Aperture HUD messed up

Since Lion rendered using two displays useless when using full screen mode (you can't use two displays, as you know, since the second display only shows that lovely gray linen pattern), I at least thought I'd continue to make the most of having the HUD on the second display.  But now, when I click on one of the presets, like Quick Fix for example, the little preview window no longer shows up.   Well, I shouldn't say it doesn't show up, it apparently shows up way above where my second monitor ends, so I just can't see it.  I've tried repositioning.  I've tried deleting preferences.  I've tried setting up my displays differently.  But nothing helps.  Oh, the floating HUD is still just fine when it's on my iMac monitor, just not the second display.  So not only can I not use my second monitor for another app, I also can't use it for the HUD either.  Why oh why did I switch to Lion?

I've had the same problem with dual displays, not in full-screen mode, running Snow Leopard, for quite some time.  Since I managed to stabilize the color, I've not tried to fix the off-screen Preset preview problem.
Sorry -- that's all I've got  .

  • Aperture deleting mess

    Hi there everybody,
I am afraid I messed up with my Aperture library after migrating from iPhoto..
I have organized the photos in Albums, and I refer to them when I open Aperture and look for pics or when I import new ones from my camera.
But I know that pictures in Albums don't reflect exactly all the pictures you have imported, because if I delete one photo i dont like from one Albume that photo will stay in the project, and in the disk, taking space. Now, what I need is to be able to delete all the photos that don't appear in Albums, in order to free (a lot of) space. Is there a way?

because if I delete one photo i dont like from one Albume that photo will stay in the project, and in the disk, taking space.
If you want to delete images, the direct way would be to start from the projects and not from the albums. Deleting from a project will always remove the image from all albums using the image. If you are deleting from the albums and want to delete the originals as well, use the command "File > Delete original image and all versions".
Now, what I need is to be able to delete all the photos that don't appear in Albums, in order to free (a lot of) space. Is there a way?
To find all images not contained in albums, I'd open all albums one by one, select all images in the album and flag them (Metadata > Flag - look for the keyboard shortcut assigned to the command in the menu). Then I'd create a smart album (File > New > Smart album) and set the "Flag" rule to "No". This will give you an album containing all images that are not included in albums and you can delete them all at once or send them to the "Rejected" album by pressing the "9" key. But i might be safer to delete them individually, to be sure, not delete anything accidentally that you might regret later.
Also, see Frank Caggiano's User Tip on deleting versions and Masters:
Deleting version also deleted the master

  • Aperture 3 messes histogram when exporting to either PSD or TIFF

    Hi all,
I wanted to ask a question regarding how Aperture 3 handles the PSD/TIFF files. I've noticed that when i export a RAW file to Photoshop or to any other plugin (Noise Ninja for this instance) and Aperture prepares the file (i.e. makes a TIFF/PSD copy of the RAW file) it messes my histogram. As a consequence in a specific case i am working on now, it brightens up the shadows and lowers contrast.
Anyone knows why this happens? Is there any way i can stop this from happening?
    Thanks in advance

P.S: Setting the Black point to the default Aperture value (3) on the TIFF/PSD file generated, results in a very similar result with the RAW file. Could it be the case that during the file conversion, aperture ignores some Exposure settings?

  • Aperture randomly messing up my 'Date' metadata! Why?

I've just come back form Disney World.
Now, for this example let me just explain what's happening with only my Nikon D300 photo's.
I have 476 photo's and set them all to have a timezone of GMT-5 to show the correct time/date.
    Fine.
Now, if I click out of Aperture then back into it, Aperture does some weird update flicker thing and about 5 photo's in my viewing grid now have 6 hours added onto their EXIF Date time!!
    eh?!
Also, if I double-click a photo to view it alone, sometimes Aperture adds 6 hours onto that photo too!
I've spent  the last two days sorting the time zones and dates of my photo's from 3 different camera's, 2 iPhone 4's, an iPhone 5 and an iPad... Around 2000 photo's!!
I've spent around 20 hours sat in front of my computer, sorting out the time zones and date/time of every photo so that they are all in order!
Now Aperture is randomly messing it all up!!!!
    Arggggggg!!!!
    What
    Is
    Going
    On
    ShalI ditch Aperture for Lightroom?
I know Apple have neglected their software for some time now but this is absolutely ridiculous... and preposterous!!
Things have certainly sunk very low indeed when you can't trust a piece of professional software with the most basic of tasks as keeping your essential metadata free from random corruption.
    Pathetic.

We are just users here.  Spare us your frustration, bolded statements, multiple exclamation points, emphatic layout, insults, daft talk, and idle threats.  _We provide useful information for free_.  Respect that.
If you wish to comment to Apple regarding Aperture, you must use the only Apple-approved conduit.  This is available from within Aperture, at "Aperture ▹ Provide Aperture Feedback".
If you specify how you prepared your cameras (or not) for your trip, how you changed them while traveling, what changes you specified during import, what changes you've made since import, and how the results differ from what you expect, I'm sure we can help you trouble-shoot your problem.  Time-zone issues _are_ frustrating to deal with -- but they are also, usually, solvable.

  • Is there a Way to Make the HUD More Transparent

I have been doing a number of Full screen adjustments with the HUD, but I find I am always moving the HUD so that I can see the image section I need to tweek. It would be EXTREMELY nice if I could make the HUD more transparent so that I can see the underlying image better. As the HUD is already partly transparent, I know there must be a preference somewhere to increase the transparency. Since I can not seem to find any mention of this in the manual, and no menu option (that I can find), I assume the only way to make the HUD more transparent, would be edit a plist.
Would anyone know what I need to do to make the HUD more transparent?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi, Ian.
I would hope that application developers would learn from game developers, where HUDs are used ubiquitously.. Very usable and can be even 90% transparent or more.... it is all about contrast. There is a LOT of opaque DARK gray space in the Aperture HUDs, which could easily be much more transparent (even 50% would help). All you would have to do is keep the adjustment controls contrast up. i.e. Apples DVD Player Navigator.
    Anyway.... it would be nice.
Thanks again for keeping me company at this early hour.

  • Aperture 3 Syncing to iPhone/iPad Problem

I'm trying to sync my photos in Aperture (3.0.3) to my iPhone 3GS (iOS 4) and iPad:
I was able to sync projects, albums, faces, and places perfectly fine to my iPhone, but as of about a month ago, when I select Aperture as the source to sync photos in iTunes (9.2), it shows a very outdated version of my library and hasn't changed for over a month. I've tried rebuilding, and repairing the Aperture database, as well as repairing permissions, but nothing has changed in iTunes. I've also tried creating a new Aperture database, putting photos into that and syncing, but some photos don't sync (all standard JPEGs, and they've synced before so the photos aren't the issue). So far no update to iTunes or Aperture has fixed this.
I don't do anything special in Aperture other than import photos from a CF card, directly from my Canon 40D, iPhone, iPad, etc. I did originally import all my photos from iPhoto, but I had no problems syncing or anything like that. I think one of the Aperture updates messed up iTunes ability to recognize the current library as it's stuck on this old version.
    Help is greatly appreciated,
    atshef

I have been syncing from Aperture via iTunes to my iPad since I purchased it. It has had options such as: "Selected projects, albums, and faces and automatically include 'projects from the last 6 months'" and "include videos".
Apart from videos, everything has worked. I got all the albums I selected including the photos, and all the events from the past 6 months (which appear as a separate tab - events - in Photo viewer on the iPad). Video has never worked though, I never see any of the videos transferred - I do suspect the format in that case though, perhaps Aperture sharing doesn't convert the format, even though they work in iMovie.
However, yesterday, as I was syncing, I noticed iTunes say "deleting photos..." now all photos are gone, except one album - the "***" (5 star) one from Aperture. I have tried rebooting the iPad, restarting the Mac, checking other applications can see the thumbnails from Aperture, removing "Sync photos from Aperture" then re-enabling. And nothing. All I get is the one album and no events.
It has been working for months. I have not updated iTunes in the last few days, nothing I can tell has changed, however none of my albums are now being installed. There is zero feedback. It says it works, no errors, nothing.
    Any ideas?

  • Aperture Import Can't See Apple Desktop Folders

For whatever reason, when importing pictures from my Desktop, Aperture can't see any folders on the Desktop.  I can see folders from other places within the Mactintosh HD.
What is likely the reason and what do I need to change to let Aperture see the folder structure of the Desktop?
Running the latest version of Aperture in Mountain Lion.

So is it only the Desktop that Aperture is messing up or does it happen to  all the folders shown in the Import pane?
The next step would be to create a new user, log in as that user and try Aperture from that account on a new library. This will help narrow down the problem. If it occurs in the new user account also then you have a system wide problem and reinstalling Aperture would be my next recommendation.
If it doesn't happen in the news user account then the problem is in your user environment.
One thing to try before all that would be to create a new empty library and run Aperture on that. I doubt the problem is library related but this would at least confirm that.

  • Aperture 1.5 goes non-responsive when quitting

Hi guys, I can't find this previously reported, so I'm going to hope someone has some help for this. I just upgraded from Aperture 1.1.2 to 1.5 without any problems, or so it seems. Since I'm on an MBP with 100gb of space, I maintain two libraries: one "working" library on the internal, and one "in case" library on an external USB 2.0 HD where I store everything once I'm through working with it.
I've turned off all my preview processing as I have no need for that. When I have Aperture pointed to the working library, on the internal HD, I can quit with no problems. However, when I am pointed toward the external drive library, when I quit Aperture... Aperture doesn't seem to want to quit. Looking at Activity Monitor, Aperture has gone into "Not Responding," even though it's still using quite a bit of processor / RAM resources. When I feel the external HD, I can feel that something is going on b/c the write head is writing.
Anyone have ANY idea what's going on here? My libraries there are upgraded completely; all previews are turned off / deleted. It's quite odd, I think.
    Thanks in advance!

Not sure if the Previews had anything to do with it or not, but it's now shutting down just fine off the USB drive. I kept messing with it, and finally let it "run" for about an hour. It still hadn't finished trying to do whatever it was trying to do, so I force-quit Aperture. Re-opened to the working library on the internal disk, and shut down. Opened Aperture again, pointed it to the external library, and re-opened Aperture. Messed around in that library for a few minutes, and quit. No problems, cleared right out. No idea what was causing it, but it seems to be fine for now. [crosses fingers]

  • Streaks in files when Aperture(1.01) opens image in CS2

If it's not one thing.... ugh
D2X NEF --> Aperture --> HUD adjustments --> open in external editor(CS2) I see streaks in the image now, almost like cloned vertical streaks from other parts of the image...
    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png

Ahh geez, more shadows to chase.
I just spent an hour trying to reproduce the streaks.... nothing.
I did have one adjustment version of the file and two PSD versions of the file in a stack when I was happening..
I was able to recreate the streaks, deleted all of the versions and recreated the versions etc.... the opened the orig in CS2 and poof no streaks....
    sigh
If Steve does not have an update for Aperture I am going back to bridge for six months.

  • Is there a way to make cursors support more than 1-bit alpha transparency?

I made a nice cursor PNG, and then I load it into an ImageIcon, use getImage() to get an Image, then use Toolkit.createCustomCursor to make my cursor, set the cursor, and I get a disappointing ugly mess.
My cursor used a bit of transparency and looked quite nice, but it seems that some class along the way decided to make my translucent pixels opaque.
There isn't a way around this is there? And why do cursor's have to be 32x32 px?? I had to take my 16x16 one and throw it in a larger image......
I suppose I don't really need a custom cursor anyway though..

  • Problem with Archiving

when playing around with my archiving option within Aperture, I messed up and saved the library which is almost 2gigs, twice on my Desktop, and library.
PROBLEM: the file is locked and unable to trash because its encrypted
What To Do? To get one of these useless files on my Macbook
    Thanks
    Drew

Same as you do with any locked file OS X, and there's no encryption involved at all.
Select the item in the Finder.
Hit Command-I to bring an info window.
    Uncheck the 'Locked' tickbox.
    Trash as needed.

  • Use 2 Full Screen Apps in Dual Monitors

I always work with two monitors. How I can use two full-screen apps at time (e.g. Xcode + iCal) ?

Here is a screen shot of my 3 monitor setup under Snow Leopard, and it is my understanding that Lion will make the two side monitors display a linen pattern.
The center monitor (iMac 27") is Aperture in full screen mode, the left one has Mail, the right Safari, both have Aperture HUDs.
I'm thinking that real linen would have been cheaper than faking it with two external monitors.

  • Images not shared with Itunes

It seems that my images stopped sharing with Itunes some months ago and i am not sure if it is broken or a setting is turned off or what?

The integration between itunes and Aperture is messed up. It just doesn't work correctly. here's a test I did after having odd things happening with iTunes:
    - Selecting *Favorites Only* in Aperture then quitting (allowing for the sharing preview function to complete) and restarting iTunes resulted in all albums disappearing - leaving only the top level categories (empty since they're not albums). Only way to get things back was to restart Aperture, select Show All, force one preview generation, quit Aperture and restart iTunes - I mentioned forcing a preview because that's the only way I was able to recover my album list in iTunes... go figure. Note that iTunes instantly deleted all my photos from Apple TV as soon as it lost the album list, but when the list reappeared (after the procedure I described) all my previous album selections were intact and syncing put everything back.
Another major annoyance: adding ANYTHING to Aperture (project, album, light table) will ALWAYS shift the selection in iTunes. It's as if iTunes relies on an album's order number and not its name to identify it. So everytime I import new images ( I work with dated projects) or create a new album, I need to make sure I visit iTunes as soon as I quit Aperture otherwise I end up with random or deleted images on my Apple TV.
These are very annoying issues and quite un-Apple like. And btw, nothing like this happens with iPhoto.
Maybe these tests will shed some light on your problems...

  • I've recently messed up my Mac OS X Lion by deleting Aperture, but I need to get my data out of the computer. And by the way, I've got an important project in Final Cut Pro X. Is there any way I can back it up (including fxs and positions of the clip) ?

    Hello everyone
I've recently messed up my Mac OS X Lion by deleting Aperture, but I need to get my data out of the computer. I've tried to repair it using DU, but it said I needed to backup all my data and reinstall the OS. How do I backup my data to an external drive?
And by the way, I've got an important project in Final Cut Pro X. Is there any way I can back it up (including fxs and positions of the clip) ?
Hope you guys can help me!

You need to back up 2 folders, Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects which by default are located on your Movies Folder. You can always check by clicking on a clip inside Fianl Cut X and selecting Show in Finder in the contextual menu for the selected clip.

  • Aperture messing up images with 30 inch external display.

I have a macbook pro with 128MB video ram and 4GB ram. I just purchased a 30 inch display which I am using externally and have noticed that aperture now regularly locks up and screws up images and the display. Picture here
I have aperture using the full screen and then when I start something like cropping, as I move the box around it starts to mess up the picture as per the attached image. If I then go to other pictures and come back to it, it will still be in the same state. Fortunately, if I quit the program and restart aperture, the image will be ok.
If I shrink the window back down it would appear to behave normally. I have also restored aperture to before one particularly bad lock up that brought my whole system down.
Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?

I have not experienced this exact issue but I have had issues with graphics cards/drivers and the 30" displays in the past. The cure has always been an apple update for the cases that I have experienced. That being said 128 M is a relatively small amount of VRAM for Aperture + 30" Cinema. I would expect performance issues for sure and it maybe contributing to what you are seeing.
