Aperture generating artifacts on prints

Apple - this is a serious problem - I will also submit a bug report.
It appears that Aperture 1.1.2 is generating artifacts on prints intermittently. One of these was so serious that I actually thought I had ink on the print roller.
Take a look at Apertureartifacts1.pdf at
http://idisk.mac.com/Margaret_Fowler-Public/?view=web
(apologies but this is 16 MB)
Another example is contained in Apertureartifacts2.pdf at the same site.
(secondary question - why does this PDF of the same image now weigh in at 19 MB ?)
Both examples leave the prints completely unusable
Full details of the problem and image adjustments are contained in the file Description.pdf and the original RAW image is DSC10841.NEF
With this problem unresolved, I cannot trust Aperture for bulk printing - every single print has to be previewed first.
Has anyone else had this problem ?

I wonder if this is related to the export artifacts people are seeing? You might check those threads and see if a workaround has been found.

  • Prints Managed By Aperture Too Dark/Red; Printer Managed Match Display

I did a Startpage.com search and found this archived discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1378192?start=0&tstart=0. It has lots of suggestions but before I tried any I did a little experiment: I told Aperture 3 to allow the printer software to manage the color.
The result: the print essentially matches my display. The Aperture-managed print is too red and dark. Go Figure...
I'm trying to understand why Aperture is botching the print job while the HP software gets it spot-on. Theoretically the Aperture color-managed prints should be better than the HP software-managed prints.
My hardware: Mac Mini and 10.8.3. HP Photosmart 8450 printer. NEC 2490WUXi2 display. I am using the stock NEC display profile because it is so darn good. My option is software calibration but nothing I have created has come close to the NEC profile. I have checked the NEC profile against various online display checkers and it looks good, so I see no reason to invest in hardware calibration. sRGB images exported from Aperture for Web use look good too.
When using Aperture 3 "Printer Managed" color management is automatically disabled. I select the proper HP paper profile. The image looks good on the display. The print looks not so good...
When using "Printer Managed" the only automatic setting that I had missed in the HP software was automatic sharpening; I'm going to disable it and see what happens. The only thing I change is the color setting from sRGB to Adobe RGB 1998. Otherwise I stick with the correct paper profile, select "Best" or "Maximum DPI" and hit print.
I would say that my test image is challenging to reproduce: skintones, light blonde hair, deep red/purple color in the clothes.
It's been a while since I printed from Photoshop CS3 but prints managed by that application look fine. I also use Nikon Capture NX2 but I don't recall using it to print. I'm going to test it later.
Any thoughts/feedback? At this point it looks like I should just stick with using the HP printer software. But the question remains: Why are the Aperture prints sub-par? Is it me or is it Aperture?

Honestly, it's probably your calibration.  Saying it "looks good" with the software profile is completely subjective.  If you don't measure the display, it's all guesswork.
Aperture can print fine, with its drivers.  You do have to ensure you're not double color correcting (i.e. Aperture AND the printer drivers, which will double down the adjustments and make things look bad), but if you have stuff set up right and colors are bad, then you really can't go to step 2 without doing a hardware calibration.

I need help.  Can LiveCycle PDF Generator accept network print jobs from a PCL only source?

    More information about this game:
The game should generate a random obstacle course for the player. The first column of the grid, however, should consist of all empty pieces, with the exception of the upper left-hand corner, which is the grid location where the player initially resides.
Enter a loop in which the following things happen (not necessarily in this order):
Print the current board configuration. Additionally, a key should be printed describing what each piece is.
Get an action from the user. The player can move up, down, left, or right. Use the following controls: up = 'i', down = 'm', left = 'j', right = 'k'. The player can move at most one block at a time. Of course, if the player tries to move into a spot occupied by an immovable block, the player will not move.
Inform the player whether they have won, or if they have lost (a player loses if they step on a bomb piece).
If the player types 'q', the game should terminate.
I am still stuck on this maze generator stuff.... Please help me....

  • Aperture 1.5.1 Printing Contacts Problem...not the color issue.

I understand that this product is a work in progress, but a fairly basic feature, Printing contacts of all the images in my project, or printing a selective few, should work as expected.
I do not get the images I have selected at all. Even iPhoto can do that!
If I select three (or any number) images, print them as contacts...fine...the first time only. I then go select another different three images...and guess what it reverts back to the first three images, not the ones I have most recently selected. Select all images...I dont get them all. Whether they have been adjusted or external or anything. That is a fairly useless feature if you ask me. What gives?? The included book is very thin on details.
I called Apple Support and did the folowing: deleted the Aperture preference file at user/library/preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist, and then also rebuilt the Aperture Library upon relaunch by holding the option and something key(?) as per the Support instructions and no difference. Then got disconnected on the phone Support line and ran out of time screwing around with this issue.
Has anybody else run into this? Any Suggestions? I could care less about the color management problems on this forum at this point...all I want is a contact sheet of the images selected. The color quality is a known to Apple bug...so what. How about a basic feature set working?
Thanks for any input or suggestions in advance.

    Same problem here !
I get all selected pictures but some of them are printed totally damaged and just selection of picture. It seems that mostly those cropped ( From 44 just 2). Sending such Contact sheet to Publisher - is not an "best "option describing that pictures are O.K. but problem is software... ??. So I used PS - creation of Contact sheet takes a plenty of time compare to Aperture, but later on printed pictures were more acurat compare to Aperture.
I think something happened in upgrade 1.5.1. Before this worked more-less good. Contact sheet is one of most frequent output of the system when selection is going to be offered to publisher. Have you some tip how to fix a problem ?
    Thank you

  • TS4256 I have got a Canon 5 Mark III, but aperture generates previews instead of of using the embedded previews. What to do?

I have got a Canon 5 Mark III, but aperture generates previews instead of using the embedded previews of my Camera. Who has got an idea? Thanks

The built-in previews are ONLY used initially for speed.
If you have this set, then turn on quick preview and you'll be able view your images when the embedded previews.  But Aperture will not use these previews *forever* - it's only to be faster during import.
You may be misunderstanding what this feature is for and how it's meant to be used.  It's to make import and initial photo editing (picking your best shots) much faster - along the lines of the speed of Photo Mechanic, which it is.
It is not intended to permanently use the camera generated JPEG preview a the preview.  That woudn't really make sense as it doesn't represent how it looks.

  • Page numbers are not generated correctly when print from Word to PDF

Whenever I print my Word document to PDF, my page numbers do not reflect the page numbers shown in Print Preview.
For example, I have a Word document with 10 pages and after generating it as PDF, the page number shows Page 1 of 1; Page 2 of 2; Page 3 of 3; ......Page 10 of 10.
Please advise what may be the cause and how can I rectify this problem?
    Thank you.

    Thank you for your reply.
I do have some sections breaks on the pages, however the pages are all shown in running sequence even on Preview page.
It is the final generated document that has this problem.
I emailed my colleagues my WORD document and ask them to generate to PDF and they have no issues printing the WORD to PDF and every pages were in running order.
    Any other advise?

  • Aperture crashes when adjusting print settings.

    Hello,
    Macbook Pro OSX 10.4.11
    Aperture 1.5.6
    ATI Graphics Card
I've had Aperture crash on me about 6 times today. Each time I am adjusting my print settings. Very frustrating. Within the last 48 hrs. Aperture has lost a handful of images. They were there one minute, the next they were gone. Now it's crashing when I'm adjusting print settings.
Also... probably shouldn't post this here but... My computer shuts down when running on less than 33% battery power. Just shuts itself right down... no warning, nothing.
    Any help... HUGELY appreciated.

Did you ever figure this out? My MBP is doing the same thing. I'm trying to print contact sheets. I can configure the images for the sheet, but the "Printer" box show "No printer selected" and I cannot click on the text to add or type in a printer.
Below it, the "Print Settings" button is active, but clicking on it crashes Aperture within 3 or four seconds.
I think this must be an Aperture problem as I can print from PS and from the various Nikon programs I have.

  • Artifacts when printing .pdf created from publisher

I have some documents in microsoft Publisher 2007, i need them to be converted to pdf to send to people and for them to be able to print them. but when i convert them to pdf i loose a lot of quality all the sharp edges become blockey and fuzzy and then when i go to print one of these documents i get artifacts around the graphics and the back ground on some pictures that should be coming up white comes out a light blue.
i have set the conversion to the highest level quality and this helps the fuzzyness alittle but i still get the artifacts
any one know why this is happening?

This is what happened to me:
We are doing a job for someone that uses Publisher.  They gave us some PDF files saved out of Publisher with a Microsoft addin that lets you publish as PDF and has a preset for a 'commercial press'.  I had a look at the files, checked all elements were CMYK, checked resolution of images, checked that text was black only, printed off a digital proof, and before we printed the job did a high end ripped proof.  All looked fine.
We printed the job and all looked OK, some of the blacks weren't that great though, but still acceptable.
The next day the ink had dried and all areas in images that were supposed to be black were an insipid grey colour, compared to the bits around them that were for example 100C 100M.  What had happened is that Publisher had performed some extreme under-colour removal, so that anything black was 100K only and appeared weak, but the gradients leading up to it were multi colour and so appeared much stronger.  Of course now when we look at a separation proof we can see what was happening, but unless you check that, you just have to 'know' that you can't use that method of printing from Publisher.  Proofs and Press-pass looks fine, but once dry....  It's an expensive experience for us, as we're reprinting the job for no extra, because it hasn't come out like the proofs we supplied.

  • Export img's from aperture for 3rd party printing

I am trying to figure out how to export photos (RAW and jpg) from my Aperture library to be able to submit jpg files to Costco Printer Center, for example.
In iPhoto, you clearly just hit export, and tell it how good of a copy you send to whatever location you choose.
In Aperture, it appears there are more settings.
I am printing proofs and also creating a high resolution disk from the files so they may print to maximum size allowed by the resolution my camera captured.  It seems in Aperture, it is really easy to "fool" a file reader into thinking there is more data in there than there really is by just saying do 350 dpi at whatever size, for example.  Or 800dpi at whatever size.
I want accurate resolution and full resolution.  The last time I exported since I wasn't sure, I just reopened it in iPhoto to export.  But, I am trying to transition to Aperture and really do not want the added step as I know there is a setting that fits my needs, I just don't know for sure what it is as the default says 72dpi for Original size, which sounds off to me.  300dpi sounds more right, but again, I am not sure how I am suppose to have this set.
Your help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
P.S.  iPhoto has some export plug-ins (e.g. Shutterfly), but last I checked, didn't have Costco.  Is Aperture the same way?  This is why I export to a folder in my documents folder and then upload from there as there isn't a way to easily access via Finder the files to upload to Costco.  (PSE9 has an export function to Costco if you bought your PSE at Costco, but if I use that then I am sending the pics to PSE9 to then export to Costco... not really a savings of time there either.)

    One additional question:
I did try to turn the auto correct off on a few pics sent to Costco.  And also sent the few pics again with the auto correct on.  The ones with it off seemed worse.  I remembered after the fact that I needed to do some profiles... and, I don't think I've calibrated my iMac I bought last fall.
So, even if I hadn't committed all these blunders and everything was profiled to a T, would the people receiving the disk be able to send the files on the disk, let's say to Walgreens on auto-correct or whatever they decide to do, and receive the same results I would from Costco?
Or would it be better in the long run to give them generic files that are planned to be auto-corrected by whichever print center and not go through all the hassle of profiling?
I hope my question makes sense.

  • Artifacts in printing eps

I have designed 18 "tee-signs" for our disc golf course. They print fine from Illustrator to various color printers. Now, we are getting them printed on a sticker which we will affix to a metal plate and post near the tees. The printer we are working with requested eps, so I saved a few in illustrator eps format and had him print them to test. They look great except for a few artifacts. For instance, for hole 8, around the "8" in upper left there is a very light shaded rectangle. This doesn't correspond to any shape that is buried in there. It doesn't make sense to me. I could take a picture of that and post if it would help. What it *should* look like is http://mypages.valdosta.edu/dgibson/pbin/dgolf/tsigns/08.jpg (note, this does NOT show the artifact). So, I printed the eps files myself, and I don't get those artifacts, but I do get a few random lines, and also the corners of the stroked fonts look like they are "selected", i.e. tiny circle. Does anyone have any advice?

EPS is a flat file format. This means anything with uses blending modes, some appearance settings, or transparency within Illustrator will be flattened upon saving to EPS.
Without seeing the actual final result, I would guess that flattening occured when you saved the file resulting in the "artifacts" you are seeing. It's always a good idea to utilize the Flattener Preview Panel within Illustrator before saving as an eps or conversely, close the file after saving to eps and then reopen it to see what has taken place regarding flattening.
Files often require special care when saving to EPS to ensure appearance is as desired.

  • Want 2 generate customer statement print directly from F.27

    Hi All,
I want to attach the ZFORM we have created for customer statement to F.27. Currently we generate a spool from F.27 and release it from SP01.
    Please help.
    Thanks

OK sorry, I did not understand your original point.
What you are really saying is you want to automate the printing process for statements.
You need to make sure you select print immediately in F.27.

  • Generating TOC into Printed Document

    Hi!
    Another query from me!
I am outputting my RH10 project to Printed Documentation - Word. I have created a TOC, added books and the content for each level and saved.
When I click Printed Documentation to generate a word document I select the required TOC in the Content pane. In the Advanced Options dialog I've tried gnerating with the Styles in TOC check box selected and deselected.
With all this done and my topics all organised for the layout I Save and Generate my word document. BUT when I get the output I do not have a TOC generated.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this something I should be setting up in my style template in word?
I'm guessing again, it must be user error as the searches I've done for help on this topic seem to have forums where people are importing existing word documents to RH, rather than starting from scratch out of RH!
    Cheers.

When you launch the Printed Documentation single source layout, have you got the TOC section selected in the third part of the wizard (see below)?
