Aperture crashed on me, then it did a rebuild but now when I try to open it all I get is the message: Warning. There was an error opening the database for the library "/Users/[Folder name]/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary".Only option is to press 'Quit'

I'd be grateful for any suggestions as to how I can re-open Aperture again.  It has been increasingly flaky recently and this isn't the first time it has done a rebuild but is the first time it has failed to start up.  Most of my photos are referenced.  Many thanks for any help you can give.

Dave-
You can try opening the old (problem) library by launching Aperture into Library First Aid mode and choosing to Repair (first option) or Rebuild the library. Before doing this, make a backup copy of the old library, since both Repair or Rebuild will write changes to the library database.
Repair is the faster and less drastic option, so try that first: After backing up your library, hold down both the Option and Command keys while dragging and dropping the problem library on the Aperture icon. The Photo Library First Aid window appears. Select Repair Database, then click Repair. After some time Aperture should open the library, if possible.
If that fails launch Aperture back into Library First Aid and select Rebuild Database. Depending on the size of your library this operation could take some time, up to several hours for a very large library. When the main window appears you may have some extra Recovered folders/projects. This operation rebuilds the library from scratch and is usually successful at reviving problem libraries.

  • I downloaded mavericks but the install failed. The message stated there was an error with the disk which required repairing.

Help please!  I downloaded mavericks but the install failed. The message stated there was an error with the disk which required repairing. Using disk utility repair disk is not available ( greyed out) and verify disk stops and says disc requires repairing. So the online support page suggests I erase the disc and reinstall then back up from time machine ( I have a recent backup). But when I try to erase the Macintosh HD I get the message volume erase failed with the error couldn't unmount disk.
I'd be very grateful for any help anyone can give me.

    thank you sooo much
many many thanks for your hep guys !!

Whenever you install a new version of OS X being installed, the disk is checked just as if you were using Disk Utility checks the disk to see if the disk is damaged. And,, from what you report, your disk is damaged and needs to be replaced. This isn't a fault with Mavericks - your disk may have been failing for years.
It's a very good thing that you've a recent backup as you're going to need it. I would suggest that you evaluate what functionality that you need in a new disk and go shopping at OWC for a new drive - HGST (or any Hitachi), Seagate SSHDs or Toshiba drives are all good. Be sure that you buy an enclosure for the 'new' drive so that you can format it using Disk Utility before installing it into your machine - you can get one of those from OWC as well.
Good luck - call back with any questions...

  • I moved all my Pages documents from my Macbook Pro to my present Macbook Air and then gave away my Pro.  Now, when I try to view my documents I get the message that the document is too old and I have to save it on Pages 09 first.  How do I do that? i

I moved all my Pages docs from my Macbook Pro to my new Macbook Air.  Now, when I try to view my docs I am told that they are too old and I must save them in 09 first.  How do I do that?  The version of Pages I am using on the Air is 5.2.2

No release of Pages v5 can open AppleWorks, Pages '05, Pages '06, Pages '08, or RTF documents. Sometimes, it cannot open its own documents.
You will need to do one of the following:
Borrow your MacBook Pro back until you can export all your incompatible documents to MS Word (Which Pages v5 can open)
Install your iWork '08 DVD on your new Air, and then immediately apply the following Apple Updaters. Again Export to MS document formats.
    Pages v3.0.3
    Numbers v1.0.3
    Keynote v4.0.4
Purchase iWork '09 DVD, and then immediately update with Apple iWork 9.3 updater.
Open the document(s) that Pages v5 won't permit
Save as Pages '09 v4.3 documents, or export as MS Word
Upload to Zamzar, and convert to MS Word (free for limited volume)
    No sensitive documents
Email notification within 3 - 4 minutes with MS Word document download link
After you do either item 2 or 3, run Disk Utility and verify/repair application permissions on your boot drive. Open your converted documents in Pages v5.

  • I'm getting a similar message: There was an error opening the database..." and the only option I get is a "quit" button. Help!

I'm getting a similar message: First it offers me chance to repair - but if I it repair, it crashes.  Then if I select do not repair I get the following warning: There was an error opening the database..." and the only option I get is a "quit" button. Help!

From the path in the error message you posted it appears that the library is not on your internal (root) drive.
What type of disk is the library on and how is it formatted?
The crash log Léonie is referring to is what is printed out when Aperture crashes. You wrote that Aperture crashes in your first post so if the app crashes you must have gotten a crash report.

  • Error saying "There was an error opening this document, the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is correct"

At my work we uses Macs to prepare PDF’s and the create folders to archive and print them. Other areas of work use PC’s to review these PDF. When they go to review these folders there is a small black dot which appears under random characters in the folder name and when they try and open the file an error message saying “There was an error opening this document, the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is correct”. On the PC they can delete the name and rename the folder and the error disappears. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.  If I was to have a guess I think its most likely an error with character recognition between the MAC and PC.  Any help would be great , thank you

See if this helps on the charachters...

  • When I try to open up a PDF document, i get the following error message: "There was an error opening this document. The network path was not found" AArrgh please help as I need to open up my documents. Thanks.

When I open up a PDF Document all i get is an error message saying: "There was an error opening this document. The network path was not found" I dont know how to fix this, so looking for some advice please, as I really need o open up my documents.
    Thank for any help.

The documents I’m trying to read are already saved on my computer, under various different headings, I know that we have a server, so I only assume these documents are saved on here, as I said before I’m not good with all this techno stuff. I do my work each week ( on a payroll system) and save the documents for each company, they automatically go to the correct place. I never request for them to be saved in a certain place ( well not that I’m aware of) . I then on occasions need to open up this information, it is then that I can’t read or open the documents. We do have a tech help, but they are off sick until the 5th Jan, hence me trying to work out if I can fix this problem through this help site. Its ADOBE Reader that I’m trying to use.

  • There was an error opening the database for the library "/Users/madis13/Pictures/Nikon Transfer3/Aperture Library.aplibrary".

There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/madis13/Pictures/Nikon Transfer3/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
What to do when it comes to such a notice?
If I want to open the aperture program, followed by a message, and the only option is to quit, but the program is not avanegi

    chose import library.
    That might be the problem.
If you want to import an image file in to an Aperture Library, you use the command
         File > Import > Files
    or
File > Import > Folders as Projects.
    The command
      File > Import > Library
is for importing whole iPhoto Libraries or Aperture Libraries.  Have you tried to import the Aperture Library into itself?
However, the program did not open the catalog yet, and I did force quit.
Do you mean, after you tried to "import as library"?
Any success with the First Aid Tools as I suggested?
Hold the key combination ⌥⌘ firmly down and double click your Aperture Library. Then select a repair option from the panel.
