simply backed mine somewhere else, and then updated with pacman, and overwrote the new folder with the backed one. However, after today's update, my custom kernel won't boot! I noticed that pacman intends to do kernel changes again, so I readied myself for repeating the sequence of actions from the last time, but now pacman did the update without complaining. However, on my next reboot I got a "scsi_mod: module already loaded" error, and boot hanged. After a second try, the error didn't seem to even show up again, but boot would still hang(with a long text ending in "---[ end trace 8336ecf974ba482a]---"). I checked my bzImage, the grub menu file, and there aren't any changes. Any help please?

    fsckd: the folders 2.6.27-lts, 2.6.32-ARCH, 2.6.33-ARCH, and the pacman-installed folder I turned to backup 2.6.33-ARCH_back2;
Anyway, I fell back to the 2.6.32 kernel temporary, so this isn't really an urgent matter, but I am still curious what caused this. Oh and karol, I don't believe this is caused by kernel crash, as loading the kernel finishes and then I get the error some time after starting udev and before the services from rc.d(sorry for the misleading topic subject, I corrected it).

  • Kernel crash due to bad RAM??

The question: After running many RAM tests using Rember I find all my good (maybe) sticks logging a "Stuck address", but without any failure notes and then the tests continue on without any more issues reported. Could this be normal?
Using Rember, I did identify one very bad stick and removed it from the computer. It was so bad that it caused Rember to crash and then immediately crashed the computer. I'm hoping it was the one causing all my problems.
I've been fighting a kernel crash problem for about a week. I suffered the first crash while attempting to download an upgrade to Flip4Mac (it allows Windows Media to play in Quicktime).
The first thing I did was buy a new 160GB external drive and backed up everything. Then I attempted to reload OS 10.3.9. Sometimes, just trying to restart from the OS X disk would result in a kernel crash. Sometimes, the install would begin but almost immediately end in a crash.
I reloaded 10.2.8 and got the system running again but crashes still occurred while trying to upgrade back to 10.3.9. After researching here and at other sites I concluded I might have a RAM problem. I downloaded Rember which is a GUI version of Memtest. That's when I found my one really bad piece of RAM. I have three more that all seem to test well except for the initial report of "Stuck address". All the remaining tests are passed fine and the system seems to be stable. Any comments from the more knowledgeable among us?

  • PS Extended CS6 causing kernel panics

I've been getting one or two a week. Haven't figured out yet what triggers it, but it only happens in CS6. I did recently reinstall the entire OS, so that's clean. Here's the latest panic info the reboot generates to send to Apple. Doesn't mean anything to me, other than the panic notation near the top of the info tells you what it thinks happened.

Only OS bugs, driver bugs, or hardware problems can cause kernel panics.
Yes, that is normally the case. I brought this up here because while working in PS is the only time this happens. I know it doesn't make sense, but there it is.
Not sure why the crash report stated 10.8.0. It's incorrect on two counts. For one, I'm working in Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. I do have Mountain Lion installed on a separate drive for testing, but that already is at 10.8.2. Regardless, it's not the OS I was even in, so I don't know why it reported 10.8.0 as the kernel.
Anyway, I noticed (after posting this of course) that there was a 13.0.1 update for PS CS6. I applied that and we'll see how it goes from there as the update is noted as fixing a number of crashing problems.

  • Airport causing kernel panics and kp in safe boot.

Last week I got my first kernel panic in years. It happened while I was asleep and checking an extrenal drive for bad blocks with TechTool. It turns out that the drive indeed had bad blocks and found that the cpu was shut down when I awoke. I started up the computer and it wasn't able to stay on for more than 10 min max before the next kernel panic. I checked here for more advice on kernel panics and started to try to narrow the number of culprits. Everything was unplugged and still kp. Instaled a new drive with a week older system from Time Machine and still kp. Reset NVRAM and replaced pyhsical RAM and still kp. Removed the Airport Extreme card and still kp. Booted into Safe Mode after all of the previously mentioned and still kp. I'm now going to take the drive and swap it into another body that I have to see if the root is actually on the drive on the physical hardware of the cpu.
I was interested in this thread and read all of the links that jpl posted. Airport causing Kernel Panic (?) Jason then replied that it had been solved due to a "permissions problem" I wish he gave more info on what exactly he did to resolve the problem as it's been almost a week now without any work being done for me.
I've also noticed this very strange behavior that might shed some light onto the issue. When I open System Prefs and close the window there is a strange colored pattern that will always flash after the window has been closed. I tried to post it to my me page but for somereason it wouldn't play for me so there's that and the YouTube version too.
    https://www.me.com/gallery/#100008/Prefs%20Screen
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zrTt88YdBo
In addition when the computer has started up and the system loads. Checking Activity Monitor shows that there are 50 or more threads active for the the kernel_task. Inspecting this doesn't seem to show any useful information.
Finally here are a few of the recent crashes I hope that someone might be able to shed some light on this extremely frustrating problem for me.

    Thanks in advance,

My vision is pretty poor, still cant see it, but...
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Scanner Causing Kernel Panics

I have an old Agfa SnapScan 1212u USB scanner and up until today it has worked fine. Then suddenly it started causing Kernal Panics. It happens about 30% of the time. It scans the first 10% then throws up the Kernel Panic message and I'm forced to restart. I have run the Disk Repair Utility, repaired permissions, reinstalled the Agfa Scanwise driver, deleted all scanner related preferences and disconnected all other USB devices but nothing seems to work. The only software update I've done recently is the August and Java Security updates. Could either of these things be the problem? This is the first time I've had Kernel Panics on my Mac Mini. I doubt it's caused by the ram. It has worked flawlessly since I put in the 1GB module in July.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers

Well, I downloaded Vuescan and set it up but now I have another problem. Vuescan constantly crashes. Sometimes it crashes when I'm changing settings and sometimes is crashes after a scan. I set the memory settings very high so it shouldn't be a memory issue. I've tried just about everything to get this scanner working with Vuescan. I even installed a fresh copy of Panther on my Firewire drive but it only reduced the crashes not eliminate them. I'd like to get Vuescan working because it seems to make better scans than Scanwise did. At least it doesn't cause Kernel Panics. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm beginning to think that it might be a hardware problem with the scanner.

  • Vodaphone dongle causes panic crash. Help please?

It is essential for me to use a Vodaphone dongle for certain work purposes. After installing Snow Leopard, dongle caused panic crash in my MacBook Pro. 4 panic crashes and reports to Apple later ... alert message appears as follows.
    " System/Library/Extensions/USBExpressCard can't wake_Huawei.kext"
Check out support and hit on Welcome Wake Up issues. More like Unwelcome! Is this the problem?
Have reinstalled Leopard since this dongle is the only way to connect at work.
    Any ideas?

    Hi everyone
Vodafone really have not excelled here but today tracked down a solution using the GlobeTrotter application to intall the right modem driver (not sure but I think this was the problem causing kernel panics)
Here is how to do it...
    1. Make sure you delete any extension from the System/Library/Extensions folder containing the word "Huawei" in the file name
    2. Restart
    3. Download latest version of Vodafone Mobile Connect (which by itself will still cause kernel panic if you install and then plug dongle in and install.
    4. Download latest version of GlobeTrotter Connect (http://support.option.com/att/index.php?title=GT%20Connect%20for%20Mac%2010.4.11 ,%2010.5.x%20and%2010.6.x%20and%20Manual&action=module20/index)
    and install it.
If asked to confirm new network preferences do so - this I think installs the updated modem driver which I think was the source of the kernel panic previously.
    5. Then insert USB modem - should not cause kernel panic!
    6. Then run the Vodafone Mobile Connect software and press Activate
It works and does not crash!!
    Good luck!

  • Kernel crashes & declining Apple service quality...?

I'm getting a little tired of my PBook falling apart little-by-little as each day passes by couple with declining Apple service quality.
I've been experiencing kernel crashes lately, where my mighty mouse will all of a sudden stop working, my entire comp will freeze up (approx 5min later) and then I'll get this grey and white message over inprinted on my screen asking me to "reboot" because "we're hanging here"... However, it doesn't happen all the time. Usually when I'm using a cpu or RAM intensive application (even apple proprietary apps).
As I mentioned above, I'm getting tired of all this happening because just two months earlier my computer would automatically go to sleep mode (even if I was in the middle of typing an email). The Apple Service guys chalked that one up to a poor cooling fan, replaced it, and unfortunately, my entire harddrive crashed as a result (all data was not recoverable).
I subsequently purchased an external harddrive because of my fleeting impression of Apple product and service quality.
Tomorrow I will take my PBook tomorrow to an Authorized Apple Service Provider (i.e. "MY MAC DEALER"). However, I know that they'll run the exact same hardware tests (i.e. TechTool and memtest, etc.) that I've already run, find nothing, and say that I owe them for service costs (because they found nothing). Then, I'll have to wait to catch another kernel crash, run down there and have them take me seriously. I'm getting a little fed up with all of this.
Additionally, when they replaced the fan on the original issue I was having, they put my PBook back together incorrectly so that it doesn't lie completely flat as it used to... I mean, it wobbles because one side it lower/higher than other sides (on the bottom). It's lop-sided. What kind of service quality is this?
I'm really hoping that someone at that massive corporation reads this email, takes ownership of the issue, contacts me, and re-affirms my reasoning for switching to apple from a pc. Because right now, I'm not seeing the extra dollars I've shelled out for an apple in service or product quality.
Other details: 3 year AppleCare still in effect.

I agree - you need to call Apple directly if the repair shop is not authorized by Apple. I had a similar situation with an authorized dealer. After receiving the PB back from a repair the computer wouldn't lie flat on a table. I began to look further and noticed that it had been dropped. The weight of the PB falling - even a short distance - can cause it to become bowl-shaped. It was acting erratic, some ports didn't work, etc., so I contacted the shop and they took responsibility and replaced the case, motherboard, several components, and I have had no problems since. Sometimes technicians have accidents like everyone else, but the shop should take responsibility.

  • Kernel crash when uploading FTP files

Just let you know, that I got Kernel crash, when I was uploading files using FTP Transmit.
I guess time machine make it crash.
I unplugged the HDD and all is ok.
This means no FTP, no Aperture............... and so many other things

Thanks for this, I just wrote a reply on the other thread too. I'm very grateful for that.
In my case there was no grey screen, just the sudden freeze (no beachball, nothing) -- the computer is working fine one moment and then instantly moves to a state where the mouse pointer doesn't move, keyboard doesn't do anthing, flashing cursor in the clock stops, and the only thing to resolve this is the power button. I don't know the technical term for this -- somebody told me 'hard crash' might be the term.
I'm wondering how to avoid this happening. It actually happens MORE frequently than the ominous grey screen saying 'You need to restart'. It's more common on the laptop than on the G5, though.
    Thanks again.

  • Kernel crash on USB data transfers on PB 1.67G

    Hi,
I have PG 1.67 GHz... recently a strange thing has started happening. If I connect any USB storage device, the after few hundred MB of transfer, PB Kernel Crashes. Any idea on what might be wrong?

Kernel panics are usually, but not always, caused by hardware. Have you run your Apple hardware test off your original OS X disks?
This may have some other ideas: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
