Aperture dodge /burn brush very slow
I have a 15" late 2011 MBP with 16GB Ram, SSD, high res screen and when I try to use dodge / burn on photos from either my Canon 7D or 5D MKII sometimes the adjustment brush takes 5 seconds to process the brush marks. I am using aperture 3.2.2 raw 3.9 , lion 10.7.2 with all the updates.
I can process the exact same files from Lightroom or photoshop without any slowness whatsoever. I have tried everything under the sun that i can think of, repair permissions, trying files from different drives etc and I get the same result every time its crazy slow. Some of the brushes work faster than others but every one of them have delays. I have tried it on different photos from different cameras but all with the same result.
any ideas? I have run out
I just tried all of those things, even ran all 3 of the repairs and no difference
I even created a new libary and tried totally different pictures and had the same results
if anyone has any other suggestions I am open to hearing them

Aperture 3.1.3 Very slow importing raw files
Aperture 3.1.3 Very slow importing raw files please help
Pro Photographer. I have a Mac Pro Quad core 1 yr old with 12GB Ram. I import via 2 Firewire 800 card readers - A Lexar & a UDMR Reader.Only using them singly. System has 4 1TB hard drives 1. Applications, 2. Aperture Library, 3. Aperture Vault, 4 Time Machine
On a photo shoot, first CF card may download and complete in less than a minute but the next card with a similar number of images may take 10 minutes.
Sometimes if I swap card readers, this can speed up download but then everything slowly grinds to a halt.
I have closed down all other programmes, switched off Faces and Enable Gestures - switched off Look up places.
Situation driving me nuts as we shoot and view images with customers immediately after the session and download time effecting the amount of time we have to do this. Nothing seems logical as such a high spec machine should theoretically fly through this.Have you upgraded your OS ans all your Apps to the latest Versions and also rebooted the system?
Turn on the Activity Viewer (Windows ->Show Activity) while importing, to see how Aperture is spending its time.
Also launch some tools from the Application -> Utilities folder:
launch the Console window, to check for diagnostics /error messages
launch the Activity Viewer, to see how much RAM and CPU time Aperture and other processes are using.
How much space is free on your system drive? And on the drive you are importing to?
If you find in the Activity Viewer, that Aperture is slow, but de facto using not much CPU time, then the problem may be a corrupted Aperture Library or corrupted preference files.
Try to import into a new, empty Aperture library and see if the problem persists.
If you have no problems with a new Library, try the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Start with repairing permissions and repairing the library.
If none of the measures outlined there, or you need further help, please report back.

Aperture 3.5 running Very Slow
Good Evening
Aperture is now running very slow and get the spinning wheel alot, even worse whe trying to open NIK add ons, didn't get this before the upgrade, anyone else experiancing this ? also unable to import an old aperture Libary into 3.5, i get the message that it was created with an older version !
CheersSame problem.
Library access is very slow.
I have restored my library after crash and now i have 250.000 previews to recreate (very big library : 2To but no problem before aperture 3.5) it's very long, about 20.000 previews by day. -
Dodge/burn brushes don't seem to do anything
Hi all,
I'm sure I'm doing (or not doing) something wrong. When pull up the dodge or burn brushes, I get the "brush" (two concentric circles with a "+" sign in the center, right?), and I drag the brush over portions of my photo (I sometimes hold down the trackpad, too), but no matter what I try, nothing actually seems to change on the photo.
I'm an old film photographer, and I used to dodge and burn all the time in the darkroom, and I'd love to have this ability in Aperture. Surely I'm just doing something stupid. I've fiddled with the "strength" and other sliders, but I'm just not seeing any effects.
Any ideas? Thank you!Frank and Kirby's tips for checking the effect of the brushes are spot on. You should also check the Brush Range on the Brush HUD to make sure you're affecting ALL (if you're brushing over highlights and the range is set to shadows, you obviously won't see anything happening).
Here's a tip you can use once everything's working: don't forget Curves, especially for burning (which I find a little soft for my taste). You can create a Curve that boosts or drops much more precisely than the Dodge and Burn brushes. And Aperture 3's ability to create more than one instance of an adjustment means you can have as many Curves as you like, each targeting a specific zone in your image. This makes for much more powerful dodging and burning IMHO.
And for edges, applying the Vignette and then erasing some portions of it is also quite effective, depending on the effect you're looking to achieve. -
Qosmio G20 CD/DVD burning is very slow at 4x max
i have used philips CDs and DVDs but they are slow, the DVDs burn but the CDs don't. should i use a different brand of disks like TDK. i cannot increase the recording speed either.
Is my MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ-845S DAMAGED, do i need to replace it? i have looked on the internet and many people have the same problem with the same drive.Hi
Wait you can burn DVDs but its not possible to burn the CDs?
Ok it sounds like an hardware malfunction but before you will replace the device you should try to burn different CD. Test the CDs form different manufacturers.
You have suggested using TDK?
I use the TDK CD and DVD and my drive burns everything successfully.
Anyway, if you still be not able to burn CDs I assume the lens cannot calibrates and therefore the drive cannot write on the CD.
In such case the drive must be replaced ;( -

• Capture RAW+JPEG and tell Aperture to use the camera JPEGs for Previews.

Aperture 2.1.4 crashes when I use Dodge & Burn
I can open Dodge & Burn to edit, but as soon as I pick an option and apply the brush to the image, it "thinks" & then closes unexpectidely. I've tried troubleshooting, but I'm not sure I'm looking in the right place/doing the right things. Any help out there? I've copied my crash report:

So:
• How much RAM on board? RAM is cheap. 8 GB should be considered a minimum for aggressive Aperture usage. My 2011 17" i7 MBP with SSD and 8 GB RAM would page out with an Aperture + Photoshop workflow until I increased the RAM.
• Hard drives slow as they fill and get flaky when overfilled so make sure all hard drives are less than an arbitrary ~70% full.
• Also look to possible slow connectivity issues (usually USB, which is way over-rated; or network issues of some kind).
• Older, weaker hardware will slow operation which may facilitate anomolies.

Aperture 3 is very slow!!
When working with aperture 3 it is very very slow,
Don Carlo,
Got it. If your Library successfully converted and completely reprocessed, then you are half way there.
Assuming that you have a copy of AP2 backed up somewhere, and a copy of your AP3 library backed up as well. I would try something like this:
-- First of all, try the "Safe Boot/Regular Boot" cycle. That may be all you need. After this, start Aperture and if it wants to process anything - let it. Click on the display and see if it hangs anywhere. Many of the problems reported come from corrupted images - often a large TIFF with spot and patch repairs or retouches. Remove (export or delete) offending images until you can fix them and bring them back. Assuming you still have your master, at worst you are going to lose your adjustments and AP3 has more an better tools.)
If this hasn't helped:
-- Rename one of your AP3 Libraries to something like Test, or "Gawd-I-Hope -This-Works!."
-- Delete Aperture 2 and 3 from your working system. You may want to try something like Appzapper to make sure your have removed all vestiges. You can try running the Bergsma Bash to see if any of the cache/prefs files are still around. Trash them if they are.
-- Run software update to be sure you have everything. It has been suggested that you may get better results running the "Combo" update directly from the Apple site, that way there is no chance of any element being left out.
-- Your software being at the latest level of Snow Leopard, install Aperture 3.0 and update to the latest version.
At this point, start AP3 and point it at your test Library. It may or may not want to reprocess all of your images. If it does - let it. Watch to display to identify any possible problems.
All of this done, and assuming an Intel machine, 4GB of RAM, and at least 30% free space on your Library disk, AP3 should be screamingly fast. Many of us have found real benefits from a one-time defrag. (I use iDefrag in the "Quick" mode.)
If this works, the put your test Libary where you want it, named what you want. Delete the extra copy of the Library and BACK EVERYTHING UP!
Bottom line: on even a minimal Intel machine, AP3 is much, much faster than AP2, and that includes a Library with thousands of 100+ MB TIFF files, using brush edits.
Hope this is helpful, -
Photoshop CS6 - Very Slow Brush Speeds...
Hi:
I thought CS5 was bad, but brushing with CS6 all brush strokes are very, very slow. If I make a brush stoke I have literally have to put my hand on my chin and wait for the brush to catch up. I cannot work like this. Any suggestions on what to do to speed up the brushes? Forget about adding anything else to Photoshop, please work on speeding up exisiting functions.

Aperture Library Very Slow Copy to LaCie Thunderbolt Drive
Just installed new LaCie Thunderbolt drive and copying various media files to it. Music and video files copied like a rocket. My Aperture folder is copying as slow as molasses. Right now it says 2 days to copy 211GB. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry, I misread Mtn Ed's last note. My USB2 was stalling out at 2-3 MB per second. Quite a bit slower than the stated Thunderbolt rate to say the least. There is a portion of the Aperture Library that copies at a very slow speed, but after an hour or so it kicks back up to normal file transfer rates. Finder was originally estimating over 20 hours for the copy to complete. Now the total elapsed time will be about 3 hours for 350GB.

Very slow Aperture on MacBook Pro 2.16 Duo
Hi All,
This is most likely a topic that has been covered before but Ive looked and cant find the answer. Ive got a 1.5 yr old MacBook Pro 2.16 intel duo with 2GB RAM (its maximum )
I bought Aperture 2 a few months ago, and its now started to run very, very very slow. I store my referenced files on a Lacie Drive (USB 2), however the issue seems to be that when I start browsing, exporting, editing and generally moving around the program, it gets to a point when the beach ball is on spinning overload. My Mac's fan is wizzing round like mad, It sounds like the things going to take off! Im really starting to lose faith and seriously looking at lightroom, but I love the structure on aperture. I have taken my Laptop to a mac store and even they have had a look over it, and cant understand why it runs slow. Its really disappointing that if its a hardware issue I cant do anything about it, plus I easily surpass the min specs to run it. Its holding up my workflow and costing me money in delivering files to clients!
Any help what so ever would be great,
Cheers Guys
MattI'm running the same model Duo with a 120GB drive and an external LaCie. It does not support the 800 Firewire, just the 400.
Aperture runs adequately fast, although after two months I'm still learning a lot about the features. The search HUD seems a bit slow, but I do have alot of pictures.
My Aperture Library is 14GB, 13,000 files, 90% are jpegs. All picture files are referenced and take up an additional 17GB.
I found Aperture (and Parallels) choking whenever the free space on my internal drive gets down below 6-8GB. Some non-Apple forums recommend keeping at least 10GB free for working with media intensive apps like Aperture. I also find that even when I quit Aperture, it doesn't free up the temp space on the disk drive it had used. Restarting regularly recovers the 1.5GB or so that Aperture was leaving behind after quitting.
I'm slowing breaking the big project I had with 11,000 files into several smaller projects and migrating the referenced files to an external LaCie. File management, renaming files, finding duplicates, etc., is not an Aperture strong point, (Expression Media is better at file and metadata management, but has limited editing and integration features with iLife, etc.) but over all I'm satisfied with performance on the Core Duo with an external monitor attached.
Cheers,
Flack -
Healing brush/Clone stamp tool and others very slow processing
Healing brush/Clone stamp tool and others very slow processing. Process bar comes up and is painfully slow to complete the task. I don’t understand why does Photoshop not use all the resources available/allocated? No other programs are running at the time, I have tried all the suggestions on this forum and all over the Google. My brand new system is: Intel I7 4770K overclocked to 4.3GHz, 8GB 1600 RAM, Samsung PRO 120GB SSD system drive, 100GB scratch disk. The photos I usually work on don’t exceed 20MB in size. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for the answer.
I have not mentioned the GPU because the processes I described (as far as I know) are not supposed to be using GPU resources. So far I have not been able to afford the GPU i want which is GTX770, so I use Intel 4600 built in graphics instead. To be honest I find, that 4600 graphics is quite powerful. I am able to play Mass Effect 3 on Full spec on max res without game slowing down. And Windows 7 64bit index score is 7.8 for the 4600 graphics. Overall index score is 7.8 on my PC righ now.
I'll try to get the Photoshop system info as soon as possible.
Thanks again.

Has anyone come across this issue when the MAC just freezes up or runs very slow when aperture in use? its like the things is running on solar energy an its night time! can someone help please? any quick fixes? i run a MAC OSX version 10.7.2, 3.06Ghz core 2 duo, 2GB 800mHz DDR2 SDRAM
Any insights appreciated
MWith only 900 MB that doesn't surprise me.
You need to seriously look into either deleting or moving a bunch files.
OmniDiskSweeper will point out the files and folders that are taking up the largest amounts of disk space.
Running with such a small amount of free space has greatly increased the cahnces that your hard drive is corrupt. So after you free up space, you really should boot from another device and repair the disk with Disk Utility.

Aperture suddenly becomes very slow opening library
Hi.
I've got only 100 or so photos, and Aperture suddenly becomes very slow, it take a couple of minutes now to open the library.
Just before this started to happen, I got a very short massage, saying something like, "It's repairing some files."
I wonder if there are some corrupt files there, causing very slow opening the program.
Is there any way to check this and fix this problem?
I'm using 3.4.3, and OS 10.8.3.
I appreciate your help.
HiroI'm surprised nobody has responded to this yet. Hopefully you have already figured it out, but if you double click on the aperture library while holding down the option and command keys, Aperture will bring up a dialog that gives you three options for dealing with potential library issues: repair permissions, repair the library or rebuild the library. You should try them in that order, and it is a good idea to back up your library first (especially before rebuilding the library).
Hope this helps. -
Aperture Brushes still slow on maxed out imac i7 will it ever change
Why are brushes still slow to No Go. I have an imac 3.4 i7 with 32G ram and 2g video card but still brushes are a major issue and can't be used in any professional manner because of the time involved in waiting and waiting.
Does anyone know what's going on and if it will ever be addressed by apple?
thanksskye27,
there must be a reason for the slowness in your setup.
As long as we do not know more about your versions, the location of the Aperture library, the location of any referenced files, the image file format of your original master images, it is hard to suggest anything.
Slowness can be caused ack of space on your drive, a corruption of your Aperture library, by network access, etc.
Check, if you are having the same problem when using a new Aperture library or working from a different user account.
This will narrow down the problem a bit for easier trouble shooting.
