Aperture exported image side by side with CS2 Posted

Here are side by side 100% shots of an image from Aperture and Photoshop CS2.
Shot with Canon 1Ds Mark II.
The crappy one on the right is Aperture.
Look at the fur in the jacket, the fringing on the headphone cord, the jacket itself, etc.

Seriously, I do love Aperture except for the image quality (which is everything.) Is this something that can be fixed with a 10.4.4 upgrade?
G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Ok - sorry.
D2h and D2x conversions with the current version of Nikon Capture (4.3.1 I think? can't remember) - Nikon's noise reduction is horriffic - it uses a smearing technique.
Color is usually pretty good from NC, I don't like the way it sharpens though.
(I'll confess to bias here, Nikon Capture is something I passionately despise primarily because it is such poorly coded/designed software. I may not be giving it a fair shake on the conversion side. I stand by the terrible noise reduction statement though.)

  • Export images from library module with borders

Lightroom has been a great help for organizing my images and preparing them for photo competitions, but it would be a lot more convenient if I had an option to add a border to some of my exported images.  Many competition judges demote images that have black content on the edges unless we add narrow (2 or 3 pixel) borders to the images.  You already do this for slideshow mode; the same feature in Library export would really be appreciated.  As it is, I have to export tiff files, then use a Photoshop action to prepare the bordered competition jpegs.

You can create a border in photo shop. You need to create it with a transparent background.  Add it to the picture in the print mode as a watermark.  Check the watermarking options and you will be able to create a preset. Choose your border in image options.  Your border file can also have text etc.
You could also use photo-Edit in- to go to photoshop. Edit a copy.  Ctrl J - a new layer.  Add a layer style - Stroke - choose position "inside" and exactly how many pixels you want.  Hope that is descriptive enough. sounds like you probably know more about photoshop than I do.  I'm not familiar with a photoshop action
    Good luck

  • Aperture exported images disable Photoshop CS2 Variations command

    Your comments and help please:
From Aperture, I choose a file to modify in Photoshop CS2. I Export the file to Photoshop. Photoshop opens with the image exported. Unfortunately, the Variations command is grayed-out. I tried TIFF and PSD exports from Aperture. Variations, of course, works when I open the same image from the Finder. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks for your help, Nate

I'm fairly sure that the Variations adjustment doens't work with 16-bit images - when you use 'open in an external editor' Aperture passes a 16-bit file to that editor.

  • Aperture exports are not playing well with my TV display

I use a USB drive in a television to display photos.  When I export versions from Aperture 3.4.5 to the USB drive, everything looks normal on my computer, but when I put the drive in the TV, I have duplicates of every image, one of which cannot be read (eg. DSC1111 would also have a file _.DSC1111, which is unreadable.)
I have tried exporting smaller images, I have tried exporting to a file on my computer, then copying the file to the USB drive.  No matter what I do, I get that extra file, which I cannot see on my mac running 10.7.5, or on a PC, for that matter, yet they show up on the USB when it is placed in the TV.  Oh, and I've tried this with Aperture 3.4.5 on my Macbook Air which is running 10.8, and the same problem occurs.
Now, I have exported fulll sized JPEGS in the past from previous versions of Aperture in this manner, with the same TV, with no issues.  This problem appeared with the previous version of Aperture (3.4.whatever, so I upgraded to 3.4.5, but the problem persists.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on, and what I can do to solve this issue?
    Thanks!

ok - i found my solution, but why are the simplest things
    sometimes the most frustrating????
...turns out that after downloading the latest version of
flash player for the computers that had trouble displaying with IE7
    - i failed to turn off my computer and restart... once i did this
IE7 displayed my pages properly - i was mistaken thinking that all
i had to do was shut down/restart IE7 only....

  • D800 ISO noise on Aperture exported images

There has been some discussion on other boards that downsizing D800 images shot at high iso (3200-6400) to the size equivalent to 16 MP reduces the perception of noise such that the ISO performance of the D800 is similar to the D4 at same sized images.  The downsizing, as best I can tell, was done in PS.
So I am wondering if any of you early D800 owners have looked at the effect of downsizing the image during export to a JPEG in terms of ISO.  If the same improvement occurs during the export process as when it is done within PS, then that would be great since it is JPEG images I usually provide to clients or upload.
Also does anyone have metrics on import and export speeds of D800 files?

I initially felt that my 5D images were better. On the 1D3 there is a custom function II-2 that turns on high iso reduction (even in RAW). Without this on, the 1D3 is using the older DIGIC-II processing, with it on it uses the newer DIGIC-III processing. With this on I think it makes them as good or slightly better than the 5D (although with less pixels). However, Lightroom makes things look even better.
    Here's a 100% crop from a low-light photo from Aperture:

Here's the same crop from Lightroom:
    http://caslis.com/tests/483I0673-lr-crop.jpg
Of the images I tried this one image was the closest in both. In most cases Lightroom has far better. Even in this one, the Lightroom version looks better to me. Both programs had NR off and use the same RAW image.

  • Anyone know how to export images to a subfolder with the API?

Can anyone please offer any suggestions or help with this: I need API access to the "Put Images in SubFolder" checkbox in the Export dialogue box. I've tried ExporSettings object, and fw.exporHTMLAndImages() function and neither have it.
I've been coding a custom HTML template and one of the last things that I need to do is to create a custom interface for it. I need a way to export HTML and Images without using the Fireworks Export dialogue box (File > Export or Ctrl + Shift + R).
According to the Docs, fw.exportHtmlAndImages() uses the third argument to either export an image and name it if it's a single image, or export the images into a folder of that name if there are multiple images, but this does not work! Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Aperture Export Resolution...

Does anyone know how to change the export resolution in Aperture? Any versions I export are 72 DPI regardless of format (tiff, jpeg, psd), while the RAW masters export at full 300 DPI resolution.
Choose an image, and right-click on it. Select Output>Export Version. I've tried every option, and it always exports at 72 DPI. I know this because I open the exported image in Preview or Photoshop CS2, and the information on the file is that it is 72 DPI.
I've checked in the preferences, but can't find any way of changing this. It seems rediculous that Apple would put out Pro software for Photographers that would only export files at web res.
Anyone know how to change this?
    20" iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Okay, so there are thrid party apps to do it, and I
greatly appreciate you explaining them, but is there
no way to set Aperture to export at 300 dpi for
everything except web and e-mail outputs?
I guess what I'm getting at is that Aperture is
supposed to be the ultimate workflow solution,
eliminating all other applications except Photoshop.
Surely there must be way to set Aperture to export
    at 300 dpi.
The thing is that DPI really means nothing independent of resolution - it is only a kind of hint to other programs as to what the size may be, but does not by itslef really control print size or anything else. Just a default size in some applications. Even though I have given a workaround for setting DPI I really don't use it myself as I simply export and then use the images in other programs, like InDesign, or send them off for printing.
Aperture currently simply ignores these values, passing them on from the original RAW file. So right now it has no way to alter DPI as it does not know what it is for any file. Aperture does not care, it does not need to as it scales images up or down as required by the task at hand.
I agree that Aperture should have some way to select a DPI for export, or possibly let you edit the metadata value for the resolution in a version (along with lots of other metadata). But I also think it really doesn't matter that much, as all that really matters in the end is how many pixels there are in the image you are outputting. That is something Aperture does let you control (though not quite as well for upsampling as I would like).
Does this make sense, or am I not understanding
    something here?
No, you are understanding the current limitations perfectly. What is it you need the DPI set specifically for?

  • Why are most of my keywords not included when I export images?

Why are most of my keywords not included when I export images?
Since starting with Lightroom 1, I've entered keywords into either of the two fields between "keyword tags" and "keyword suggestions" in the keywording panel.  I was unaware that some keywords are more equal than others, or that Lightroom offered (or has added?) hierarchy support.
I recently stumbled into the news (to me) that Lightroom tags can be organized into a hierarchy, so I exported my keywords to a text file to examine.  I hadn't unwittingly created any hierarchies, but an astounding fraction of the keywords were within square brackets.  Sure enough, if I export an image, keywords within square brackets are omitted from the output (jpeg) file.  How nice.  Since I began with Lightroom 1, I've added nearly 1600 keywords.. Too bad most of them are coded wrong... so as not to accompany output that I create.
    1.     What was I supposed to do, as a photographer beginning to use Lightroom, to enter keywords simply but reliably:  what I type is what I get? I'd expected that's what the "just type here" interface would provide.
I especially dislike obtaining erratic results:  most keywords are in square brackets, but a few are not.  Of course, when I use a simplified interface, I should expect not to have access to some of the options or features.  However, I shouldn't inadvertently trigger undocumented behavior.
    2.     Does the Adobe reference help system say how to enter keywords simply and reliably, in its documentation of the keywording panel? I don't find my answer under the Keywords topic, within Home / Using Photoshop Lightroom 3 / Organizing photos in the catalog.
(I NOW realize that the instructions for the "Create/Edit keyword tags" dialog mention exporting. However, that's not the method I was using.)
    Dick Rawson

I'm afraid that I distracted you with my background mention of hierarcharial keywords; I'm not asking about them.
I've entered keywords for several years of using Lightroom.  Suddenly, this week, I find that most (yet not all) of them have the attribute of "don't include the keyword in an exported file's metadata."  I never intended to ask for that; I thought all keywords will stay with the file and its offspring, and that's what I wanted.
    So I'm asking:
    1.     What did I do "wrong" to induce Lightroom to give the keywords that attribute? I never intended to ask it to.
    2.     Where does Adobe document how to enter keywords reliably so that they stay with the file on output?  I can't find that Adobe does.
    > Can you be more clear about keywords in square brackets? I know when you export the keywords as a list you can get a normalized data file that uses punctuation and tabs as delimiters...
I did export the keywords into such a list:  most keywords in the plain-text list have square brackets surrounding them, indicating keywords that will be omitted from metadata of any image that Lightroom exports.
My concern is not that the brackets are there.  They encode the attribute of "don't include the keyword in an exported file's metadata," and recognizing that attribute concerns me.
    > ...but I've never seen keywords in image files or in the interface rendered so.
    I haven't, either.

  • Aperture export to Photoshop error

    Hi all,
This is a bit of a very specialised issue that I noticed - so only an issue for the very high end user. But big enough of a problem that I have to change to Lightroom until this issue is fixed...
Following Problem statement. I get an error in calcutions in advanced Alpha Channel Masking... see attached images to understand the problem
Here is what I do to get the Alpha Mask:
    1) From Aperture export Image to Photoshop
    2) You want to calculate a certain coloured area to do some very subtle editing - say a skin rash
    3) You select Green Channel for highest contrast between rash and skin
    4) You go in Calculations and on merged layers in inverted mode you do a multiply calculation into a new selection
    5) You get a selection. You want to refine it
    6) You do calculations again and this time on the selection layers (not inverted) you do an overlay calculations into a new channel
You see that the Mask has square patches - misaligned information ...
I don't understand what they are because when you look in RGB there is no error.
Also note that this must be related to Aperture - because when I import the .NEF file directly from the camera into Photoshop or via Lightroom I don't get this issue.
    (I am using a NIKON D700)
Second more minor but annoying issue - skin colours are way more yellowish than in Lightroom ...
Can anyone fix this or point to how it can be fixed? Should Apple be notified?

I also wanted to add an image of how the masks looks like - i.e. without issues - when you import into Photoshop via Lightroom

  • Print or export runtime created vector graphics with alpha values intact

I want to be able to save the dynamically generated state of a swf as a vector image. I know I can right click on the swf and print to a pdf via the Adobe pdf print driver. This works well but all alpha values are lost. Does anyone know how to print to a pdf or any other vector format and retain the alpha values? The pdf format clearly supports it as I can save objects with alpha values from Illustrator as a pdf no problem.
Any alternative solution that achives this result would be welcome e.g. save runtime swf via actionscript to swf or Illustrator format etc.
    thanks

  • Trouble Exporting Images from Lightroom 3

I am having trouble exporting images from Lightroom 3 with my User Presets. Error Message: The file could not be written. (1). It has always worked in the past but I just bought a new Mac and had everything transfered to it. Everything else seems to be workin fine. Any solutions?

Sometimes on new computers, the permissions in certain folders are not set up to allow you (the only user) to write files. It's worth a check.

  • How do I compare adjusted image side-by-side with un-adjusted version?

Sorry if this seems very basic. I tried A3 Help and I did a quick search in this forum. In Lighthouse, there is a simple button, very intuitively designed to generate a side-by-side comparison showing how the adjustment would look.

Create a new Version, select in the Browser the two images you want to compare, and double-click one of them to entire Viewer or Split view.
There are many relevant settings, views, and workflows -- what these do and whether you want to use them will become apparent as you get used to Aperture.
There is a setting in prefs to create a new Version for all adjustments.
"m" toggles Master image view on/off for all currently displayed images. In the Viewer, this can be helpful, but it does not show you a simultaneous side-by-side view.
The most important thing to know about Versions is that they come with almost no computer overhead -- use as many you want, as often as you want (to, for instance, compare adjustment sets).
Sorry if this seems very basic.
No apology necessary. Aperture can be quite alien to the new user. Ask away (but thanks for checking the Help file -- and the forum -- first).

Yes, you can create such a card.  This example is the folded Holiday Colors theme.  Just choose the layout for the inside that includes a full page photo on top and text on the bottom.
