Aperture has just erased 1133 of my images!
It all happened while consolidating a couple of project files in order to back them up. The 1133 files that Aperture has erased were from four recent shoots. The consolidation seemed to go fine but on checking the project thumbnails after everything was complete, all references are missing and the original files have been deleted by Aperture!
This is very bad news for me as it represents a significant amount of recent work lost! Ironic because I was consolidating in order to back up via the vault system! It's now passed 4AM and I can't find a solution. Anybody have any ideas?
Ugly, brutally ugly situation. Aperture "lost" one of my images ..... unsure it's lost any others, but it definitely lost one. That was bad, but 10,000?
I noticed a gap in the sequence, and so I went investigating. Eventually I found that the image was in the Aperture Library (I use Managed) but had been dropped from the index system. The usual rebuild would not link it back in, so I had to remove it from the Aperture Library, and its supporting files, and then re-import it.
For 10k images this might be painful, so the first thin g to try is to do a rebuild of the library. I assume you have.
Next is to right-click on the aperture.aplibrary in finder and "Show Package Contents" Then navigate to a project with missing images and "Show Package Contents" again. Do you see a folder with the image name of an image(s) that is lost? If so, open it and you should see your image.
Hopefully this is the case.
The big issue now is identifying which images are lost, as outside of Aperture development creating some sort of super-widget to relink these into the Library, you'll have to use Finder to move them out and then import them back in normally.
If somebody knows Applescript, and you could provide a list of all the missing file names, recovering the 10,000 is possible. Otherwise I would suggest recovering from you backups.

I want to make a TimeMachine backup in a new hard-drive I just bought. It says it has to erase the info but as the drive is new there's no info in it, so what it is going to be erased?
I had to format it after I bought it so that it could work with windows and Mac and I'm afraid that if I erase the info in the hard-drive, the format will also change. Is that possible to happen? Or the format will stay the same?

Maybe you need another drive. I would never have only one backup and one "live" data set.
you probably installed something, whether it is current or well supported or not, that came with the drive to allow writing to NTFS.
TimeMachine has to use HFS only and use Apple GPT (GUID) format.
sometimes erase changes a drive to GUID when you click on the raw hard drive name in Disk Utility. other times you can erase a volume and leave the partition format type as is. The wording use to be clearer when people knew when and how to initialize, format and setup a drive. And sometimes a message on the screen says it will be only launches Disk Utility and not to the PARTITION tab to make changes.
In addition to TimeMachine, having a clone of your system or data or both can be very useful as well. Drives fail.
And with a MacBook Air you probably have a smallish internal hard drive and might need to store media files and data on another drive to supplement the internal SSD. -
My images will not show in the Finder Pictures folders, but just display as jpeg thumbnails. I have to open each one to see what photo it is. This has just recently started to happen.
I made sure the 'Show Icon Preview' box was checked. This is about all I can do, really, Frank, as i don't know enough about the workings of these machines to start fiddling about.
Strangely the images show as previews in some folders, yet not in others, even though they come from the same sources (my camera and my phone). -
My daughter's ipod touch has been disabled because she forgot her password. It also will not connect to itunes because it's been disabled. How can I just erase or reset the ipod so she can use it? We don't mind if the info. on the ipod is lost.

I havent touched my Iphone 4s in ages (about a month). I came back to it the other day. I forgot the password, so naturally it disabled it and is telling me to connect to iTunes. In the meantime, i had got a new computer and didnt back up the itunes files (because im an idiot). So now when i connect it to iTunes it tells me to verify it on the phone, but i cant get in there because it is disabled. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!! I HAVE NO IDEA ON HOW TO FIX IT!! Aperture applying unwanted adjustments when loading an image

I'm having a bit of an issue with Aperture and I'm wondering if the community can help me.
My camera is a Canon Eos 600D.
I'm running Aperture 3.4.3 on a Mid 2010 iMac 27", with 8GB of Ram.
Just lately, when I import and load images into Aperture, it seems to be applying unwanted adjustments to the photos just after it completes loading them.
Let me explain further:
I take pictures on the camera. Previewing them on the Canon they look as I would expect, and I'm happy with them.
I insert the SD card from the camera into the Mac, and Aperture previews/shows the thumbnails of my photos, and they look just like they did on the camera.
I import them into a given library.
When viewing the thumbnails of the imported images in the library, they look the same, so I double click one to load it fullscreen. The image appears fullscreen, looking exactly as it did on the camera, and Aperture pops the word 'Loading' at the top of the image.
Them when it finishes 'Loading', it seems to apply some unwanted adjustments to the photo. Mostly it applies a yellow wash to the image, and in some cases, it radically adjusts the levels.

And this is what it should have looked like (I had to edit it BACK to what it had looked like on the camera).
I should note that once Aperture has seemingly applied these unwanted adjustments, there is no way to undo them - 'Revert to Original' does nothing as as far as Aperture is concerned, this is the original image.

But when I switch out of Quick Preview, these unwanted adjustments are applied:
Please, can anyone help out with this - it's driving me crazy.
Is there a way of seeing what Aperture might be doing/applying behind the scenes? I've checked Preferences but can't see anything obvious.

Aperture is not doing any adjustments after import. Probably you have set your camera to do adjustments and you are using in-camera adjustment settings, like D-Lighting. These in-camera adjustments are reflected in the camera generated preview, that you are seeing when you are importing the image. After that, when you are opening the image, Aperture will create its own preview from the naked raw image. And that what you will see in the viewer. This preview shows exactly what your raw image is like, without any adjustments done by the camera. If you want the image processing results from the camera and not the original raw image as recorded by the camera from the sensor, import jpeg and not raw.

Thanks in advanceWarunicorn, I'm glad they responded to your report of an issue, but I still feel that they have not changed the program in any significant way since first launching it.
The most important (and I think fairly straightforward) change for me would be to increase the size of the brushes/tools beyond 200 px. If you're working on any medium or large size image at all, that is really very limiting. It's especially true, since tablets and phones can now take fairly large size images.
I may be wrong, but I think Adobe still looks at PS Touch as largely an entertaining toy, to be used by the general public to "fluff up" their photos, not people who are more serious about photography.
With a few simple changes, they could change PS from an average "just OK" program, to one that has some substance, beyond gimics.

Downloading Aperture has slowed down photo editing on my iMac. Should I delete iPhoto?
So it was only the initial preprocessing after an import of a complete library. If your system drive is nearly full, you should expect performance problems. Try to free at least 20% of your drive.
I would try to keep your iPhoto Application - it is only 1.1 GB and you may need it later; but you can safely delete the iPhoto Library once you are sure, you imported it successfully. iPhoto can do some things Aperture cannot - e.g. greeting cards, calendars. And it is always nice to have a second application for testing purposes, if something should go wrong.
But make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library, just in case. Sometimes you will notice years later that a single image not imported correctly, and then you will be glad you still have a backup of the original iPhoto library.

Aperture 3 project does not display any images in one Project
This is a strange situation. The bullets below outline the situation:
The project does not display any images
When I place the pointer over the project it shows there are 500+ images
I have located the RAW images stored in my aperture library
I can pull up the images using a smart folder and searching for photos taken on the event day
This is happening only to one of my projects that I know of (weird!!)
I have tried to 're-add' the image by both importing and dragging and dropping into the project, neither works
I tried the following basics:
Fixed permissions
Rebuilt the database
Tried to re-import the data, but when I have the 'don't import duplicates' these are not an option
Found the images in my Aperture library
I created another project and drug all of the images into that project
Any idea how I can fix this?
My fear is that if I delete the original project, the original master images will be deleted.The most common cause of this is some sort of stuff in the search box at the top of the browser that you don't expect to be there. Just clear it and all your images should show up.

One note - if you drug your images from one project to another it moves them vs copies them unless you hold down the option key. -
My Aperture 3 just crashed...by that I mean it would not open and showed the message: "Aperture 3 cannot open. -1712." I have the latest A3 version and had been using it continually for 3 years. This was the first crash. And it will not open as often as I tried.
I am using a 13" Macbook Pro with OSX 10.8.5.
I tried sending the A3 application to trash, and reinstalling from my A3 disk. Install message said "installation successful." But A3 would still not open and gave same message with -1712.
Any suggestions what I should do or try?
ThanksPerhaps your Aperture library was damaged, when Aperture crashed. What where you doing, right before the crash happened?
- If you installed new software - programs, plug-ins, preferences panels, check, if they are compatible.
- If you imported new images, you may have imported corrupted files, that crash Aperture.
Can Aperture launch correctly, when you try to open a new Aperture library?
Hold down the options-key, when you launch Aperture and select to create a new library. Import a few images. Does that work?
If Aperture will launch on a new Library, try to repair your current library. Hold down the key-combination option-command ⌥⌘ firmly while double-clicking the Aperture library to open in First Aid Mode. Hold the keys down, until the panel appears, and then try the First Aid Options in turn.

Firefox crashes when I try to watch a movie type youtube, has just installed nero and Nikon software on my computer. This began shortly after I installed my new CD burner with Nero 9 burning software, about the same time I also installlerade my new Nikon camera software ViewNX2, I ran Avira scan and Microsoft Egan virus scan and they say everything is good in it, he reported a few times, I ran Avira scan of your computer and Microsoft's own Virus Scanning and they say everything is good in it, he reported a few times, tried again now and the sound is heard all the way but the image is still, therefore gentle freezes, got no number on the bug report so I can not say that. Also ask your pardon for errors in language that may be present but hope you understand anyway!

Please incorporate the Crop & Erase facilities on Bitmap Images in the upcoming version of Illustrator CS7.
At first I was for Illustrator to have a page layout capability and made a feature request to that regard then I obtain Quark and came to the forum and thought well I have that capability and then I realized there were other users that needed Illustrator for layouts and so I backed users like Gary Newman who as i recalled were for multiple pages in Illustrator but I was against making Illustrator a page layout application since it was not designed for it but thought it should have a page making tool but thought it should be one that offer multiple size pages or if you wish multiple size documents within a document.
When they introduce artboards I pointed out that this tooll offered the possibility for a multiple page capability that was more than just pages since you could make pages or if you prefer different size doicuments within one document and then suggest the ability to ba able to name the artboards, like Letterhead, Envelope, Business Card, Mailing Label etc abnd the ability to rearrange them at the moment my most recent suggestion is Master Artboards.
The reason for artboards instead of just a page layout mechanism is one that already exist in ID and two the user of illustrator are artist that Illustrate or work with Illustration or artwork that is often used with ext and photos but are not necessarily page layout designers andmore than likely would employ the use of text to work with a specific Illustration or group of illustrations where the text and art might be integrated as a work into itself as opposed to an element on a page and that might often be the end design of that page. Such as a childrens book!
I was never opposed to the feature of being able to output pages from Illustrator I am opposed to amking it a page layout application and now tith the Cloud which will give Adobe the opportunity to build a modular suite of creation tools it will be even less necessary, the Multiple art feature will develop in my opinion and will include supoport for die cutting as well as packaging tools. Those tools will relate to Illustrator and may eventually give way to a new way to cross application tools.
The Future is coming soon at a Cloud near you, soon is like ten years or so. -

If you are selling or giving away the computer then follow these instructions:
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must
be shut down from inside Windows.
B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right side.
4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be sure
to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See What to do with iCloud before selling your computer.
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
4. Install OS X.
5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
6. Shutdown the computer.
B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
Utilities window appears.
2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.
