Aperture Crashes On Import

I've been using Aperture for around 6 months on a Mac Pro (2x 2.66) and it regularly crashes when importing images. I shoot on a Nikon D2x & D200 and import around 1500 images at at time. It sometimes helps if I split the import into smaller batches (<300) but even then I still have problems. When I say crash, I mean the whole system hangs & nothing, not even force quit works. I have to re-start the computer & when I do so, it will crash again when I try to open the project I was importing at the time.
(I've read that importing directly form a CF card can cause problems, so only import images that are in a folder on the desktop)
The only thing I can then do is to delete the project & start again (a side question on deleting the project: Why when I restart aperture does it appear again? - it only properly deletes if I re-build my entire library).

I've been using Aperture for about a year and only started having problems about a week ago. It doesn't completely crash, but the screen suddenly turns black and takes about a minute to come back up with my username and password. It will run for a few minutes, then do the same thing again. I realized just this evening that it will do it even when I'm not importing. It's really frustrating.
