Aperture creates multiple duplicates of a folder/project

so strange phenomenon happened a while back with my aperture library. Some how, apt has created multiple folders of the same projects (13 identical folders). the folder is titled 'TRAVEL' and in it are 5 projects (USA, Columbia, Europe, etc). it seems like they are all the same and actually function as one (ie if i delete one image from one of the folders, it will be deleted from all the rest. if i delete the folder itself, all 13 folders with the projects will be deleted.
I've tried several fixes to no avail. recently i've exported each project to my desktop as a library. deleted each project one by one in the main library, then deleted the containing folder. i then imported the projects back into the library, but they come in as 13 folders, each containing that project.
i really need some help with this. if anyone has an idea...

Hooo,
It definitely sounds like there is some corruption in your library. Have you tried the [Basic troubleshooting|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805]?

  • Aperture keeps multiple duplicate images in the library file which do not show up in the app

So, I recently had to merge two libraries which have some common images.  Although upon import Aperture asked me if I wanted to "Add or Merge" the libraries (I selected "merge", which wouldn't import duplicates), I wanted to confirm there were no duplicates in fact brought in.  I ran Duplicate Annihilator, which made a strange claim (about most photos, in fact): it showed a file as a duplicate which had no copies that I could find - searching for it by name revealed exactly one image.
Curious, I searched inside the actual photo library.  Imagine my surprise when I found the following files
    ...Library/Masters/2007/Aug 10, 2007/IMG_0002/IMG_0002.JPG
    ...Library/Masters/2007/Aug 10, 2007/IMG_0002 (1)/IMG_0002.JPG
    ...Library/Masters/2007/Aug 10, 2007/IMG_0002/IMG_0002.JPG
which are in fact *exactly* the same image.  Meanwhile, to reiterate, Aperture shows only ONE photo:
    IMG_0002.JPG
Shocked, I investigated further.  In fact almost every single file which was in common between both libraries was "imported but not displayed", which explains why my two libraries of sizes 50GB + 50GB after merger = 100GB when, the two libraries in terms of images had 10k + 12k after merger = 14k images.
Aperture imported all the photos into the new library.  But it just opted not to use half of them.
So, now I have a bloated-by-2x library, and of course the frustration with Aperture having made such an insane, bone-headed move.  Those files are essentially dead weight which will follow the library around for all eternity.
    1) Why?
    2) How to fix?
    thanks!

I would take  a step back here before going further.  William's suggestion might very well clean up the library but something obviously did not go right and to start mucking about in the library might make things worst.
For starters I'm surprised to see the folder structure you showed in your first post. Aperture stores managed masters (originals) by import date and time. The structure (in all libraries I've ever seen) looks like:
So something seems wrong with your master folder.
Also the three folders you showed the first and third are identical ( the middle one has the (1) added to which is how the OS handles duplicates in a folder) so this shouldn't even be possible, those folders should not be there.
I'm wondering if this is something left over from your using Duplicate Annihlator. Do you have a copy of the library before you ran the merge and used DA on it? Would be interested to see what the master folder looks like.
Finally when you ran the merge which library did you tell Aperture to use as the master, the one that was used to resolve conflicts?
Again William's suggestion might be all you need to do but it would be good to figure out want went wrong before proceeding.
    regards

  • Aperture creating blank Duplicates?

    G'Day
I just returned home from a bird shoot in florida. While there, I downloaded all 4300 images into a aperture project on my laptop. Last night I exported that project from my laptop to a external HD, then imported the same project on to my desktop.
Now when I view the project it appears that aperture has created several dozen blank grayed out duplicate files. When I view them in the browser as thumbnails all I see is a dotted outline of a file but no thumbnail? When I click on one of these grayed out images and try to go full screen, I just see a large gray screen; however the version number of this gray image is the exact same as the previous file which shows up fine. Well almost, the aspect shifts slightly?
The last inconsistency I noticed is when I view the thumbs in list view, I notice that the aspect ratio has changed for these files. The files that seem to be effected show an aspect ratio of 100:151, then the next file shows an aspect ratio of 2:3 or 3:2, and lastly all the effected files seem to be missing the key wording I gave them.
All images were shot with either a D3 or D300 if that helps at all.
    Thanks for the help.
    Shane

To me this really sounds like Aperture having for some reason trouble to display either the raw or the jpeg. As you have confirmed by delving into the package, Aperture has imported both the raw and the jpeg. Every raw converter, and your camera which created the jpeg from the raw counts as one as well, will convert raw data slightly differently, leading to a slightly different pixel count and aspect ratio.
Can you figure out whether the image you see is the raw image and the grey duplicate the jpeg, or vice versa? If you go to list view, you should be able to see the filename and the file size.
What you try, is to export the masters for some of the problematic images and then reimport them into a new (test-)project.

  • Webapp (requires payment) creating multiple/duplicate products

Each time someone submits a new Webapp that requires payment, a new Ecommerce product is created.  Is there a way to have the Webapp use the same product?  I also have an online shop, and it's making the product management overwhelming.

I have tested all sorts workarounds for this problem. My situation was that we had a single payment webform set up and we were using this same form to accept payment for multiple events (the web form HTML code was inserted into the event detail and used to submit the event booking).
    Here's what was happening:
    A product was automatically created by Business Catalyst. Product code is the WebFormID of the webform used to submit the order. Product name is a concatenation of {web form name}/{event name}
An order was created in the CRM referencing the new product.
BC will create a new product when an order is placed unless the combination of Product Code + Product Name already exists. This is patently stupid since the Product Code is the primary key here. In fact, BC even warns you that this is bad as soon as you view the product page in admin.
I searched everywhere I could think of to find a way to tell the web form which product to use when creating the order. No joy. There does not seem to be a way to override the automatic creation algorithm. I posted a question about this in the forum here and never got a response.
As Shannon points out, these ARE real products as far as the database, OneSaas etc are concerned. We use OneSaas to synchronise to Saasu and this synchronisation process repeatedly failed due to missing product codes in Saasu (which is the product master by the way).
So, the only solution I could find was to duplicate our payment WebForm so that there is a unique and distinct form for every event our customers could purchase. I then modified each event so that it used the corresponding WebFormID of it's dedicated WebForm in the action URL query parameters. I didn't need to modify anything else in the event (since every webform is exactly the same - the HTML is identical. Hooray for code re-use ... NOT!).
In Saasu, I then create an Item to represent each event booking using the WebFormID as the Item code. There's no need to run around and create the products on BC. It will create diabolical looking product names using the WebFormID and if you create these manually you NEED to make sure that the name you enter is EXACTLY as BC will create it ... or you'll get a duplicate product ... again.
OneSaas now works correctly as we have it set up to pull in products from Saasu. It can pick up the new orders and relate these to Saasu products/items and then sync the invoices to Saasu.
    Problems With This Approach
Your WebForm code is duplicated across multiple events. If you want to, say, change the payment methods that you accept you'll need to change each and every webform as well as modify the HTML code in the event.
You get a unique product for every event that you offer. This may not be what you want (my client didn't). At least it will synchronise.
You MUST remember to create products in Saasu any time you offer a new event. At least you can use a sensible Item name in Saaus (rather than the auto-created BC garbage) as matching is only done on the code.
If you have an external process that extracts Items from Saasu so that you can create matching products in BC you'll need to be careful not to overwrite the product names for your webform related products. Or you'll get a duplicate product created on the next order.
If anyone has a better approach I'd be happy to hear it.

  • Using Aperture with photos in default Photo Folder in OS X (Newbie)

    Hey guys...
I'm a new Aperture user (1 day) and fairly new to Mac's (5 months). I have a MB Pro with newest OS. Since getting the MBook I've been placing/storing all my photos in /Users/"lastname"/Pictures and then giving each photo "event" a new folder. I first started using iPhoto as an organizer and was not happy with using it. I had used Picasa on my windows machine and it took a few weeks to realize that there was a Mac version for Picasa. It was probably my own fault, but I couldn't figure out how to point iPhoto to my Photos Folder/Directory (maybe its old Windows habits)??? Because of this I installed Picasa and enjoy the easy croping/red eye/face recognition.
HOWEVER!, I wanted to move on to a real photo editor and got Aperture. Now to my question,,,lol
If I "import" all my photos that are currently in a folder/directory order, will Aperture create a duplicate library? And if so, do I bite-the-bullet and use Aperture as my one and only photo organizer, verse my old school ways of organizing photo folders on the hard drive and then going to the folders view via Finder to get a photo??
While writing this I referred to my photo Folder and noticed a iPhoto "library" ...when I click on it, it opens iPhoto and I see photos that I imported these few days I used iPhoto before Picasa. I guess maybe it means I need to get in habit of using the "library" when I want to search out photo for something (emailing, uploading to FB, etc)
    What should I do? Tips?
    Thanks guys!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
and don’t understand why Aperture don’t keep my folders in sync. So if I delete / add a photo to a folder, it does not update the folder in Aperture, as what you would get in Picasa.
Well the very obvious point is that it's not Picasa and doesn't work like that. Picasa is an attempt to use two databases (the Finder and Picasa) to manage the photos. Aperture simply uses one - the Aperture database. If that's not what you want then don't use it.
If I keep with Picasa, what’s the real benefit of using Aperture?
If you cannot see the opportunities that the Aperture offers for organising, and managing your Photos - including most obviously the tight integration with the OS, so that your photos are in every Open... dialogue on your Mac - and if you cannot see the far, far greater opportunities for post processing your Photos offered in Aperture compared to Picasa, then there is no benefit for you.
If, on the other hand, instead of trying to shoehorn Aperture into your Picasa workflow, you take a few moments to learn how to use it - say by looking at the Aperture tutorials on the Apple site - I think you'll find it's a much more powerful and capable application than your current choice.

  • How can I create multiple versions of a video within the same project?

OK...this is a probably a very basic question but I'm not sure how to word it clearly.
How can I create multiple versions of a video within the same project? What I mean is that I have a bout 50 minutes of video and I want to make two DVDs using different clips from this original 50 minutes of footage. It would be a real pain to have to re-import the video AGAIN for the second DVD. I suppose I could drop anything I don't want to burn to DVD back into the clips pane but that would wipe out all my transitions wouldn't it? I want to save each project in their “raw” form so I can burn additional DVDs later otherwise I would just do them one at a time and not care about one of them being destroyed.
Wow...that was a mess. Does anyone understand what the heck I’m asking? I hope so.

How can I create multiple versions of a video within the same project?
You can't. You make separate projects using the same or different clips, segments, transitions, titles, etc. You can even duplicate the first project and then modify/make the desired changes in the duplicated project. Each project can then be burned as a different DVD or as different titles on the same DVD if there is enough room.

  • Aperture 3 why can't i drag projects into folder

Hi. Im using aperture 3.4.3 and I  can't i drag projects into folder. Why is this? Help!

Projects can only go into folders that are not under other projects. So for example
    Library
         folder
              project
    is OK
    but
    Library
         project
              folder
                   project
Is not OK (the last project won;t go)
So if you create a folder at the top level can you drag a project into it?

  • How to create multiple folder levels of connections

Is it possible to create multiple levels of folders in the Connections tab. For example, I have 3 projects and each projects have dev, qa, prod. The documentations that come with sqlDeveloper2.1 only tells how to create 1 level of folder.
Please share your suggestion if any.
    Thanks.

I also tried this through the config file ~/.sqldeveloper/system2.1.0.63.73/o.sqldeveloper.11.1.1.63.73/product-preferences.xml.
Seems to me that nesting additional list elements for subfolders does not work.

  • Add Folder to library taking a long time and creating multiple copies

I have been a longtime WMP user and am ready to convert to iTunes. I am trying to "add folder to library", which causes a request to convert the files I already have (approx 5,000 songs).
It has been running for more than two days, day and night, working on this. I am not kidding!
I discovered that it has been creating multiple copies of the songs. It looks like it has restarted a few times, perhaps each time it restarts a new copy is made and placed in the iTunes folder.
Should it take this long? What can I do to resolve the speed issue and to eliminate all the duplicate files?
    Please help.
    Thanks
    -medicnick

Theoretically, "Add Folder to Library" goes thru the folder and all its subfolders, and adds each song that it finds that is not already in the library. Optionally, it will make a copy of each song and deposit it in the iTunes Music Folder according to Album and Artist.
Personally, I have never seen it behave any different. But it is often reported on this forum that on large adds (and at 5000 yours is large) it does not behave properly.
Since your iTunes library is new, and does not yet contain those precious play counts, why not just delete it and re-add the songs in small batches. You may wish to deselect the "Copy Files to iTunes Folder When Adding to Library" option in Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General.

  • When syncing multiple Google calendars to iPad, switching event to different calendar on iPad creates a duplicate in Google. Ideas?

When syncing multiple Google calendars to iPad, switching event to different Google sub-calendar using iPad creates a duplicate in Google.
Using Google account with the Exchange setup on an iPad mini. iOS up to date. I have a secondary calendar in my Google account for some appointments, and when I create the event on the iPad and it defaults to my main Google calendar, changing the event to the secondary calendar caused the following:
    1) at first, the event totally disappeared from my iPad. Scary! Reappeared when I went into Gcal on the web, opened the event to edit, and re-saved. Phew.
    2) Failing to re-create error #1, I switched a new event from primary to secondary calendar, and it then appears correct on iPad, but is duplicated on the web. The duplicate remains even after deleting the changed event on iPad, refreshing Gcal, etc.
Just curious if anyone else is having this problem or has discovered a workaround or fix.

When you open the Calendar app, tap the button at the top-left corner (Calendars).  That should reveal all the calendars you have available, and you can select/ un-select any or all of them.
If you don't see your 2nd GMail calendar listed, go into Settings/ Mail/ (account name) and make sure you've turned the calendar ON for this account.

  • I want to use The Duplicate Finder to get rid of duplicates in iphoto. I created a library as a folder on my desktop.  Should I trash the photos in iphoto before I run the duplicate finder?

I want to use The Duplicate Finder to get rid of duplicates in iphoto. I created a library as a folder on my desktop and droped it into Dupe Finder.  Many dupes were found.  Before I have it auto select dupes, should I trash the photos in iphoto?  Or will Dupe Finder do that for me automatically?

1 - if you want to remove duplicates from your iPhoto library you would not be using a copy of it
2 - don't do anything without a good, current backup
3 - reading the Duplicate Finder web site does not tell me tha tit is safe to use on the iPhoto library - i suggest you use one of the known good and tested duplicate eliminations programs - see this discussion for links - https://discussions.apple.com/message/24363132#24363132
4 - One cardinal rule - NEVER make any chnages to the structrure or content of the iPhoto library using any porogram (including the finder) other than iPhoto - the programs listed in the linked discussion use iPhoto to do the deleting

  • Creating Multiple iPhoto ibraries on the same hard disk/same folder

Is this possible? Since iPhoto does not support multiple events inside an event, is there a way to create multiple libraries on smae disk and in the same picture folder? I want to separate some pictures into several libraries, but I want them to be on the same external HDD and in the same folder - how do I do this? How do I create another/separate library? Thanks!

Easy. Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Choose 'Create library'. IF you're going to have them in the same folder be sure to give them distinctive names.
Since iPhoto does not support multiple events inside an event, is there a way to create multiple libraries on smae disk and in the same picture folder?
It's just curiosity, but how does this a: make up for the fact that you cannot nest Events? and b: Won't Albums (and folders of Albums) create the same in a single library - especially as you can only have one library open at a time?

  • Massive Aperture cleanup of duplicates and renaming of files...

    Hi,
I have been wanting to clean up a massive (tens of thousands) cleanup of duplicates for quite some time, and work out a more sustainable workflow and filehandling.
The combination of several small tools seems to give me what I want, and by using:
    1. Aperture to export masters with XMP sidecars
    2. Mr. Clean (http://www.arcobaleno2001.it/), to clean out duplicate files
    3. EXIFRenamer to rename files to createiondate_creationtime.ext
    4. DateTree (http://www.orange-carb.org/DateTree/) to place files in a hierarchical structure based on creation date
...leaves me only to figure out how to bring along the XMP sidecar files and have them renamed together with the image files and I would love any input on that.
Obviously, any work done in Aperture in terms of manual sorting/grouping will be lost, but I am willing to make that sacrifice in order to avoid a manual cleanup. Anyone with a similar type of job under the belt - willing to share the experience?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

    Broken Links
It depends a bit on why things aren't where iTunes expects to find them but if they are in sensible Artist & Album folders in some common location then my FindTracks script should be able to reconnect them to iTunes. FindTracks uses some fuzzy matching routines and searches for multiple potential locations within a media folder. For more details see this thread.
    Duplicates
Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)
I intend at some point to improve DeDuper so that when there are multiple duplicates, where at least one is connected to a file while others are missing, it can throw away the entries to any missing files, however the current version needs all duplicates to have been repaired first.
