Aperture crashing, and crashing, and crashing
Can anyone perhaps give me some suggestions to continue troubleshooting this? Aperture crashes for me quite frequently. I first noticed it happening occasionally on images where I had made some adjustments and then wanted to go back and adjust the crop. At this point I thought it might be something between Edge Sharpen and the Crop tool because I could disable the Edge Sharpen, adjust the Crop, and then re-apply Edge Sharpen and everything was fine.
However, I've recently done some images with some more complex adjustments. For example, I have one with several spot/patches along with most of the other available adjustments. It crashes Aperture just about every time I click on it to even view it (while it's still "Loading" and before the adjustments become available). It seems that the more adjustments I have applied, the more likely it is to crash Aperture.
The crash log looks the same every time. Thread 0 crashed. It looks like something in the video driver to me. However I couldn't find any discussion threads where anyone else is having a similar issue. I saw several references to rebuilding the library and deleting the plist. I've done those along with repairing permissions, clearing caches (system, user, font, etc.). I've exported /imported the project under a new blank user and had the same issue.
I'm not sure where to go next. Could it be a corrupt video driver? If so, how do I go about replacing that? What else can I look at?

I did some playing around yesterday. I did a fresh install of OSX on an external drive, did all the updates and then installed Aperture and let it update. I was playing around just fine using the sample images. I did one with a CRAZY amount of adjustments. It was very slow but kept right on chugging. I thought I had the problem licked. I booted back to my production install and exported one of my projects. I went back to the fresh install and imported. Then I continued to play with mine - especially the one or two that were giving me the most issues. Still stable. I thought, "OK, time to do a complete rebuild." As I continued to put it through its paces and stress it out, I started to setup my Aperture window like I usually have it. When I did, BLAM it bombed - same look to the crash log. I opened it back up and played around a bit more. Here's what it comes down to: If the image in the viewer part of the window is above a certain size, it's likely to crash. Below that size, no crashes. Of course this makes a difference in whether the image is oriented in landscape or portrait (since the viewer is normally wider than it is tall). I have the 30" display so that lets me get the viewer pretty large.
I was able to boot back into my production install and repeat the findings. I set the viewer to be square (which ends up reducing the image size of landscape images) but keeps all images displayed a similar size. No crashes.
I don't want to accept that as a solution though because it still points to a hardware issue. Perhaps a bad VRAM chip in the video board? I haven't gotten around to opening the case to reseat the board - will do that maybe this evening.
Does anyone know of a utility to test the ATI video board (even if I have to boot into DOS or Windows)?

Every time since I upgraded this morning, attempting to open Aperture causes a crash. I upgraded to Aperture 3.4 this morning, and now it will not open at all! It crashes every time, and tries rebuilding the library and repairing most times. The Library open fine in Iphoto

My newest iMac from a year ago is getting very sluggish. I notice it particularly in Aperture. I get the whirling dervish thing going on an operation sometimes for many seconds, even a minute or more and once it just crashed and I had to restart with the button. So I'm wondering if there is some way to "clean up the system" that is built into the iMac or if there is a reliable app I can obtain that will clean things up. I'm supposed to have a super fast processor in this version of iMac and lots of hard drive space and RAM. What gives? Any suggestions?

Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.

About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later

FCPX is not loading titles and generators and crashes when loading projects that have them already
Hello,
I am currently trying to add titles and generators (and themese too) to a new project in FCPX. However when I click on either the titles or generators tab nothing appears in the select area. However, when selecting transitions, music, effects and all the other tabs they show their respective items fine. I have already deleted my preferences plist which did not do anything, as well as restarted my computer.
Also, if I try to load a project that has titles in it, FCPX crashes. I have attached a few screenshots of what I am experiencing:

What my statement above indicates is that FCPX is not a replacement for video professionals.
Apple definitely has alienated the video professionals with this release of Final Cut Pro. And, if not addressed within the next 12 months probably it will be a good bye to the video professional community.
The application may be a success, but with a new audience. Not with the core of users that made it a current success.
Apple should learn from Aperture, their software that was touted as the photography application for professionals. It is a great tool, but it lost the battle against Adobe Photoshop Lightroom in the Professional community, along ago. It did, because Apple was not listening to the professionals, and was trying to change the workflow of all these pros.
FCPX indeed is a new way to see post, but Apple is not the mighty enterprise to make a whole industry change. Video/Film Editing is older than Apple, and Apple is not the only company in this field providing solutions. Granted, FCP (version 7 and prior) needed some tweaks, but as applications, they are great tools. FCPX, is not there yet. And it should have been named something else. It is not the next version of FCP, is a whole new application.
I agree, calling it a Pro, is an insult.

My windows computer crashed last night and shortly thereafter, my iphone updated to IOS 7 and i was forced to do a system restore before i could preform a backup... I tried accessing my old contacts, texts, notes, pics and apps thru icloud (i have it set up to automatically preform backup). It claims that the last back up was after my computer crashed/the update/system restore... I thought all was lost, then went to redownload some old apps. They all appeared with the icloud symbol next to them (instead of "free" or a price), so i'm assuming that i DO have things backed up on icloud? Why are my apps the only media showing back up? Is there a way i can salvage my contacts, texts, pictures and other deleted media still?
Apps are not included in a backup - only a reference to which apps are on the device. They are restored from copies in the app store.
Here's a test to perform - using a computer's browser, log into icloud.com. Check the contacts and other pages where your data had been stored. If they are not there, then the only place they could be is in a backup, either to itunes or (/and) icloud. You'd have to restore the backup. If the data is there, then your device is not connected to icloud. Go to Settings>icloud to be sure it's logged into the right account.
As for pictures...
Many users have lost photos while preforming a restore from backup or upgrading the iOS. Recall, only photos in the camera roll are backed up to iCloud. There is a way to turn backups for camera roll on/off, perhaps these users had camera roll turned off.

IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream. If using Photo stream, but sure to move the received photos to a permanent album. If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as many users have discovered. I'm afraid I have no advice in this case - there is no "cure". -
Jpg causes crash of preview and mail
just noticed that some jpgs imported via fotostream make preview and mail apps crashing. jpgs were imported with aperture 3.2.1. anyone with similar problems? what can i do?
Uninstall the current drivers (software for the printer) Check the Konica website for uninstall instructions or reintsall from a disc if one came with the printer.
And delete the printer from System Preferences > Print & Scan > Print
Then restart your Mac and reinstall the drivers. -
Firefox crashing when closing and at other random times
Hi - I'm running firefox 6.0.2 on a Win7 64-bit machine that my cowowker uses. Starting a day or two ago, FF began crashing instead of starting. I can start it in Safe Mode, and I believe I've removed all the add-ons. When in safe mode I can use FF, but it still crashes occasionally, especially if I'm trying to open something in another tab or window. Also, it crashes when I click the X; at least, it shuts down and then the crash reporter pops up. Windows is updated, and I'm stumped. Hope someone can help! You can also download Rember from http://kelleycomputing.net/rember/ if you want to really test the memory. Set it up and let it run over night.

I have a brand new HP dv8t laptop that is straight from the manufacturer 2 days ago.
Last night, I attempted to download and installed the latest version of Firefox. After installing, it worked great for an hour or so (3.4 different sessions).
Then, this morning when I came back to the computer, Firefox crashes at startup and gives me the option of finding a solution online or quitting the program.
How aggravating!
I have installed this same version on 2 other computers that I own, without any issue.
I have attempted to uninstall Firefox from the dv8 and reinstalling, to no avail.
I cannot find the crash report, but I do this see this message once the app crashes:

I bought a new app ($0.99), bought $19.00 worth of on app purchases and the app crashed, now it says that I have to start a new game since i had just started it and didn't get a chance to save it, so my question is, how do i get my money back?

Premiere elements keep crashing with rendering and mid editing!
Hey
I have used adobe premiere elements 10 for a little over a month now. But recently pre began to crash then I was rendering a video!
I began searching on "Adobe premiere elements 10 rendering crash", but didn't find a answer. But, I notices that some people had the problem with render crash when the process bar reached 27%, I tried rendering two times in a row, and notices that my rendering where crashing at 31%!
I have really no clue what the problem could be!

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro: Will randomly blue-screen and Safari repeatedly crashes.
I bought my MacBook Pro in June/July of last year, and it has worked perfectly fine up to this point. However, for the past 2 months or so, my computer will randomly go to a blue screen and log me out. Also, Safari will crash several times (it had never crashed on me until the blue-screen problem started. Both of these issues surfaced at the same time). For the most part, the blue-screening problem only happens when I'm using the internet, but sometimes it will happen when I am offline as well. This is an infrequent/inconsistent problem, though. It will blue-screen and Safari will crash one week, but then it will be perfectly fine for the next three or four weeks. What's wrong/how do I fix it?

It sounds like you have been on the right track in trying to troubleshoot this issue. You may want to see if your MacBook Pro will boot directly to the Apple Hardware Test, as outlined in the following article:

I have an iphone and it is obviously registered to my itunes so i have all my apps and music on it and my sister just got the new ipod touch and wants my apps and music and so i went to register it to my itunes to sync my music and apps to it just before her birthday but itunes crashed on one of the stages (the final stage i think) of registartion and so i had to close itunes and start it up again but it didnt give me the steps to register the ipod again and now when i connect it i go onto the ipod button and it is just blank with ipod written in the middle with no autofill buttons or sync buttons or any automatic fills and i cant drag music onto it either. Is there anything i can do?
- You need to restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and start anew. Is the restore button visable in iTunes? If it is they restore the iPod.
- If it is not visible try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- If the restore button is still not visable, try placing the iPod in recovry mode. See:

plugin-container crashes and hangs many times daily all my time eaten up by upgrading too frequently to new Ffox versions, only to find that I must then spend a whole day jumping thru hoops upgrading almost all of my add-ons too.
I now find, to my horror, that the hideous virus-magnet IE 8 is needed if I want to surf at a reasonable speed and not spend all day dealing with Ffox new versions' Known Issues. Only good thing I have seen about ver. 3.6.15 is slightly better launch-times. Since 3.6 cane out, I must spend 10 minutes just waiting for Firefox to load and give me a browser screen. Help! I love you guys, but your core browser developers need to have better comms with the Javaa/flash/Adobe and other must-have add-on people! And PLEASE fix all these "plugin-container" crashes and hangs I get, that lock my machine for 10-15 min at a time. Not everybody has 16 gigs of RAM, you know! I think the "plugin-container" running as a separate process idea might need to be COMPLETELY re-engineered! YOU CAN DO IT! LET'S GET BACK TO LEAN AND MEAN, and not bloat ourselves off our hard-won User Preference / great security pedestal with the kind of feature-creep that IS DEMOLISHING IE's slave-userbase with the hard-won advanced-user preference for Firefox
and our core values. FAST-LEAN-SECURE.
Where have they gone? I LOVE Firefox

see SeaMonkey and leaner, faster
browsers hot on our heels, THIN and
FAST! Firefox doesn't need to integrate
with EVERY thru-the-browser media tool

since 1968, and I can't imagine how a
lesser-experienced user (that code
should be written for) could possibly
have navigated all the side-upgrades
and Known Issues to make Firefox run as
sweetly as it used to! He'd just give
up when he finds he has to separately
find and install the EXACT 3rd-party
version that Firefox needs for its
newest release: things like a new Java
runtime environment, and hunt down and
correctly install ALL the Flaming-Phox-
compatible buggy plugins from half the
browser-media warezmakers on the
PLANET! He'd give up halfway thru trying to navigate to, D/L, and install
what he needs from Oracle Java, Adobe,
Flash, media players and their codecs,
etc etc.... WRITE FOR THE NOOBS! As it
is, I have invested 2 full workdays in
just keeping your last 2 quick releases
happy. And having another release spaced only 3-4 days apart from the
last- well, that just doesn't fly.
Better to release a hotfix or patch that a user can set FFox to automatically D/L and self-install on
schedule. Just look! Now you've got me
talking like that lawbreaking swine

I've already used the built-in plugin checker but it gives very vague answers like (research this" and update this" all of which I did, starting with Java and Flash, Adobe Reader, Shockwave, 100% reinstall of Java newest ver. TWICE- but FFox keeps reporting that I only have the FORMER version installed, although when I go to Java console or Check the Flash executable at the MFR's site, there is NO doubt that the updates were successful!
But the browser just seems to refuse to acknowledge the update!
And I don't HAVE 6 hrs/day at the 'puter just to play with add-ons
and plugups. So I'm going down the line now, ripping out extension
programs and replacing/reinstalling/updating the plugins one by
one- even went to M$ to get advice on THEIR For-Firefox ActiveX
stuff. No dice so far. And yeah, The plugin-container WAS made so
that a plugin, add-on or I guess extension app failure wouldn't take
the whole FF browser down with it if the 3rd-party ware crashed. It's supposed to shake it off and go on, kinda like how XP sometimes
restarts Explorer (not the IE browser) so I don't have to reboot the
whole sys.
That was the foundation of my remark about stepping back and
re-engineering the whole "Plugin-container" idea, because it seems
to do more harm than good. Maybe that's why the Firefox core
engine won't recognize my upgrades- for example I TWICE installed the Flash update to 10.2.xx (latest ) and the Flash Mfr's
site verifies my upgrade as a successful 10.2, but Firefox plugins
check say I have a 10.1, the old one. What gives here? The sneaky
PLUGIN CONTAINER, METHINKS!
Now I'm disabling things on the Extensions Apps list, thinking
that might help, like disabling my video downloader and other
download helpers/managers... and I notice that there is a LOT of
Java stuff in there too as well as in the blue Lego Plugins List... and
in the past the FFox always told me if a new version of Ffox was
incompatible with any older 3rd-party app Extensions and notified
me QUICKLY if something I had in there was Outdated. I'm big on
using the neat-o "find updates" button at the bottom if that happens, and usually get a newer version right away. The prob
really lies in the Blue Lego Plugins and their new Container, I
believe.
So Ill still keep Plugin-innin' away! Will post here what success I have! (OR maybe M$ is deliberately sabotaging our ActiveX-cripple
