Aperture causing iMovie crash
Installed Aperture 3 trial and have not had some of the issues others have had, but iMovie has been rendered unusable.
Launching iMovie, it splashes a message that it is searching for new aperture videos (there are none). The progress bar moves normally until it stops at about 95%, then iMovie crashes.
Never had iMovie crash before installing Aperture.
Any suggestions?
I am experiencing the same problem - Aperture 3.0.1 installed, OS 10.6.2 fully patched and up-to-date. I tried all maintenance tasks for OS and Aperture (repair DB, etc). Could be a corrupted or non-supported video format? All video plays fine.
I used the Aperture smart album to find all videos in the Aperture library and rebuilt previews. iMove still crashed afterwards.
Until fixed by Apple, my workaround is export all videos to a new Aperture Library and delete from the main library. I used the smart album to select the videos and then selected "Export Smart Album as new Library". I deleted all videos in Aperture and emptied both Aperture and OS trash.
iMovie now opens without crashing. Waiting on a fix from Apple. Feedback sent.

Last spring I've upgraded my video card (I run a 2.93GHz Quad-Core Xeon MacPro 4,1, 16GB 1066Mhz DDR3 Ram) to ATI Radeon HD 5870 (purchased through the online Apple store). Immediately after the upgrade, my Aperture would cause a kernel crash. It would normally occur after working in Aperture for a certain amount of time. I've taken my MacPro to the Apple store, and they replaced the video card (which they believed to be faulty). I haven't had a kernel crash after the replacement for about 3-4 months, until it began happening again.
One persistent issue in addition to the kernel crash after the ATI upgrade was a series of odd visual anomalies. My aperture images would sometimes load another image (rather than the thumbnail in the browser I had clicked on), and during editing, previous image would sometimes appear.
I don't believe the video card is at fault. I had not experienced a single kernel crash with my old nVidia card. My reason for the upgrade was better performance in Aperture, which certainly works faster and more efficiently with this card.
I'm pasting below the most recent kernel crash, as well as a screenshot of the visual anomalies I normally see while working in Aperture.
I'd normally take the machine back to the Apple store and have them troubleshoot it again. However, this is the busiest time of the year for our studio, and I can't afford to be without my machine for even a single day. These kernel crashes sometimes corrupt my library, which needs to be rebuilt upon restart. This worries me even more as I'm concerned about the integrity of client files.
If anyone can shed any light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Import movies to iMovie from ipad2 causes iMovie error and crash
Movies taken with iPad 2 come into iMovie ok but HD Movie clips Taken with my Canon Powershot 1400 and imported to the iPad2 succesrully, will not import from the iPad2 to iMovie. Each clip gets an error and after about two clips fail, iMovie crashes.

ITunes doesn't see Aperture Library - iMovie doesn't see Aperture Library
Issues:
Nearly all of my videos in the Aperture/iPhoto library do not show up when I select iPhoto library option in iMovie and iMovie is unable to locate them in any other way. Sometimes the option to select the iPhoto library is completely missing.
iTunes does not recognize my Aperture library, and I get the following message:
"Your Aperture Library could not be found. Open the preferences window in Aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications." After reading through forums and multiple Genius Bar appointments here is most of what I have done:
Created multiple new Aperture libraries, selected them in Aperture, rebooted, switched back and forth - Note: iTunes DID recognize the new blank libraries
Booted Aperture with the Command + Option keys and run all three options to repair permssions and even rebuilt the database
Booted Aperture with the Option key and selected the library I was using all along (this worked for someone in a forum)
Opened iPhoto (not Aperture) and selected an option to share photos
Run "Verify Disk Permissions" many times under Disk Utility
Run "Repair Disk Permissions" many times under Disk Utility
Reinstalled OSX
Reinstalled Aperture
Reinstalled iTunes
Reinstalled iMovie
Run a virus and malware scan (no issues)
Verified that Aperture was set to share previews and had a Genius go through all of my options to ensure they were correct in iTunes, Aperture, and iPhoto
Have ran "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs" from the Command + Option + R recovery partition multiple times. Each time it just hangs for hours, the latest attempt ran for over 24 hours before I finally stopped it.
Oh yes, and I found and deleted the file com.apple.iApps.plist
None of these things fixed either of my issues. According the the Genius at my last appointment, now I have to call Apple Care and pay to get support. I must have misunderstood what the Genius Bar was about when I bought my Mac and why I purchased the One to One training. Before I call Apple Care, I was hoping someone might have run across this and can help me.
I asked the Genius if I now need to just create a new Aperture Library and move all of my content to it (that was the last resort for someone in a forum); however, he was concerned that even if this might work that I probably have deeper permission and/or other issues that need to be addressed and that doing so would not fix the root cause.
Thanks for taking the time to read through this issue.Understood. I thought perhaps the period meant that I was finished and just needed to call Apple Care and fork out the fee.
The formats are primarily .MOV straight from the iPhone. Since going to a Mac, I have pretty much given up on using my Sony Handycam for family videos due to the pains of having to locate, identify, convert, and export AVCHD video to watch on Apple TV. It is just too easy to take video with my iPhone and import it and immediately watch it, although the quality is nothing close to a dedicated video camera, especially indoors and in lower light. All of the video formats in Aperture are supported and most all of my older home videos and Sony Handycam videos are sitting on an external drive (hoping that one day I will have the time to figure out a decent workflow to access them after I work all of the bugs out of iMovie). Great thought though.
All my content is managed. After a handful of One-to-One sessions at the Apple Store, I finally learned that you could not reference videos in iMovie and had to either have them in the iMovie Events directory or in iPhoto (at least that was what she said). Their solution was to import the videos into iPhoto so they could be easily accessed in iMovie. After I had issues mentioned in this post their solution was for me to purchase Aperture that could handle larger libraries. This was supposed to fix the issue and allow iMovie to see my videos. When that didn't work they said that I needed to purchase Final Cut Pro. I'm just a Dad who wants to make a few memorable home movies for his family and I don't think that I should have to purchase a $300 application, especially after paying a premium for my Mac and the iLife software, which I am deeply regretting. But I digress.
I have repaired permissions again and am in the process of repairing the library and will rebuild it again if that doesn't work. It is taking longer so I won't be able to post the results until a later time. Definitely worth a shot to try this again.
If this doesn't work I will take the time to create a new Aperture library. Like I previously mentioned, this was the last resort for another gentlemen who had a similar issue. After doing this it might explain why the "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs" from the Command + Option + R recovery partition is getting hung up and not working. I'll post the results at a later date. If I could save just one person the time, gas, and stress I've experienced it would be worth it.
One additional question? I read a gentlemen's post that passionately argued against ever using iPhoto, Aperture, or iMovie to ever manage video files. He suggested using folders and a file naming system similar to what I used when I was on a PC using Adobe Elements. Do you have any thoughts on that?
For my situation, I have two concerns:
I'm afraid this would not allow me to watch the videos on Apple TV as simply as I can now (although I don't know this to be the case for certain). If the videos aren't in my photo library, I'm not sure how I would be able to access them through Apple TV.
Since I'm a proud Dad I have hundreds of video files spanning many years, so I also don't want to lose the ability to quickly peruse my event library and find content that I want to import into a project in iMovie. At one point I imported some video files to edit that weren't stored in iMovie, and I could only see the file name and date and had to guess if there was content on it that I wanted. When you have hundreds of clips like I do that isn't practical.
He argued that these programs were never meant to manage content and worked much more efficiently using this method. I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts.
Thanks again. -
Imovie crashes/won't import
I had a problem importing video from my sony TRV-250 into imovie 5 back when I first got my iMac. I called APPLE, reset PRAM and thought the issue was fixed because I was able to import. Hadn't tried again until now, and suddenly I find I'm in the same boat. It shows that the camera is connected but won't import, and crashes when I try to control the camera from the iMovie controls. I reset PRAM and that didn't work as it did the last time. I unplugged everything from the firewire ports(camera and ext. hard drive), restarted the computer and tried the bottom port with the top empty and it suddenly DID import, but stopped after 12 seconds and then wouldn't recognize my camera at all. It didn't even show that a device was connected in system profiler. I started over, resetting PRAM and restarting the computer with empty ports, and now it's importing. But it will only work from the top port, not the bottom. Does this make any sense at all? Why do I have to reset PRAM every-time I want to import video from my camera? If anyone has a similar issue or can shed some light on this I would really appreciate it.
iMac G5 20 rev. B Mac OS X (10.4.5)The only thing that makes it work is resetting PRAM everytime. Even then, only 1 of my FW ports will work. The other one always causes iMovie to crash. Unless I have a bad camera, bad RAM, or a bad FW port, it's not anything else on your list because I've checked it. My OS is updated from Thanks for your help. I'm lost.
Also I have updated everything. You mentioned that QT and OS shouldn't be updated. Is this what you meant? If so, do I have to reinstall the OS to go back to the old version? THANKS

Can't Play Video Through To Camera iMovie Crashes
I was working with iMovie 3 the other day and viewing the project on my TV using my trusty old Canopus ADVC 100 with the "Play Video Through To Camera" option checked in Preferences. Today I went to preview a new project and iMovie crashes everytime it finishes loading all of the clips with the play through option checked. The only way to open the project is to turn off the ADVC and uncheck the play-though option and re-save. It will load whether the ADVC is on or off as long as the play through option is not checked.
What could have changed?Hi David
This is a guessing question - so many ways things can go wrong.
May be You find some help in my list:
Mac:
- hardware
◊ Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
◊ I wonder how full your Mac's hard disc is. (David Babsky) A near full hard disk prevents Import/Capture. 10% free is recommended + space for Import/Capture + work space (about 4 to
5 times the amount needed for Capture) eg on a 200Gb hard disk You need 20Gb + (one hour tape)
13Gb + 50Gb = about 80 to 90Gb free space.
◊ Disconnect all other ext devices (FW and USB) exept Camera (and keyboard + mouse) and try again
◊ Reset PRAM
◊ Bad RAM-chips
◊ disconnect Mac from powerline (not just switch off, really plug out) for a few minutes to reset FW ports
- software
◊ File-Vault is on - turn it off
◊ Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
◊ Do You have desktop pictures or screen or energy-savers active? Try turning them off.
◊ Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good) OS X.4.0-5 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
◊ Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first) QT v.7.0.0-4 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
◊ Have you tried the crazy fix: Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now. Sue/SDillini
◊ Running iDVD at the same time as iMovie can cause problems: (Lennart Thelander)
◊ If You also have installed FinalCut Express/pro there are possibly problems with this
iMovie:
◊ remove bookmarks in iMovie project
◊ Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
Connection:
◊ don’t Daisy chain Camcorder <--> external hard disk <--> Mac
◊ FW-wire cable, is it OK?
◊ USB/USB2 is NO GO !
◊ Cheque FW connection at Camera end. OK? (Adam Smith1)
◊ Cheque FW connection at Mac end. OK?
Camera:
◊ The Camera is set to VTR ? (not as when You ”film” record with it)
◊ You may be need to go to the Camera menu and select digital out.
◊ defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC ! (if the A/D chip in the camera is harmed then it will say in iMovie that the camera is connected and You can forward resp. backward the tape but there will be no picture or sound just the blue screen).
◊ connect camera to power-line, not battery-only....(Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Canons don't allow daisychaining on firewire, make it "only device" on port (Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Cheque the menu on Your Camera so that it communicates with the FW digitally to Your Mac
◊ Date and Time is correct on Your Camera ?
Tape:
◊ Drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
◊ Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is pre-recorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.
More:
◊ follow advises here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43000
◊ follow Grandmaster Dan's advice for Sony cameras here: http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/usage/5020.shtml
NEWS: Jerry Harris writes:
I know that in a lot of the new Sony HD cameras, iMovie requires that you turn iLink Conv off. I would look for a similar setting for your camera. This setting has to do with shooting a movie in one format, and using the camera to import as a different format. For instance, if you shoot HD footage and have iLink conv on - the camera will send DV to the computer etc...
So, case in point: look for a setting on your camera that has to do with the video format and see if that helps.

I have ongoing problems with iMovie crashing. Crashes ("unexpected shutdown" as Mac OS calls it) seem happen at random during editing - today I lost two hour's worth of work.
The other problem seems to occur just after downloading from my video camera. When I try to save the project file it hangs (I've even left it running for a couple of hours) and I eventually have to shut the computer down. When I reopen the file most of the clips are still there but a large proportion of them have been dumped into the trash bin.
I know now to try and remember to save the project regularly during editing; today I got carried away with what I was doing and just plain forgot. Is there an Auto save feature that can be set to save at regular intervals during editing?
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to why "Save Project" immediatley after importing causes the system to hang?
ThanksThanks for this suggestion Sue.
My external drive is not formatted for Mac, it is formatted for MS Fat 32 which amuses me as I was told when I bought it from the Apple dealer it was formatted for Mac and not to use it with my PC!
I have over 100G of stuff on there which I presume I will lose if I attempt to reformat?
I am about to action your other suggestion re deleting and reinstalling the Preferences file on iMovie since it worked for the other person in on this discussion.
I have found all this extremely frustrating. I bought a Mac mostly for movie editing because I was told the software was easier to use and Macs did not crash. The software is ceratinly easier to use thean Adobe Premiere on my old PC but iMovie (and the Mac) have been far more unstable than my PC.
Thanks for your help Sue, this discussion forum is one of my few positive Mac experiences so far

Imovie crashed - how do I recover data
I was editing a project that included voice recordings thru the computer microphone and adding titles to describe the audio. My imovie program crashed/unexpectedly quit. When I restarted imovie ALL the data was lost. It looks like a brand new project. How can I recover the data? The originals have been destroyed.
Welcome to the discussion, Billishere. I wish there were more pleasant circumstances.
1. Look inside the Media folder of the project folder. There may still be media files there — video clips, songs, voiceovers. They may not show up in the project timeline, but they might still be there.
2. Look too for the project.mov file inside the project folder. This is a special type of QuickTime movie, called a reference movie, with no video or audio of its own, just pointers to files in the Media folder. It is called "Your Project Name.mov". Double-click on it to open in QuickTime Player. If the movie refuses to play, media files are missing. If the movie plays okay from start to finish, the media files are still intact.
If the project was saved just before the crash, the movie should be up-to-date. You can import the movie into a NEW iMovie project to deliver the contents of the old project to the new. Everything will arrive as a single clip, but everything will be there and play in the proper order.
If the project hadn't been saved in a long time, the movie may not help much. Each time we save, this movie is updated.
3. Or, you may be able to simply drag items from the Media folder of the project to the timeline of a NEW project.
One of two things might have happened:
1. If you imported video/audio but hadn't saved the project before the crash, that editing would be lost. The editing wouldn't have been saved to the iMovie project file, so iMovie wouldn't recognize the clips in the Media folder. iMovie would ask you about clips it didn't recognized when the project reopened.
In that case, the Media files might still be there. They won't be there, however, if you told iMovie to discard them, or if you've saved the project subsequent to the crash.
2. iMovie 4 (and earlier versions) were subject to several types of corruption. Although rare, one was complete destruction of the contents of the project file (the file where clip descriptions are stored) and worse, the trashing of all files in the Media folder. In both those cases, no recovery is possible. The stuff was simply gone.
As you describe the problem, either is possible. If the Media folder is essentially empty, profound corruption may have occurred. If, however, the Media folder contains lots of stuff or the QuickTime movie plays okay you may be able to rescue items.
CAUTION: At this point, do not save changes to the project. Doing so may cause iMovie to discard additional files it believes the project no longer needs
Good luck.

IMovie crashing, can't access my projects
Hi everyone, sorry, i can't find a similar topic already open?
I used iMovie 11 to create an hour long collection of home movies, with transitions, audio tracks, some sped up sections, etc. I tried to export it to iDVD yesterday, but the audio went out of sync with the video clips. So, I detached the audio from the clips, but just before completing this task, iMovie started crashing as soon as I would try to open my project.
My project was saved on an external hard drive, so I tried opening it on another iMac with iMovie 11. It worked at first, enabling me to finish detaching the audio, but because all my music tracks were saved in iTunes on my first computer, I needed to bring in all the music to iTunes on the second computer so that iMovie could access the tracks. Since bringing the music tracks into iTunes, i haven't been able to open my iMovie project at all. iMovie crashes as soon as I launch the application - it won't even show my project, it just crashes straight away.
It is crashing on both computers, I have tried deleting the .plist caches (I followed some online instructions, but don't really understand it), and I cleaned up my computers with OnyX. I did software updates, and do these regularly. I've tried restarting a million times. Both computers are only 3 months old and have plenty of memory available.
I'm at a loss, as I spent weeks of late nights working on this project, and now i haven't got a clue how I'm going to access it, yet alone burn it to a DVD. It was supposed to be a Christmas gift for family, and now I've got no Christmas presents to hand out! This is a total nightmare. If anyone can help I would be so grateful! Please help quick!
Kate.Thank you so much for your reply, I'm desperate for some help.
This afternoon my iPhoto said it couldn't be opened "because it was incomplete or damaged", so I decided to uninstall iLife 11 and reinstall it. This seems to have stopped the crashing problem in iMovie and has restored my iPhoto back to normal.
The problem I have now, is that when I open iMovie, I can see my project, but I can't edit it at all. I can click on 'Edit Project' but only if I open the project via by external hardrive (where it is stored), not directly from iMovie.
When it does open, I can't edit it, I can't preview it, the viewer isn't working (although sometimes i can see distorted, broken bits of images), and I can't play the project at all (not using space bar, not in the viewer, not in the preview mode). The only way I can play any clips is in the event browser. It doesn't seem to recognising the clips used in the project (as there are no longer any orange lines underneath the clips I've used).
I don't know what to do with it now - I can't even begin a new project because the viewer isn't working in a new project either. Is my project corrupted, and causing functionality problems in iMovie? And if so, is there a way of repairing the project?
Thank you for your kind help! It's really appreciated!!

After last iOS update imovie crashes continuously. It's impossible to use it. Help me, please
I had that when working on what i assume is a BIG project for Imovie on Ipad (9 minutes movies with mp4 from flip cam). What fixes it sometimes is holding the home and lock button, see the apple, it goes to black, then restart. After that, launch Imovie and waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit cause it can be long, hopefully it'll come back !
It worked for me after 2 weeks of imovie not responding -
IMovie crashes when browsing Titles, and when exporting movie.
Frequent occurance. Crashes when browsing Titles. When re-opening it goes to a previous project.
2nd problem, also frequent but always with one project. I have tried numerous things, all unsuccessful. Have gone back to iPhoto to redo slideshow, have checked photo permissions, then rebuild movie but still unsuccessful. Message: "EXC BAD ACCESS (SIGSEGV)".Sometimes iMovie Projects become corrupted and can cause iMovie to crash. This is what worked for me after months of frustration without any solution.
Copy the iMovie Projects folder to the desktop. To avoid confusion rename this folder Desktop iMovie Projects. Do not delete these projects from the Desktop iMovie Projects folder.
Then delete all projects from the original iMovie Projects folder for iMovie - found Mac HD > Users > (Your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects.
Either create a simple test movie project in iMovie or...
or take, from Desktop iMovie Projects folder, one of the projects that you know was successfully exported in the past and copy from the Desktop iMovie Projectsfolder into the original iMovie Projects folder.
Try launching iMovie again.
In turn take, from Desktop iMovie Projects folder, another of the projects and copy from the Desktop iMovie Projects folder into the original iMovie Projects folder.
Close and restart iMovie. Try to export this project
In transferring one project at a time you can isolate the corrupted project(s)

IMovie crash during Quicktime export
I have a dual G4 tower w/ OS X 10.4, and iMovie HD 6. I've got all the latest software updates installed.
I imported some video off of my Canon Elura 100, made a few edits and tried to export it as quicktime. I tried all the different quality settings, incl. expert/advanced. All but the "full quality" (.dv) export causes iMovie to crash.
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to resolve this?
Dual G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hi jh:
Welcome to discussions!
Do you have the most up-to-date QuickTime version installed? If not, try installing and if so, try re-installing it.
