Aperture for those of us still shooting film ?

I'm interested to know if and how those of us still shooting film are using Aperture — I by no means want to start a Film vs. Digital debate, I just want to know without the benefits of the metatag and RAW file support, is Aperture really all that much of an improvement over previous methods? It seems from everything that I have read so far, it is much more oriented towards the digital folk. I myself have only recently started using iPhoto for headache relief in general photo organization and its integration with Apple's other iApplications — I still find the Photoshop Browser to be my primary tool for previewing my photos and deciding which ones merit more time for improvement, and edit them non-destructively in layer adustments.
Interested in some points of view. . .

I'm now digital but I did want to get a lot of previous family photos in. I scanned both the prints (usually at 800dpi), 35mm negs (at 4800dpi) and some 120 (at 3200dpi). Big file sizes and using Photoshop or iPhoto to figure out which to keep and which to process (was the print a better start point than the neg? question)was too convoluted ....I needed to pair up images from print and neg and group images from the same time. Aperture filled that function for me very nicely. Once I'd been into PS CS2 I had 2 versions of really big (>200mb) files. So then I did my selects and exported those. Moved my aperture db to an external drive and after starting up aperture as it created a new, empty library, I reimported my selects.
Although no EXIF data, you have munchos keyword and metadata to go at ... which I'm doing now.
Next task will be to select those I want to downrez, and then reexport these for batch process in CS2.
You need a decent scanner as cleaning up dust and blemishes on hundreds and thousands of photos is not for the faint of heart. I have a Canon 9950 with their FARE processing. I love the scanner and the scanner sw, but it doesn't sound close to the Digital ICE scanners in removing dust and scratches.
Bottom line. Yes, I've found it a useful tool for this.

  • For those of you still having Personal Web Sharing problems

With Personal Web Sharing, Leopard doesn't seem to bring the config files for individual user accounts over from the apache1 directory to the apache2 directory which is why sometimes when you visit http://localhost/~username you get a 403 error message.
The solution is to Go To Folder, /etc, find the httpd -> users folder and copy all the files in there (should be one for each user account) into apache2 -> users and restart Personal Web Sharing.
If you're still having problems, one of the issues is with Filevault. If you have Filevault turned on, Personal Web Sharing will still probably give you an error for your user account, but the system wide web server will be fine.

Tried this but still does not work. Also from another computer I cannot access the user web share or the default one (locally I can access the default) without getting a 403. It just searches and searches. It recognises that there is a system there but not able to read anything. My firewall is off by the was so is Filevault.
    Thanks

  • Any good workflow tutorials out there for those moving from iPhoto Aperture

Any good workflow tutorials out there for those moving from iPhoto to Aperture 3?
Especially those that deal with using a laptop and off-line storage of photos.
    Cheers, Andrew.

There is no reason to not port a number from another provider (unless leaving a contract early and being charged the ETF) for if one does decide to switch back to their previous provider within the first 30 days after making the switch, the previous provider will take one back with welcome arms and the same phone number can be used this way.
Your way required getting a new phone number which can't be changed or potted after the fact for single line account.

  • Aperture for Professionals???

I have a few disputes thus far regarding Aperture from a professional point. One, a lot of professionals are shooting with Medium Format Digital Backs, typically either Leaf or Phase, and it doesn't show support for these cameras. Not only that, they don't even support the Canon EOS 1DS MKII which has almost become an industry standard professional DSLR. How do they expect to get into the professional market without supporting any of these camera's?
Second, why doesn't apple have a demo version available? I'm not going to spend $500.00 on a program that I'm not sure is going to work or not. Almost all major programs offer Demo versions to professionals.
As far as I can see, with Aperture supporting primarily POINT AND SHOOT digital camera's marketed for consumers, this program was NOT designed for professionals.
If you Apple wants to market this to the Pro Photo Industry, they had better get their act together and ask the Pro's!!!

    Hi Dustin:
It's easy to be confused, you're not an idiot and someone at Apple simply didn't do the best job trying to point out that Aperture supports additional cameras beyond the "built in" support of high end digial SLRs.
    Here's the story:
Aperture itself supports a group of Pro cameras and their RAW formats
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/raw/
This includes the FF top of the line Canon camera you were concerned about.
Additionally Mac OS X 10.4.3 supports a list of camera formats and some RAW files.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/cameras.html
This means Aperture supports those as well via the OS. So someone at Apple rushed out an updated "list" that merely rehashed the OS camera support.
And you'll see the above list is basically the same as the list you found as their "updated" list.
    http://www.apple.com/r/store/raw/
Unfortunately, it's not really an "updated list" but an "additional supported cameras list, since it's the list of cameras and RAW formats supported directly in the OS itself. I presume they "tossed" this up on the site to respond to complaints that they didn't support enough cameras and no non-SLR units. But they do, via the OS.
It's confusing and they should have simply pointed this out as directly supported and supported via the OS.
    Oh well.

  • For those with battery drain / wifi issues

Many of you have found a temp fix related to exchange email accounts, this is not for you and I'm glad you have found something that seems to be working.
For those of you with battery oddities, something new to try...
See what security protocol your wireless router is using...is it WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.
If you are using WEP, try changing to WPA/WPA2 and re-associate your iPhone with your wireless network.
IMPORTANT: Changing this setting on your router will disconnect all of your wireless network devices so only try this if you've tried everything else to this point and your phone is still acting up.
I've spent more hours troubleshooting over the last couple weeks than I care to admit. I noticed that both my routers at the office and at home were still configured using WEP protocol (older/insecure standard). I reconfigured my office network this morning with WPA and updated the configuration on my phone.
Well....................since doing this my 3GS is acting normal again (normal standby drain, not warm, wifi status bar icon not staying on constantly, etc.). So far NOTHING else has worked for me - restore as new, toggling various settings on/off, evaluating certain apps, reset settings/warnings on phone and in iTunes.
I'm curious to know if it makes a difference for any of you as this issue is certainly 'outside' of the phone itself but would make sense as some incremental firmware releases in the past have caused issues when connecting to different wireless networks.
Please report back if you try and after you've had a fair amount of time to evaluate. May just be another shot in the dark but so far it's peaked my curiosity.
    Nathan

Thanks once again for your post nateinva. Ultimately it was your suggestion that got me going on the right track, but I had one additional variable...
So, after reading your post I did switch my router to WPA2 (which also necessitated reconfiguring all of my wireless devices) and then once again began testing my phone battery life. Alas, it was the same. It would drain inordinately at home on wifi, but otherwise was normal. Next I read something about router firmware, and indeed mine was a bit outdated, so I updated that to the latest version. Voila, now my battery performs as I would hope. I have several mail accounts, an exchange account and a bunch of other stuff going on. I do have push notification turned off. I now lose about 1% per hour which I find totally acceptable.
Many thanks for the helpful post.

  • Some contacts have disappeared from my phone contacts. They are still in the phone because if someone calls me their name appears and if i search in text for contacts they are still there - but if i search in phone contacts they are not there, Help

Some contacts have disappeared from my phone. Not all just random ones. They are still in the phone because if someone (who has disappeared from my phone contacts calls me their name appears and if i search in text messages for contacts they are still there - but if i search in phone contacts they are not there, Help!

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

Both my iPhoto, Aperture and OX is update still having problem asking me to update my iPhoto.

Make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) if you don't already have a currnet backup of the library and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Aperture for imac g5?

I have a imac g5. it came with a GeForce FX 5200 installed. This card can not be used with Aperture. Can i get a upgraded card installed for this computer? If so does it have to be an apple install?
    thanks

I am bewildered that apple would release a product
that can not be used on so many of it's machines.
My guess is that Apple made the decision to look forward with Aperture, and designed the app from the ground up to optimize for the future states of the underlying OS and Apple hardware. A temporary inconvenience for those of us with legacy hardware - and a serious hit on initial sales - but IMO that approach will pay dividends when we are all on boxes with fast GPUs accessing substantial amounts of RAM.
I have used Cumulus, Portfolio, iView, PS File Browser, Adobe Bridge, etc. All suffer major limitations, many of which do seem to be throughput-power related. Aperture seems to address many of those limitations, and if Aperture succeeds in the long run at being what it claims to be, I for one will happily tolerate the fact that my current desktop tower is not adequate.
Computers used for pro graphics always have needed routine replacement, and recent improvements in DSLR capability (my Nikon D2x can create twenty large RAW + JPEG image files in 4 seconds, all of which must be managed) has exacerbated that issue. Aperture is just exemplary of the trend.
Note that boxes limited to 2-2.5 GB RAM (or even those limited to 4 GB RAM), including all iMacs, are poor choices for future use on graphics apps anyway. Even though such boxes work adequately at the moment, the graphics throughput of future OS versions and future graphics apps (e.g. Photoshop already can utilize 4 GB RAM) will very much be most cost effective using fast GPUs and substantial RAM; certainly much more than 2 GB. IMO.

  • Photos app vs Aperture, for adepts?

    Hi guys,
Are all Aperture adjustment tools available to a semi-adept like myself who migrates to the Photos app? Can I adjust my images in Photos to the same level of precision and have as many options (and stay within the Apple universe), or do I have to look elsewhere, like Lightroom? I need high-end software.
I'm offered a Beta version, but not sure whether it's for me. BTW, I have just installed Yosemite and am keeping my fingers crossed.
    Thanks,
    Raphael

    Hi Raphael,
With the _coming_ demise of Aperture, users are either:
    - staying with Aperture for a bit: it works well; migrating the database is, _at best_, tricky, incomplete, and inefficient; Aperture will continue to work well under Yosemite for as long as you have a Mac running Yosemite, or
    - using another program/programs for the digital asset management and digital camera image editing that they used to do in Aperture.
Those who are moving are either:
    - putting only or mostly new/recent digital camera files into another program(s), and developing a workflow with the other program(s), or
    - porting all of their Originals, all of their adjusted Versions, and as much of the database as possible into another program.
The other programs that are most often mentioned as being useful to Aperture users are:
    - Adobe's Lightroom.  Functional overlap with Aperture is nearly 100%.  Widely used.  More support and resources than you can use.  Aperture users general don't like being constrained by a modal interface, and don't like the actual interface.
    - Capture One Pro.  Functions similar to Aperture.  Well-liked by those who use it.  Strong editing tools.  Less strong digital asset management tools.  Very much smaller installed user base.  Imho, a more Aperture-like experience than LR.
    - Apple Photos for OS X.  Properly understood as the successor program to iPhoto (it is _not_ a successor to Aperture).  The design emphasis is on ease of use.  Adequate editing tools.  Strong but non-customizable digital asset management tools.
All three feature non-destructive workflows (your digital camera files are never over-written).  All of them — like Aperture — store _the information needed to create new files_, rather than new files themselves.

If I am to switch, I would like to switch to a software that is elegantly thought out, that offers at least as much control as Aperture does, and that is widely supported and understood; and that has a forum like this one with competent people responding.
    An excellent list.  Imho:
    - LR is the least elegant of the three.
    - LR and C1Pro offer as much editing control as Aperture.  Neither offers as much digital asset management options/utility.
    - All are (or will be) well supported.  LR is much more used and discussed, and has many more supporting materials available, than any of the others.
    - This forum provided — not just my opinion, and something I'm proud of — a rare combination of quick response, high-quality content, and little chaff.  There are (afaik) good forums for both LR and for C1Pro.

  • For those contemplating purchasing an Iphone4

In an attempt to help all those who are contemplating purchasing an Iphone4, and reading all the information increasingly available about both it's good and it's bad qualities, I will attempt a short, but honest and hopefully helpful comment. One opinion, one fact.
    1) Opinion: Aside from the antenna issue, and for those who are having the second most common issue, the proximity sensor not working properly issue, the Iphone4 is a beautiful, elegant, state of the art smart phone device. It's display is as good as any, and better than most. Video and pictures are excellent, even in low light. It feels sold, even though both sides are glass. It is thin, and feels very good in the hand. It works nearly flawlessly surfing the web, emailing, messages, and the rest, despite the fact that it still lacks many basic feature that other much lessor priced smart phones have, such as saving and emailing any attachment. In short, it is really an amazing device that most everyone would be extremely happy with using everyday, and in most every way.
    2) Fact: The Ihone4 has a basic electrical hardware design flaw in that all the antennas are on the outside rim of the phone, and thus in contact with the human body regardless of how it is held. When an antenna is touched by the human body the body interacts with the antenna's capability to act as an antenna which is tuned to a particular frequency of desire. This is true of any and all radiated electronic signals, regardless of their frequency, although frequency among many other variables will play a role in how this interference of the human body affects the functionallity of the receiver. Although many things can be done in software to alleviate this issue to some degree, the issue is basic and fundamentally hardware related, and can only be properly fixed in hardware.
Making the issue worse, is the fact that different antennas are along the outside edge which allows them to effectively be shorted together by the human hand. This is why the bottom left corner is the spot that affects the signal quality the most. Shorting two differently tuned antennas together (even through an high impedance), will negatively affect both antennas, although possibly one more so than the other.
As the issues root cause is fundamental, so is it's fix. All antennas must be isolated from direct (or even very close) contact with the human body. All other cell phones on the market have some sort of isolation between their antennas and the human body. Even with isolation, the human body will still have some affect if it is in close proximity to the antenna. So, all phones do have this issue, but none to the extreme of the Iphone4.
Many people have this issue, many do not, others have it only sometimes, others only when a certain person holds the phone, and so forth. All these symptoms are in line with such an human body interference root cause. The human body will have a different affect on a signal that is different to start with, and even will act differently at different times of the day, or night. The only valid test for this issue is testing in a chamber, such as the one that Consumer Reports used, that isolates all the variables to include only those one wishes to study. No real conclusion can be made without such scientific testing.
The question on everyone's mind is - can/will Apple fix this, how, and when? I will not answer the last two, but as to if it can be fixed, the answer is yes - but with qualifications. You cannot, some comments saying otherwise notwithstanding, fix the hardware without changing the hardware. The fix must be a hardware one, so something will have to compromise. Either the look, the feel, the size, or the functionallity (technical functional specs), will have to change to "fix" this issue 100%. Note that with 100% it is meant that it works at least as well as the 3GS, preferably better as Apple has said it is better, and touching or holding the phone anywhere will have little to no affect on it's signal quality or quantity.
I don't know how helpful this will be, but I believe it is important for people to know just where they stand when they are trying to determine if to purchase a product they will end up paying thousands of dollars for, and use for years to come.
The best way for people to make informed decisions is to be informed. Everybody's experiences with their Iphone4 can and are very helpful to others.
What are your experiences, good and bad, with the Iphone4?
    Omega

I have the antenna issue with mine, and until the 4.0.1 update, the proximity sensor issue. Aside from a small inconvenience dealing with the placement of my hand, it is still the best smartphone I've used. It is also the most frustrating. It's not perfect by a long shot, however just yesterday I was two stories below the street in a steel cage surrounded by 150 servers and I had a 5 bar signal; could make calls and check email. I was the only one down there who could. I'm also the only one with an iPhone 4. When it works, it's wonderful. I can't wait until it's consistently awesome.
The fixes are coming. This won't be ignored. Apple has a horrible track record of getting in front of PR nonsense as evidenced by any of the last dozen or more screw ups, but they always fix them.

I  have an MSI K9 SLI Platium 7250 w/ an AMD Athlon X2 4600+ 2.4 GHz. I have MSIDVD that originaly came with my old Motherboard MS-680E AMD Atlon XP 1700+ 1.4GHz. When I upgraded MSIDVD wouldn't work right and every time I Would insert a a DVD MSIDVD would give a wierd error. But here a hint how to bypass. As long as you have MSIDVD installed you should be able to play DVD's through Windows Media Player without any problems, thats what I was able to do. Or if you still want to use MSIDVD, you need to download a program from AMD, here are the detales, I also done this too
The Program is called "AMD Dual-Core Optimizer"
The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's
Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

What is Apple doing for those iMac owners who failed to have their Seagate HD replaced by April 12, 2013?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you purchased the iMac less than 3 years ago and it has got one of the defective hard disks, Apple will still replace it for free. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller. A Genius will check if your Mac was purchased less than 3 years ago.
If the computer is older, you will have to pay. Note that if you already have the iMac on April 12th, 2013 and before, and you knew that your iMac had a defective hard disk, you should have taken it even if the hard drive was working correctly

Not sure where you're getting this idea from but it doesn't matter how you purchase the software (Suite or standalone) the answer is still, no.
One license, one platform (Mac or Win)
Mac software works on Mac only.
Win software works on Win only.
From the End User License Agreement (EULA)
2.11 Dual Boot Platform. The Software is licensed for use on a specific operating system platform. You
must purchase a separate license for use of the Software on each operating system platform. By way of
example, if you desire to install the Software on both the Mac OS and Windows operating system platforms
on a device that runs both of those platforms (i.e., a dual boot machine), then you must first obtain two
separate licenses for the Software. This is true even if two versions of the Software, each designed for a
different operating system platform, are delivered to you on the same media.
From your repeated questions on this topic, does it mean that you have a Mac desktop and a Win laptop and you're trying the find the cheapest route to get DW and Flash Builder on both?
