Aperture FREEZES WHILE TETHERED with Nikon D90

I shoot a lot in my studio, so shooting tethered with my Nikon D90 is very useful... UNTIL Aperture freezes every 10-15 captures, so I have to FORCE QUIT it and restart. This, of course, is SUPER ANNOYING, especially when CLIENTS are watching.
Can anyone please enlighten me what's going on, and how I could alleviate the problem? I'm running the latest version of Aperture on a MacBook Pro 17" with a 2.3GHz processor and 4GB of RAM. And I'm usually not running anything other than iTunes alongside Aperture while shooting. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I finally gave up on tethered shooting with my Nikon D3 and Aperture 3. Aperture crashed every fifth shot or so and made me crazy. I tried new libraries, new cables, faster computer, etc. I submitted countless bug reports. I waited patiently for a software fix, because I never had this problem with Aperture 2.
I gave up and rolled back to Aperture 2 on my laptop (which I use only for tethered shooting). Now tethering works perfectly again; it's a software issue. I've had one crash in maybe 2000 shots with Aperture 2, and I can live with that. It's a crummy solution, but it's either that or I buy Lightroom and scrap Aperture for good.
FYI: the raw converter is different in Ap2 than Ap3. What looks good in Ap2 looks underexposed in Ap3 (almost by a stop, looking at the histograms), and the color rendering is quite different between the two. If you try this Ap2 solution out, do some testing before you do a live shoot to make sure you're happy with your results.

  • Aperture 3 tethered with Nikon D300 trouble

I've been having trouble shooting tethered with Aperture 3 and the Nikon D300. It works for a few shots then it jams with the spinning wheel until i have to force quit. Also the inspector column gets messed up with type over type. I'm assuming apple will issue an update for this but i'm not very impressed. I have been using Capture one, trial version in the meantime to get by until a fix arrives and it has been working fine. Nice fast captures and no BS. <Edited By Host>

I gave up with shooting tethered in Aperture 3. I now use Capture one 5 Pro from phase one. I use Aperture for the image adjustment because i like the built in retouch tools and the image management (although my search does not work in Aperture 3, waiting for an update). I'm not impressed with Apple software right now.
Capture one works flawless tethered, the fastest importing i've ever had and didn't take long to get used to the focus tools etc. Try the 30 day free trial and you'll see. When I'm done a shooting session, i just drag the capture folder (with the NEF files) onto a flash drive and import them into Aperture for adjustment.

  • Aperture 3 with Nikon D90 - How should raw fine tuning look like?

I try to trouble shoot my Aperture 3 (trial) installation. I have some troubles with the raw fine tuning controls and after reading the manual (again) I noticed that the fine tuning controls I get for my D90 are different from the ones displayed in the manual.
I get boost, hue boost / sharpening, edges / moire, radius, noise-reduction sliders.
In the manual there is no noise-reduction slider, just a check box for Auto Noise Compensation.
I got that control in Aperture 2, but not in Aperture 3. Now I’m wondering if something went wrong with my Aperture 3 installation. That would explain the problems I have with raw fine tuning. But before I try a complete clean install of my Mac i would like to know if I get the right raw fine tuning controls in Aperture 3.
Does anybody use Aperture 3 and a Nikon D90 and could tell me how the raw fine tuning controls he gets in Aperture 3 look like?
    Thanks.

Greetings, First be sure you have your d7100 properly set to take maximum detail NEF images.
Go to your d7100 shooting menu and choose NEF (Raw) recording > Type
    Choose N Lossless Compressed
Then go to NEF (RAW) Recording > NEF (RAW) Bit depth
    Choose 14 bits
You were given good advice that you should not mess with the raw fine tuning brick in Aperture 3.6
Your d7100 has a default RAW import preset - make sure you have somehow not changed that Apple Aperture coded
raw fine tuning preset - this could make all your images far less sharp on import. You can easily revert to the Aperture 3.6 raw import brick default for the d7100 if you have somehow changed it by error. And always be sure to use your Aperture loupe or full screen viewer when applying any adjustment bricks.
Finally be sure that you understand the differences between the Sharpen adjustment and the Edge Sharpen adjustment. Both of these are very sensitive and very different sharpening tools. I do not shoot with a d7100, but use other Nikon FX DSLR's and I have never felt that any of my NEF imports lacked either Sharpness or Edge Sharpness given the Apple Aperture default raw image digital converters for each particular Nikon body. Good luck.

  • How to deal with Nikon D90 AVI files in FCE 4

I purchased a Nikon D90 digital camera and it records clips stored in AVI format at 1280x720. When I import the video, a red line appears on the video render status line. Why does the video need to be rendered before making any changes?
Also, why when importing AVCHD video from my Sony camera, no rendering needs to be done?
Another question. With the AVI video, what is the best way to export in HD so I can post on the web?
    Thanks for any help.

as far as I know, the D90 (.. what a beast - and the price!!) records in 30fps, 1280x720 square pixel, MotionJpeg, .avi container ..
which is +a bit off+ the standards, FCE does support.. = rendering
I had the opportunity to 'play around' for some minutes with the D90.. and made some 'test'-recordings.. it is really breathtaking to use 'photography' techniqués while doing video, esp. FoD...
    but..
have you seen that movie done with the Canon 5D II?
    http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2086
it offers some more practical features, as automatic focus (=Nikon lacks that), and, even more important, the Canon allows to switch off automatic exposure (=in my tests with the D90, the pic 'pulsated' due to diff. light situaation) ...
    ==edit==
oops, Canon pulled that video.. too much bandwidth
absolutely brilliant, perfect photography, even in low light condition, ... but 'motion picture' ..

  • Lightroom 5 auto import issues with nikon d90

Hoping someone can help answer my question - I am wondering if Lightroom 5 has any issues with the auto import or tethering feature using a Nikon d90? I was using Lightroom 2 and the auto import feature has no issues with my d90. After I installed Lightroom 5 (Cloud App) and ran it for the first time, the first thing I used was the tethering feature and it worked great for 4 shots. I turned my camera off and then back on again and LR would not recognize my camera any longer for tethering. What's strange is that it will detect it for "Importing from Device" option. So, I went to plan two which was to auto import and that wasn't working at all. I am at a loss. I have a shoot coming up this weekend and need for one of these options to work. Any help is appreciated!!!

I use a D90, but I have never tried tethered shooting with it. Other users might have some suggestions for you, but looking at the list of supported cameras for tethered shooting the D90 is not "officially" supported in Lightroom. So you're probably on your own to find solutions. I know this isn't a lot of help.

  • Tethering with Nikon D600 - no camera found!!!!

This is incredibly frustrating to have a $2,000+ camera that cannot connect to Lightroom.  It really impacts the value of both Lightroom and my camera if they don't talk to each other.  Please advise when you anticipate this being fixed in an update.

    Lee Jay wrote:
Then why did you buy the camera?
Well ... considering Aperture and Capture One both support the D600 for tethering, some folks would think the world's leading graphics and imaging software developer would also have supported the D600 by now ... the idea we should be held hostage by a third party developer to base your equipment purchase decisions is just a tad ridiculous ... sometimes we are in need of upgrading equipment for more reasons than what you or Adobe may consider important ... Adobe is NOT the center of the Universe ...
Adobe should be a bit more responsive to stay current ... if they don't consider it a priority to do so, or feel it is too difficult to offer support for tethered shooting, maybe they should drop tether support all together ... it can't be that difficult to offer the support if others can get the job done ... we are not discussing a topic so complex as manned space flight to Mars ... we simply would like to transfer image data from camera to computer at the point of capture ... a task that is not as complex as some would like us to believe ...
To the OP - You can shoot tethered with Lr on Mac OS X as long as you have installed the current Digital Camera RAW compatibility updates ... then use the included Image Capture app (found in the Applications folder) and then point Lr to a watched folder for auto import (this would be the folder you select in Image Capture) ... you won't be able to trigger the camera from within Lr or adjust camera settings ... but you can get the job done this way until Adobe decides it's time to catch up.

  • Tethering with Nikon D750

I know this was asked a few weeks ago, but any news on tethering with the Nikon D750 in Lightroom?

If there was, the Lightroom Tethering Support page (which we're all free to check) would have been updated.

  • CS2 Raw File issues with Nikon D90

Just saw the post  on Nikon D90 non compatibility with CS2 raw file format. Questions are where to go from here. Running Windows XP with a AMD Athlon (tm) XP3000+ 2.16 ghz 448 mb ram. Is Cs4 or  Cs5 compatible with my system. I used a D70 for years and had no problems. What is going on here? I can probably add ram to get the 1000 mb of ram but what about the rest? Is there another alternative other than a new system?

    Caution!
Before plunking down the $$$ for CS5, look for the several threads around here where people are discovering their older AMD processors are not compatible with Photoshop CS5!
    For example:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/630771
I'm not familiar with the processors in the AMD lineup, but it's possible yours will not run Photoshop CS5 until such time as Adobe releases an update.

  • Tethering with Nikon D3100

I have LR5, and it wil not detect my Nikon D3100 when I start Tether capture, why?

The D3100 is not supported for tethering by LR:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support-lightroom-4.html
Adobe relies on the Nikon camera SDK to support tethering and Nikon does not support tethering of the D3100:

  • Tethering with NIkon D50

Nikon D50 has not been on the list of tetherable cameras, I know, but I still got it working this March. Now, after an Aperture update (currently installed version now being 2.1.3) the D50 support seems to have disappeared.
So, if there is anyone out there who enjoyed like myself in the past the unexpected benefit of D50 tethering, and have figured out how to get it back, please let us know.

  • ITunes 11.1.4.62 freezes while syncing with Outlook

    Hi,
After installing iTunes 11.1.4.62 syncing my iPod Touch (4th gen - iOS 6.1.6) with Outlook 2010 no longer works (I'm using Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate). The syncing process hangs while "preparing to sync" or while "syncing calendars". Strangely enough, uninstalling / cleaning / reinstalling iTunes makes the problem disappears... for just one Windows session. After a reboot, the problem re-appears and there's no way to sync again until I uninstall / clean / re-install.
The device is always recognized by iTunes when connected. No problem.
When the synchronization process freezes (or waits forever) I can sometimes cancel the operation. Very often, I have to kill the iTunes process.
    Any know fix ?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much for reminding me this oddity. Yes I'm running ESET NOD32, latest version. I had alreedy read this report but I checked the presence of the ESET_OPTIONS environment variable by running the SET command in a command prompt window. It was not visible. So I concluded I was not affected. Wrong guess. After reading your post I checked again by using Control Panel | System. It was there. So I deleted it and rebooted. Bingo! iTunes is now syncing correctly, even after a reboot (still using version 11.1.3.8 - version 11.1.4.62 behavior is different so I'm wondering whether it is suffering from the same problem).
    Oh good!
Apologies for the nosy question, Samoreen ... just trying to clarify what went on. Did you have to uninstall the Eset product? Or was the deletion just of the environment variable? If the latter, could you walk us through how you went about it?
(Hoping to work up some instructions for other folks running into this sort of trouble ... there seem to be a few people about with non-Mobile-related syncing issues with the new version, and with any luck this might help with a bunch of them.)

  • Freezing while screensavered with dual-monitors

If this is not the best forum for this inquiry, please excuse me and move it wherever else would be best.
My work box is an iMac v.7,1 and it normally works just peachy. However, after adding a second monitor, it's been doing a wonderful job of freezing.
The second monitor is a leftover from a lab upgrade, a 17" Hanns-G. One of my peers hooked it up for me when the mini-DVI converter arrived while I was on vacation and that is when the freezing started. It only does so when it has been left idle for a time. There has not been any sort of pattern so far. A hard reboot is required to get it going again and sometimes it will last for two weeks and other times it will only handle a day or so before I get another ping from my peers telling me that my box has again frozen.
I do not have this sort of trouble with my Windows installation via bootcamp. When I updated OS X, I thought the issue had fixed itself but it was just throwing me off with its longest run-time so far of 3.5 weeks. Console logs tell me nothing of use; last notification was of obtaining DHCP.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Google has not been much help and toobering this thing probably is not good for its health.

I started getting the problem with some update other than the OS in 10.5.5, not sure which one as I ran several, but I would suspect it was the QuickTime update. Pretty much guaranteed to get a freeze with a Quartz saver when I tried to exit it, or it tried to turn itself off when time was up. First I stopped using Quartz based screensavers, finally decided to just change the preference so savers only run on the primary monitor. Haven't had a problem since doing that.

  • ITunes 8 freezes while syncing with iPhone 3G

I am disappointed with iTunes 8 as it freezes when it is syncing with iPhone3G (2.1). I noticed that the phenomenon regularly occurs when certain music files and/or podcast files are being transferred. As a result, I cannot copy all the music/podcast files to my iPhone. This started immediately after upgrading to iTunes 8.
I wonder if this is related to Japanese OS (Windows XP, SP3) as I am aware that some other Japanese also have similar (probably identical) problems according to a discussion board on the internet.
Any suggestions and comments are welcomed.

    I have an iPhone 3g 2.1 + OS x 10.5.5 and itunes 8.0.1.
    While syncing:
The backup routine takes forever, but completes eventually.
Then it tries to sync applications, notably Texas "HoldEm" game. At this point iTunes is unresponsive.
To get everything going again, I have to quit iTunes, and restart the iPhone. Then I can try again, but it fails again at the same point.

  • Tethering with Nikon Presets?

Ok, still trying to find a way to get LR to work for me...
I have a shoot next week that I want to use tethering from my Nikon to LR.
This I am doing just fine, currently.
Now, my question... Is there a way to get one of the camera profiles and the lens profile to be automatically assigned as I shoot and LR imports?
This will get me close enough for the client to preview.

Yeah - auto-import settings include an option to assign a develop preset, I would think that'd do it, no?

  • Neo 2 Platinum freezes while booting with USB HDD attached

This system freezes when a powered-on USB HDD is connected. I realize that the system is trying to boot off the USB device and have disabled all of the USB boot options in the BIOS. However, DISABLE USB HDD is not one of them! Is their any BIOS or other fix available for the problem?
    Moe

After bios update , clear cmos with jumper onboard .
After that you must enter cmos setup and "Load optimized defaults" followed by save+exit
Sounds to me bios if looking for MBR on attached USB HDD ( didn't do this on my Neo2 with 1.C bios and external USB attached)
Set the normal boot order to
    Floppy
    Cdrom
    HDD
    Boot other devices :Disabled
(other boot order can mock things up)
Find "USB KB/Storage support" set to:Enable
    Save+Exit
Boot with USB HDD attached and enter the submenu of "Harddisk boot priority" in cmos setup and all recognized HDD's
wether they are IDE/SATA/USB shall be listed , move your OS HDD witch host bootfiles/mbr to top with PGUP key and save+exit .
