Aperture - gray screen instead of pic?

Not sure what happened but suddenly when I click on a pic instead of enlarging it I get a blank gray screen.  Any ideas?  I tried restarting.

Do your  images in the filmstrip show any of these badges?
We will need more information, to understand what is happening when your screen went grey.
Which view are you using, when the problem occurs? And what is your Aperture Version?

  • MacBook Pro won't download, taken to dark gray screen instead.

When I click on a download link or pdf file link I am taken to a dark gray screen instead of starting the download or viewing the pdf. This just started happening. I haven't made any changes and installations to my Mac. I can right click and choose the "Download Linked File" and it will download fine but it's a pain when I am just trying to view an online PDF.
I'm running MacBook Pro 10.6.2 bought in Jan 09. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I can provide screenshots of the problem. In this example I tried to download flash player from Adobe. http://www.biggfx.com/example1.jpg When I click the "Agree and install now" button I am taken to the dark gray webpage which normally I am not redirected to another page just the automatic download begins. http://www.biggfx.com/example2.jpg As you can see in the address bar this is the .dmg page where the download is suppose to start. Nothing happens. No download to my desktop or my download folder.
Usually I can just right click the link button and save the file to my desktop. In this situation I am unable to because the button also acts as an agreement.
This is the same situation when I click on a .pdf link, instead of seeing the pdf in the window, it's just gray.
I've rebooted, relaunched and tried different browsers. Same problem, although in firefox I get a white page not gray.
    Hope this helps.
    Thank you!

  • MacBook Pro Repeatedly Loads Purple & Teal Stripe, Gray, Light Blue, Bright Blue and Bright Blue Stripe Screens Instead of OS after Optical Drive Replacement by Apple (PICTURES INCLUDED)

17 inch March 26-29 (order date – shipping date) 2011 MacBook Pro, 256GB Solid State Drive, 2.3 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 1 processer, 4 Cores, 256 KB L2 Cache per core, 8 MB L3 Cache, 8 GB Memory (8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB), AMD Radeon HD 6750M Video Card, Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 512 MB total of VRAM. 110 GBs of free/unused disk space remaining.
Full Specs are in subsequent post.
The issues described in the title continue even after I’ve reinstalled the operating system twice (Snow Leopard) and installed Mavericks (which is working fine and even faster). I’ve tried many commands to repair this.
If anyone has experienced any of the symptoms above or below, your advice and response will be much appreciated as well as marked. These are the details:
My Early 2011 MacBook Pro has had the typical blue screens, screen freezes and graphics issues since I bought it about three years ago but nothing like this and NEVER any load issues until about a month ago. That was when my superdrive replacement was put in.
Since then my MacBook Pro will go into hard freezes or kernel panics. Then I’ll have to power it down manually and power it up manually. It’ll then refuse to load the OS until after multiple tries. It started out just 2 or 3, then 4 or 5, then 6-12, then 20. Now it takes over 30 boots to load the OS. These boot issues also occur even if it doesn’t freeze, i.e.: when I shut it down or restart it naturally (via the Apple menu, etc.).
95% of the time it’ll load to a gray screen instead of the OS. 4% of the time it’ll load to a light blue screen. Then there are the others: the first time this happened it loaded to the striped purple and teal screen shown in the picture. This happened the next four times then intermittently for about 5 or so more times.
It also loaded gray flickering screens. Flickering screens also occurred right before it froze and had to be manually powered down and up. Then it began to load regular gray and light blue screens and all flickering screens stopped. And then bright blue screens a couple times intermittently for a few days, sometimes with lines. Sometimes it’ll load to a blank/black screen as well. I’d reset the NVRAM and SMC but it still continued, happening multiple times a day, each time taking more and more hard shut downs and hard power ons to finally load the OS.
Until I installed Mavericks, every time it finally loaded the OS Finder began indexing. After Mavericks this has occurred 95% of the time.
After talking to Apple Support they had me do a NVRAM and SMC reset again over the phone. The MacBook Pro refused to load the entire time we were on the phone. After the call it got worse. It froze over 6 times that day and at worse took over 30 boots to load the OS.
I finally had time to deal with it the next day when it froze again. After over 25 boots it loaded and I put in the Snow Leopard OS dvd and ran Disk Utility. I verified the hard drive and it said it was fine. Repaired the disk anyway and it gave this message at the end:
“Updating boot support partitions for volume required”.
Next I tried to start in safe mode and it just hung up for hours. Then started up in single mode and it loaded the OS. It then loaded normally for three times in a row. I reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything loaded normally. I waited an hour or so and then I downloaded Mavericks. 5 or so hours later Mavericks was installed. Everything hardware wise was fine for a day and all software issues were easily fixable incompatibilities. My Mac was even faster with Mavericks. However, Photoshop did give a perhaps relevant message:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer’s website for the latest software.
GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences.”
(I have OpenGL enabled in Photoshop and it was already checked when this error occurred).
Two days ago I went to Disk Utility to repair permissions while logged in to a non-admin account. Verified and repaired the disk, then verified permissions. Everything fine. After repairing permissions however, it gave a weird error box:
"Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
The box stayed “stuck” in the Disk Utility window. My MacBook Pro then failed to do anything. I manually powered it down and up. It loaded to a gray screen with the error message box again: "Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
It then refused to load anything else but this message box on a gray screen even after rebooting it multiple times in safe, verbose and single modes and after resetting the NVRAM and SMC. I went online with an iPad and entered in the error and got some advice. I tried to run fsck and erase the /var/folders/ via single user mode but it still loaded to a gray screen with the error message. I just decided to skip to the end and Cmd-R loaded into recovery mode and reinstalled Mavericks again. That worked: the message has not appeared since.
Some people have said this error is related to a hard drive cable failure. I know that this cable was tampered with during the optical drive replacement procedures because I watched them do it.
Everything was fine for a day. Then yesterday my MacBook Pro froze while trying to open a VLC file. It took 12 boots to load the OS.  I tried single mode once and verbose mode once. 10 times it loaded to gray screens, even in those mode. A Safe boot lead to a bright blue screen. Finally reset the SMC and it loaded on the 12th time.
Just five hours ago the same thing happened except it took over 30 boots to load the OS. Single, verbose and normal boots, NVRAM and SMC resets lead to gray screens.  Safe boots lead to bright blue screens with and without lines (see pictures). Finally loaded on a normal boot.
I know I should have tried safe booting, verbose, single and recovery modes, disk utility, fsck and other command methods earlier this month but in the end, these methods have not solved the problem anymore than resetting the NVRAM or SMC.
There seems to be conclusive evidence that it’s a hardware problem, stemming from last month, the FIRST AND ONLY time my MacBook Pro was opened up. Maybe it’s the hard drive cable, but it could also be the graphics card and/or logic board (something that’s always been defective on this MacBook Pro, in my opinion). Many early 2011 MacBook Pro owners have given evidence to the latter possibility online.
The first time it started it seemed to stem from me using iPhoto and Photoshop a lot. I had both running continuously for about two weeks. This is another reason for suspecting the graphics card/logic board is at fault (in addition to three years of screen/graphics glitches). And since the card is soldered to the board and the board connected to the cable...I also have serious battery draining issues, something else that got bad after the Apple Superdrive repair. And the battery is connected to the board...
Also, since downloading Mavericks, windows from every app get blurry/fuzzy when I scroll or zoom in. I have read that this is happening to a lot of folks though for various reasons.
I guess it could always be the hard drive. I just don’t know. I’m taking it in to Apple, but can't right away because it’s not local.  I know they’ll be able to run a test on the hard drive. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem (especially the purple and teal striped screen) before they start poking around, possibly creating another problem that goes beyond my Apple Care Plan allotment.

  • 10.7.5 gray screen on startup

I am fairly Mac savvy user. I've tried all reccomended steps to fix the issue, but to no avail:/
Safari was running several windows & tabs when the crash occurred. Now I can safe boot, but it hangs on a blank gray screen instead of launching my desktop.
I updated/reinstalled the OS, nada. I bought a new HDD, used carbon copy cloner, still nothing! Please help, deadlines approaching!

    Hey BrandoB123
The next step would be to reinstall the operating system but booting to the Recovery Disk and reinstalling Lion to resolve the issue. The article below will assist with that process.

  • Gray screen for Bonjour user accounts

Seems that my family can't video chat with my office computer via iChat. All Bonjour users get a gray screen instead of live video, but sound works. On same MacBook Pro, my AIM account can do video. What gives?
    Message was edited by: MrLuxuryYacht

I would love that to work, since I tried it already this morning, but still no go. Even deleting the prefs and even setting my wife's account up with an AIM account (I thought that maybe Bonjour was the problem) didn't work. Still gray. With audio.

  • My computer has been acting weird lately.  Shuts itself off, the mouse goes off in all angles, does not go into sleep mode sometimes and instead shows on a gray screen definitions of words in 3" letters!  Do I have a virus?

My computer has been acting weird lately. Shuts itself off, the mouse goes off in all directions, does not go into sleep mode sometimes, instead shows a gray screen with word definitions in large 3" letters that continuosly flows across the screen.  Do I have a virus?

Doesn't really sound like a virus.
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

How many of these you can answer...
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • When I restart my computer instead of the gray screen that is supposed to appear before the login screen it shows a screen with a lot of letter

I upgrade my ssd for my macbook pro retina from the 256 to 480 GB but when I tunr it on or restarted the computer the gray screen that is suppost to apper dosent show insted a screen with lettler show before the login screen besides that the computer works fine.

I cannot decipher what is written on the images you have posted but they are reminiscent of what I have seen when a MBP is dealing with some totally incompatible software or perhaps in your case hardware.
How and or who installed the larger SSD and what manufacture is it.  I suspect that is the problem.
    Ciao.

  • Gray screen, spinning cog and midway to first back up of time machine

    Hi,
I got a new external hard drive and wanted to back up my system, which I tried using time machine. At some point during the back up, it appeared to me that time machine is stuck. I tried stopping the back up but my machine was not responding, even any other application. I power it down by down the power key. So, I had backed up some data and not all of it.
Now, when I restarted it is showing gray screen with apple logo and spinning cog and not moving beyond that (even after 4 hours). I am kind of worried if my hard disk has crashed and I have lost the remaining data.
Any help regarding trouble shooting this will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    v8r.

Basically, you need to boot from a drive other than the one that is failing. If your external already has an operating system on it, you can boot from that one. Since you're asking, though, I'm going to assume it does not.
First things first: cables. You need a firewire cable to connect your MacBook Pro to your Mac mini. I don't know what FireWire ports are available on your two machines. The two types of FireWire (400/800) are compatible, so if the two machines don't have the same ports, you can get an adapter. See this page for info about types of FireWire ports: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8259.html
    - Next, boot the machine with the failing drive into "Target Disk Mode." When you hear the chime, hold down the "T" key. You should not see the Apple logo. Instead, you should see the FireWire logo slowly moving around the screen. This tells the computer to act as if it were simply an external hard drive.
    - Connect the MacBook Pro to your Mac mini via FireWire. If you're lucky, the drive will show up on the desktop of your Mac mini. Copy the files to a safe location.
    - If it does not, you'll need to use software to recover the data. If you already have DiskWarrior, you can run DiskWarrior from your Mac mini on the MBP's drive. If you don't or if DW failed to produce a read-only "preview," I would recommend ProSoft's Data Rescue: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php DiskWarrior has more long-term use, but Data Rescue is better for this situation.
I know I still skimmed over a few things (e.g. using third-party software that I no longer have), but I hope that gets you started.

  • Two crashes: one OS crash with gray screen and loading bar- help? (Stuck overseas, so you guys are it!)

    Hey everyone.
When firefox crashed last night, I figured it was just firefox being difficult, but when while using firefox my entire computer crashed this afternoon and rebooted with a gray screen, the spinny wait symbol, and a loading bar, I started to get concerned. After looking through console, I'm not sure what's caused it to crash like this so I'm hoping one of you bright people here can tell me what exactly happened. I'm running a mac book pro with 10.6.8, have no real addons on firefox aside from adblock plus, divx, memory restart, a french dictionary, and a skin I've been using forever and have also spoken to the developer in the past about. I'm also using Firefox 17.0.1. After trying to google some of the more unfamiliar/suspicious lines (mostly relating to launch agents), I typed into terminal the command to list all launch agents and received 3 replies naming adobe, divx, and google. I used terminal to delete them all just for safe measure (plus the adobe update window has been irritating me to no end so maybe it'll go away now, haha). I did three things when I tried to boot up again after the crash and the weird launch screen with loading bar came up: 1) I held down the power button again because a) the screen was weirding me out and b) I thought it got hung up again (bar seemed to stall for an unusually long time), 2) I tried to boot again and when the same gray screen came back I just figured I had no choice and had to sit through it. 3) when the bar was at about half way I pulled out my ethernet cord for safe measure in case something shady was going on. These three things are also reflected in the log below.
I currently live overseas and the nearest Apple store is over two hours away with no guarantee of a native english speaker working, so if anyone can let me know what caused the crash and if there's anything I can do about it, I would be extremely grateful. The following is my current console log in its entirety from today, including my attempted system update to see if that would improve things (which also resulted in a gray screen with loading bar later), and a really weird bit at the end that is also confusing (but possibly caused by me tinkering in terminal- not sure).
NAME is replacing my HD name, and my screen name here (caithris) has replaced my computer user name. NUMBER has replaced anything that looks like a serial number of some kind.
Thanks so much ahead of time-- please let me know if there's anything else I can share.

Thanks again- I mean it. It's lousy being stuck away from home when crazy thing happen to your main line of communication!
    -Caithris

The gray screen with loading bar issue is a at boot fsck (file system check) that has discovered something wrong with your boot drive/partition and was attempting to fix it.
OS X is booting but can't complete, so that means your hard drive is good, just likely has been either subjected to shock which damaged data on the platters, or bad sectors (the drive is dying if after fixing it, problems occurs again), or something messed something up in the file structure.
Firefox is currently at 19.02, so it appears your background auto-update has not been occurring, which makes me suspect the machine's data is broken in some manner or you have malware on the machine blocking the updates.
Your problems are multiple, in your case I advise a complete erase and install.
1: If you have a backup of your user data on a external storage drive (not TimeMachine as it might be corrupted and compromised with malware it's just going to restore back) then your good, else you have to do this.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Copy your data to a blank plain jane external storage drive as you want no executable files on it when you connect to the cleaned machine later.
2: Once your data is safely copied (copy visible files manually and what you know is good, not folders that can contain invisible malware programs!) then disconnect the drive(s)
3: Next assume all writeable media is contaminated with malware and treat as so. Even if you erased it.
4: Stick in your 10.6 install disk and reboot holding the c or option key down. You want Disk Utility and you want to select the ENTIRE internal drive and MUST USE the Security Option > Zero All Data (unless your in the military then use 7x erase, do not use 35x as it will take weeks and is unnecessary)
The Zero/7x erase will do two things, do a low level format and erradicate everything (including hidden stuff and deleted files) also will map off any failing sectors on the hard drive.
5: Follow the procedure here to install 10.6
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
6: Reboot the machine twice, then once you set up the machine (using a alias of course and not allowing registration), use a secured network and IMMEDIATLY Software update to 10.6.8, if you can download the 10.6.8 Combo update on another secure machine to a (new) USB thumb drive and install it on the clean Mac, do that instead.
WiFi security issues, at home and WiFi hotspots
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Still run Software update afterwards as Apple might not have fully updated the combo update yet.
7: Once you machine is secure, download the free ClamXav and run a scan on the external storage drive with just your files, perhaps one or more PDF's or other files are not what they seem to be.
8: Make sure to install fresh copies of software from original sources and not from rewriteable media, update them to be current. Malware can be hidden in copies of programs.
9: Trash all your rewritable media, or use a Linux PC or Linux Mint in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) on another computer like Windows to scrub and reformat all the rewritable media before attaching them to the clean Mac. You have to make sure it's getting the entire media.

Really it's best to replace the drive in the interest of security.

  • Can someone help me with my 27" iMac's Gray screen with 5 Pink Vertical Line Problem?

    Hi there,
I'm new to the forums, but I have a serious problem with my nearly 4 year old iMac 27" model.
I was using my iMac one evening and then suddenly everything displayed on the screen gets immediately pushed to the left of the computer screen. Then after a minute, my screen turns a solid gray, displaying no dock, no header bar, no options, and the keyboard and mouse suddenly disconnect.
When I turned back on my computer, it seemed to boot up perfectly normal. The normal gray start-up screen displays:
Then it displays the Apple logo and begins to spin the loading circle icon below it. But this time it adds 5 vertical pink lines down the screen from left to right. They stay in place the entire time:
And then when the login screen finishes loading, instead of bringing up my Account and my Password text box, it displays just a solid gray screen with the same 5 pink vertical lines on it, as shown below:
I've let it set for a half hour and nothing changes. During this time the keyboard and mouse seem to be disconnected, nothing seems to work with the screen or the computer itself. I hold the on/off button on the rear, turning it off and then on again. The same process happens with the boot up, the Apple logo appears, then the spinning loading icon below it, and then the vertical bars appear and the Apple logo and spinning icon disappear.
Is this a problem with the screen that an external monitor hooked up to it might fix, or is it a graphics card problem? I didn't buy the extended warranty package for the computer and it's roughly 3 1/2 years old.
Any idea what might cause this and how it could be fixed in the cheapest way possible?

I have the same problem since yesterday evening.
    My google research found this:
iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support
Maybe this is our problem. My iMac fits into this category.

  • Power mac G4 hangs at startup with gray screen

    Hello all,
I have a Power mac G4 - mirrored drive door model.  512mb of RAM; 833mghz - about 50+ gigabytes of storage remaining.
I recently starting using this mac again, here is what happened:
Power mac G4 was running 10.2.1 - had never been updated; it also was capable of running classic os9 (even though I never used it)
Started using machine again a few weeks ago; let "software update" install 10.2.8 update - everything worked fine
Put computer into target disk mode to transfer files to my new macbook pro (13") - using firewire connection
While trying to connect (migration assistant) - window froze will calculating the amount of space that the "user" on the power mac totalled - power mac appeared to be frozen
Did a hard reset / power down of the power mac G4
Upon restart, power mac G4 goes through all start up functions up to gray screen with apple logo (with spinning wheel) and then goes to a darker gray screen (without the logo) and spinning wheel
Dark gray screen with spinning wheel hangs indefinitely - I've let it stay there for hours on end hoping it will resolve but it doesn't
Here's what I have done so far:
Placed power mac G4 into target disk mode again in conjunction with macbook pro
I can see all the files on the power mac G4 (and have already copied them to the macbook pro) - so I don't think the hard drive is damaged
Disconnected all non-apple peripheral devices - only had a card installed in the back - but took that out - issue persisted (did not replace card in back)
Removed one non-apple RAM stick - issue persisted
Replaced non-apple RAM stick and removed apple RAM stick - issue persisted
    Reset PRAM
    Started computer in single-user mode
used fsck and tried to have system check/fix issue; no matter how many times I re-run the command to repair it never comes back with a message saying no issues found - instead it keeps returning with a message saying that the issue was repaired "system modified"
    Started computer in verbose mode
startup seems to hang when this appears:
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: (ipc/send) invalid destination"
    "LayState: cannot map display interlocks."
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorFailure: CGSNewConnection"
    "Cannot connect to server"
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow: kCGErrorInvalidConnection"
    "Connection called with invalid connection"
    Tried re-installing with system discs
The only discs I received with the power mac G4 when I purchased are orange and say "SSW version 8.6" on it" ("iMac Software Restore" and "iMac Software Install")
Computer does not respond when holding down "C" key at startup with either disc in the drive
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as ONLY the internal HD - not either of the CDs I mentioned above; I wonder if it no longer recognizes the original CDs because I updated to 10.2.8 from 10.2.1 before the issue?
    I also have an install disc for OS X 10.4.7 - for a friend's iMac (G5)
When holding down "C" key at startup with the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When holding down "option" key at startup, the computer shows the bootable choices as the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive AND the internal HD
When I choose the OS X 10.4.7 in the drive I get a kernel panic
When I choose the internal HD the startup hangs at the gray screen I mentioned above
At this point, I don't know what else to do.  I believe the computer is still good because I can see everything on it when I put it into target disk mode; it just refuses to make it through the startup/login process.  I have read discussion threads that suggest re-installing the OS using another computer - but I don't know how to do that.  I also wondered if there was a way to tell the computer to re-install the software using the original CDs - but from the command line (in single-user mode)?
    Someone - PLEASE HELP!

Sorry, SU Single User Mode, OF Open Firmware as these 2 where mentioned before.
As a test, let's try disconnecting the HD & see if it booys to any mode without it attached.
It could be the User's files or login messed up, if you want to try something a little more desperate...
Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...

It'll boot like a newly setup Mac, but all your stuff should still be there once filling out the stuff.
Except you could just use Target mode and move or rename that file.

  • My G5 won't boot up. The Gray screen comes on and it thinks about it until the fan revs up like it is about to explode. A friend said to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. Didin't work. Any suggestions? Isn't there a key stroke to help

Oh, so this is where I ask my question. Sorry, first time here. As I was saying in my long intro, the gray screen come up and the thing is spinning at the bottom, but nothing happens. Then the fan starts reving up like it is about to explode and I have to manually shut it off. A friend told me to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. I couldn't find the thing, so I went out and bought another. Needless to say, it didn't work. Is there a key stroke to help jump start the machine? How can I get into this thing? I would prefer not to take it in because there are a lot of things on there I don't want just anyone to have access to.Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Apple has a number of resources like "Power or Startup Quick Assist"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1149
Your drive does need to be repaired, and best things to buy are another backup recovery drive, with a small OS X partition; a copy of Disk Warrior is expensive @ $90 but excellent and best.
Never bother with or use the drive or reinstall while there are errors. Don't take a "clean' bill from Apple Disk Utility to mean there are no errors. Only that it didn't find what it looked for.

Make sure to have multiple backup sets and of your system so if there is a serious problem, you can just erase and restore to be back runninig.
Sounds like your G5 though needs PMU reset, not PRAM, and the best way for those is to clear nvram instead. might even want to check for dust; tell what System Profile says (later) as to "PowerMacX,Y" or "MacProX,1"
    http://www.apple.com/support/powermac or /macpro
    http://www.apple.com/support/sitemap/
The Utility menu is on the menu bar of an "OS X Install DVD" and at the point where you get to but stop at "install....' for OS X. you probably do need to install OS X on another drive to work from.
Oh, a real severe issue and damage to the drive directory or filesystem CAN in cases prevent booting from DVD (the system still tries to find and see what boot volumes are present) and can help to pull or disconnect the drive. Putting a drive in a FW case to turn on after startup is very useful.

  • Gray screen, apple logo and spinning gear hang at start up

after a lengthy round of "bejeweled", i let my imac fall into screen saver mode. when i tried to log back in, i tapped the mouse and the imac flashed as it does when actuated outside a dialogue without clicking the okay button, and immediately returned to screen saver. i then manually shut down and restarted to the gray screen, apple logo and spinning gear hang. i then inserted the leopard install dvd, manually shut down and restarted pressing the option key and selected the install disc. it booted as usual. i selected the language preferred, used the utility drop down menu and selected DU, then selected the hard drive and verify permissions to reveal a pop up "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Permissions verification complete." i immediately selected repair disc, and breathed a sigh of relief with the notification "appears to be ok". then utilities/start up disc/macintosh hd/restart. still get the hang. i have repeated this process several times, also resetting the PRAM as well to the infinite hang. as a matter of fact, the gear has been spinning the entire time creating this post. needless to say, i am truly at a loss. SOS!!!!!!! Please!!!!! SEND LAWYERS, GUNS AND MONEY!!!!

i have perused some of the threads posted per this topic and decided to attempt an "archive and install." i also have a 620gig acomdata external drive with close to a carbon copy of my internal. a few short minutes into the install, the imac reveals a pop up stating it cannot install some files on the hard drive, contact the software manufacturer or restart and try to install again. the internal drive is a 160gig with only about 60gigs of room, so i tried to archive and install to the acomdata instead as it has 180 gig of free space. i get the exact same dialogue once again. restart and a third attempt only archive and install will not highlight, only first time and/or erase and install. further, start up disc shows only the install disc and network as choices. so i attempt first time install on both drives and get the same pop up message again. DU recognizes both drives although verify/repair permissions does not highlight, but not start up disc.
i'm trying not to become frantic, but my patience is threadbare. i am in desperate need of sound advice as to what i need to do.
    thanks again in advance,
    bradley

  • Slow start up on my macbook pro (gray screen)

when i start my macbook pro i get the gray screen before loading. start up is very slow.

Hello there, I am actually experiencing the same problem. The past few days my MacBookPro's startup has become extremely slow (around 3-4min!!). I have erased the disk (the "most secure" way) and re-installed Mountain Lion, but in vain! Still running slow! Opening Finder or Safari or whatever takes seconds...the multicolour wheel has become a very common sight these days!I did not really understand how people that have previously posted here got help, but here is my timestamp after booting:
