Aperture Crop Features vs Lightroom

I have been running the Aperture trial and I like the look of version 3 and its nice integration with Mac and other significant features.
But, I really like the crop guide overlays in Lightroom (there are about 4 of them). Are there plug-ins that would offer the same overlays in Aperture?
Also, I can't seem to control the brightness in the part of the image that is outside of the cropped area when working on the crop. Is there any way to do this in Aperture?
These seem like small things but for me critical in the creative process. Any ideas/info on this?

The Lightroom overlays are nice. Go to Lr (if you have it), go to crop mode ("r"), and then cycle through the overlays by pressing "o".
Afaik, this is not available in Ap3. Recommend via "Aperture>>Provide Aperture Feedback".

  • Aperture Library to Adobe Lightroom?

    Hello,
Does anyone know of a way, or have any ideas, of how to share my Aperture library with Adobe Lightroom? I like both programs for different reasons and was curious if there was a way to at the very least export my Aperture Library in a way that I can import it in Lightroom? I eventually want to move both of these to an external hard drive as well..
    Thanks!

Well, I just tried this... with one file. What I discovered, makes sense. The original file is not 'syched' because the original is not modified with non-destructive editing. All of the "edits" to the original files seem to reside within the programs, and not with the files. I wouldn't know where to look for this edit data in Lightroom, but I'm pretty sure that in Aperture the edit instructions being stored in the Aperture Library, even if the file is refrenced. This would be an interesting piece of code for someone to work on..... i.e. make a change in Aperture, and Lightroom reads that change from the Aperture library, and vice a versa.
Not sure that anyone would really want to do this on a long term basis as I sincerely doubt that there is something that on program can do that the other can't. (Except that Lightroom does not make books or have a Lighttable). If for instance you created a bunch of great edits in Lightroom and wanted to used those edits in an Aperture book, you would, at this time, have to export the edited versions and import them into Aperture - at least that seems to me to be the current requirements.

  • Raw images from 1GX are rendering soft in Aperture - crystal clear on Lightroom

I have just upgraded to a Canon 1Gx MK II as my point & shoot.  RAW images are rendering terribly soft in Aperture - crystal clear in Lightroom.  Any ideas?

Have you in-camera settings applied, when you take your RAW photos? Aperture will ignore any of the in-camera settings when developing the RAW.
Have a look at Keith Barkley's User Tip. See this link:
The Big Three: Setting your camera for the best Aperture RAW results
Also, you may want to check the RAW Fine Tuning settings in the Adjustments panel. Perhaps these setting have been changed from the default values.

  • Crop tool of Lightroom in CS5?

    Hi,
are there any changes to the crop tool in new PS CS5, that enable a simliar cropping than the cool crop tool in Lightroom?
    Thanks

The only difference between the CS4 and CS5 Crop tools is that in CS5 you can display a rule of thirds or a grid overlay.

  • Crop Feature Not Available

The crop feature is no longer available when I open a pdf. My IT guy was working on the computer and I noticed that this change has ocurred at that time. Am I on an older version? What might the problem be?

Perhaps you used to have Adobe Acrobat ($$) and now have Adobe Reader only (free). If so your IT guy might have removed hundreds of dollars worth of software and you should ask him for it back.

  • Add custom crop groups to lightroom 5

In the crop dropdown in Lightroom. There are a couple groups of crop presets. Is there a way to permantly add a group of custom presets? Using the enter custom option only allows you to add so many before replacing previously added custom ones. I want to know if I can add a permanent set just like adding user presets for editing.

This is not currently possible. Your only customization available is the MRU List of the last 5 Custom Crops.

  • Printing from Aperture, and printing from Lightroom.

    Hello,
I have noticed when I print from Aperture using my Canon i9950 and a custom paper Colorsync profile, and if I then print from Adobe's Lightroom using the same Colorsync profile and paper, the print from Lightroom is much sharper. The Aperture print is exact in every respect except it is noticeably softer.
Anyone else notice this? And if so is this a recognised problem that may be fixed in 1.1?
    Kind regards,

Hi Charles, I totally agree with you. Lightroom's printing features are really excellent. In comparison Aperture almost seems like the printing of photographs was something the Aperture dev team bolted on at the last minute.
I sincerely hope Apple sort out, what for me is inexcusable in a professional commercial app. A few photographers I know are going to use the next release of Aperture as a turning point, if it can't print as good as the Beta Lightroom then they will become Lightroom users and say good bye to Aperture.
Apertures sorting and logging tools really are second to none, but if the print quality is poor, what is the point. I know for a large number of photographers, producing prints is not high on their list of needs, especially if they are supplying prints for publication or the web. But if I want to do what my old fashioned enlarger can do, which is create great prints, then hey I am not going to get it with Aperture.
I know Apple can fix this, I just hope they do.
    Anil.

  • Aperture 2.0 vs Lightroom in respect to raw image adjustment stability

I just downloaded lightroom(demo) in order to compare the stability to Aperture 2.0. It seems that lightroom is highly stable when adjusting images, whereas Aperture wigs out allot when adjusting images. As mentioned in recent post Aperture 2.0 preview wigs out when adjusting images, especially when using the layer or highlights and shadows adjustments. Like everyone is saying they either get a black preview or Unsupported Image Format preview, after adjusting the raw file. This does not happen all the time, but very frequently and too frequently!!
I really like the many features of Aperture, but if it remains too unstable for much longer I'll have to go elsewhere. I hope the Aperture team has been comparing the stability of their product to Lightroom when making image adjustments. This has been an issue forever.

Like everyone is saying they either get a black preview or Unsupported Image Format preview, after adjusting the raw file.
Everyone? Guess I'm not everyone because I'm not seeing this problem at all. And the sluggishness of the 1x versions has all but disappeared with this new update. As culcheth said you might want to define +wigging out+...
For that matter, I never had +stability problems+ during adjustments with 1.5 either - slowness yes, but nothing unstable. I'm using a Nikon D80: what's your camera model? what's your machine specs?
As mentioned in recent post Aperture 2.0 preview wigs out when adjusting images, especially when using the layer or highlights and shadows adjustments.
    What's the "layer" adjustment?
We'd love to help, but we need a little more info to determine what your problem is in the first place.

  • Aperture usage/feature request/ minor gripe (sorry!)/ question...

    Hi all
Quick post to say I've been using aperture for all my photography for a good while probably the MOST annoying thing that I find as a heavy user (I do photojournalism stuff my last job for example yielded 1500 images) is the lack of a progress bar... I never thought I;d hear myself say this but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it so that I can tell how much more before an import/thumb/previews is due! so that's my request
Not sure if anyone else is using vault however for backing up here's my homebrew solution. I used the vault feature only to discover I can't do all the jolly things (like printing etc) of course having not backed up my images when I deleted the vault they were gone too.... (just a test shoot but nonetheless....)! Perhaps others have more joyous stories to tell about vault however if you're not happy maybe this'll help. I have an external drive which I use solely for backup the minute I bring a job in the images go in a folder called (project name)RAWbackup and then into aperture (effectively saving twice although you can reverse the order -aperture first and export next- I wouldn't reccomend it as you can mistakenly reduce the quality -by choosing to export > versions instead of masters). I found that as the months progressed my MackBook drive became clogged up which forced me to edit out a few images to start with and then more more... which means I now have a very good historical set which I can show and be assured the originals are backed up.
minor gripe predictive form text... defaults alphabetically in ascending order need to be in descending order to assist workflow. I presume other users use numbers/dates in IPTC i.e. I usually copyright in the following format --© (date) George Bitsanis-- which means all my image inputs default to 2004 (earliest image date I've imported) tedious really if it were descending it would default to 2009 and save the hassle.... also a way to control of be able to filter predictive texting i'e coming up with most used term first
and I'll finish off with a question ... is there a way to organize my projects other than alphabetically?
    any comments would be great!
    cheers
    George

If you go to the "Window -> Show Activity" menu item, it will open up a floating, well, activity window. Is this not what you are looking for, in terms of a progress bar? (FYI, you can also open up the window by just clicking just to the right of the "red-eye" tool; there is an "invisible" button there that opens and closes the Activity window.
As for backups and vaulting, I just have two external 1 TB drives, that I alternate. Haven't run into any problems doing that.

  • Why is the crop tool in Lightroom 5 so sluggish on my otherwise very fast machine?

I'm running a Macbook Pro Retina, new from this time last year.  It's got 16gb RAM, a 768gb SSD (with about 150gb free space), and 2.8GHz processor.  Everything else is lightening fast on my system.  Lightroom is fine otherwise, but the crop tool is almost unusably slow.  When I tap "R", it sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load into crop mode, and another 5-10 seconds to load out of it.
Additionally, it will show the incorrect preview in crop for the first few seconds, so if I go back to re-crop something, it will act as if I am adjusting the cropped version rather than the original, so if I exit too quickly, it comes back wrong.
I've tried what other users recommended - using both full screen and not, updated to the latest version, restarted multiple times with no solution.  Please help!

I was amazed at the amount of info you put into that post. Thanks for that effort.
I made sure Onyx was up-to-date and ran all the schemes you listed. That did nothing. However, reading further in your support thread gave me some ideas. I started looking into third party extensions and plugins. I recalled installing Silverlight a few days ago, for what reason I have no idea, since I trust Microsoft only marginally more than I trust Google. Which is to say, I don't trust either of them at all. So I threw that plugin into the trash.
I should have checked the performance right there, but I didn't. Right under Silverlight, you mentioned Flash. I decided to check the prefs on it, and found that it was set to allow sites to save info to my computer, and Camera/Mic and Playback were changed from "Block" to "Ask Me". I distinctly remember setting those for maximum privacy. I reset them, cleared all the files, and exited the prefs.
I just checked them again, and everything is changed back to allow Flash to have its way. Looks like I'll be uninstalling that now...
I also installed Acrobat recently, just to have an alternative to Preview. Sea Monkey opened an alert box just now, telling me to watch out for the Acrobat plugins, as they've been known to cause problems. Gotta love Adobe.
Back to the topic at hand, I think it was the Silverlight plugin that caused the slowdown. All my browsers are running at full speed now after I threw that plugin out. (Now if I could just get Safari to allow me to back up a page without re-rendering it every time...)
Thanks very much for the help.

  • Adobe Bridge / Aperture organization feature only comparison

I am curious what others' thoughts are about comparing Adobe Bridge / Version Cue to Aperture's pre-editing organizational features (meaning the ability to organize prior to doing any RAW conversion and editing). What do people see as the most important features that Aperture adds above and beyond Bridge?
Remember, these are pre-editing features only, which is basically organization. Do not include editing and/or finishing options in comments. If anyone is interested why I am asking this, Its for two reasons:
    1) I'm considering a new workflow option of using Bridge and ACR, and only importing into Aperture after all conversions are complete. This basically eliminates Aperture functionality for the initial image evaluation phase, and importing only converted PSDs. Yes, that eliminates a huge part of the value Aperture offers, but perhaps it saves the ability to use it.
    2) I want to know other than aesthetics what I am really losing by not just using Bridge/Version Cue exclusively over Aperture (up to now, I use Bridge, but not Version Cue). I already have my own thoughts on this, but I'd like to tap others' knowledge and advice.
    Brad

Frankly I think you'd be throwing out all of the good parts of aperture.
I really, really like the way it imports from cards. I really like the auto-stacking, the side-by-side compare, the easy ratings (Bridge is just as good for rating) and it's fast for this - I love how it displays a preview on the second monitor.
Really, if Aperture didn't have the library, and were just an organizational/evaluation tool, I think I would be in love with it - it falls apart at the editing and archiving phases.

  • Using the crop tool in Lightroom 5 I can only move and crop my photos from the top. Am I doing something wrong?

I am new to Lightroom 5 and find I cannot crop my photos as easily as I did in iPhoto. I would like to be able to drag them if I choose a custom size or crop them from the bottom as well as from the top but my two sided arrow disappears when I work at the bottom of the photo. Am I doing something wrong?

I would suggest you trash the prefs.
    Quit Lightroom
Launch Finder and find the user Library by clicking the Go menu whilst holding down the Optn (alt) key (n.b. the library is hidden until you press the optn key) and inside the Library folder select the preferences folder. Then trash the following file:
    com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist
    Then re-launch Lightroom
It’s then worth clearing each cache. Go to the top menu bar:
Lightroom >> Preferences >> File Handling (tab)
Click the Purge Cache button under Camera Raw Cache Settings; then click the Purge Cache button under Video Cache Settings. Finally click OK.
