Aperture hangs while importing from iPhone

Hello,
Aperture 3.5.1 hangs on MacOS 10.9.2 after importing pictures from the iPhone.
All pictures are in fact imported, but the process is never finished and the dialog, if I want to delete the imported originals never pops up.
When I unplug the iPhone, I won't get an error alert. I also can't quit the application. It looks like hanging in an endless loop.
any idea how to fix that?
Thanks
matthias

There may be a photo or video on your iPhone, that cannot be imported and needs to be deleted from your iPhone, matthias. Do you remember when this problem started, so you can identify the videos or photos that are causing this? Can Image Capture import without hanging?
Have you installed the most recent iTunes update? It is supposed to fix problems with syncing to devices.
If none of the applications can import from your iPhone, I would try to troubleshoot the phone:

  • Aperture hangs on import from iPhone or camera

Since a few weeks I can't import from my iPhone or digital camera anymore.
If I try to import Photos from my iPhone or camera Aperture hangs forever. The Photos should be imported as referenced ones to a folder on a network share on a Mac OS X Server. This works fine, if the Picture source is i.e. a memory card or a HDD. And it has been working with the iPohne and camera before.
What happens is, that Aperture creates a file like "..importing.IMG0815.JPG" with 0 Bytes in the target folder. And than it hangs.
From this point on there is a permanent network traffic, and reasonable CPU load on both Macs (the kernel_task on the client and the AppleFileServer task on the Server). If I delete the "..importing.IMG0815.JPG" file it is instantly recreated. This continues even if I kill the Aperture application. The only way to stop this is to unmount the Network Volume.
Does anyone has an idea what this may cause?

Aperture, Lightroom etc. are all designed to make use of direct import. They are safer than copying your files via the OS tools for the simple reason they access the cards read-only. If you use OS tools to copy then you are accessing the cards read-write which is far more dangerous if something goes wrong.
Culling your images during import saves time and disk space also. Copying your images directly and then importing is a WASTE OF YOUR TIME.
We disagree. Although such apps are indeed "designed" for direct import, my empirical observations since the earliest days of digital imagery have been that interacting indirectly using an app like Aperture is much, much less stable than directly interacting via Finder when properly done. One can peruse literally hundreds of digital image threads including this one to see overwhelming real-world evidence of what I am talking about.

  • Aperture crashes while importing from Canon Eos 5D

as from today aperture crashes while importing RAW pictures directly from my Canon eos 5D. did not have this problem before. after restarting aperture trys to recover the 4 or 5 imported pictures and then crashes again. As i'm on holyday and not having the original aperture DVD i can not reinstall aperture. Using iphoto is no problem, but importing the same pictures from iphoto into aperture results in crashing. anyone knows about this?

Before 10.5 came out, there were lots of rumors from fairly reliable websites about 10.4.11 imminent releases. In fact, plenty of us were hoping it would come out before 10.5, and with the expanded list of supported RAWs. But it's been over a week since 10.5, and there's no update from any of those rumor sites on 10.4.11. So, who knows...
I can definitely your frustration. But 10.5 is probably a worthwhile upgrade for most Mac users. Unless there's specific reasons (like there's a software you use that's known to be incompatible), you may want to upgrade now.
I am very happy with 10.5, and the the 40D RAW files look good on Aperture. No sRAW support though, which you may already know.

  • HT4858 why am I getting an error message while importing from iPhone photo stream to iMac ?

I have not shared any photo for a few months.  I tried to import photos into my iMac from iPhone photostream and I get a message saying "an error occurred while importing photo, please try again later".  What am I doing wrong ?

There's no need to import photos from your iPhone to your iMac. Photostream is synced automatically via iCloud on Wi-Fi.
On your iPhone, tap Settings > iCloud
Make sure Photo Stream is switched ON.
On your iMac, open System Preferences > iCloud
Make sure Photo Stream is selected.

  • IPhoto Yosemite duplicates Photos while importing from iPhone

    Hi guys,
I have one open issue, with iPhone after Yosemite upgrade: if I connect my iPhone 5s and import pictures, I find a new event but all the imported photos are duplicated.
It's very annoying because I have to remove them manually and I wonder why it happens.
Before Yosemite, everything was working fine.
    Thanks for support.
My iPhone release is 9.6 (build 910.29)
    Kind Regards,
    francesco

    Hi guys,
Unfortunately the answer is "not" to both your suggestions.
    - HDR: yes, I keep original photos as I was keeping it before Yosemite update. So HDR photos were two, the original and the HDR one.
Now even the simple photo (= no HDR, btw the majority in my camera roll...) is duplicated when imported in iPhoto.
    - PhotoStream and a second time via USB: what do you mean?
I have photostream disabled (I don't want photo sync in the cloud).
What I do is very simply and it's exactly the same to what I was doing some weeks ago before Yosemite:
    - shoot photo on iPhone, without or with HDR;
    - plug iPhone to iMac and import photo to iPhone
    - now, with Yosemite, all no-HDR photos are duplicated (if I export them, the file name is IMGxxxxx_2.jpg)
I have just disabled the auto-opening of iPhone while connecting iPhone to iMac (iPhoto was already disabled, I have disabled now even Image Capture).
    Thanks in advance.

  • IPhoto keeps hanging on import from iPhone

I don't really know what information I can give to describe the symptom because it is the most basic operation that I can't get to work. I have an iPhone 4 with 171 photos and videos, some HDR on it. On PC using Windows's built-in photo sync I get everything fine.
But when I connect with iPhoto on my Mac I get maybe 10 photos and then iPhoto hangs up (displays beach ball of death). I've force closed the program maybe 30 times tonight trying to get this to work.
I've tried some of the advice I found in other posts, such as commandoptioniPhoto to check all those rebuild options or option+iPhoto to create a new library. None seem to solve my problem.
This may be coincidence but 2 out of 3 times when it hangs up it was busy synchronizing the first HDR image in my library (HDR photo snapped with iPhone 4, iOS 4.1). There is a low dynamic range counterpart of the same image on the phone and it doesn't seem to hang on that one.

Update: The subject is inaccurate. iPhoto doesn't crash, it hangs.
Second update: Actually I noticed one can edit after a post so it is no longer inaccurate.

  • Random hanging while import?

I'm not sure what's going on but recently, my Aperture library is getting a lot of hanging while importing. It happens both with my camera and even when just importing photos from a local folder. The library is located in a thunderbolt external drive. Usually I have to force quit aperture because once the import hangs there's no way to stop it. Normal quiting of the application will get stuck "cancelling". How do I fix this?

    leonieDF wrote:
. I copied all the files first to the desktop and then imported into aperture, still the same hang at "saving preview...".
The hang at "Saving Preview" typically occurs if one image is being processed, that has a corruption and cannot be processed.
Aperture is processing the previews in the background. That may take a long time. Before you force quit Aperture and suspect a hang, look at the filename in the Activity viewer. If it is hanging at the same filename without getting the preview created, then export the original as original, not the edited version delete that file from Aperture. Check that file in another program and make sure you do not import that particular file again.
Have a look at the screenshot Mr. Spork posted. You can see the name of the currently processed file in the panel. If ithis name does not change for hours, then you have found the file that is making Aperture unresponsive or hang.
Second test, I created a new aperture library immediately after the hang and imported the same folder of files. No hanging.
You cannot be  sure, until the processing of all the previews has finished.
If you isolate the file that causes the hang and check only importing that particular file in a separate library and that works well, then you know that it is the library and not the image.
If it is the library, try rebuilding the library instead of repairing. Make a backup of the library before trying that.
No as I mentioned above. If I force quit Aperture, repair the database, the same files will import just fine. So the problem is not with the files.
Also I cannot rebuild the library, because that will reset all my curves. Any other fix?

  • While importing from my digital camera (Olympus XZ-2), iMovies quits, WHile importgin from my digital camera (Olympus XZ-2), iMovies quits

While importing from my digital camera (Olympus XZ-2), it "unexpectedly quits" - seems to happen on slightly larger clips (over 90 seconds) - not sure if it is related to the model camera or iMovie 11'. Any advice?

Lion is 10.7, Snow Lepoard is 10.6, Leopard is 10.5.
I woul strongly recomend you update to 10.6.8 (the last snow lepoard update) for a number of reasons. First 10.6.8. is a solid OS at this point you won't have to many (or any) gotcha's. Second Leopard (10.5.x) is going away. Pretty sure there will be no more updates for it at this point. If not it won't be long before that happens. Also you will need to have 10.6.8 installed in the event you want to at some point upgrade to Lion.
But finally perhaps the most important point if you don't have 10.6.8 you can't acess the App Store and if you can;t acess the App Store you will need to get the boxed version of Aperture 3. The differerence in price between the boxed version and the App Store version will more then pay for the upgrade to Snow Leopard. In fact you should have  a fair bit of change left over.
    good luck

  • Import from iphone 6 gone in 10.10.3?

There seems to be no option to import from iPhone any more!! This is a blow.
How can I get movies into Aperture (assuming photos import with iCloud)? And projects are now harder to manage.
    Much displeased.

Aperture is no longer supported under OS X 10.10.3.  The new Photos app has replaced Aperture (as well as iPhoto).
So here is how you now import (from Photos' help):

  • Importing from iPhone 4 - ORIENTATION

When I import vertically oriented video from my iphone 4, iMovie re-orients it horizontally. Now everything is sideways. I didn't have this problem when importing from my 3GS. Anyone else dealing with this? Any suggestions? Thanks!

To use a printing metafor, iMovie always works in "landscape" mode. So if you shot the video in "portrait" mode it will be turned 90 degrees.
EDIT: I was notified about this thread since I got the following e-mail:
"You have requested mail to be sent to you when messages to the Apple Discussions *forum "iMovie HD 6"* are posted. BigRed27 posted "Importing from iPhone 4 - ORIENTATION" on Oct 17, 2010 9:44:01 AM."
But this thread is in the "iPhone 4" forum, NOT the "iMovie HD 6" forum. What gives???
Anyway, my statement about iMovie is about iMovie 6 (and earlier).

  • Hang during import from camera or media - HELP!

iPhoto hangs during import from camera or media reader. Works for 20 or more photos, then hangs. No response at all. Must force quit. After restarting the import, it will go further the next time, then hang again. And again. And again. Eventually the import completes. After that, all is OK until next import. VERY FRUSTRATING. Especially with 8GB media cards. ARRGH!
I've tried rebuilding iPhoto library (all options). Using iPhoto 7.1.5 on OS X 10.5.6. 4GB ram, intel dual core.
Help me Obe-Wan. You're my only hope.

I usually use the media reader. After the imports started hanging is when I tried importing direct from the camera to see if it made a difference. No difference.
I've reformatted the media. No difference. Still hangs on first import after reformat. Multiple media cards, all same result. Tried different USB ports, same result. Tried different media readers. Same result.

  • Do some photos get an album tag at import from iPhone?

I use Smart Album to find photos not organized into albums.  But some freshly imported photos don't show up in it.  Do they get an album from the import from iPhone?  It's weird, about half of the photos in any given import will be this way.

The shouldn't.  If you drag a photo or group of photos into the Album section during import a new album will be create for them as well as an event.  But normal importing shouldn't create any albums.  It could be that the smart album is "stuck" and needs a little push. Try editing the smart album, i.e. add another criteria, remove it and then save to see if that will jump start the newly added photos.

  • Iphoto hang while importing photos

Hi, my iphoto in macbook air hang while importing half way.
i cant quit the iphoto now.
pls advise hw can i shut down?

I recovered the pictures in "Today" but they are damaged. You see the pictures in iPhoto but they are very small and there is no information about the picture availabe (shuttertime, diafragma etc).
Those are not your photos, only the thumbnails used for display.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD
